Hammer vs Captain Europa

Two new Alt★Hero Rewards that may prove to be of some interest to backers, especially to RPGers. But how would Hammer, who is American, ever happen to find himself in combat with Captain Europa of the EU's Global Justice Initiative? Well, you're going to have to read the comics to find out.

$25.00
Add-On: Site Hero

Commenting on the Alt★Hero site will be limited to campaign backers and site subscribers in order to reduce the amount of SJW vandalism. Site Heros will receive a subscription to the website, the ability to create new topics, the ability to edit the wiki (subject to moderator approval and discipline), a series of special icons available only to them, and a dedicated forum. Please note that SJWs who use this Reward to infiltrate the site for the purposes of vandalism, politics, or social justice will be identified and stripped of both their backer and Site Hero status.

$75.00
Role-Playing Game

A superhero role-playing game rulebook of an estimated 250 pages, set in the Alt★Hero universe and published in hardcover. The game will be written by an accomplished RPG designer with Chuck Dixon and Vox Day. (Note: it is estimated that the time required to create and test the game is about one year.) Backers receive the hardcover edition of the rulebook, a paperback version of Campaign #1 written by Jon Del Arroz, (this is not yet noted on Freestartr yet), a PDF version of the rulebook and PDF versions of all campaigns created for the Alt★Hero RPG published in the first year after the initial publication of the rulebook. RPG backers will also be provided exclusive access to a dedicated RPG forum on the Alt★Hero site where drafts and design ideas will be posted for discussion.

And yes, shipping is included for the RPG rulebook. Even if you live in Europe. Or Australia. And we will use Infogalactic to provide the engine for the Alt★Hero wiki. And the RPG designer is a very good one who absolutely knows what he's doing.

Never take your eyes off your opponent Hammer.

Solid action scene.

I may go for the Site Hero, excellent idea. I have not played role games since early part-time college years.

Hey VD

Too late in the game for this to be added to rewards but when this launches I would love to be able to buy another copy of whatever volume this artist, or any of the 2d artists, is working on but with just the pencil art. No inking or coloring. I would pay extra for that.

For reference for versus debates I may or may not get into once Alt-Hero actually releases and causes and even bigger splash than it already has, how powerful is Captain Europa and Hammer? IE, where do they both fall on under this scale?

http://vsbattles.wikia.com/wiki/Tiering_System#The_Scale

My guess is that both would be building level in some form or another at their best, especially considered Chuck Dixon's involvement and his love for smaller scale, street level (at least in role, though not necessarily power level, as the scale defines it) characters.

Also, will both of their feats be fairly consistent as opposed to Marvel and DC who, while having gotten better about it, still resort to massive PIS (Plot. Instigated. Stupidity) and WIS (Writer. Instigated. Stupidity) way too often?

Also, will we get some concrete numbers for their feats to eliminate vagueness as much as possible, which can be killer in versus debates that come down to the wire?

@15 So far, all we've seen is that normal SWAT-style humans with guns/tasers are essentially powerless against a physical Sequens like Dynamique, and that Captain Europa beats her casually (at least by surprise). Various countries spend money to induct and keep Sequens-squads, and others don't. The ones that don't haven't already been casually destroyed.

We know that truly world-changing powers like global instantaneous complete telepathy/mind control aren't in effect because they would have had to already be noted.

The first superhero RPG I recall was Villains and Vigilantes, which was pretty good. Character creation was somewhat random. The second one I recall was Champions by Hero Games, which allowed character design using a point system.

At some point, I believe Champions produced a short-lived comic book series to tie into the game (not the Champions title by Marvel Comics). In the back of each issue, I think they dedicated a page or two to a character from the issue to show how he or she would be designed using the point-based Hero Games rules. It was a cool way to tie in the comic book into the game.

Well, they didn't throw out SJWs on sight. If anything, the mods there were amenable authorities.

I think the point of the paid model is to make coming back hurt the pocket, and the run of the mill SJW who engages in such low-level activities tends to be dirt poor, if Tumblr is any indication of that.

Either way:

-There's no interest in Alt-Hero
-Alt-Hero won't be funded
-Alt-Hero won't meet its funding goal
-Alt-Hero won't good art
-Alt-Hero won't have a good storyline
-Alt-Hero won't be released <- You are here
-Alt-Hero won't break even
-Alt-Hero won't be in comic stores
-Alt-Hero won't be popular
-Alt-Hero won't have a movie
-Alt-Hero won't have tie-in games
-Alt-Hero won't have tie-in action figurines
-Alt-Hero won't have Saturday morning cartoons
-Alt-Hero won't have a TV series

Don't forget Mutants and Masterminds. That was great, and a point buy system that touted itself as allowing you to be whatever kind of superhero you wanted to be.

