200K!

Thank you all. I can now confirm that the campaign is officially over $200k. We already have a very strong cosplay candidate in mind and I'm informed she is definitely interested. Also, Freestartr has added the last two draft pages we intend to post for the campaign, so you'll want to check them out.

For those who are curious, the other members of the Global Justice Initiative who appear in the scene there are Shade, Agualonia, Dr. Nano, and Redshift.

UPDATE: Well, I thought that 0 days left meant the campaign was over. I should probably ask Freestartr what's up.

UPDATE: Apparently we all misunderstood the developer's timer plug-in. 0 days left does not mean the campaign is over, it means there are less than 24 hours left. So if you're feeling like you missed out, it seems you've been granted a reprieve. Freestartr has confirmed that the official campaign end is 8 PM Eastern on October 30.

In the meantime, here is a new image of Ryu no Seishin. You won't like her when she's in Dragon Mode.

Trump said we would get tired of winning. He was wrong. I love winning!!!!!! Alt-Hero is a winner!

It is my hope that Alt-Hero becomes a franchise like Marvel and DC! I know that I might be going too far with this but I wanna dream big!!!!! I already called my comic shop to ask if they were going to carry Alt-Hero.

Space bunny cosplay is nice and all, but when do we get the Dark Lord Cosplay? You could alternate the two on the walls of the kennels, so we can look upon you at all times or whatever. It's not weird!

Looks like the Freestartr folks are doing data clean up. Lots of little bounces up and down in the total.

You might want to check your "Contribution History" and verify you have what you asked for in the campaign during the final hours.

Grab a screenshot if you are paranoid, but things were very stable in my account during the campaign. Freestartr gets 4.5/5 stars from me.

Blogger Markku October 28, 2017 2:59 PM

The Star Citizen analogue doesn't really apply. The problem with SC is that every added "module", as the stretch goals were passed, simply expanded the scope of the game. They spoke about modules, but it's all bullshit. Software engineering doesn't work that way. Features are extremely seldom modular.

So, there was really just one product, that became bigger and bigger, until the scope reached comical proportions. And to achieve ANYTHING, you have to achieve EVERYTHING in the project. You can't have a functional game by making just, say, 25% of it. It's all or nothing.

Whereas we are simply adding more individual products. Products which are mostly made by people other than what was required for the 25k goal. Very little of the other stuff adds workload to Vox, me, or anybody involved in creating what's required for the base project. And even if it does, the work serializes. If Vox has to write something for a volume very late in the series, he doesn't even have to think about it while writing the early ones. You just go about it in sequence, always having a manageable task in your hands at any given moment.

In the meanwhile, independent projects like the website, wiki and RPG, are proceeding on their own, managed by different people. So, the bloat effect is not a danger to us, like it was to Star Citizen.

Blogger Retrenched October 28, 2017 3:01 PM

This story is happy end.

1 century before its projected release, Chris Roberts adds 10 modules to Star Citizen. The same happens at 1/2 a century before release, then at 1/4 a century before release, and so on. At each addition, the Star Citizen team finishes 1 module at random.

What is the probability that at release date all modules are completed?

Blogger Forge the Sky October 28, 2017 4:14 PM

Does the $75 hardcover level not include digital editions of vols IV+?

That seems to be what the text says. I'm only asking because the $30 paperback level says it includes digital editions of everything, which seems odd given the price difference.

Anonymous FnordAndSorcery October 28, 2017 4:51 PM

I hadn't paid very much attention to the Alt Hero crowdfunding until the RPG was mentioned. It immediately caught my attention. I've been on a kick this year with wanting to see how different RPGs do things and compare them. So many systems have some kind of OGL now it's not necessary to write a new basic system from scratch (unless you have a vision of some fresh game mechanics).

I'm glad to see this project doing so well. I just went in on the game and the Paperback #1 option.

Blogger Emmanuel Mateo-Morales October 28, 2017 5:07 PM

@21

Speaking of games, how would you make a game extremely moddable except through releasing the editor used to make it ala Bethesda (even though they've become REAL big assholes about it)?

Blogger Markku October 28, 2017 5:12 PM

The more of the logic you write with a scripting language like Python or Lua, the more it can be modded. But the less efficient the code is in terms of speed and memory use. So, that's the tradeoff. You just have to decide right at the beginning, what level of moddability you're going to aim for.

Blogger Cubby8126 October 28, 2017 5:50 PM

FINALLY MADE IT TO THE PARTY!!!

Anonymous Eli October 28, 2017 5:52 PM

I really like how you dropped the total needed for Chuck Dixon's Avalon volumes 4-6 from $200,000 to $185,000. All for it not to matter in the end anyways. That's some incredible fundraising in the last two days. Well done to Vox and team. I can't wait to get my hands on the finished product.

Blogger James Dixon October 28, 2017 5:53 PM

> They spoke about modules, but it's all bullshit. Software engineering doesn't work that way. Features are extremely seldom modular.

They can be (at least in theory), but it requires a huge upfront cost in system design. You have to have your basic overall framework. You have to determine what will be in the main structure and what will be implemented as a module. And you have to design a module interface system (I.e., you have to define what you want modules to be able to do and how to pass the required information to and from the modules).

None of this is easy and most programmers simply aren't up the task. Look how long it took the Linux kernel to get loadable modules.

Over $212K!

Anonymous Man of the Atom October 28, 2017 6:20 PM

If you look closely at the graph, you can see the point density get intense the last 4-6 days compared to earlier portions of the campaign. This is a reflection of a backer making or modifying a pledge.

Today and yesterday that was a rate of about 1 pledge every 6 minutes.

Outstanding!

Blogger Ostar October 28, 2017 6:51 PM

Upped my contribution. FreeStartr made it quick and painless.

Blogger maniacprovost October 28, 2017 6:57 PM

The more of the logic you write with a scripting language like Python or Lua, the more it can be modded.

Intersecting the tangents from the two topics here:

XCOM 2 from the XCOM reboot series is supposed to be highly moddable. It's a great game, which revolves around sending a team of diverse units on missions. This was also true in the 2012 XCOM, although it was weird story-wise that a global defense organization could only deal with one mission at a time.

It would have made more sense as something like Marvel's Avengers... or Alt*Hero.

Best case, we're probably 3-4 years away from serious development of an Alt*Hero game. I'm biased towards Turn Based Strategy and RPGs but some combination of the two would seem to best fit the story, budget, resources, audience etc.

So when the site comes out we should create a forum topic to discuss the hypothetical Alt*Hero game.

The other option would be something like Fallout Shelter. Microtransactional clicking simulator!

Suggestions on how to fix it?

Blogger SacrificialLamb October 28, 2017 11:33 PM

Hi, Vox. I just donated, but I do hope that I donated in time. I tried to make an order earlier today (when it said "one day left"), but my response e-mail for account creation from FreeStartr didn't seem to show up....and I was pressed for time, so I didn't realize that the confirmation e-mail for my FreeStartr account was sent to my spam folder.

So....yeah, I just donated over fifteen minutes ago, and received an e-mail from Freestartr at 11:12 pm (Eastern time), indicating that I backed the campaign. It said zero days left, but I do have a confirmation number, so I'm probably ok.

At this point, I'm so completely disgusted with SJW Marvel, and even with some of the other SJW nonsense inserted into DC TV shows and comic books....that I just want to see something different. I hope everything works out.

Good luck, man.
