The filthy fat man

Why is Harvey Weinstein not finished in Hollywood already?
Two decades ago, the Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein invited Ashley Judd to the Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel for what the young actress expected to be a business breakfast meeting. Instead, he had her sent up to his room, where he appeared in a bathrobe and asked if he could give her a massage or she could watch him shower, she recalled in an interview.

“How do I get out of the room as fast as possible without alienating Harvey Weinstein?” Ms. Judd said she remembers thinking.

In 2014, Mr. Weinstein invited Emily Nestor, who had worked just one day as a temporary employee, to the same hotel and made another offer: If she accepted his sexual advances, he would boost her career, according to accounts she provided to colleagues who sent them to Weinstein Company executives. The following year, once again at the Peninsula, a female assistant said Mr. Weinstein badgered her into giving him a massage while he was naked, leaving her “crying and very distraught,” wrote a colleague, Lauren O’Connor, in a searing memo asserting sexual harassment and other misconduct by their boss.

“There is a toxic environment for women at this company,” Ms. O’Connor said in the letter, addressed to several executives at the company run by Mr. Weinstein.

An investigation by The New York Times found previously undisclosed allegations against Mr. Weinstein stretching over nearly three decades, documented through interviews with current and former employees and film industry workers, as well as legal records, emails and internal documents from the businesses he has run, Miramax and the Weinstein Company.

During that time, after being confronted with allegations including sexual harassment and unwanted physical contact, Mr. Weinstein has reached at least eight settlements with women, according to two company officials speaking on the condition of anonymity. Among the recipients, The Times found, were a young assistant in New York in 1990, an actress in 1997, an assistant in London in 1998, an Italian model in 2015 and Ms. O’Connor shortly after, according to records and those familiar with the agreements....

Dozens of Mr. Weinstein’s former and current employees, from assistants to top executives, said they knew of inappropriate conduct while they worked for him. Only a handful said they ever confronted him.

Mr. Weinstein enforced a code of silence; employees of the Weinstein Company have contracts saying they will not criticize it or its leaders in a way that could harm its “business reputation” or “any employee’s personal reputation,” a recent document shows. And most of the women accepting payouts agreed to confidentiality clauses prohibiting them from speaking about the deals or the events that led to them.

Charles Harder, a lawyer representing Mr. Weinstein, said it was not unusual to enter into settlements to avoid lengthy and costly litigation. He added, “It’s not evidence of anything.”

At Fox News, where the conservative icons Roger E. Ailes and Bill O’Reilly were accused of harassment, women have received payouts well into the millions of dollars. But most of the women involved in the Weinstein agreements collected between roughly $80,000 and $150,000, according to people familiar with the negotiations.

In the wake of Ms. O’Connor’s 2015 memo, some Weinstein Company board members and executives, including Mr. Weinstein’s brother and longtime partner, Bob, 62, were alarmed about the allegations, according to several people who spoke on the condition of anonymity. In the end, though, board members were assured there was no need to investigate.
I tend to doubt there is a person on the planet who is genuinely shocked by this, or that Weinstein expects to be able to skate by on his behavior - again - for reasons that no one could possibly ever know or anticipate.

It's long past time for the media to dig deeply into the moral sewer that is Hollywood.

Conservative Treehouse has a interesting take on this.

The Left (media) is making an example of him to make sure Hollywood keeps the money flowing to the Leftist politicians and their causes.

About Weinstein himself:

What a nasty looking person. He's the personification of a corrupt perverted Hollywood producer.

The character Tom Cruise played in Tropic Thunder was supposed to be a parody of Weinstein.

Clearly, women need to be more careful who they get molested, harassed or assaulted by. Conservatives pay out 10:1 on lefties.

The right: not just better in bed, more attractive, and better husband material, we're also the thinking woman's choice of pervert.

@2 Mister Excitement

Sundance is probably correct. Maybe not to the specific reasoning, but a big player doesn't get hit in public like this without having a major falling out with another major player. He might have run afoul of someone besides the Clintons, but it was someone without enough pull to prevent the stories from being squelched.

