She mad

To discover why Dynamique is extremely unhappy, visit the Alt★Hero Freestarter page and scroll down to read the fourth page of her encounter with Captain Europa and the Global Justice Initiative.

We're now less than three thousand away from reaching Stretch Goal 3, which triggers the production of Volume VI. This means that all three initial stories will be receiving a sequel. It also means that everyone who is signed up at the Digital Edition level will be receiving 288 pages of novel graphic entertainment for $15. That's an exceptional bargain, even if you're not particularly interested in comics.

We also have some very exciting news to report, which is that a longtime veteran of Marvel and DC Comics has joined the team and will be working with the existing artists to help improve our art and production game.

I already have an example of one such collaboration, and I have to say, it is impressive. We'll won't be showing it off for a few days, for reasons that will then become clear, but I am quite confident that you will be as pleased with the results as I am.

Thanks again for all of your strong support!

"...one of the plethora of evils..." etc.
Man-o-man, you are sure making Captain Europa into a punchable face! Maybe the art can be improved, but the dialogue is already standing out from the current crowd!

"Golden handcuffs" was the tell weeks back. Heh.

Capitaine Europa, he plays with the fire, messing around with Gauloises like that.

Anonymous Jeff October 01, 2017 8:19 PM

I thought the art was already pretty good, but nice to see you guys are always striving to improve.

Anonymous Nathan October 01, 2017 8:20 PM

There's a bit of Laureline to Dynamique's design. Or at least our Alt-Hero girl brings to mind another French redhead comics girl.

Will the sequels come in the trade paperback too or just digital?

Really hoping to see more pictures of the Rebel Yell chick from the new guy.

OK, fine, sure, twist my arms and make me invest in hard-covers. You are now over $57k, though I've noted discrepancies between what I'm seeing and what other people are reporting it being (usually when someone says "it's now over $25k!" and I'm seeing something like $23K and change).

Blogger Wolfman at Large October 01, 2017 8:28 PM

As the sniper glared through his scope he thought, "I could shoot Captain Europa. It wouldn't kill him but it would wipe that smug look off his face for five seconds."

"And that might be worth the trouble I'm about to get myself into."

Blogger Markku October 01, 2017 8:29 PM

The discrepancy is because Freestartr caches the version of the site that unregistered users see. So, when you open the project page, you may see a version of it that is several hours old. You have to register as a user, and be logged in, in order to always see the real current amount.

They will be purchasable in a second trade paperback. Unlike the digital editions, we can't afford to just give away the additional pages in print, because 144 more pages of paper significantly increases our costs.

Helluva deal...the way I see it when the $60k stretch goal is achieved most of the 400 or so backers that are already backing the first paperback and hardcover copies will probably spring for the second paperback/hardcover.

That would be nice. We have to sort out the price, but the paperback will probably be set at $25-30 so that we can cover the shipping. More for the hardcover, but not $75.

Blogger Markku October 01, 2017 8:47 PM

Yep, normally the page count is not the biggest factor to the price of a book (the covers and binding process are), but this goes on the best quality paper the press has, with the best printers the press has. In this case, each page has a real price tag.

Blogger Dave October 01, 2017 8:49 PM

A comment from the Freestartr page: "Can anyone tell me if the pledge amounts include shipping costs, or are those added in at the end of the process? So, for example, would a $30.00 pledge made for the paperback ultimately mean I was charged for $35.00 or $40.00?"

These are all-inclusive deals, correct? Unless they're in Antarctica or something.

Blogger VD October 01, 2017 8:50 PM

Yeah, we'll cover the shipping.

Excellent news about pros. They know the tricks good fan art misses. I guess I'll have to pull the trigger on getting the digital at least.

Are you starting to think about how many books you can support at once? The more the better as long as quality stays good.

Any plans for superhero stories I can share with my grandkids?

Blogger The Observer October 01, 2017 8:56 PM

Kind of curious. I know the Dark Lord is probably busy with SJWADD and Voxiversity stuff at the moment, but when should backers receive word back with regards to their appropriate backer tier rewards?

At the same time, I don't seem to have been charged for my contribution yet, last time I checked (about a day or two ago). When does Freestartr actually get to funneling the money?

Sometime after October 9th. I'm not doing anything else now except getting the book done and the usual blog posts.

Blogger F.D. Stephens October 01, 2017 9:35 PM

Nearly 60k? That can't be right.

Over at Kickstarter, Fem Fatales: A collection of comics & art has raised £435 of a £3,000 goal. And I'm reliably informed that a comic featuring "gender-flipped heroes and villains from comics, games, books, toys, television, film and more" is what sells today.

Blogger Silly but True October 01, 2017 9:37 PM

I just backed. 1. Backing this is much less than I would have been spending on Captain America and Thor the past 2 years as well as Secret Empire. This was easily justified as my Nick Spencer purchase.

Good to see it successful, and I'm glad to hear there's some high powered creators coming aboard.

