It's the next stage in Comic Book Evolution.

SPERG MODE ON!

The actual answer to this is probably thumbs that have as much nervous "wiring" as index fingers.

So, we already got the LOLs and the rage from SJWs. What was stage 3 again? And is it happening yet, or is the meteoric success of this project throwing a spanner into the works?

Thank you for the opportunity to help out with this project. I've had a great intuitive sense about this Alt*Hero Comics project from the beginning.

"Is this the next stage in human devolution?"

FTFY. YW.

And yes. If the subject of the question is both successive and entirely human, the answer is always yes.

But then we wouldn't be as hot anymore?

Not to be sarcastic here, but what percentage of comic book readers are female? And do White males that still read comic books enjoy reading about female super heroes? I read comic in the age of Kirby, Romita, Ditka, the Buscemas, Neil Adams, Sterenko, etc. This was when men were men and women were sex objects. Pretty much, the only female heroes function was to display incredible bodies in a spandex-like costume. I don't think anybody ever complained.

Male readers likely pick up 'current year' books for "Fan Service" aspect of spandex costumes. This is also likely the reason that female superheros are gradually evolving into really ugly pseudo men.

If you are a slate-gray SJW, you can't let any iota of fun or entertainment leak through the muck and drek you produce (not create).

Not too uncommonly in the over the top macho movies there will a be a great looking babe, but no overt sex scenes. I what I think is going on is that older boys who are not yet into sex are turned off by the love making stuff. So what they do is to keep the great looking babe around for the pleasure of the older crowd, but don't have explicit sex stuff to keep from turning off the younger generations.

That also accounts to some extent for the female action heroes. Visual entertainment from a women who often acts more like a man than a women. And now of course the SJW stuff mixed in.

I have it on good authority that grown white men will watch a show about magic ponies if it's well-made.

Yeah, but do men actually want to see a 110 lb. female, with no upper body strength and with only a few weeks of martial arts training so the scene can be choreographed, defeating 6 ft. 4, 230 pound pumped men? I guess its like professional wrestling, but it requires too much suspension of belief for me to buy into it. Is there a sizable amount of males that get a sexual buzz fantasizing about getting their ass kicked by some girl? Or is it just propaganda to program males and females to actually believe this can happen?

Yeah, there are also men that watch golf, baseball, and paint drying on TV. No accounting for taste. But, is it enough to recoup investments?

Slightly OT:

Paladin Press has announced they are closing for good. Not exactly SF/F fare, but some of their authors have interesting work. Might be worth checking out, Mr. Day.

"Not to be sarcastic here, but what percentage of comic book readers are female?"

Actual women or American fujoshi ("rotten/broken women")? Because part of the takeover of Marvel isn't just SJW infestation, but fujoshi madness as well (Iceman gay, masculinization of female characters, etc.)

Also, out of curiosity, what's the reason for the alt-history backstory?

To set it in a more interesting quad-polar world. It creates more interesting possibilities for conflict and storytelling.

This is actually one of my favourite parts of it. I know Vox can absolutely kill it since he thought of the idea in the first place. But I'm also curious, down the road, if Castalia brings in other writers, how they will handle it. I suspect it will provide a ton of freedom in storytelling.

I did notice that during the first couple hours of the campaign, when posts here were saying that the total was up to $14K, my view still said $0, so it's probably something to do with Freestartr.

No biggie... I just used the file names to view the fifth and sixth panel, so I'm good.

The only gender of females that I recognize is actual women. Or, actual girls that will eventually be actual women.

Blogger Cataline Sergius October 02, 2017 4:59 PM

ALt Hero has an taken interesting approach to the problem of introducing super powers.

That problem being how do these powers effect the course of human history.

DC and Marvel simply ignore the issue and pretend that the presence of omnicompetent demi-gods living among us doesn't change things all that much.

I suppose if the powers in question were more tactical than strategic they might be right. A Captain America would be the greatest special forces operator of all time but Special Ops aren't going to win you a war.

On the other hand a hero that was powerful enough to interdict inbound Soviet warheads might have ended the Cold War forty years earlier.

Alan Moore addressed the problem directly if clumsily in the Watchmen. Creating an alternate history. Albeit one that reflected both his politics and prejudices.

Larry Corriea did the same thing in his Hard Magic series. Although he did a much better job of it.

Starting from scratch in a place called Now, creates an intriguing frission in a world that acknowledges 4th generation warfare.

I'm very much looking forward to Alt Hero.

If there's that much money in OOTS you'd think Burlew would fricking hire somebody to draw the comic for him. As it is, the story arc looks like it will be finished in about 2021.

If Vox is the writer the one thing you can guarantee is villains with depth and empathy. If the dude even ends up BEING a villain.

Stage 3 is folks wondering why Vox needs so much money for a product that will not be mass printed. The only physical copies will go to a few hundred pledgers.

Stage 4 is donors asking Vox exactly when they will receive their product.

Blogger James Dixon October 03, 2017 1:44 PM

How much money do you think artists, colors, inkers, and printers want for six complete comic books?

> Stage 4 is donors asking Vox exactly when they will receive their product.

When it's ready. We already know that. I fit's not ready by Christmas of next year, you might have a point. Anytime in the next year or so is fine.

Anonymous Vox Diabolus October 03, 2017 2:34 PM

@50 "How much money do you think artists, colors, inkers, and printers want for six complete comic books?"

Full color art with lettering will not run Vox less than $125.00 per page (although the guy who drew the "Rebel"art will probably work for a ham sandwich). Vox has indicated that the only confirmed print edition, with issues 1-3 (144 pages) will be printed through a POD digital printer, and the cost with shipping will be $13.17 per unit to each customer. The hardcovers will be a little pricier, about $18.11. Counting the number of pledgers who are owed books as of right now, the printing and shipping costs of the books will be $8555.00, and artists costs for six books (which he is now on the hook for, thanks to stretch goals) should at minimum be $36,000.

500 units of the Rebel figurine will cost about $5200.00 to produce.

49 T-shirts will run about $735.00

Add that all up and Vox’s costs right now are $50,490

Currently the pledge drive has raised $62,195. Freestartr gets 15% off the top, and of what remains, another 10% minimum will go to taxes.

Do the math.

Anonymous CPEG October 03, 2017 4:01 PM

That puts him pretty close to breaking even, and that's before the print edition is offered for sale to the general public.

Well, that's the point. This comic is never going to be sold in shops.Vox confirmed that here:
http://voxday.blogspot.com/2017/10/she-mad.html

Blogger Jimmy The Freak October 03, 2017 4:10 PM

@53 Are you purposely being dense? There is a big difference between not being offered for sale in the local comic book shop and not being offered for sale to the general public.

Anonymous Vox Diabolus October 03, 2017 4:39 PM

@54 And where will the general public be purchasing the print edition of said product if not in stores?

Also, as a POD product, Vox will be making minuscule profits on each item sold, especially since most of the interested purchasers will already acquired the book through the pledge drive.

Anonymous CPEG October 03, 2017 4:56 PM

@55
.......
Um, Vox's entire publishing business model so far is, to my knowledge, entirely without the use of traditional bookstores.
More Diabolus, less Simplicio.

Anonymous Vox Diabolus October 03, 2017 5:07 PM

@55 Keep in mind that if he is not selling these books in shops with some sort of graphic novel section, his options are limited. Where can you even buy his books?

Anonymous Vox Diabolus October 03, 2017 5:10 PM

@55 Also, color books are MUCH more expensive to produce, unit by unit, than books with black and white text,

Anonymous CPEG October 03, 2017 5:12 PM

Probably from castaliahouse.com or amazon.com just like everything else he publishes.