There's a definite "Defending the Perimeter" aspect to this. They keep people in-line by attacking the ones that go outside of specific lines. FrameGame (if you've seen him on twitter) had some really good explanations for the pattern, as it allows the power players to prevent too much opposition to build.

You asked and answered your own question. Since at least Sunset Boulevard through Scream and Mulholland Drive Hollywood has been broadcasting this fact. The media will not dig into this because it is complicit. Everyone outside the media needs to emphasize this, repeat it, and amplify it, since delegitimizing them in order to force people to disassociate themselves from Hollywood is the only solution. Show the toxicity to force people to recoil from all of Hollywood. Shame and disgust are our weapons here. As Bannon said, we need to keep pressure on Trump and such administration as he has. Trump and USG, when forced to are our instrument. Constant exposure are the fuel.

2 Decades before she was offended by it. Fire at Weinstein with her but as soon as he is vanquished the scrutiny should be turned up on her. By keeping silent for 2 decades she enabled his behavior. What other executives does she know about? We can shame her or we can shame some other names she might just now be recalling. It's her choice.

Anonymous Looking Glass October 06, 2017 7:17 AM

@28 ZhukovG

That's very possible. The Chinese have been buying up Hollywood because they need to buy skills they can't replicate, but there's something about the Chinese that most people miss. They're actually much better at Business than the Jews. Their culture still has a "builder" aspect to it, while the diaspora Jews are much more "intermediary" in nature. Those types of issues matter at the edge-cases, which is what Hollywood actually is.

There's also the reality that Hollywood is both corrupt & incompetent. I imagine the ChiComs analyzed it and realized it was utterly ripe to take it over. By the time the elite Jews realize they've been played (and are thus commissioning staunchly racist, anti-Chinese pieces in the NYT & WaPo), it'll be too late. They'll be ejected from one of their biggest influence positions in the West.

It's the same gameplan the Japanese companies did on a few areas of Tech during the 80s. Cameras are almost wholly Japanese at this point. I expect the results to be the same, that the Chinese eventually take it over, and the American response to be in kind. Which means we'll build something new.

Considering China is still on a collision course with Economic Reality, I expect there actually to be a lot of similarities to the Japanese situation. And I can't say I'd be sad for the Movie Industry to die and being rebuilt to American ends.

Blogger Al From Bay Shore October 06, 2017 7:32 AM

@2 Thanks for referencing the CTH article. It was certainly insightful. It made me think about the converged institutions (film, comics, gaming, professional football) in our midst. They have an odd tendency to attack their consumers. The culture wars appear to be an uprising of the consumers who demand the things they use for leisure to not be used solely as political platforms to lecture.

Diversity and Comics uses an expression to describe the consequences of convergence, "no escapism". This is when SJWs (or ideologues) commandeer institutions and form them into tools to be used for purposes other than what they were originally formed to do. We seek leisure but the SJWs won't have it and, as a result, many close their wallets. This seems to be the gist of the CTH article. Harvey was a sacrificed for reasons that have nothing to do with the enforcement of decent codes of human behavior.

"The worst of the worst ascending to the top of business and politics has always fascinated me."

In general, SJWs are low competence, so they constantly agitate for environments where there is no objective mechanism to evaluate their actions (credentialism, everyone gets a trophy, everyone’s opinion is valuable…). The evil and the amoral are temperamentally advantaged in competitive settings where there is no practical accountability. Predators and psychopaths have always been good at hiding their natures, but SJWism necessarily creates the conditions for them to thrive, so long as they mouth the narrative.

I wonder how much deranged Hollywood shrieking about toxic masculinity is just an expression of the psychological trauma that comes from knowing that everything you have came stemmed from an intimate knowledge of some Harvey type’s sweaty rolls. It isn't as if these are the most grounded people to begin with.