But like I mentioned before, each hero profile on the wiki could probably have a section like that, explaining their stat breakdown and how to build them using the Alt-Hero TTRPG system.

A wiki could allow participants to convert your Alt★Hero characters to *any* RPG system, in theory. Characters could have any number of stats attached to them.

@38 The Observer

I know we're getting a tad bit ahead of ourselves at the exact moment, but some thoughts on Movies/TV Shows.

Notice the had two hits in the 50s & 60s (Superman & Batman) with an assortment of cartoons in the 70s. They were part of the Branding aspect to specific heroes. Modern Super Hero movies don't work for Brand reasons. It's not the "idea" of Superman that attracts an audience there, it's the "idea" of a larger than life fight and a character you're familiar with. Even Superman & Batman aren't a property like Transformers, where you just want to watch giant robots fight.

What's made the modern super hero movies work is they've put massive creative talent behind it, along with money and a slow build. If "Iron Man" hadn't worked, Marvel wouldn't be doing what they are. (And notice how much trouble Warner/DC has had getting their movies off the ground.)

Which is a longer route to point out that what has worked for both Marvel, but far more DC, has been Animation. Bruce Timm + Paul Dini deserve a lot of credit for that, but that was the big Comic Revival in the mainstream culture of the 80s & 90s: high-quality storytelling in tween-targeted animation.

Super hero stories work much better as either drawn or animated. It takes a massive budget to make the story work for a Movie because the "cool stuff" is really expensive.

Blogger maniacprovost October 22, 2017 5:50 PM

each hero profile on the wiki could probably have a section like that, explaining their stat breakdown and how to build them using the Alt-Hero TTRPG system

I like it. You're essentially going to HAVE to include a character stat sheet in the wiki, if you have an RPG.

Here's a problem, though.... people are going to be able to read the comics and say, wait a minute, Rebel has Coordination of 8 and Initiative of 7. She could never be disarmed by Dr. Science's minions, which only have 1d6 initiative and Coordination of 2d4.

Eh, it'll be fine.

In principle, if you do it right, it would be a good way to maintain character consistency.

Any discrepancies will just build fan base engagement as angry nerds war it out in the forums.

Yeah, but it would make sense for the official wiki to have the conversions for the official tie-in RPG, as opposed to other systems which can be bandied about anywhere else.

Also to note that not every hero needs to be measured against the yardstick of the flying brick or combat ability - Soulsight appears to fit nicely into the "support" category, if guesses about his powers are right. Given the Dark Lord's emphasis on 4GW, I'm sure there will be Sequens whose powers fall into that bracket - for example, someone who had the power to turn populations against vigilantes could very well demoralise them and deny them places to blend in with their day-to-day identities. That could be arguably more damaging than straight-up punching them in the face like Europa and Hammer are doing to each other.

"Super speed, strength, and flight has been shown or hinted at."

1. Cool... to what degree though? I mean, that's the important thing here, though, from what was said earlier, apparently the characters aren't going to be capable of generating the energy or tanking the energy released in this, I reckon, right?

https://youtu.be/xqlaXylsMwQ?t=3m59s

And they CERTAINLY aren't going to be generating or tanking the amount of energy released in here, I reckon:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCEmrH42FKM

"A tank was battered but not utterly crushed or torn in half. I'm guessing there is an upper level on strength."

Define battered? Like, it armor looked to be pierced? Also, what model of tank was this, because depending the model, the weight and durability also depends (for example, an Abrams weighs more than a Sherman and is also more durable).

@47

"Also to note that not every hero needs to be measured against the yardstick of the flying brick or combat ability"

Never said I was. I didn't even mention specific superhero archetypes or combat ability (though, I take combat ability to just mean skill, not Destructive Capacity/Attack Potency as you may). I was just asking what was the highest amount of Destructive Capacity/Attack Potency and Durability we'd see with The Hammer and Europa and in the series at large (at least for now).

"Soulsight appears to fit nicely into the "support" category, if guesses about his powers are right. Given the Dark Lord's emphasis on 4GW, I'm sure there will be Sequens whose powers fall into that bracket - for example, someone who had the power to turn populations against vigilantes could very well demoralise them and deny them places to blend in with their day-to-day identities. That could be arguably more damaging than straight-up punching them in the face like Europa and Hammer are doing to each other."

