A lesson in corporate chaos

This is a fascinating clash of two tech CEOs on Twitter, both of whom are quite clearly unready for prime time and are perfectly willing to blow up their own enterprises in defense of their ideologies.
Vinay Gupta‏ @leashless
I don't deny your right to do what you want with your own tools in your own time. But I'm telling you this, and I am not to be fucked with: most of us will not rest until we figure out how to fuck you if you colonize our platform. We are hostile to your goals. Be elsewhere.

Vinay Gupta‏ @leashless
If you try to twist our work into a weapon for your cultural war, it will damage our attempt to transform the global economy. You will be in our way, and we will fuck you. We are smart: in all probability it can be done without platform changes. Get your own toys. Get off ours.

Vinay Gupta‏ @leashless
Go and build your own infrastructure, you dumb motherfuckers.

You want to parasitize our hard work with your massively bigoted political project, and you expect us to just roll over?

Don't be fucking stupid. We have backbone. We have will. We will fight back. Lots of Jews too.

Vinay Gupta‏ @leashless
We did this work, on Ethereum, to make a better world. If you force us to figure out how to defend our vision of a better world against people who try and use our own tools against is, we will find ways to fight back.

And we are the ones with the power here. Make your plans.

Vinay Gupta‏ @leashless
By all means, put your entire life's work into the hands of people who hate a d oppose you at every level. You'll find it goes as well as running a city when the power station staff go on strike. We do infrastructure. You depend on us.

We will find ways. Count on it.

Gab @getongab
Well folks this is how “open,” “decentralized,” and “inclusive” the Ethereum project is. If you’re thinking about building on top of it, think again.

Vinay Gupta‏ @leashless
I am proud that this has gone viral. I did not work on cryptography to empower racists, but normal, good people.

Ivan Throne‏ @DarkTriadMan
Why, it is almost as if @voxday had a point about from-the-ground-up vulnerabilities once, isn't it?
At this point, I think one can make a very good case about social media potentially doing more harm than good for the average company. I wasn't interested in using Etherium, but after seeing how these literal communists intend to use it to transform the global economy, I'll go out of my way to support their competitors.

You have to be pretty stupid to go on Gab and volunteer yourself for the targeted harassment and libel that will be directed your way in the name of free speech. And you'd have to be an utter moron to even consider putting your livelihood in the hands of the out-of-control SJWs at Etherium. Both Gab and Etherium observably fail to grasp that providing confidence to the consumer is the single most important factor in corporate success.

Ya know... the way the system works... you really don't make much money or accumulate any power until you're over 40. And that's just when it all starts. That's frustrating for young people.

The interaction of these CEOs demonstrates the utility and wisdom of that system.

Correct. The only uncertainty in the mind of a customer should be delivery time and price.

I recommended your "The Irrational Atheist" to someone on Gab who wanted to know the number of people killed in religious wars. With Gab, at least you can go on anonymously and speak freely without worrying that you'll suddenly be axed like on Twitter. And apparently they just did everyone a public service by exposing Ethereum.

I'm surprised you left out the part with Vijay mocking white people and screaming how indians are the superior race.

While musing about how the coming decline and fall will play out, I've wondered the how & what of our times that would parallel the ~1300 year long loss of the "secret" to making concrete that followed the collapse of the Western Roman Empire.

People are so besotted with self-satisfaction, wallowing in ignorance about the source(s) of the cornucopia that surrounds us and saturates our existence, that almost no one can imagine that this condition is ephemeral.

We stand on the apex of a vast pyramid of interrelated, voluntary, spontaneous transactions, each product existing at the end of a long chain of exchanges in a structure of production we can't even begin to grasp. (Read Leonard Reed's "I, Pencil" for a hint of the complexity involved, given that it refers to a stupid little #2 pencil, not a cell phone, an electric transformer, or the screen on which you read this.)

The spontaneous organization of all of those innumerable links in the chain of production rest on tacit cooperation, which rose to a level never before seen in the History of Mankind. We use, watch and wear products that exist due to cooperation between people who not only exist in different nations, who not only speak different languages, whose cultures are all but immiscible, but also who don't even like each other all that much.

This exchange (and the OP titled "Problem or Opportunity") illustrate how we're sailing into an environment where people WILL NOT COOPERATE any more.

Now I know how the individual items populating our Plenitude will wink out of existence. The weakest link in each item's chain of production, where people will stop cooperating in some tiny subset of the market underlying that item's layered production structure, will break.

