Why I never seek investors

They're worse than a waste of time.
Hedge-fund billionaire Bob Mercer, a major Republican donor who supported Donald Trump, announced Thursday that he would be selling his stake in Breitbart News to his daughters; pulling his funding from Milo Inc., the controversial entertainment venture run by Milo Yiannopoulos; and relinquishing his co-C.E.O. title at Renaissance Technologies, where he oversaw more than $50 billion in assets, to take a non-management role.

In an open letter to investors, the 71-year-old strongly denounced the white nationalist movement that has come to be associated with several of his far-right political causes, tainting his reputation and putting Renaissance Technologies in the crosshairs of a divestment campaign. “Of the many mischaracterizations made of me by the press, the most repugnant to me, have been the intimations that I am a white supremacist or a member of some other noxious group,” he wrote. On the contrary, he said, “a society founded on the basis of the individual freedom that flourishes under a limited federal government has no place for discrimination . . . Discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, creed, or anything of that sort is abhorrent to me. But more than that, it is ignorant.”

Mercer also sought to distance himself from Steve Bannon, the former Trump adviser who issued his own half-hearted rebuke of Yiannopoulos last month in an attempt to shake off his reputation as a white-nationalist sympathizer. While Mercer said he respected Bannon, he clarified that, “I make my own decisions with respect to whom I support politically. Those decisions do not always align with Mr. Bannon’s.”
Fortunately for Robert Mercer, he's old enough that banking on being eaten last is probably a viable strategy for him. Not so much the kids and grandkids, but then, he is a Boomer, so what does he care? I'm not surprised that he pulled his funding from Milo, I'm merely surprised that such a successful man could produce such a remarkably stupid statement about the idea that a society founded on the basis of individual freedom can possibly survive WITHOUT discrimination.

I mean, kudos for recognizing that culture trumps politics. For a Republican, that's genuinely advanced thinking. But race and religion both trump culture.

SUCCESS COMES MOST SWIFTLY AND COMPLETELY NOT TO THE GREATEST OR PERHAPS EVEN TO THE ABLEST MEN, BUT TO THOSE WHOSE GIFTS ARE MOST COMPLETELY IN HARMONY WITH THE TASTE OF THEIR TIMES.

A belief in unlimited resources makes most people crazy.
Actually living a no-limits life (as a billionaire) works even better.

Possibly Trump is an exception, but just about every other super-rich man who opens his mouth sounds in no time like a babbling lunatic. Of course, such people have a vast amount of company these days.

@1 I do wonder, if my monomania is correct, how these billionaires (esp. the hedge-fund and VC types) will cope when it turns out that their billions are nothing but vapor. When your approach is so favored that success seems to rain on you, its rare to avoid becoming enamored with your own brilliance.

I hope "It's Raining Men" stops being rhetorical, at least near tall buildings and bridges.

@6 dc.sunsets

Renaissance Technologies is as much a leader in optical analysis as trading. People don't realize it's probably got the smartest collection of people working for them. But Robert also knows the nature of the "game", so he's playing it as well.

Some of the really rich guys do feel drink the cool-aid, but most of them, by that level of money, don't. This is why they roll their money into much harder assets. Farm & Water Rights have been a big thing for the last decade. And property in NZ & Australia. Funny, those bits.

Blogger kurt9 November 02, 2017 4:36 PM

Renaissance Technologies managed money from several public pension funds, which is why it was vulnerable to a divestment campaign on the part of liberals. This is the reason why Mercer pulled out of Breitbart News and Milo Inc.

"But race and religion both trump culture."

Religion? Not hardly. Religion is certainly downstream of culture, just as education is. The overwhelmingly cucked nature of Christianity in most of the Western nations attests to this.

A nationalist culture, like that of Poland and Hungary today, yields a nationalist church.

By contrast, a globohomojudaic culture yields a globohomojudaic church (or, if you prefer, a cultural-Marxist culture yields a cultural-Marxist church), which is the dominant form of Christianity today -- that which is here dubbed Churchianity.

Preaching to the choir much?

Blogger tuberman November 02, 2017 4:54 PM

Guys like Mercer, have a poor take on reality. I believe it comes from the conservative attitude of constantly worrying about and guarding their money. Also, they think they have a position in the scheme of things to protect, so even though "they're the boss," they still share many traits with hard-driven career drones. As John Boyd said, "There are doers, and people who want to climb the ladder." You cannot be both, if you want to climb the ladder, and that's what is important, good luck on doing anything worthwhile.

Anonymous karsten November 02, 2017 4:54 PM

I absolutely HATE to tell you this, but this blog sounds more & more like Hitler.

"If we pass all the causes of the German collapse in review, the ultimate and most decisive remains the failure to recognize the racial problem and especially the Jewish menace.

The defeats on the battlefield in August, 1918, would have been child's play to bear. They stood in no proportion to the victories of our people. It was not they that caused our downfall; no, it was brought about by that power which prepared these defeats by systematically over many decades robbing our people of the political and moral instincts and forces which alone make nations capable and hence worthy of existence.

All really significant symptoms of decay of the pre-War period can in the last analysis be reduced to racial causes.

Whether we consider questions of general justice or cankers of economic life, symptoms of cultural decline or processes of political degeneration, questions of faulty schooling or the bad influence exerted on grown-ups by the press, etc., everywhere and always it is fundamentally the disregard of the racial needs of our own people or failure to see a foreign racial menace.