The thing about Hollywood is that it likes to pretend it's Hollywood! They still buy into their late 1930s and early forties image.

Just look at Oscar night, the serious contenders for best actress always dress like it's 1939.

A big part of that image is the Mogul.

Weinstein loved playing to that stereotype. If you act like a Hollywood Player, you must be a Hollywood Player. Which means screaming a lot.

His real talent was playing to the Academy's genre snobbery and getting them to vote for his films. Even if there was a much better option.

Throughout the 90s, Miramax's entire business plan was built around creating films specifically tailored to the Academy's delicate sensibilities, banking on the added exposure a win would bring. This plan was put to the test in 1998, when Miramax's Shakespeare in Love was nominated alongside Saving Private Ryan, which spent the summer making every war film that had ever won an Oscar look like a high school play. It was a foregone conclusion Saving Private Ryan would win. And then the campaign started.

The month leading up to the Academy Awards are like an especially petty high school election, if high school students had access to the money cannon that made Transformers 2 possible. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, "Miramax spent an estimated $16 million (about $2,700 for each academy member) on its Shakespeare (in Love) campaign." Miramax also leaned on journalists to criticize Private Ryan for being historically inaccurate, a ballsy maneuver when you consider that Ryan's storming of Normandy made veterans of that battle shit their theater seats, and Miramax's film turned Shakespeare's creative process into a gender bending romantic comedy.

Didn't matter. On the night of the Awards, Shakespeare in Love shocked everyone by winning Best Picture award out from under the Citizen Kane of modern war films.

Their world is full of those things, so they accuse us of it. And no matter how much of it is eliminated in the rest of the country, it's still rampant in Hollywood because they exempt themselves from the rules they apply to us, so they see it just as much and therefore project it just as much.

Contrast the treatment of Weinstein with Bill Cosby. The difference: Bill Cosby stepped out of line when he told blacks to take responsibility for their own actions. Weinstein would never commit such an unforgivable sin, thus, his indiscretions may be overlooked.

Weinstein's vile behavior is observably no different than Trump. Both seek sexual gratification to satisfy their base urges. Both are in positions of authority and demand that womenfolk placate their desires in order to move up the ladder of success.

In the end, so what if they objectify women? As Trump eloquently said, "grab them by the pussy". Roissy and Roosh would in a heartbeat. That's what they promote.

I wonder what a pious Christian would say regarding the shared experiences of these fine, upstanding gentlemen.

It does not matter about Harvey. He is just another rich celeb who has gotten to the point where his money is more useful than his influence and favors. As long as important rich (male) celebs can reward the willing females with a promising (and financially rewarding) career and fame of their own, they will eagerly trade sexual favors and have many times already and will again, should they ever feel they need to.

There has always been a ready supply of lovely women willing to use sex to get ahead....get ahead in publicity, get ahead in husbands, get ahead in their very public career, and get ahead in money. There may actually be women who do not use sex to get ahead in life, but very honestly....I never met any of them. Without sex, they would have very little to trade.

For the vast majority of women, Harvey would not interest them very much because Harvey could not benefit them very much or give them what they want. To get what they want, they have to find a man that they can trade with and they do. In the end, they make a deal with a man to get what they want and sex is part of the deal. Has there ever been a time when that was not true? But of course, we have to make that sort of thing a major tort....so they can shake the money tree....and soon they will want to make it into a crime. In fairness, it is neither a tort or a crime any more than ordinary prostitution. Yes, I know....it is illegal, but only if the policeman happens to be watching. Without the policeman watching, it would just be another example of a woman trading sexual favors for money (or influence, or real estate, whatever you got).

Americans do not actually have a word that would describe rich celebs who accept, or demand, or expect sexual favors from women they barely know. (In this day and age, I would describe it as "reckless".) The British have the word "cad", which is not exactly the same thing. After all, the rich celebs are not low-life upstarts who dare to have sex with well-bred women. Nor are they one of Princess Diana's graceful lovers, who later brag about the experience.