We stand on the precipice of reversal; the last 20, 50, 150 and perhaps 500 years of "more, faster, better, cheaper...," of each new year bringing with it a bounty of never-before-available goodies, doodads and trinkets, is about to invert.

The uptrend was built on growing trust and cooperation. The downtrend will be characterized by distrust and rage. No, we cannot all just get along.

It's not just okay to be white. It's positively wonderful.

Blogger Student in Blue November 15, 2017 8:32 AM

'If you can't measure it, it doesn't exist!'

That seems to be the prevailing thought amongst dumb business critters and always has been. How does one measure customer confidence? How does one gauge how a stinker of a product impacts public perception? Their method is to not think about it and look at pretty numbers instead.

Blogger Arthur Isaac November 15, 2017 8:32 AM

Libertarians have a decent argument in favor of allowing monopolies. Unless they have state sanction or some absolute advantage such as physical control, monopolies are strongly disciplined by the market. They can only survive in a market by crushing the seed of competition before it begins, because the profits aren't high enough and there's no need to worry about obtaining service/product. The moment a monopoly abuses its position or considers raising its price, the potential for instability becomes a concrete idea and competitors begin to form.

Blogger WynnLloyd November 15, 2017 8:44 AM

"My people are racially superior to whites and always have been. We have always known that."

"There is no irony in this. We've always been superior to the whites. So have the Jews. Whits are late to the civilization game."

Blogger WynnLloyd November 15, 2017 8:49 AM

He should be told that. By a hundred thousand different people. No one is more obnoxious than Hindus. They have all the qualities attributed to Jews, but have totally undesirable women, a retarded religion, and an inferiority complex that dominates everything they do, which you can see in ranting of this pissy Brahman.

Not sure your context here is anything more complex than "white trust" but your post is definitely interesting, if not enlightening in reminding us of the complex web of dependence on which our society depends to keep operating.

I just finished reading "The Old Man and the Wasteland" where for over 40 years after a nuclear holocaust people were left to scavenging, not rebuilding anything, sort of like Mad Max in a way.

Rebuilding or just maintaining any semblance of a society depends on trust relationships or it all falls apart. This is evident even in this community that has built up around Vox's entrepreneurial efforts. The more we trust each other (not agree but trust in the veracity of our peers) the stronger the community grows and the more it can accomplish.

I believe the success Alt*Hero was in a large part due to the trust in Vox that he will do what he said he would do, come hell or high water.

It makes me wonder how much of it is midwittery, and how much of it is living completely removed from their customers.

Take the video games industry for example. So many developers wind up being too busy to actually play a bunch of related games, and the business people themselves just want to do business instead of understand their product. So you get completely tone-deaf megacorps that wind up capitalizing on the lowest common denominator.

I'm just waiting for another video game crash.

The recent Hannity Kuerig kerfuffle shows that - on both sides.

The problem with social media is one of the big reasons it is useful is for news and politics and even philosophical discussions. But in the era of SJWs and identity politics you are going to offend half the country. And won't capture the other half.

Yeah. It is almost as if the Free Speech at VP just naturally occurs in an open environment of frewheeling Free Speech ideologues!

I've thought social media was toxic for at least a decade. I remember seeing people navel gazing on one of Live Journal and realizing that the trend would not end well. But someone, somewhere should have taught Gupta that a) you should not air out business grievances on social media, and b) if you're telling me that you're going to fuck me, you're not doing it, so I can disregard the strutting.

@12 People are so besotted with self-satisfaction, wallowing in ignorance about the source(s) of the cornucopia that surrounds us and saturates our existence, that almost no one can imagine that this condition is ephemeral.

While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. (1 Thess 5:3)

Anonymous Philalethes November 15, 2017 11:52 AM

@35: His mother was a white.

And his father, especially if high-caste, was part white. Recent genetic research (Steve Sailer: " Ancient India Really Was Invaded by Aryans "; the linked article is detailed and interesting) appears to be confirming the traditional idea (built upon Sir William Jones' 1786 discovery that Sanskrit was related to Classical Greek and Latin) that India was invaded by Sanskrit-speaking Aryans (cousins to the Indo-European ancestors of the vast majority of Europe's present population) ca. 2000 BCE – and it has been found that the invaders were mostly male (whose Y-chromosomes are prominent in the North Indian population today). See Rollo Tomassi on "War Brides".

In recent years this theory has been under attack as "cultural imperialism" from Indian chauvinists (such as Gupta, who ironically is likely more than 1/2 Aryan himself) who claim that the Aryan (Sanskrit for "Noble") people came from India and settled Europe – and that thus by implication we Europeans are "inferior" to Indians. Their arguments have seemed to consist mostly of third-world passion, without much factual support – as the linked article elucidates.

