The death cult in comics

The estimable John C. Wright explains why Marvel and DC Comics are pursuing their present course:
What is happening is that the leaders at SJW Marvel would prefer to put Politically Correct nonsense and crap into bookstores for sale than real stories penned by good writers about heroic topics.

They do not know why. To them it looks like financial suicide.

I submit to your candid judgment that if you look at a man's financial motives, you are not seeing the whole man. Man seeks money to buy bread, but man does not live by bread alone. No culture in the history of the world ever existed without rites and rituals and sacrifice to hidden powers greater than human life. For the communist East, that power was the material dialectic of history, a sort of science flavored goddess, who demanded the bloody sacrifice of world wars, gulags, mass starvation, and endless executions. In the democratic West, the greater power was God, and, to a lesser degree, the ideals of freedom. God demands righteousness; democracy demands civic virtue and the self sacrifice of soldiers and sailors.

Now, no honest Christian would burn a pinch of incense to Caesar, and call him a god, for any amount of money. Not even the threat of death stirs the heart of the martyr.

SJW Marvel look at themselves as martyrs.

They think their goddess, history, will reward them with victory over their enemies, the conservatives, who are the sole source of all greed and evil in the world. All they need do is burn, degrade, and insult the beloved heroes of comics, and turn them all into minorities. The loss of review means nothing to them. They do not want our money.

They want the reward of righteousness without being righteous. They want to be martyrs without paying the cost in blood. Political correctness allows them to do this. All they need do it take an industry and ruin it in the name of PC.

The destruction is deliberate. They regard it as a sacrifice. This is a death cult.
The retailers, on the other hand, signed up for no such sacred mission and they are extremely unhappy with it.
An exchange between direct market retailers and Marvel Comics editors became heated in the closing minutes of Marvel’s Retailer-Only panel at New York Comic Con 2017, starting after a unidentified retailer expressed concern about Marvel’s lenticular variants not selling well in his store.

Marvel executive editors Tom Brevoort and Nick Lowe fielded the question, thanking the obviously upset retailer for his feedback. However, the retailer cut Lowe short to express his distaste for Marvel’s recent trend of replacing or altering its existing characters.

The retailer specifically cited examples such as characters that don’t reflect the ethnicity, gender, or sexuality of their predecessors – specifically expressing his distaste for Iceman “kissing other men,” and Thor “becoming a woman.” The retailer’s complaints sparked an outcry among the other retailers present in the room, some echoing his frustration, with multiple attendees raising their voices to speak over each other.

The original speaker called for “creating new characters and not messing with the old guys. The old guys are solid,” while a second said that Marvel has “never replaced its characters like this.”

Lowe pointed out that the changing nature of the identities of characters was engrained in Marvel’s history, pointing out examples from James Rhodes to Frog Thor. The retailer responded that Marvel has “never replaced them all at once before,” going on to say that he has had Marvel Cinematic Universe fans come into his store to find Avengers comic books only to leave “when they see that Thor is a woman and Captain America is a black man.”
And what's more, the social justice cancer has spread to the Marvel movies now.
The rot of Marvel Comics has finally crept into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not just the rot of Social Justice -- the rot of mediocrity.

On paper the movie sounds awesome. Thor, the God of Thunder, must defend Asgard and the Nine Realms from Hela, the all-powerful Goddess of Death. However, he is stranded on the planet of Sakaar on the other side of the galaxy. Surviving a brutal gladiatorial arena, Thor gathers allies and makes his way home to prevent Ragnarok, the prophesized destruction of Asgard.

In execution, it was as stale as week-old popcorn. With a basic plot, forgettable dialogue and limp characters, I struggled to remain engaged with the movie, much less care about the story. The heart of the problem lies with the movie's poor craftsmanship and its rejection of the mythic.
Well, that's certainly interesting, don't you think? I don't know about you, but I love the smell of opportunity in the morning.

So what? How many of the people reading this now agreed with me back in 2004 when I was slamming George W. Bush and he was riding high in the polls?

