You're not one of them

And also, you have to go back.
Hats, as Racked explored earlier this year, have historically signaled that the wearer is part of a team — and when is the desire to belong more acute than in middle school? Of course, teams don't exist without opponents, and for some to feel like they're on the inside, others need to be left out.

It was clear to one mother, who asked to remain anonymous, who fell into the latter category and who didn't when she picked her son up from his middle-school trip to DC: "Our school district has a good amount of minorities in it, but we were all stunned. Every single white kid besides maybe one or two walked off the bus with a red hat on," she said.

While she, her husband, and their children were all born in the United States, they are Muslim-American and not white, and the hats were just the most recent and most visible symbol of a racial divide that, she says, her son has seen escalate since November.

"I think 12-year-old boys use it as a form of bullying — identifying themselves as part of this group to the exclusion of others just for the fun of it. That's what it seemed like to me," she says. "Us over here with the red hats, and you over there… you're not even an individual anymore. Now you're just one of the brown kids and you're not one of us."
The God-Emperor's winning never ends. The Red Hats are the sans cullottes of the 21st century. Never forget that homogeneous nations are usually derived from heterogeneous empires.

You may not like these developments. You may think that they are cruel, racist, and wrong. And your opinion of that matters about as much as your opinion of a melon striking the pavement after being dropped from 100 meters high. Civic nationalism has observably failed. The melting pot was always a propagandistic lie. Human nature did not change when the Declaration of Independence was written, and in any event, it was not written for the 80 million post-1965 invaders of America.

This good news! The more that Fake Americans realize they don't belong here, feel isolated and feel uncomfortable, the higher chance they will just self deport if everyday life such as the hat choice of others becomes too triggering for them. I can't wait to see how this evolves. Here's hopping for a peaceful solution, even as it becomes increasingly unlikely.

Doesn't he want to be part of the in-crowd? As far as I can tell, no one was stopping the young man from buying a hat, so the fact that he didn't means that he self identifies as an outsider. Or that he self identifies with another group that would kick him out for having a MAGA hat. Or that Mom would kick him out for having a MAGA hat.

NOVA stands for Northern Virginia. In the three Fairfax County high schools near me in NOVA, white enrollment constitutes 20%, 18% and 24% of the student body, effectively. Black enrollment is about 10% in each, but in each case I'd say about half of those blacks are from Africa, not native born American blacks. So you're looking at about 30% native born American population in these schools. All the rest of the kids are from all parts of the globe. They boast enrollments from 85 or so, with kids who are native speakers of about 40 different languages.

It's a mess, a total mess. It takes them one week each year to practice the graduation ceremonies. The main point of that is to practice the pronunciation of each kid's name, because there are damn few John Smiths or Jane Bakers running around.

So what are the white kids who are left doing? They are banding together, naturally. And they are assaulted on all sides and from the faculties who do in fact single out their culture alone for condemnation. And, Boomers, listen up, we keep telling you this, they are PISSED. For what you've done to them even if you can't see it.

The melting pot was always a propagandistic lie.

It depends on the relative proportions of what's in the pot, and how the cook stirs it. Prior to 1960, we had forced assimilation because immigrants weren't treated with kid gloves and given special treatment; we also mostly admitted Europeans with similar values.

If we carefully select a small number of immigrants from the right countries, and stop encouraging balkanization we can have a functioning melting pot again. Whether we can return to common sense immigration policy is anyone's guess.

80 million not-Americans results in a net loss of 16 million jobs if the 1980 to 2015 stats can be reliably extrapolated back to 1965 (and that's giving those not-Americans credit for every job created in America since 1965). With respect to the (at least) .2 jobs lost per immigrant, economists who consider GDP a reliable measure of economic health tell us we'll make it up on volume.

Some anecdotal info for what it's worth. I return to NOVA, where I grew up, periodically to visit family and when I was there on Thanksgiving weekend of last year made a quick trip to the Potomac Mills outlet mall about 30 min. south of DC. The mall was very crowded as expected but it was literally a sea of short mestizo Central Americans. I'm aware of the demographic transformation of NOVA and have seen it but this experience left me shocked and sickened. Was back there this past August on a Sunday and while the mall crowd was much less the demographics were also much more like what I remembered from my more frequent trips 20 years ago: maybe 40% white, 40% black, 20% Asian/Latino. Maybe it was just a good day.