Thus, for instance, it is my view that the Buddha was more than half "white", as he was a member of the ruling class in northernmost India (Himalayan foothills) only about 1000 years after the Aryan invasion. Contrary to the assertion of one SJ-infected Buddhist blogger, who posted a note claiming that "The Buddha was Black", with a photo of a very dark (well, black) South Indian (Dravidian, the pre-Aryan population, who're still the majority in the southern third of the subcontinent). Traditional accounts (mostly hagiography, but certainly could have had some factual basis) of the Buddha's appearance describe his complexion as "golden". And the philosophy he presented, if you dig down through all the Asian accretion, was very clear, precise, and similar to the thought of his Greek contemporaries.

How do you make the star in Alt Hero?

I googled it, and the alt code it recommended made a spade. The other one did too. (Alt+9733 and Alt+9734). Google is lying.

I want to tell people about Alt*Hero, but I don't know how to make the star. Makes me feel like an idiot.

I mean, moreso.

Being in tech, I've worked with a lot of Indians. As one particular company I noticed them all speaking the same language -- which in India means they were all from the same general location.

Yeah that doesn't work here either. I think it's something to do with extended Unicode and how most fonts don't have them, but that's just a ballpark guess.

@94, nope. Holding down ALT plus pressing SHIFT to get the & and #, and letting go of SHIFT to the the 8902 doesn't work, either.

What's cool though is typing Alt★Hero is a game of sorts. Apparently, copy and paste is how you win.

There may be other ways to type it. Speedruns, that sort of thing, if you're into that. But even typing the name of the comic is a challenge. Hey, I'm up to it.

Okay, so the only real method (besides cheating via copy-pasting) is to actually do the Unicode entry. I can personally verify the Word method works, but I'm on a work computer and can't quite test out the registry method (even though I want to).

Blogger Student in Blue November 15, 2017 2:11 PM

Oh, forgot to mention, the Unicode entry is 2605.

Anonymous Wooly November 15, 2017 2:17 PM

Was it a good idea when Prince turned his name into an untypeable symbol? Financially speaking, of course.

Was that a good move?

Blogger R Beisert November 15, 2017 2:27 PM

Okay, after some research I've got some answers about the mysterious U+2065 (&#9733) for Alt★Hero.

First, basic Alt-codes only go to 255 on Windows machines. They've encoded some basic symbols, but not the full range. The reason you're likely getting the Black Club ♣ character is that (9733 mod 256 = 5, the Alt-code for ♣).

Second, while in Microsoft Word you can input the hexadecimal code and hit ALT-x, this is program-specific and won't work anywhere else. I suppose you can type what you want in Word, then copy-paste it here, but that's some nonsense.

Third, Windows doesn't accept hexadecimal code input by default - you need a registry entry enabled to accomplish it. That's ridiculous.

---

Looks like it's Copy-Paste from the freestartr page, for me!

Blogger R Beisert November 15, 2017 2:28 PM

Correction: Unicode U+2605. My bad.

Blogger Student in Blue November 15, 2017 2:32 PM

Correction, I was mistaken. I shall now reveal a bit of sperginess as I regurgitate what I learned from here.

So, Unicode is in hexadecimal notation. Thus, entry 2605 when converted to decimal is... 9733. The "Alt Code" that people talk about is generally just holding down alt and typing the decimal representation of the Unicode.

That said, most fonts just don't go up as high as 9733. This part is estimation on my part, but it appears to simply wrap around from the beginning again when you input a number too high for that particular character map.

That said, I tried changing the font in the web browser itself to a font with a larger unicode footprint, but it was still intercepting 9733 and wrapping it around to the ♣ (which is just alt+5). Perhaps something in the OS is intercepting the input.

Blogger Student in Blue November 15, 2017 2:34 PM

Beaten to the punch, huh. Good to know that it's only 255 max though.

Anonymous Wooly November 15, 2017 2:39 PM

If we're limited to 255, then why is ALT+0153 the trademark symbol? (and that one produces a different character than just 153.)

0153™
153Ö

I don't get it. The star has to be in there somewhere.

Anonymous Philalethes November 15, 2017 2:51 PM

On a Mac, just go to the Edit menu and select "Emoji & Symbols", then "Bullets/Stars" on the left; it's in the list: ★ (and seems to be present in many fonts); thus: Alt★Hero. Or you can use the Unicode Hex Input keyboard (activate it from the Keyboard Preference Pane), hold down the option key and type U+2605: ★. Just did all this in Chrome.