People understand things in their own time and on their own schedule, if they ever do. First, John is on the side of Christianity and Western Civilization. Second, John's talent is such that I could not care less what his politics happen to be. I'd publish China Mieville or William Gibson in a heartbeat too. We already publish Martin van Creveld and Steve Keen, neither of whom are men of the Right.

@4 VD

Considering the nature of Children's & YA literature, converting the better series into Graphic Novels is a fascinating synergy for Castalia. I'm also really curious if there's a potential GN into Novel audience. Sort of a one-shot or short-series Graphic Novels as an introduction to the books.

Blogger wreckage October 29, 2017 10:56 AM

I was saying the other day the scariest thing about the SJW and a whole segment of the Left is that they believe that because they are right, there will be no consequences. They believe their moral/feelz/rightness overrides plain facts.

JCW is too kind to them. They do not expect to be martyred; they do not think they CAN be martyred; they expect to FEEL martyr-y and get the accolades for martyrdom and then everything will work out nicely for them because they are good.

Every other religious and political fanatic has understood that there are consequences, and accepted them. The SJW does not believe in consequences or costs.

If Castalia Comics is too be more than a brilliant flash in the pan it will need ongoing stories and dedicated creators. Moth and Cobweb would be an excellent addition.

But no reason to stop there. There are plenty of brilliant artists and writers who are not working because of the nature of the business. The kind of guys who are doing commissions while they work a day job. They dream of steady work but know if they work for the wrong people or support the wrong viewpoint they'll never play for the big leagues.

If CC can crack the distribution problem it can challenge that and make comics a real thing again and not a fading fringe.

Blogger Dave October 29, 2017 11:15 AM

This would be a fantastic candidate for crowd funding. It wouldn't reach the epic height of the Alt Hero campaign but it would keep you cash positive and indicate the demand. More experience running crowd funders wouldn't hurt either.

Mr Wright is neither ignorant nor deliberately dishonest. He’s animated against the altRight because various commentators here disparaged his patchwork family in cuckoo terms.

But his inability to separate the wheat from the chaff due to emotional factors is a problem all men share.

Blogger L' Aristokrato October 29, 2017 11:17 AM

It's pretty simple, really.

SJW types have their sense of identity built around their ideology. As such, they're activists for it, first and foremost, and anything else is incidental.
I this case, it just so happens the task is to make comics, only as pointed out above, to the SJW involved, they are activists first, storytellers second; If that even factors at all.

They are not aiming for failure, nor martyrdom.
To the contrary, they'd love nothing more than to rub success in people's faces, should they ever get the chance to do it. Its just that they would almost never willingly sacrifice pushing their ideology for the sake of that success.

In the case of comics in particular, the issue has been aggravated by the fact that neither Marvel, nor DC have had to succumb to the whims of the market, as they are both banked by Disney/Warner, and thus unable to fail on their own.

Anonymous M. C. Tuggle October 29, 2017 11:25 AM

What it comes down to is that the twitching of the SJW's amygdala is always the most important thing in her life. They have survived in the West primarily because the Central Banks have prevented reality from impinging on their mental illness by funding both people and corporations that are completely disfunctional and bleed money from every pore...When will it end? There's no knowing, but it will end.

Your very next comment proves that you know you were overstating your case.

"This is a quote from his blog. He is either a liar or ignorant."

Then obviously you cannot assert that he is purposefully engaged in slander. As it happens, John Wright is not a liar. He is mistaken, to be sure, perhaps due to ignorance, but I can attest he is not purposefully lying.

Regardless, Mr. Wright's opinions are not the topic here. And all attempts to sow dissension here will be met swiftly with bans. Don't try it again. I'm not even remotely interested in "Jenny, did you hear what Emily said about Suzy" drama.

Vox,

Speaking of angry retailers and distribution channels - when the time comes, will you have some marketing literature that we Ilk can take to local shops? There's a shop near me, and one in my hometown that I'd be happy to hit. Not sure about their politics, so a "make comics great again" approach might resonate more than explaining to them what Alt Right means ... but I'm sure their numbers suck and they would embrace Alt Hero. I'd be honored to help push this from a grass roots level.