Islamists are not on the verge of seizing power in any advanced Western democracy or even winning significant political influence at the polls."

"Anti-Semitic and xenophobic movements did not disappear from Europe after the liberation of Auschwitz, just as white supremacist groups have lurked beneath the surface of American politics ever since the Emancipation Proclamation. economists who consider GDP a reliable measure of economic health

What is your definition of "economic health" and what do you consider a reliable measure of it?

From the way things are, it seems clear that the so called experts are measuring things in the wrong way, since traditional models can no longer be used to predict the future. Millions of economists in the world, and very few of them predicted the 2008 crash. Millions of political scientist in the world, and almost none of them could predict Trumps presidency, etc.

America was built on the backs of innovative individualists, not on the backs of group-think collectivists. One problem is the growing leftist imperative that one identifies with a group first and and as an individual second. That is completely backwards.

Remember when it was taught as virtuous to be singularly different than anyone else on the planet? That that is what made the potential possibilities for each individual so vast?

That the first thought that popped into this woman's head was the idea that people wearing red hats are trying to be exclusionary oppressors is demonstrative. They are the ones forcing the issue of choosing sides to such an immediate necessity.

So be it.

Then it all changed in '91 when they started bussing in the underprivileged (i.e. black) kids from across the county. Everyone I know who still lives there says Woodbridge and Dale City are shitholes now.

I think our (Millenials) biggest problem as a whole is that we're just too soft. (Unfortunately, and unsurprisingly of course, taking a quick look at the ones from my graduating class, those that are in college now are getting even worse in general.)

I agree very much, I too wish our generation stood with our heads raised a little higher. But it is comforting to see those coming after us appear to be made of tougher stuff. They call Woodbridge Hoodbridge now, which is kind of a misnomer because it sounds like blacks have taken over. But the Central Americans and their gangs are actually what they mean in this case.

Prince William County is trying to build a new high school near there, to serve a new upscale community going in near it. A friend of mine is a school district admin, she told me getting approval from the feds was insane. Never mind that pesky US Constitution and the bit about education not being a federal matter and all. No, the feds kept rejecting over and over because they feared it would become too white.

My friend is a diehard lib from way back. But this got her started thinking, because she's white. And the federal planners' open and aggressive hostility to her began to open her eyes.

James, I shouldn't have to read all the way down to posting #50 to figure out what some obscure term used by some person used in post #17, because #17 just assumes that THE ENTIRE FREAKING WORLD is familiar with local slang-terms for place names.

Seriously, refering to Ozerki in Saint Petersburg, Russia, is less obscure, because at least if you google for Ozerki, you'll be directed to a particular pair of ponds (pond = ozer in Russian) in a park in St. P.... whereas if I google for NOVA...... Covering your hair is a political statement, and has zero, I repeat, zero to do with religion. Yes the number of exceptions is certainly beginning to grow, as far as I can tell at least the majority are still either milling about with their heads in the sand or are adamantly on the left. And while i don't know about anyone else's view on the matter, I personally have never cared for the company of our generation much at any point, even before I became a more entrenched member of the Right and started paying attention to these things, I've always gotten along best with those older and younger than us. I've seen in past threads that some GenX commenters have drawn quite a few similarities between Millenials and Boomers and, speaking as a Millenial, I'm inclined to agree with them. It would at least explain to a certain extent why I dislike both groups in general.

"Should I start dropping military terms that are obscure even to most military personnel into threads on here...because *I* know them, you should, too?"

Bring it. I love a challenge.

More POTUS red hats!! MAGA Also make oneself better.

Our elderly liberal women stopped using the red hat society dress up (its not cosplay when your 70) now they chose purple so I walked in w/ my POTUS Trump hate the red hat pinned on my bag, played Milo, horrified them, know they are in solidarity with...pink for breast cancer.

73 its wonderful islam and SJWs out themselves like hollywood, its all wonderful to identify evil filth. But really it would so much fun for EVERYONE to buy a baby piglet and walk it around in your purse or carriage, islam would shriek at the subtle insult. Next, lawfakers would try to ban miniature adorable piglets b/c it might offend someone, then let the dogs loose hopefully not harming women and children but who cares, God can sort it out as they'd probably grow up to be monsters, I mean of the peaceful religion honoring the killing non islamics and other low iq acts of juvenile delinquency that gets people killed.

