Who is that masked man?

Thanks to the fourth Hero backer, the Alt★Hero campaign is now rapidly approaching the landmark $100k level that less than one percent of all kickstarted campaigns ever reach. We still have nearly three weeks to go and there has been no media coverage of this beyond a single hit piece on a minor gay web site.

In the meantime, someone had better tell Jon Del Arroz to get cracking. He's now got TWO novels to co-write. And as for the masked man, are we not reliably informed that Diversity Heroes are de rigueur now? This is Diego Red Crow, also known as Ghostdancer, not to be confused with the failed Ghost Dancer of Marvel Comics. Needless to say, he is NOT on board with the Singapore Superhuman Treaty or the United Nations Superhuman Protection Council.

Well, that's quite the showing! I really do believe the freestartr is going to hit the 150k mark before it's done now; a video would really get the REEEEEEs flowing.

A side question, if I may - I sent you an email yesterday. I know you've been busy with the release of SJWADD, but might I ask if it's been read and not lost somewhere in the spam trap?

Have you run the numbers on the possibility to do a $25 "Digital Library" support level for the 9 eComics and 2 eBooks? The $15 tier looks like its very popular based on random refreshes of the Freestartr page.

Color, not high gloss. Neither Mr. Dixon nor I like pages that feel like magazines. The 70-pound standard color is 85 percent as pretty and feels much nicer to read.

This is a comics project run by writers, not artists. The art is important, but it will not drive everything.

I know that Alt-Hero is against such a thing, but if you're ever looking for a token negro, the "who bitch this is" gamer would be the perfect template.
Of course, I am not serious. I wouldn't actually try to tell any artist what they need to produce. I just thought it was a funny concept.

Honestly I have never really followed comic books and don't intend to start, but I wish you all the best in this endeavour.

One thing I have seen time and time again in various fields - and at least once on the topic of comic books - has been that whenever someone points out the leftist takeover as a causal factor in the field's decline, the leftists retreat into claiming that the field has been in decline for a long time anyway, or in any case would have declined for various unrelated reasons, leftist takeover or not. Any attempts to debate this point are generally destined to devolve into hair-splitting skirmishes over technicalities and obscure statistics; pointless and ineffective.

But the existence of a non-converged alternative clearly bucking the supposed inevitable, industry-wide trend blows up that leftist redoubt in one shot.

@35 VD

Probably replace a few smaller comic book companies. A top 50 book on the year, by sales numbers, will do around $500k USD in "retail" revenue. Much, much smaller to the publisher.

Was looking at the economics again. I'd really love to know the publisher's cut of retail revenue. 50%? 65%? 35%? Marvel's per-unit cost has to be kept really low for them to make anything off the volume of volumes they send out. Explains they "pay them just enough for rent" turn they've made.

How to actually number the sales is a little wonky. But if we just take 1000 per volume (of 9 volumes now) as assured sales, that'll push all of them into the top 1000 books at launch. That's long before distribution sales. That's just pre-orders.

Time-Warner & Disney both view the comic book part of their Comic Properties with about as much respect as you would expect from companies with 10s of billion in revenue. A great, "eh? Cut your costs".

Marvel is trying to sell that garbage for $3.99 and $4.99/issue? I cut way back on my buying at $2.00/issue, then again when they went to to $2.25. I think the final straw was $2.50. They simply weren't worth buying at that price.

I like the design, red crow is also a good name.

To be completely honest, I did have a slight negative reaction to his first name, Diego. Especially since he is written to be both Lakota and Comanche. Diego is a name of spanish origin (alternative to James?). Given the geographic location of Lakota and Comanche tribes, the history, a french name might have been a better fit (Jacques for example). Spanish seems out of place. There are other considerations for why native north americans would not want to be linked to spanish naming, in part due to the shared dislike of Hispanics to the south presenting themselves as or being confused as Native North Americans.

Anyways, regarding the character being part Comanche... it reminded me of something Dr. David A. Yeagley (descendant of a Comanche warrior named Bad Eagle) said. Maybe this can help the writers in some way:

"America today is making the same mistake we Indians made nearly four centuries ago. America is letting in too many foreigners. And we Indians could end up losing this country all over again. It may come as surprise to many white people who have been brainwashed by the media to see Indians as the ultimate liberals, but there are few groups in America today who take a dimmer view of mass immigration than the American Indian.

The Comanches were one of the most intolerant of all Indian peoples. We had no use for anyone else, white, Mexican or Indian. When we came thundering down on the southwest plains, we took the land we wanted and ran everyone else off. We created the life we wanted, at the expense of other people. The white man did the same. Only he did it on a grander scale.

In many ways, Indians see the white man as a kind of adopted son -- naive, reckless and destructive, at times -- but nevertheless cut from the same warrior cloth as we were. We do not see black, Mexicans, Asians, Arabs and others in this light. These peoples may have their own virtues and traditions, but they have no history with us. They are strangers. If they want to rule us, they must conquer us the way the white man did -- on the battlefield, by force of arms. That is the only honorable way for a warrior.

The white man seems to have lost his spirit. We see that he is giving this country away to [illegal alien] others, and this fills our hearts with fear. For we are part of the land he is giving away ... The white man must regain his warrior soul and take back his land! In that fight, I will stand by his side and offer whatever strength I have to ensure his victory!"

That makes no sense. "The Comancheria (Comanche: Nʉmʉnʉʉ Sookobitʉ, 'Comanche land') is the name commonly given to the region of New Mexico, west Texas and nearby areas occupied by the Comanche before the 1860s." The Comanche came down from the north originally, but not from French-occupied territory.

Many Indians in the Southwest have Spanish-influenced names.

Alt history in the 20th century, dude, not 18th or 19th. A lot of Sioux live off of the res. They are still Sioux.

That is a horrible example. For what its worth I have family that are still on the Chumash reservation, I don't relate as much due to personally being only about 5% native, genetically. Having known both Chinese and natives (siberian americans), I have yet to see anyone of them give a "different" name to make it "easier" for english speakers, and I assume if it was done, it would be in English. =)

Paleosiberian people on the other side of the Bering Strait do the two names thing too. Although for them it's not so much to 'make it easier' as it is done for religious and tribalist reasons.