Blogger Rez Zircon October 29, 2017 11:48 AM

Not so long before some retailers decide it's not worth the shelf fees to retain Marvel products. [Assuming it's like other retail, where the store pays to have a given brand in their lineup.]

The only thing worse than secular atheism is secular paganism. It IS a death cult, but only in the sense that reality is ignored. They engage in ritual sacrifice, and will wonder why everything is going to hell.
The foundation of Western Civilization is Christ, Truth incarnate, and Truth in general. That is why it was accepted that the earth went around the sun and the whole scientific revolution.

It is too easy for Man to take some wild opinion and not subject it to the test of reason and evidence. That is why the French Revolution ended in the reign of terror. The US had a "Natural Law" tradition and was suspicious of power and even their own ideas.

The SJWs are true believers in a lie. MLKjr said to judge based on the content of one's character. Technically they do, but having multiple children out of wedlock is no longer a sin, bizarre sexual practices (with consent?) aren't, even violence and vandalism aren't sins. Only racism, sexism, etc. are, at least if you don't give enough tribute to Planned Parenthood. Or are the equivalent of the priesthood - Bill Clinton and Harvey Weinstein - they could literally rape women while talking about the problem of sexual harassment.

The Pagan mush the SJWs are doing is worse on several levels. First there is no real heroism - nor villany. They've bought into relativism except for virtue signalling on the X-isms.

There is one danger for the alternative. Christendom requires Christian values. Even some right-wing media wants to load up stories with sexual situations and profanity. Generally I don't see how any storyline should worry about a gay character (they aren't busy saving the world), but similarly hookups. Even the old Pagans had better virtues. Family values includes patriotism (nationalism), but also courage, prudence, temperance, and justice.

The not so subtle shift is to see marriage and family as boring. The heroes aren't sacrificing, nobless oblige, they get to do all the cool stuff while the squares go about their boring lives.

Blogger Lovekraft October 29, 2017 12:40 PM

This isn't hard to figure out, and no amount of deflection on the part of the progressives will change this fact: we don't want to be shamed and guilt-tripped into reading about the struggles of other identity groups, while at the same time being portrayed as the villains.

I want to read an story about a young caucasian male growing up in Europe as his culture is attacked by Euro authoritarians, jihadis, no-go zones etc. I want to read about how he perseveres in the face of random racist attacks on him. I want to read about how he takes on and defeats the identity politics crowd, in allegorical terms that is.

We also have struggles and have no interest in suppressing our own challenges for the sake of diversity.|

TLDR: the left has overplayed their hand, have hijacked our icons instead of creating their own and letting them sink or swim on their own merit.

Virtue-signaling is a form of conspicuous consumption, ostentatiously wasting resources to show everyone how wealthy you are.

Wealthy people and organizations each do many things, but they always have one activity, rarely two, that is massively cash-flow-positive (e.g. Google Adwords, Microsoft Office) and pays for all the others. If virtue-signaling is allowed to interfere with that one thing...

M.C.Tuggle: Odd how Ragnorak featured Nordic gods portrayed by Blacks, but the kingdom of Wakanda in Black Panther has nary a White face.

It's already planned for the sequel. Batman and Wonder Shiksa steal Wakanda's national treasure, Tha 1488-carat Jujustone, and the country collapses into despair, malaise and ruination. Black Flight ensues; and Western honkeys buy up the empty mansions - all built by noble black hands - for pennies on the shekel.

Then the black heroes - Black Panffer, Norbit, Madea, and Harriett Butman - fly in on their hypersonic magic pyramids to fight off the intruders and end the gentrification (a codeword for Black Genocide).

Rolling next to the end credits, there's a celebratory BBQ to shame that pathetic Ewok party, and Tyler Perry's fatsuit kampfs Eddie Murphy's fatsuit for the last chicken wing. Eddie wins by farting in Perry's open mouth (he's a mouth-breever), and shouts Herca-leez! Herca-leez! Aybah laughs, but then Madea pulls a Glock out her titties and busts a cap in his ass. Then Harriett Butman picks up the chicken wang and gets the last, most-satisfying bite. Then she sucks the sauce off Norbit's stubby fat fingers. That was awkward for everyone.