Anonymous Looking Glass October 01, 2017 9:49 PM

Vox retweeted some of his work, but it really should have dawned on me that Doug TenNapel was someone to eventually do some work with. Even if just an alt-cover or something. Though it'd be fun to get some new work from him, though he's busy with other projects.

Blogger Markku October 01, 2017 9:51 PM

No, our prior involvement with Doug is not comics-related. It just made sense to ask for his opinion on the project.

Strong support? I wish. I'm in for the lowest tier that gets me the digital editions. I'd love to be in for the hardbacks. But paying the bills and retirement savings come first. :(

Anonymous Planter October 01, 2017 9:59 PM

Looking forward to purchasing the next volumes as well. Would like an option to combine paperback and hardcover together. Have a feeling the hardbacks will look great on the shelves.

If you tell it to donate a second time, does it edit your existing pledge or create a double pledge? I see a name twice in the top pledges.

@24 Markku

I didn't know Castalia was working with Doug, but that's great to hear regardless!

For those that don't know Doug's work and the still awesome Earthworm Jim, you should look it up. Also, he's about the last open Christian in the field. Great to hear he's working with Castalia on a project, though! New Graphic Novel?

They literally madr green arrow say "im a social justice warrior". I have al2ays wanted a good comic to read, and noting how vox is writing these i am more than sure that alt hero will be exactly what im hoping to have in a comic. Thank you castalia, I will read this, my woman will read this, and my future son/daughter will.

This might actually be a thing.

Here in Boulder we have a comic store that was run by a Tancredo guy from 2010. I assume he's no SJW. I'd love to buy this comic through that store. Will that be possible? Sorry if this is a FAQ but, maybe that answer can go on the FAQ.

Blogger Markku October 01, 2017 11:39 PM

Yes, the store just has to create a re-seller account at Ingram, if they don't already have one. It will be in the Ingram Catalog.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask this question, and if anyone has an answer that would be great. I've backed the Startr campaign at 150 and would like to know if it is possible to 'upgrade' the paperback to a hardcover or if this is only possible via the 75 backing. Thanks and best of luck with the series. I'm looking forward to reading it.

Ok, Vox would prefer to do this cleanly by waiting for Freestartr to implement the proper feature for this, but of course things don't always meet deadlines in software engineering. So, assuming Freestartr allows the same user to back the same project twice on two different levels (will have to make sure), what we can do is to add a figurine-only (plus digital editions but nothing else) tier at 115 USD. Then those who want Figurine + hardcover could do a workaround, and support once with 115 USD and once with 75 USD. Then, when the real feature arrives, we'll clean the unnecessary tiers up.

Anonymous D Rex October 02, 2017 7:00 AM

I'm a rebel level backer and would also like to add the hardcover version. And the volume II hardcover. I get the feeling there is a few of us out there. I'm hoping that these additional pledges help to push the project all the way to 100k

Are these books actually going to be mass produced and sold in stores in the US (i.e., distributed through Diamond), or will fulfillment be through a print-on-demand service?

The pledge drive's original ask suggests the latter.

Through Castalia House's existing distribution, which is global, and includes, but is not limited, to print-on-demand.

The pledge drive's original ask suggests the latter.

We have never contemplated distributing through Diamond or even printing conventional comic books.

Sure, but Alt-Hero will be a graphic novel, yes? Those are sold in comic shops as well.

The pledge drive's suggestion is that these books will go toe-to-toe with Marvel/DC, but I suppose what you are saying is that they will not be sold in comic shops or book stores.

Blogger VD October 02, 2017 8:53 PM

Yes. I expect most comic shops, like most bookstores, have accounts with Ingram.

You really need to stop supposing and assuming. I am saying, and I have said, we will distribute these books just like we distribute all of our other print editions, which we sell thousands of every month.

Anonymous Vox Diabolus October 02, 2017 9:44 PM

"You really need to stop supposing and assuming. I am saying, and I have said, we will distribute these books just like we distribute all of our other print editions, which we sell thousands of every month."

With respect, comic shops do not generally purchase through print on demand services. And using Ingram’s own tools, I have calculated that a single 192 page color paperback (volumes 1-4 of Alt-Hero, 48 pages x 4) with shipping included, will cost a comic shop $15.15 to acquire. Comic shop retailers receive a 50% discount through Diamond and will certainly expect that from you, so your retail price would have to exceed $30.00 for you to make even a penny of profit. The typical market for a book of this type is $20.00 or less.

This is assuming, of course, that you will have an advertising campaign prepared to entice shops to order the book, which I suspect you will not. That would cost you more than if you went with an offset run and sold through Diamond.

Blogger VD October 02, 2017 10:09 PM

With respect, comic shops do not generally purchase through print on demand services.

Again, comic shops and Diamond have never been a part of our strategy. Comic shops are going out of business left and right, so we see no need to pay any attention to them at all. Digital distribution inside games is the core of our strategy; both print and audio are secondary to us.