What about the women themselves? They are a willing party to the exchange as well and by all accounts the sexual favors were provided either enthusiastically, or reluctantly, or with resignation. Yes, if she goes through with the deal and accepts the reward and does not mention it until twenty years later....she was willing. (She just wants more money.)

Do we have a word to describe the female side of the exchange? No, because it is not considered unusual behavior for a woman. But we live in a time when people believe that men should be shamed, punished, or at least be required to pay more money for sex with women they know from work. It does not seem to matter whether there was an actual grievance at the time....we can have one twenty years later if we need to, like Marilyn Monroe's diary.

It's actually, no enemies when they sign your paycheck.

For Hollywood to get cleaned up would take thousands of impalements and crucifixions. Once you were done all the money people would be dead along with all their enablers. There wouldn't be much left. They're all complicit. I seriously doubt there would be a functioning industry left.

Actually, Rocket Man could sanitize the place in a single day. The schadenfreude would be awesome. The junkyard shitzu likely will not be doing this as those who hold his leash are being conned by folks like Weinstein to invest all those dollah.

While this may be true of some people, I think you miscommunicated here. "We live in a time when people believe that men should be shamed, punished, or at least be required to pay more money for sex cajoled from women via work-related benefits and penalties." Would be considerably more accurate.

While, yes, a woman who agreed to it at the time is still basically a whore, it should never have happened in the first place outside of actual prostitution jobs. Do these women have any call to bring it up now? No. Can they? Sure, but they should also be prosecuted for accepting it at the time. If they want to call the legality of the action they willingly participated in at the time into play, they need to be liable for it too.

However, if they did not willingly participate, there should be no negative repercussions for them unless they are found to be lying.

If they did not willingly participate, they should have called the police to report a rape at the first opportunity.

I have no idea why you think only streetwalkers are prostitutes or only prostitutes trade in sexual favors. I do not call them prostitutes because I see it as normal female behavior. In that regard, the only difference between a wife and a hooker is the variety of their clientele and how well they know the man they are having sex with. You seem to think there is a bright red line separating those who only accept cash from those who accept American Express.

Blogger Azure Amaranthine October 06, 2017 1:52 PM

"If they did not willingly participate, they should have called the police to report a rape at the first opportunity."

Agreed, but not everyone's attitude is that brave. To me, as long as they did not knowingly accept remuneration for the act ("pay"), there's no reason they should have to remain quiet later on or face similar prosecution.

"I have no idea why you think only streetwalkers are prostitutes or only prostitutes trade in sexual favors."

I don't think that. I'm not really sure where you got the idea that I did, except that perhaps you assumed that because I disagreed with you I am of the same vein of people that you normally disagree with.

The only bright red line I draw between a prostitute and a wife is that the wife is (generally understood to be) accepting currency that has "ultimate value", where the prostitute is not.

That's just crazy talk. Most media personalities would physically attack a rabid wolf with a plastic butter knife if they thought it would get them "inside" Hollywood, and they could leave their status as Journ-O-List behind to become a Hollywood "player".

Probably the more interesting aspect of the story is the timing. Just who decided to lower the boom, and why now? Weinstein was apparently a big Hilary supporter and probably sluiced cash to other Democrat candidates and causes over the years, so you would expect his prog friends to be grateful, or at least wanting to keep the money taps open.

My personal theory is since the Clinton Brand has no value any more, Weinstein's support of the Clinton faction makes him suspect to the various factions vying for power inside the DNC. Getting rid of him prevents both a Clinton comeback (remember Chelsea is still out there) and puts a well heeled money man out of the reach of other contenders (I suspect he rebuffed one of the various factions or identity groups inside the DNC).

The truth is probably going to be far stranger, and challenge our credulity and powers of imagination.

Whoa, there. The line between whoring yourself out for your career and "actual" rape is miles thick. You're ignoring a whole range of creepy, unethical, unprofessional, and possibly criminal or tortious behavior that nevertheless does not constitute rape.