Taika Waititi on casting a 5'4" black girl to play a 6' Viking Shieldmaiden:

"Just because the character was blonde and white in the comic book. That doesn’t matter. That’s not what [that character] is about.' People forget that. Die-hard fans will say, 'That’s not really authentic to the comics,' but as soon as they watch the movie, and they’re involved in the story, and actually what’s happening, everybody forgets . . .Unless it’s the topic of the film, it just shouldn’t even be — what do we even care? I think the story is king, and you want the best person for the job. And Tessa tested against — we cast a very broad net, and Tess was the best person.""

On possibly directing Akira:

"But as movies like Ghost in the Shell have cast white performers in adaptations of Japanese works, the concern for whitewashing remains prevalent. Waititi ensures IGN that this will not be the case.

"Yeah. Actually Asian teenagers would be the way to do it for me and probably no, not, like no name, I mean sort of unfound, untapped talent.""

I heard a pretty good argument for casting Johansson for Mira: She's not actually a human being, she's an android. And if you look at how Japanese draw humans in animes and mangas, they don't look Japanese at all. They look western, or at least no particular ethnicity. So, if they had complete freedom to design an android, then Johansson might well be what they would have designed.

Loki's interaction with sassy mulato womyn made me really angry... (I do not want to spoil the movie)

Anime & Manga designs are intentionally generalized so they have a wider appeal, though not explicitly outside of Japan. At least in the early days. (People forget that Northern & Southern Japanese do have slightly different features, even if the country's population is dominated by Edoites.) While the style is distinctively Japanese, the characters really aren't. (Though, really, that's mostly due to speed reasons than anything Globalist.)

ScarJo was the right choice for the Major, though the movie was always going to suffer from Hollywood thinking it's an action movie. Ghost in the Shell properties are always far more Blade Runner in nature, thus some form of Techno-Thriller. It really doesn't work for a Big Budget movie.

Last little point, and something no Japanese will ever admit publicly, but they view themselves as fair-skinned. Something they look down on the other East Asians over, so ScarJo was never going to bother them. They viewed is positively, but it was something for the SJWs to make a fuss about.

Blogger tublecane October 29, 2017 3:11 PM

They may worship Death in real life or on comics, though I don't think they realize it on either case. They produced material no one wants to read because they must. That's what they do.

But is it a case of "keep SJW-ing, though the heavens fall?" Or in their heart of hearts do they imagine sales will rebound any day because they're right, dangit?

Blogger Markku October 29, 2017 3:19 PM

Last little point, and something no Japanese will ever admit publicly, but they view themselves as fair-skinned.

A bit more specifically, they view fairness of skin as the most important sign of privilege. Because they have a skin type that tans extremely quickly. So, if your skin is white, it means you have never worked on a field. This is why geishas paint their faces completely white.

Blogger Markku October 29, 2017 3:21 PM

Amusingly, when my sister was in Japan the first time, she saw a procession of geishas from a geisha school. She was with Japanese friends at the time, who told her that this is such a rare sight that Japanese usually go through their lives without seeing a single geisha in training.

Blogger Markku October 29, 2017 3:24 PM

They were all like, this did NOT just happen to someone who only just stepped her foot in Japan the first time...

It's like, we Finns have been telling Americans all our lives that no, there are no polar bears in Finland. Like, at all. Then, one escapes from a zoo, and the first thing an American sees when going to town, is a polar bear walking down the street.

*facepalm*

Given the amount of tourists certain places get, the "it's only happened once!" events invariably have an American standing there by sheer dumb luck.

What Waititi says would be uplifting if the script gave Valkyrie anything to do other than grrrrrl power.

"The heart of the problem lies with the movie's poor craftsmanship and its rejection of the mythic."