No run, no hide, no cry, heli ride time.

Covering your hair is a political statement, and has zero, I repeat, zero to do with religion.

What about Christian women who cover their heads as the Apostles taught, and as western women embraced, until the era of degeneracy began?

The local Italian-Americans value their Italian Heritage at least on par with their being Americans. In other words, they haven't assimilated.

These are the words of someone with no clear ethnic heritage. Or a civic nationalist.

I’m an American who is also a 6th generation German import with pure German blood at least to the 1600s. I’m fiercely proud of it, and my town’s German festival is the biggest holiday of the year. (I do not LARP as a Nazi however, that is gay.) Number 1 on the wife material checklist is that she’s German.

I guess I still haven’t assimilated. But I would rather identify with my purebred German ancestors than with the 50% of my “fellow Americans” who are non-European.

Assimilation is a civic nationalist dream. (Or should I say, fantasy.)

I am puzzled by women who wear a hijab and visible makeup at the same time. Isn't there a contradiction between the two? The ostensible reason for the hijab is modesty and not wanting to be a sex object, according to what I have read, seen and heard on TV (from the mouths of hijab-clad women: were they lying? were they themselves misinformed about the reasons for wearing hijab?). Soooo, if you don't want to be a sex object, why are you wearing makeup?

I also see a lot of young women wearing both a hijab and tight, sexy clothes. I experience a cognitive dissonance when I see this.

This leads me to believe that for a number of Muslim women, the hijab is not a religious piece of clothing but an identity badge.

"Islamists are not on the verge of seizing power in any advanced Western democracy or even winning significant political influence at the polls"

I know liberals can be dumb, but even I am surprised to hear they've never heard of London.

Truthfully I thought Dirk was joking on that first pass, but now I see I was mistaken.

This is what causes word vomit on the part of lesser writers who give too many f***s. No one is willing to understand, so the over explaining begins. There isn’t enough dressing to season the word salads, and very few accept that lettuce actually does have a flavor all it’s own.

Of course the melting pot observably exists. The Founding Fathers enabled the people to change the rules how they fit in light of our hodge podge collection of deplorables. They would never go back. The MAGA hats are worn by adolescent boys as a mere status symbol--it's just cool. The normies know better...

An American would say 100 yards...

@60: may I suggest a Montreal Canadiens hat? Mostly red except for the Canadien's logo on the front.

Interesting point is that the Candiens are informally known as the "habs", which is short for the French word "habitant", which, in English, means "inhabitant". Which is not a bad underlying message to pass along.

I was a Habs fan before the Winnipeg Jets ever existed.

@144: Actually, NOVA was obvious to me. I mean, NOLA is New Orleans Louisiana, so NOVA would clearly be New Orleans, Virginia.

Come one guys, seriously. I do some technical writing as part of my job. One of the key rules is that while you can (and probably should) use acronyms and abbreviations, the first time you use one in a document, you should define it right there. That's good style and, for a comment posted on a widely read blog such as this, good manners.

Blogger Akulkis October 14, 2017 11:56 AM

@Marvin Boggs

EXACTLY!

I know right? I had to read further before it was clear that they were talking about maga hats. And what prevents the boy from wearing one? Does he not want to maga? If not why not? (Assuming of course that the story is real, kind of a stretch)

Blogger Phat Repat October 14, 2017 4:16 PM

Good God Dirk Manly, you're going to give yourself a coronary. But yes, I shall spell out acronyms as the center of the Universe is not the USA (well, okay, it is, but just for you I'll pretend it isn't). ;-D

Anonymous Wingnut McGuffin October 14, 2017 4:21 PM

So the Hammer and Sickle mob is upset their kids and grandkids are wearing MAGA hats? Oh the irony!

Hahahahahahahahaha!

I shall spell out acronyms as the center of the Universe is not the United States of America (USA) .

Fixed it for Dirk.

Blogger James Dixon October 15, 2017 3:32 PM

I'm not the one who used the term, Dirk, and I did define it for you. Next time I won't bother.

Blogger James Dixon October 15, 2017 3:37 PM

Habitant is accepted English too.

Reminds of one of my favorite widely applicable bromides: Whether the rock hits the melon or the melon hits the rock, it's still bad news for the melon.