What we're talking about here is harassment and "unwanted sexual contact" (which is called that instead "sexual assault" and the like for a reason), not rape. Though maybe Weinstein raped people, too.

If they had that kind of rectal fortitude, they wouldn't be in this situation to begin with.

"You're ignoring a whole range of creepy, unethical, unprofessional, and possibly criminal or tortious behavior that nevertheless does not constitute rape."

True, but not particularly necessary to discuss. For our purposes, if she accepts any form of "pay" for her "services", she's behaving like a prostitute. If she weren't open to it (being paid for "services"), her violated feelings/morals/honor/what-have-you would cause her to reject it as being of insufficient value (value here NOT referring solely to money or job benefits).

Obviously if it is not actually related to the job, and involves anything sexual, it can be any of weird/creepy/molestive/sexual assault/rape. If it's forced on her, it's morally wrong by current understanding (I won't go into that here, especially as I am undecided), but if she accepts some form of payment for it, she is in a sense agreeing to the arrangement. This is not something that human law has the capacity or "sharpness" to divide between, body from soul.

What Weinstein did was wrong, but by accepting settlements and etc. for it, those women are also tacitly involved in that wrongdoing. If they want to prosecute now, they should also be prosecuted. I'll also note that the line between harassment and acceptable behaviour in modern society exists only in the victim/not-victim's mind. Good luck finding the objective line on that one, because our society is already a century or more off to the side of it.

In the Altiverse, that is where common sense prevails and someone like, if not the doppleganger of John C Wright reigns as philosopher king, ... I won't describe Weinstine's fate to keep this polite, but his supporters, sycophants, followers, etc. would all be exiled, deported, imprisoned, or subject to castration or worse.

But this shows the ... vapidity of the left as they will allow such a creep to pollute their environs - no sane or thinking person, nor anyone with a drop of empathy would not be moved to sever his head and place it on a pike in a very public place with a webcam watching the carrion birds deal with his remains.

(Wine Stine? I thought they were for Beer or Mead?)

The left accepts the most corrupt monsters if they virtue signal. The right does not, but has lowered its standards in that a platoon of women who would not otherwise be a threat was sent against the conservative paladins that would never strike a woman - so are getting slaughtered.

Of course this was obvious during the Clinton, rapist, presidency, with double the hypocrisy after Clarence Thomas' "high=tech lynching".

The left is about power. The (alt-)right is about virtue. Both are about winning or otherwise doing what is necessary.

Are you a non-native English speaker, or did you just NOT LISTEN to the actual words comin' out of Trump's mouth? He was NOT describing his own actions or behaviors; he was describing the behavior OF THE WOMEN around a rich man: "THEY LET YOU grab 'em by the pussy." THEY = the WOMEN! Can you not understand that; it's pretty simple Euglish, after all. He was saying (accurately) that that the WOMEN 'offer themselves up' to the rich guy. (Which they DO!)

How can you damned lefties and trolls actually NOT parse a very simple sentence in English!? Oh, right, sorry I forgot -- the truth NEVER matters!

Anonymous Pennywise October 07, 2017 2:43 PM

More Christian charity. You are in a giving mood. He certainly was describing his own actions and behaviors by which he was offering himself up.

“I moved on her, and I failed. I’ll admit it,” Trump is heard saying. It was unclear when the events he was describing took place. The tape was recorded several months after he married his third wife, Melania.

“Whoa,” another voice said.

“I did try and f--- her. She was married,” Trump says.

Trump continues: “And I moved on her very heavily. In fact, I took her out furniture shopping. She wanted to get some furniture. I said, ‘I’ll show you where they have some nice furniture.’”

“I moved on her like a bitch, but I couldn’t get there. And she was married,” Trump says.

“I’ve got to use some Tic Tacs, just in case I start kissing her,” Trump says. “You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait.”

“And when you’re a star, they let you do it,” Trump says. “You can do anything.”

Next time, sweetie, try better.