And that sums up a good deal of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a nut shell and ALL of the Thor movies. Clark's Law (more like often uncritically swallowed maxim, but whatever), not really magical at all Alien versions of Marvel 616 Asgard is BOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNGGGGGG, especially since they didn't even have the common courtesy when designing the MCU to AT LEAST make heavy hitters like Thor and Hulk city busters, not even high block busters or building busters!

Say what you want about the DCEU, and there's plenty of things to loathe, but at least they didn't fucking make Wondie, as much as many here may hate feminism, and the Olympians into Clark's Law Aliens. They kept them fuckig' Greek pagan gods (even if from what little we know about them in the DCEU, they're considerably less powerful than their real life or any given mainstream comic universe counterparts) and kept Diana an Amazon.
Though... I did hear that one of the ideas floated around for years after Man of Steel was released was to make Wondie Kryptonian, which was about the only thing I agreed was retarded with one of my feminist class mates in college, but hey, at least the film makers realized this was stupid and didn't go THAT direction.

Also, the DCEU just has all around better action scenes and action direction. Like, no contest... aside from the shaky cam. I have yet to see, in live action films, a better superhero cinematic universe that adequately captures the raw power and scope of its heroes so well and viscerally... Suicide Squad not withstanding. Oh sure, there are more powerful cinematic superhero verses, but not that really hit home just how momentously mighty the characters on screen truly are. It really makes me wish Thor and Hulk were a lot less metro-sexually emasculated in comparison.

I mean, just look at this charge here between Hulk and Abomination, two peer level opponents that you THINK would cause more collateral to show you how much more energy they're releasing in the actual collision itself:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuM47tjCbow

And compare it to a similar charge between Superman and Zod, who are also peer level opponents:

There's a scene in one of the Zaitoichi movies where he says, "I have skin as white as a prince," or something to that effect.

@67 Sillan Bono: "when you realise that she serves no purpose at all to the story"

IMDB has been surprisingly lenient in allowing several of my recent movie/tv show reviews to go through. I am slowly turning up the heat, so to speak, and I suspect that my shredding of race-switching Valkyrie may end up getting me banned (yet again lolz).

Go ahead. Spoil it. We all can already see a lot of the things going on in it and I'm not going to waste money to see it. I'll just get it on bootleg if I even want to watch it.

"It surprised me that people who spend their money at comic cons and read about heroes are so afraid and un-heroic in their own code to stand for something."

No, that's just how most people who are fans of something featuring people who are better them (or, at least, supposed to be) tend to be. That's not surprising. That's like saying water is wet.

You know, I kinda they do try and sue you. Not because you'd lose, but because you'd win and you'd properly destroy them right and quick and hopefully make the news and stuff and wipe the smug smiles off the faces of their lefty fans when they end up having to cut their comics production arms. XD

Taking th comic book shop owners with you on a death ride is a pretty cowardly way to go out. I hope a large part of the Alt Hero mission is finding and recruiting comic book shop owners to carry the physical product.

Having a grateful retail channel will undermine the economics of the converged comic book industry.

I saw yet another trashy trailer for Justice League.
The Flash looks gay. Normally I wouldn't even consider such but there is something creepy about him.
Wonder Woman can't hold it.
Aquaman was A. Blonde, and B. had no power of flight. I'm not sure who/why they have the actor portraying him.
Ben Affleck should reprise Daredevil - well any crusader in a suit.
And I almost forgot
I am the Cy Borg. Resistance is Futile. You won't be pushed to assimilate.

The only upside is the ancient hardcopies are still there and not subject to the current cultural vandalism.

Frog Thor.

Loki turns Thor into a frog for three or four great issues and they use that as an excuse to ret-con how Mjolnir works?

Not only that, but the only reason Thor is "unworthy" of his hammer is because Nick Fury called him a dick.

Now, no honest Christian would burn a pinch of incense to Caesar, and call him a god, for any amount of money. Not even the threat of death stirs the heart of the martyr." The esteemed Mr Wright is quite wrong about this modern Christianity does this.

Black disapproval makes you unworthy. But not female disapproval. Sounds misogynist.

The retailer pays rent (or mortgage), lights, staff, and for the shelves themselves. If the manufacturer isn't paying for placement, then the retailer is.