Blogger Student in Blue November 15, 2017 2:52 PM

The "Alt+XYZ" (3 numbers) draws off code page 437, while "Alt+0XYZ" draws off of code page 1252.

Microsoft apparently did weird and funky things when all of these different fonts and character encoding stuff was being developed in order to keep as much backwards compatability as possible.

Yep. It gutted Warner Brother's contractual claim to have copyrights to his birth name.

Blogger Student in Blue November 15, 2017 2:59 PM

I think I've changed my answer 3-4 times as to why this is happening. Kind of embarassing, really, but I've learned quite a bit as to the "how" and "why".

Anonymous Philalethes November 15, 2017 3:06 PM

Also on a Mac, once you have Alt★Hero, you can set up a an automatic text substitution in System Preferences> Keyboard> Text, so that when you type some unusual string (such as alt^hero), you get: Alt★Hero. This doesn't work in Chrome, though it does in Safari and TextEdit: maybe only in Apple apps? I usually compose posts in TextEdit first, so it'd work for me.

Blogger James Dixon November 15, 2017 3:25 PM

I'm very pro crypto, however "cryptocurrency" does not describe any single product or even category of products. There are literally hundreds of different types, some relevant and some not. The crypto community is also very fickle, gains or losses measured in double digit percentages per day are common.

So you go ahead buddy. Burn down your 30 billion dollar business over vapid virtue signalling while literally hundreds of competitors wait on the sidelines. Something that is currently a shitcoin can easily become a bitcoin in a few years so go ahead. Move out of the way and let your replacements in Ethereum is one of the most redundant ones anyways.

@getongab is not a CEO. It's a twitter handle.

Vinay Gupta is not a CEO of a Blockchain. There is no CEO. At most, Vinay Gupta at one time was on the 2015 Ethereum foundation board as one who helped release Ethereum. He's a very smart man but has his hands in lots of projects. His twitter handle is inaccurate IMO. Even his LindedIn profile is completely devoid of Ethereum information. His real passion is partially in disaster relief.

Blockchains don't give a rats behind about public meltdowns. It doesn't care. There were so many meltdowns and bad actors before Bitcoin reached $1000. There will be more.

I have immense respect for Vinay but this was a terrible no good bad bad meltdown. He let the trolls get into mind and under his skin. I've been reading and listening to him for quite some time and he's a great talker and decent debater. I've never seen him come unglued before.

People who want to use the internet continue to use the internet for its protocol and tech robustness despite all the spying and information collection. It's going to be no different tomorrow for Ethereum. Ethereum is not a company and anyone can build on it as they see fit.

Vinay is a non factor.

And yes...Vitalik Buterin with his Asberger's Syndrome needed to be checked on his horrible argument he made that was twisted and bent out of context. He should have picked some different words for an argument...but people with some Asbergers tend to pop off at the mouth in a way that feels offensive but they mean no offense. Poor choice of words....Look at his history on Reddit and Twitter...you really think Child Porn is something he's advocating based on the troll tweets with no context? LOL

Vitalik is DEFINITELY one of the brightest people in this century hands down. Vinay is a meltdown on a side stage. He's not even developing ANYTHING on Ethereum and hasn't for probably most of it's short 2 year existence.

Spend some time in the space and you'll realize what a non story this all will be. Crypto has amnesia every 24 hours. Guaranteed. I'm sure the transcontinental railroad and the dot.com bubble had its moments too.

It's a non story but a wild one to sit through for 24 hours!

cheers all.

If Gupta is smart, that is even more justification for shipping him back to India. Let him use his brains to build India instead of mooching off white civilization. His hatred of whites and identifying as Indian, not British, makes him a great example of why it isn't in the best interests of whites to import even the elite of other races. Gupta's tweets show why the H1b program should be ended in the US. When it was hard for non whites to immigrate to white countries, other races were more appreciative. Now they think we are chumps.

Blogger TM Lutas November 15, 2017 10:48 PM

@117 I know very well that Gupta is unlikely to have some technical method of subverting the currency or contracts built on the platform on a political basis.

It doesn't matter. All he needs to do is spout off and make wild claims to significantly dent the value of building a system off of ethereum if you're politically other than what he approves of.

His resume gives him credibility with the mainstream and if that's your market, you can't afford to play in the same sandbox. No matter how robust your technical solution is, he hurts your sales and marketing at his whim and he doesn't look stable enough to rely on to leave you alone.

So why not build on something else that hasn't yet popped up in price?
