Startup basics

I finally got the White Bull himself to launch a Periscope. It went pretty well for his first time, and he's putting together a plan to cover a lot of the basics that the average entrepreneur simply doesn't know. You can watch the first one here.

One thing that is definitely going to be needed is a glossary. It was kind of funny when he suddenly realized that most people simply aren't familiar with a fair number of words that one tends to take for granted in that world.

JudeoChrist, if you're reading this please upload these to the webz for posterity or teach somebody else how to do it.

Excellent. The periscopes look like they'll be valuable. I'm tuning in.

I would like to bootstrap/ self fund but I only recently got life arranged where I can look at starting a business. Still in the exploratory phase now. So funding method will be dictated by the business and vice versa.

Nicely done! Great information. Looking forward to more of those.

This was really cool. Thanks Vox.

1. He has a great voice - really smooth and relaxing.
2. Look into the camera lens at times to create 'connection' with audience.
3. His knowledge is obviously top-drawer - may as well wear a T-Shirt that says 'MENTOR' in capital letters.
4. The back and forth between you two has tons of potential for an ongoing video series.

Good content. Thanks.

If there were ever two people mean to write instead of talk, it's the two guys on this Periscope.

Blogger Matt October 18, 2017 11:05 PM

Am I the only one who read that as "White Buffalo"?

Blogger Mountain Man October 18, 2017 11:07 PM

Dr D if there ever was a commenter more in need of remedial spelling it would be you.

Blogger Mountain Man October 18, 2017 11:10 PM

Great Periscope..looking forward to more. A lifelong serial entrepreneur who has had to learn most of it the hard way, any information from others who have been successful is most appreciated.

Anonymous DougK October 18, 2017 11:19 PM

Agreed - lots of potential with this subject. Getting a bit long in the tooth myself, but I still may have some use for what can be learned here.

Per Ignaz at @5: yes, a nice pleasant voice to listen to. Not necessarily exciting, but people will be tuning in here for education, not entertainment. Agree about looking more into the camera (which will take practice). And of course, Farley will be more centred in the view field once he is doing these by himself.

Forget about Dr D - the presentation will improve with comfort level, and that won't take long.

One minor suggestion I will offer - keep the hands back away from the camera. (Unless holding up a chart or something, obviously.) Placing the hands on the desk right in front of the lens makes them seem disproportionately huge (not unlike a certain female Marvel character featured recently at VP), and that can be a distraction.

But looks good overall. I'll be tuning in.

Blogger Mountain Man October 18, 2017 11:27 PM

@2
If you are interested in bootstrapping/self funding, you will need to first create a business with scale of some sort. It will be the only way to generate, in a timely manner , returns high enough to self finance. Ideally, however create as many businesses where you use the money of others throughout the entire process. Brokering distressed/undervalued assets is just one example.

Blogger Nate October 18, 2017 11:30 PM

dude. this is gold.

Blogger Nate October 18, 2017 11:30 PM

"Am I the only one who read that as "White Buffalo"?"

nope.

Blogger beerme October 18, 2017 11:56 PM

Great Content. I can't evade the feeling that Periscope works better for hot takes on current events than as a teaching medium.

It's a case where I feel I would need to read a book by him on the subject because "I don't know what I don't know" and any questions would be on very dumb concepts that he may not even think need explanation.

Blogger Bibliotheca Servare October 19, 2017 12:22 AM

That was freaking awesome. I figured I'd try pasting the link into chrome, and I'm so glad it worked! Farley is pretty darn cool; I think he's either a natural teacher, or just really, really experienced at relaying information to people who are starting from essentially zero knowledge of the subject in question. Or both, I suppose. Either way, as Nate said, that was pure gold. Thanks, to both of you! :-)

Oh, will the next periscope on this subject be linked here, like this one?

Awesome and timely.

I have a company interested in a document content extraction SDK that I'm developing (95% finished)
and I struggle with the business side (i.e., how much percentage of company and for how much).

How much $ does it take to create and maintain a blog/comments independent of a hosting service?

Anonymous Difster October 19, 2017 6:11 AM

That was great stuff. I subscribed so I'll get notifications of future Periscopes.

Stilicho wrote:How much $ does it take to create and maintain a blog/comments independent of a hosting service?

About $5-15 a month for a VPS (depends on what company you use and how much traffic you have, it can get more expensive with heavy traffic / lots of media transfer). And the cash to pay someone to set it up for you if you don't know how; say $1000 as a reasonable top end for that if you're not asking for something particularly complicated or customized. Some people are much cheaper.