Unless, of course, Europa and Hammer, say, don't care and have the Destructive Capacity/Attack Potency and Durability to kill all those populations with both hands tied behind their backs if they really wanted to, and even if every single polity on earth with nukes decided to and succeeded in nuking them directly. Not saying Hammer or Europa are that powerful in DC/AP and Durability, since despite the vagueness so far, they don't even seem to be within an order of magnitude, just pointing out that 4GW warfare really might not be an applicable strategy once an opponent gets beyond a certain level of power and ability that the 4GW users cannot reasonably contest. I mean, crap, even 4GW warriors need stuff somewhat on a part with their opponents, like RPG's and IEDs to stop tanks on occasion. There isn't a whole lot 4GW can do to help, say, baseline humans with baseline human powers and ability with roughly today's level of military/civilian tech against, say, an Imperium of Man Mars-Class Battleruiser that just wanted to life wipe the entire planet for Teh Lulz.

http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Mars-class_Battlecruiser

Again, not denying the usefulness of heroes with more support/utility oriented stuff, like Mind Hax, especially in the context of plot, I just want to know the Max Destructive Capabilities/Attack Potency of Hammer and Europa and the series at large (at least for now).

Though, while we're on the subject, in the context of a one on one or even multiples on multiples versus battle, Mind Hax that work on normal plebs is kind of useless if the other side has sufficient psionic resistance and/or if the Mind Hax user doesn't have the speed/reaction time to use it quickly enough or if the Mind Hax itself doesn't work quickly enough to, say, stop a speedster from splattering the Mind Hax person(s) in time.

Consostency is the cancer that has turned modern comix into huge pools of faggotry and bad storytelling.

The Observer wrote:Don't forget Mutants and Masterminds. That was great, and a point buy system that touted itself as allowing you to be whatever kind of superhero you wanted to be.

Mutants and Masterminds was a bit after my time. I kind of liked the first version of Villains and Vigilantes, back in the early 1980s, before Jeff Dee revamped it into a point-based system.

It was not required, but it was recommended that you start with yourself. The intent was that your character would be a superpowered version of yourself. Then you rolled to determine how many powers/skills you would get. You would then roll on various tables to determine what those powers were and how strong they were. You would throw out two of the powers, and then, using your own creativity, try to find some common theme that would justify how these random assortment of powers were linked. The randomness meant some characters were a lot more powerful than others.

Champions came along and made all the characters basically equal in ability by giving everyone the same number of points to spend on powers. You could say that the customization of Champions was an improvement in some ways, but I think V&V's system ironically allowed random chance to create some of the more interesting characters.

Not sure exactly what you're asking; if you want additional items listed on the campaign page such as Paperback #2 and #3 then hit the "Donate Now" button for each item. You'll receive email confirmation for each item and can verify status under "My Dashboard - Contribution History".

If you're asking about selecting an item multiple times, I would think each time you hit the "Donate Now" button you will accumulate that item. I haven't tried it myself. Let us know what happens if you attempt it.

@75 - thanks for another excellent graph of the data, Man of the Atom.
Much appreciated.

Spitting this out there - a fanart of the week section. Mods/admin pick a selection of 3-5 pieces on fanart submitted that week, and people vote on which they like best. Winner goes on the front page for the next week.

is there going to be another campaign for those of us who are suddenly interested in the RPG add-on, but don't get paid until the campaign is over?

Blogger The Observer October 23, 2017 1:05 AM

@80: VD has said the books will be sold when the RPG is ready.

That's some nice fan art Thot. Keep it up!

Blogger VD October 23, 2017 3:46 AM

Fan art powers activate!

That's really good, but you might want to note that Dynamique is 5'9" and Rebel is more like 5'5".

If I want to add additional levels of backing to one I've already done, is it best to do so on my own, or through the support at Freestartr? I want to clarify, because there are several more things that I'd like to add to the cart.

To be precise, I would simply write out exactly what you want and email the Freestartr support. But you can just click on the buttons as many times as you want, then check your contributions.

Ahh, I was worried he was going to be doing a 'limited edition' or some such.

Don't laugh at the Idea... Hero Games did EXACTLY that with the limited Champions Hardcover... when they released the softcover (and stopped selling the hardcover) we discovered that they had left out a TON of information from the original edition, as well as flavor and artwork.

Awesome. Martel/Hammer rocks!
Glad the campaign is doing so well.
Maybe well see some Selenoth rpg material in the future as well.

That won't happen. If anything, we'll go in the other direction and add more.

Thanks VD and JeremiahEmbs! LOL, guess im gonna need that wiki. One thing I would like to suggest about the wiki is to be careful not to reveal too much before the stories get going. I would much rather learn the extent of powers, family life, how well their community supports them, origins, etc, while it unfolds in the story.

Depends on who you think it is.

Blogger Unknown October 23, 2017 10:55 AM

Vox...I've already mentioned this to Jon, but I'm going to chime in on the forum. One's described as an add-on, the other not so much so. I've already chipped in for Rebel. What's the story for the RPG? Will/Can there be an add-on for the RPG for those who contributed already and want the RPG (as well as the other...$25? Cheap, really)?

I'm learning about this stuff as I go along, as I have not read comics since age 13. I do consider this alt*Hero Comics to be top importance in the culture wars, especially for reaching young people.

It will reach a lot more than young people though, and the effects will be felt soon.
