Supreme and superior

I wonder to whomever they might be referring?
The “User Reviews” sections of Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and The Internet Movie Database – all of which let users leave scored reviews regardless of credentials or official status on the web – are uniformly on the more mixed side as the film enters its second day of release, marking the widest disparity between critic and “audience” scores for a Star Wars movie in Tomatoes’ history in particular. Granted, the film has proven more divisive among many fans than the previous installment, with unexpected character turns and further cementing of the push for a younger, more diverse cast of new generation heroes – but this level of disparity has raised eyebrows.

Accusations of such activity are currently being leveled on social media by culture-commentators like activist Peter Coffin, who compared the proliferation of anonymous reviews name-checking the same set of points repeatedly (references to “forced diversity” and “SJWs” abound) to more explicitly politically-motivated “brigading” attacks from earlier in the year related to elections and social movements. The deeper recesses of Reddit and 4chan are indeed littered with threads in which enraged “ex”-fans organize campaigns in an attempt to control the narrative and create a situation wherein the idea of the new Star Wars Trilogy as “poorly received” can overtake the reality of its reception in the public discourse.

The term “Sad Puppies” has been raised, a reference to a collective of right-wing fiction writers who gained fame by manipulating the Hugo Awards several years back, along with the GamerGate and ComicsGate social-media movements. Some point to the aforementioned politically-tinged reviews as evidence of motive, while others allege that some of the brigading has been conducted by fans of Justice League seeking revenge on the critical press for its negative reviews. Also posited is that this comes from anti-corporate activists who see the recent acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney as the rise of a dangerous monopoly.
Let's see: Sad Puppies. GamerGate. ComicsGate. Now, who do we know was involved in all of those things.... The sad thing is that I now officially make for a better Dark Lord than anything in the current Disney SJWStar Wars mythos.

Man, they are NOT going to know what hit them when Alt★Hero comes out.

The animated trailers for 'The Old Republic' make for more compelling stories than most of what I've seen from Star Wars since the original trilogy.

Costs a lot less, too.

Anonymous Mace Dindu December 17, 2017 7:40 PM

Deadline has an article up questioning the validity of the low RT and Metacritic audience scores, since the movie got an A CinemaScore. They're claiming it might be bots (perhaps... RUSSIAN bots?).

Indeed. As was mentioned on the other thread, many noted the various SW computer games had much better plots, even surpassing the OT.

No dissent must be allowed because everyone must believe the film is fantastic.

I think it's already quite obvious that none of the new characters will have the iconic staying power of Luke, Han, Leia, Obi-Wan, Darth Vader, Palpatine, Yoda, or even Lando Calrissian and the most famous of all walk-ons, Boba Fett.

At this remove from Force Awakens, I can't remember a single memorable line from the movie except Po doing his Tony Stark impression when first captured by Kylo Ren, and that only for it's incongruity.

Blogger Cataline Sergius December 17, 2017 8:01 PM

There was a bigger disparity between the audience and the critics for Justice League.

I don't recall any SJW bitching back then

They can look for scapegoats all they want, there's no profit in that though. They have to do the tough thing and understand what they have done. They won't -- they'll double down.

Fact is, a fanbase naturally tends to stay loyal. They're the FANS, after all. And they will forgive missteps, too, as long as hope remains that a return to greatness is possible.

Continuing to push out garbage will make them gripe and seethe, yes. But then something worse happens, they stop showing up altogether. Star Wars: how to produce apathy from mania, in five parts.

The KOTOR games are better than any of the AAA titles Bioware has put out since Mass Effect 2. A KOTOR 3 would probably make The Last Jedi look like Monster Hunter International in terms of convergence, as lesbian levitation would obviously take precedence over phallic lightsabers.

Blogger Chris Lutz December 17, 2017 8:08 PM

@5 Lando Calrissian would be black, cardboard character if written today. He would be utterly pure, stereotypically black, and absolutely boring. In ESB, he's a character with a backstory. He's not perfect. He is actually interesting.

Blogger The Observer December 17, 2017 8:09 PM

At this point, it's hard to tell whether they're paid shills, or true believers. Probably a mix of both. The gamma/womanish tendency emerges once more - it's much better on the ego to believe in a vast right-wing conspiracy than just admit that your film is bad.

Man, they are NOT going to know what hit them when Alt★Hero comes out.

This is doubly so when most of them believe that since there has been no big news for a while, the project has faded into obscurity. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them believed the Supreme Dark Lord absconded with the money.

Probably won't have to wait for the comics to release to have some fun, though - I imagine the website should be enough to send their heads spinning.

@7 Let's look at the trajectory with Disney Wars:

TFA: retread of old movies led by Mary Sue. Boring but not horrible.
RO: War of the Accents. Reworked to make the last 30 minutes decent action wise. Otherwise it was forgettable.
TLJ: Learns nothing from TFA and goes full SJW.
Han Solo: It's already been significantly reshot with a different director. I don't think it loses money, but it won't earn much.

Blogger Johnny December 17, 2017 8:20 PM

I take the reviews to be the power of Disney. Nobody wants to cross them. And bet ya if money is changing hands it is done in a way that could not be proven to be a payoff. More likely really is that it is a mix who gets favored treatment, who gets hired, and who gets kept on. What it looks like is that Disney owns the process now, at least in their own market.

Blogger Cataline Sergius December 17, 2017 8:20 PM

Granted, the film has proven more divisive among many fans than the previous installment...

Yeah, this was the Star Wars that was so bad the audience finally noticed.

I am really curious as to what the second weekend's box-office take will be.

The Force Awakens made two billion world wide.

Rouge One made one billion.

Both had budgets in the 200 million plus range, no reason to think Last Jedi will be any different.