Blogger roughcoat October 19, 2017 6:31 AM

Note: I'm talking about setting up a wordpress site on a freshly spun up VPS (which means a bunch of crap needs to be installed and configured in Linux). Wordpress has comments built-in, and I'm sure there are good paid plugins for fancier comments if you want them, though I haven't looked in awhile.

If you wanted something else, it would cost more. Potentially well into five figures if you wanted a lot of bespoke work done.

Blogger Daniel Paul Grech Pereira October 19, 2017 7:27 AM

Thanks for convincing Farley to do these. I'm a web developer, and I will thoroughly enjoy this content. Also amusing to see VD gulping wine in the background.

Blogger Student in Blue October 19, 2017 8:19 AM

Listening to the initial comments about venture capitalists and ownership reminds me of How to Get Rich by Felix Dennis. That's definitely one of the things he hammers in there.

The other being, if it floats, flies or fornicates, rent it. Don't buy it.

Anonymous Avalanche October 19, 2017 8:23 AM

@17 "Inaudible"

Consider: if (nearly) EVERYONE ELSE is not having a problem... the problem is in YOUR set up, right?

Get some headphones or ear buds; if you're on a tablet or phone, download a "volume increaser" app. If you're on a desktop(as i am) use your computer's volume control to raise the headphones to 100% and then control from the headphones.

Blogger Student in Blue October 19, 2017 8:30 AM

Does White Bull have a planned time for when he does his periscopes?

Anonymous Avalanche October 19, 2017 8:33 AM

I enjoyed Farley's Peri, although I'm not in a position (nor likely to be) of needing venture capital. I AM an entrepreneur (to use the jargon): I inherited a 50+-yr-old manufacturing co, so I've been climbing a steep learning curve these past 6 years. Looking forward to more!

Please tell Farley to visualize someone "on the other side of the camera" to whom he is talking. Makes it easier to talk "through the camera" to the person (thus, to the people watching)... I know he's really experienced at talking to live groups where he can see the feedback with his eyeballs. In this sort of 'talking' - he has to 'feel' the feedback.

For both of you (I know it's vacation, so 'not a plan'), having the laptop "below nose level" means we're kinda getting a 'view' up into y'all's brains... Less than flattering.

I will write, Vox, that you now seem quite comfortable doing these Peri's sitting. Gives you more flexibility back home -- standing in the library or sitting on your throne of skul... er... your intricate and lovely desk chair. (And hey! You could try sitting on a couch WITH A DOG ON YOUR LAP!!! Just a suggestion! {wink})

Anonymous Avalanche October 19, 2017 8:35 AM

Oh! And make sure Farley arranges Peri replays -- I have enough trouble making your Peri's "on time" (no notifications on a desktop) -- I can't do both!

And, as someone above wrote: post 'em to YouTube; make a channel.

Anonymous Korbin Ransley October 19, 2017 9:50 AM

Enjoyed the scope. Thank you both.

Blogger wreckage October 19, 2017 11:02 AM

Top shelf. A very different business world to the one I am accustomed to; ideal for perspective. Farley is clearly a pro speaker, unhurried, on-topic, no rambling, no tics. Makes it look effortless.

will bring up a list of Periscopes from this person.

I'm not sure if Periscope's default is to retain but I can find most people's broadcasts post facto including SDL.

You may have had difficulties finding this after the broadcast because Periscope's search function is not fit for purpose.

Blogger 罗臻 October 19, 2017 1:13 PM

There's a free course offered periodically here: https://kfatechstars.novoed.com/kfa-venture-deals-fall17

It's designed for entrepreneurs to understand how VCs work. I'm taking it to learn more about VC/early stage investing and finding it very informative. Everything he's talking about in Periscope is explained. They have a book covering the topic as well called Venture Deals.

Anonymous Taurean October 21, 2017 1:50 PM

Thanks for all of the comments regarding the first White Bull Periscope; duly noted! I am watching Scott Adams, Vox and Cernovich, so I am sure i'll get the hang of it soon enough...

I will be doing a solo Periscope tonight (Saturday), after Vox, so probably a bit after 6pm EST. Tonight, I think I will go through some of the vocabulary, as Vox mentioned that might be a good place to start. I do find that we are sometimes in our own "echo chamber" in the tech/investment world.

Next week, I am traveling to Silicon Valley for a conference; so will recharge my batteries at the altar and see what's trending. But if I get one comment about "checking my white privilege" I might lose it! Seems to be the SV insult of choice recently...
