Skol Steelers... for the lolz.

Don't see Pittsburgh winning today, unless Haden somehow plays healthy.

But then again, the 3-week bye a steelers victory would secure might be ultimately disastrous.

Oh well, should be fun either way.

All year the Steelers were saying that they were saving James Harrison for later in the season. That could have only meant today's match-up. If so, then today, he has one job...

"All year the Steelers were saying that they were saving James Harrison for later in the season."

That's a good point.

Other years Harrison has been totally gassed by the time the Patriots were up to bat.

Aaron Rogers for the win

Anonymous patrick kelly December 17, 2017 11:52 AM

Yay, I get to watch muh Raiderz cuz they playing the local boys. Bet the NFL scheduling PTB thought this matchup would be better teams at this point in the season.

He says he's not back to ''save'' the Packers - which considering how they've fallen, it's doubtful he could anyway.

Eagles are in. If the Vikes beat the Bungles they're in too. If they lose, the Vikes should be ashamed of themselves, and worse, the Eagles clinch home field through the playoffs by beating the NY Dwarfs.
Steelers are in, home field by winning and JAX losing. JAX wins and they're in.

I remember that being a problem for (then ABC) MNF, they'd base the schedule on how teams did the previous season - so, teams that were (or close to being) in the playoffs would be featured. Dec rolls around and the game would be a 5-9 vs. 3-11 snoozer.

Anonymous The Original Arrogant Steelers Fan December 17, 2017 2:39 PM

"Dec rolls around and the game would be a 5-9 vs. 3-11 snoozer."

It's still a problem. CBS blocked NBC from moving Steelers vs Pats to SNF. Wasn't that the whole point of the ballyhooed Flex schedule?

Blogger YIH December 17, 2017 3:39 PM

Checking the current standings and scores, I spoke too soon last week. While slim, it is still possible for a Division by Zero Super Bowl.
The Bills and Ravens are still neck-and-neck for the last AFC playoff spot.

Blogger YIH December 17, 2017 4:51 PM

The Eagles had to put up a fight to beat the Giants!
And the Vikes are in. I'm guessing they pulled their starters in the 3rd. They both get the first round bye.
With both the Ravens and Bills being 8-6 now this becomes a 'must win' game for the Titans. The good news is they're playing the Niners - they need to take advantage of that.

The Patriots and the refs steal another one!

Anonymous The Original Arrogant Steelers Fan December 17, 2017 7:30 PM

I admit I don't know the rules on that one... but Jesse James clearly had control of the ball as it crossed the goal line so that's a touchdown? How could they possibly overturn that?

Blogger Billy December 17, 2017 7:33 PM

Damn Gronk, he's got to be the goat TE

Blogger emx1 December 17, 2017 7:47 PM

@steelers fan, if you're going to the ground as you catch it, you have to control the ball all the way down. It's a dumb rule, but it's consistent, part of the game now, and enforced consistently. All the players know it and have practiced with it in mind.

Anonymous Jack Hinson December 17, 2017 7:50 PM

Gronk, Brady, Belichick win again. Suck it bitches!

Anonymous The Original Arrogant Steelers Fan December 17, 2017 8:01 PM

"@steelers fan, if you're going to the ground as you catch it, you have to control the ball all the way down."

I would need to see the actual rule book on that one. If he secures control the ball which he did and crosses the goal line that should be a touchdown. The play should end once the ball crosses the goal line. If that touchdown was overturned by that logic then many many other touchdowns should have been overturned

Blogger Lazarus December 17, 2017 9:24 PM

If he was a runner, it would have counted.

Anonymous Weak December 17, 2017 9:30 PM

Funny how those close, bad calls never seem to go against New England. Goodell's team "wins" again.

Of all the reasons given for the NFL losing popularity, the leagues collusion with New England is never mentioned. Yet anecdotally, I know several people who are less interested in the league because of it.

"If he was a runner, it would have counted."

And that's actually in the rules?

Anonymous Carbon blob December 17, 2017 10:08 PM

https://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/2017-nfl-rulebook/

Article 7, Item 2.

"Item 2. Possession of a Loose Ball. To gain possession of a loose ball that has been caught, intercepted, or recovered, a player must have complete control of the ball and have both feet or any other part of his body, other than his hands, completely on the ground inbounds, and then maintain control of the ball long enough to clearly become a runner. A player has the ball long enough to become a runner when, after his second foot is on the ground, he is capable of avoiding or warding off impending contact of an opponent, tucking the ball away, turning up field, or taking additional steps. If the player loses the ball while simultaneously touching both feet or any other part of his body to the ground, there is no possession. This rule applies in the field of play and in the end zone."

James never possessed the ball, as it spun out of his hand and hit the ground as he fell.

Anonymous The Original Arrogant Steelers Fan December 17, 2017 10:12 PM

Name one.

Antonio Brown's stretcher to beat the Ravens. I'm pretty sure as the Ravens dragged him to the ground the ball touched the turf. Any lunge to the endzone could be interpreted as going to the ground.

Blogger Lazarus December 17, 2017 10:14 PM

The more important play was the Roethlisberger interception that doomed a field goal try.

And that was on him. They were told to "clock it" The route should not have been run.

New England somehow makes people make bad decisions, like in the Seattle superbowl fiasco.