And that is why all attempts at reform, all works for social relief and political exertions, all economic expansion and every apparent increase of intellectual knowledge were futile as far as their results were concerned. The nation, and the organism which enables and preserves its life on this earth, the state, did not grow inwardly healthier, but obviously languished more and more. All the illusory prosperity of the old Reich could not hide its inner weakness, and every attempt really to strengthen the Reich failed again and again, due to disregarding the most important question."

Anonymous Looking Glass November 02, 2017 5:23 PM

@23 Rashadjin

Churchianity is the result of a 300 year Socialist Religious War on the Church that no one bothered to notice was happening.

Religion trumps Culture, as it dictates a significant chunk of the assumptions. This is why when a culture changes religions, it changes radically. "Western Civilization" starts about 100 years after the Germans converted.

It's very puzzling. I don't understand how some of the guys in his cohort can't grasp the truths plainly laid out by VD and others, that conflict is inescapable at this point, and that their children and grandchildren are going to suffer for their hubris. Okay, I thought, in the present time, that religion and culture can move forward hand in hand, at the same time. But if people are alert, then religion trumps culture, in the sense that without a backbone of a real church, culture will not sustain.

These are intermixed though, as SJWism is a religion far more than a culture. So, SJWs use culture, or the undermining of Western culture to further their religious zeal. The SJWs though are a death cult, and have no culture except for nihilism.

So, saying culture trumps religion, one would have to prove that SJWs even have a civilization or a culture...THEY DO NOT.

They have a simple religious belief that everything is equal and interchangeable, including people.

I've never understood how a person could even hold such a ridiculously contradictory pair of ideas in their head at the same time. If you can't even decide who you want to live around, do business with, be beholden to, or spend your time with, exactly what kind of "free individual" are you? And how is a government "limited" if it can compel these most basic of individual choices?

while true, you have to remember that it was exactly these sorts of changes to the Law that Saint Abraham and the other Radical and Progressive Leftist Reeeeeeepublicans ( why did they Reeee? Slavery. just listen to any "conservative" today. they're still Reeee-ing about Slavery ) of 1860 demanded.

it was the Reeeeeeeeepublicans who demanded the unilateral abrogation of the Fugitive Slave Clause ( which is still in the Constitution and has been ratified by all 50 states, by the by ) and ran the treasonous Underground Railroad in flagrant violation of both the FSC and the subsequent Fugitive Slave Law.

it was the Reeeeeeeeepublicans who wrote the 14th Amendment ( which contains the Equal Protection clause which is the wedge used to demand that bakeries serve homosexual cakes ) which courts have interpreted to mean applies to private citizens.

it was the progressive Reeeeeeeeepublicans who enfranchised women.

it was the Reeeeeeeeeeeepublicans who passed the Prohibition Amendment, yet further limiting and constraining the freedom of the People and States ... when the whole purpose of the Constitution was to limit and constrain the Federal government, that Freedom might be conserved for the People.

oh, and it was the Reeeeeeeeepublicans who held a gun to the heads of all the Southern states and demand that they "ratify" all of the Reconstruction Amendments before they would be permitted to exercise their Rights as States again.

cuz, ya know, there's nothing like holding Free and Fair and completely voluntary votes after Leviathan has just murdered a half million of your men, raped your women, pillaged your cities and farms and is still holding a gun to your head.

the Reeeeeeeeeeeeepublican party was founded for the explicit purpose of annihilating the 9th and 10th Amendments.

don't be surprised that the entirety of modern US jurisprudence revolves around the Federal Government limiting and constraining the Freedoms of individuals.

they've been doing it for +150 years.

Volker was apparently a Christian but he certainly looks like a Jew. Maybe his parents converted.

@66 Jeff
Volcker was a Gentile squarehead. Possibly it's the other way around in this case: you see a likeness because a lot of Ashkenazim have German blood.

I can't even imagine what it must be like to live your life based on the fear that somebody might call you certain names. Yet it controls an entire generation.

Another op for Vox to do some mindless boomer bashing. Yes, Mercer is a boomer as are Bannon, Coulter, Sailer and Trump among others. Mercer is also a Jew who is in trouble with the IRS and has the left working to get institutions to bail on his hedge fund.

The Jews are not part of the white right's efforts because, even when their interests coincide, Jews will first think of what is good for Jews and they don't have the emotional attachment to being white that whites need to have. Jews are emotionally attached to being Jewish. So, it was quite amazing that Mercer would go against the elite of his tribe and fund Milo and Breitbart in the first place.

However, it is suicidal for the right, especially anything populist and nationalist, to depend on a limited set of funders because even if those funders are well intentioned because they are too vulnerable to the left.

Mercer is getting his affairs in order because of his impending legal troubles with Cambridge Analytica.

Shoe, singular.

An old guy sells up and Vanity Fair attempts to paint it as a shocked and revulsed repudiation of Bannon. "Distanced himself" by saying he respected him?

There may or may not be substance to the rest of the article, but it's worth noting the use of tone and implication to deceive. Every point made is twisted to the point of rejection on cognitive QA grounds.

Yes, we're getting our news here from the Vanity Fair version of the story. Good point.

God save us from these hedge fund libertarians.