Can't blame the refs for that.

Anonymous The Original Arrogant Steelers Fan December 17, 2017 10:16 PM

"James never possessed the ball, as it spun out of his hand and hit the ground as he fell."

I do not agree with that at all. By that rule that should have been a touchdown. James had control of the ball and made a football move and the ball broke the plane of the endzone. That play should have ended right there.

Brown takes 2 steps after landing with the ball, establishing possession.

James has only one foot on the ground when the ball first reaches his hands (0:40), is falling to the ground and the ball's clearly out (0:43) before he'd have been able to do anything that the rule requires.

Anonymous The Original Arrogant Steelers Fan December 17, 2017 10:41 PM

"James has only one foot on the ground when the ball first reaches his hands (0:40), is falling to the ground and the ball's clearly out (0:43) before he'd have been able to do anything that the rule requires."

The ball wasn't clearly out until he was at or very, very near the ground, but at that point he crossed the plane with possession. He not only tapped his feet once, but twice before the knee hit.

The key is that the football move with possession was made before he crossed the plane. The "making a football move" part in the rule is idiotic when it applies to the end zone because what football move would a player be making once he catches a ball in the end zone? A move to the locker room? The bench? Terrible rule.

And let's be serious, if the teams were reversed in that scenario which team would have gotten the call.......

Anonymous The Original Arrogant Steelers Fan December 17, 2017 10:54 PM

Oh yeah and the minor fact that the play was initially called a TD. Conclusive evidence? I mean come on, even you Steelers haters can't trump up that one.

More evidence that the NFL is indeed fixed. And that the Steelers may have been in on the fix is not out of sight or mind. How do you not double team Gronk? I mean, how? And the worst "clock play" in the history of football, down to and including pop-warner? And yet another slant play to the end zone in heavy secondary traffic???

Blogger Rough Carrigan December 17, 2017 10:55 PM

#24, because so many other NFL coaches are just not very bright they totally psyche themselves out when going up against Belichick. 90% of what gets thought of as brilliant coaching by Belichick is just drilling his guys to not make stupid mistakes.

Anonymous Carbon blob December 17, 2017 10:59 PM

@30

Seriously, this kills me. The Patriots can be beaten in a contest of strength, speed or skill, but coach after coach tries to outwit them and fails horribly.

Anonymous RJ December 17, 2017 11:08 PM

"Name one."

The Patriots receiver's catch against Houston. It was the exact same thing as the James catch, and it was reviewed and called a touchdown.

Fuck off, you New England cocksucker.

This one? Fair enough.

Didn't see the game, but 7:39 clearly looks like loss of control.

Anonymous Carbon blob December 17, 2017 11:57 PM

@34

Again, I didn't watch the game, so did the ref erroneously decide that the ground contact was irrelevant, or did they just miss the ball popping out? As the announcer notes, ground contact upon initial catch is always relevant to possession.

Blogger TontoBubbaGoldstein December 18, 2017 12:02 AM

I hate:
1) The Tuck Rule
2) The Loose Ball Possession/Completed Catch Rule [whatever you
call it.
3) The Fumble Through the Endzone = Touchback Rule

Anonymous WaterBoy December 18, 2017 12:20 AM

TontoBubbaGoldstein @36: "whatever you

The Calvin Johnson rule.

Anonymous JAG December 18, 2017 12:29 AM

Wow, Carr fumbles right before the pylon. Ball goes out of the side of the end zone. Touchback, and ball game Dallas. Both teams shot themselves in the foot repeatedly throughout the game. Guess the Raiders wanted to lose just a wee bit more than Dallas.

Also, both the Raiders and Cowboys started play in 1960. 57 years later the series between them is tied 7-7. Raiders vs Cowboys is the historic Super Bowl match up that should have happened in the 1970s. Somehow, the two teams have never met in the big dance.

Raiders vs Cowboys, and Steelers vs 49ers. The two historic dream match ups for a Super Bowl.

Anonymous JAG December 18, 2017 1:26 AM

Correction: Cowboys vs Raiders all time is 6-6, not 7-7.

Interesting series. Raiders win one, Dallas wins one. Raiders win 2 in a row, Dallas wins two in a row. Raiders win three in a row, Dallas wins three in a row.

Anonymous WaterBoy December 18, 2017 7:03 AM

Actually, the Catch/Possession rule is easy to fix:

1. Outlaw the forward pass.

or

2. Keep the forward pass, but treat all incompletions the same as a backward pass, ie, a live ball.

Consider a runner going toward the goal line, who fumbles it forward into the end zone, then recovers it before it goes out. Result: touchdown. Under this rule, the Jesse James not-catch would have still been a live ball, which he immediately recovered in the end zone. Result: touchdown.

The effect this would also have on the overall passing game would be....interesting.

Blogger Giraffe December 18, 2017 10:33 AM

The Vikings are doing that thing again. Where they suck you in, build up your hopes. And the Superbowl would be a home game too. DON'T DO IT, THEY WILL CRUSH YOUR SOUL. But wait, they stomped Cincinnati. I can't.... HELP ME!!!!!

I'd say you've missed a lot.

What a crappy end to muh Raiderz game. It was nice to see them come back and make a go of it, but to fumble away a chance for what seemed to be a sure FG to tie and take it into OT was heartbreaking.