There has to be some panicking going on in Fort Mickey over the audience numbers. If it's a 40% dropoff then they are fine. But if it's in the seventy percent range... Well they will still make a profit but it's going to be pretty obvious that the Golden Goose is off-lay.

And if that's the case what happens when the expensive but wanted by no one "Solo" comes out?

Anonymous rusty fife December 17, 2017 8:26 PM

Is this a good place to propose an AltHero character?

How about The Blue Falcon? He can be an hero modeled on Kerry, McCain, Bergdahl, and Manning.

Talks a lot of trash about his heroism, blows up own ammo dumps, and throws his medals at the enemy as an ineffective "weapon".

the upcoming weeks will give a better picture of the accuracy/prescience of the user reviews. If there is a huge drop-off, then Disney likely has a turd on their hands, but overseas sales and merchandising ensures they cannot lose money no matter how bad it is. the only thing I agree with the left on is Disney is consumerist crap.

Blogger dtungsten December 17, 2017 9:23 PM

I have a friend that's taking his family to see it tomorrow. He told me another friend of ours loved it. I warned him to expect the worst, so at least he won't be disappointed. I told him not going to see it in the theater, but I will probably "rent" it later. Judging by the stuff I've read, I'm not going to like it, but a few things sound interesting.

The reaction is very much mixed among long time fans - most either love it or hate it. Very few in the middle but some are.

I guess that doesn't really add much to the discussion, but I had to get that off my chest.

As a long time fan, I'm strangely enjoying the negative reactions. Much like Palpatine saying, "Give in to your hate."

But not just Alt*Hero - Imagine the day when the sea of great novels out there selling like gangbusters can start being made into good movies instead of being left hanging because of the vision-less hacks of Hollyweird.

At the conclusion of the conference, a tribute to Comrade Stalin was called for. Of course, everyone stood up (just as everyone had leaped to his feet during the conference at every mention of his name). … For three minutes, four minutes, five minutes, the stormy applause, rising to an ovation, continued. But palms were getting sore and raised arms were already aching. … However, who would dare to be the first to stop? … After all, NKVD men were standing in the hall applauding and watching to see who would quit first! And in the obscure, small hall, unknown to the leader, the applause went on - six, seven, eight minutes! … They couldn’t stop now till they collapsed with heart attacks! …

The director of the local paper factory, an independent and strong-minded man, stood with the presidium. Aware of all the falsity and all the impossibility of the situation, he still kept on applauding! Nine minutes! Ten! In anguish he watched the secretary of the District Party Committee, but the latter dared not stop. Insanity! To the last man! With make-believe enthusiasm on their faces, looking at each other with faint hope, the district leaders were just going to go on and on applauding till they fell where they stood, till they were carried out of the hall on stretchers! Then, after eleven minutes, the director of the paper factory assumed a businesslike expression and sat down in his seat. And, oh, a miracle took place! Where had the universal, uninhibited, indescribable enthusiasm gone? To a man, everyone else stopped dead and sat down. They had been saved!
… That same night the factory director was arrested. They easily pasted ten years on him on the pretext of something quite different. But after he had signed Form 206, the final document of the interrogation, his interrogator reminded him: "Don’t ever be the first to stop applauding."
-- Alexander Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago

Why can't you zeks remember the simple directive from your Pedowood overlords - "Don’t ever be the first to stop applauding."?

I waited until they were on Netflix to see the force awakens and rogue one. I don't think any new ones go to Netflix, I think they're going to the new Disney channel.

So unless they show up on demand for free I'll probably miss them. Not really miss. I wouldn't have paid for either but rogue one wasn't bad.

When Castalia Films makes Nick Cole's Galaxy Edge books into movies nobody will remember any Star wars but the original trilogy.

Blogger NorthOfTheOneOhOne December 17, 2017 11:08 PM

A quick perusal of the RT review page also shows a large number of 1 and 2 line 5 star reviews. While it's possible that there are disgruntled fans that have organized against the film, I suspect that there is also a move by either SJW fans, the Mouse, or the producers to skew the rating in the opposite direction. The quoted article seems to be at best a case of SJW projection or an attempt to deflect suspicion.

Wait, wait, wait...y'all are missing the Superversive aspect in all this.

Consider the Diverse main characters:

Vice Admiral Holdo (female): Leads the Rebels on a futile escape effort, neglects to inform her underlings of the escape plan, commits suicide in a last-ditch effort to delay the inevitable.

Poe Dameron (male POC): Insubordinate hothead who permits an ineffectual effort to go forward, leading a mutiny in support of this plan.

Finn (male POC) & Rose Tico (female POC): Incompetent pair who fail to accomplish their side-mission, securing instead the services of an unknown conman who ultimately betrays them. One of them even prevents the other from knocking out the weapon that eventually cracks open the rebels refuge.

DJ (male POC): Double-crossing con man in it only for himself.

Rey (female): Helps Kylo Ren ascend to the leadership of the First Order in a misguided attempt to "save him".

Captain Phasma (female): Fails to exterminate her prisoners, "dies" in a fiery inferno.

White Male main characters:

Luke Skywalker: Prevents the destruction of the few remaining rebels and allows them to escape.

Kylo Ren: Prevented from eliminating the rebel threat, but slays Snoke and ascends to the leadership of the First Order.

----------------

By portraying all the women/POC main characters as bumbling, incompetent fools, and all the success on the white men, they are really fighting back against SJW culture.

[Whew, that was some strong scotch. Time to go sleep it off.]

The true nature of the leftist is contrarian. As such, we can now use the critics as a perfect negative indicator much like Paul Krugman financial advice, or the names Democrats give to their Bills in congress. The higher the critics' meta score, the more likely the movie is SJW dog shit.

Makes you wish there was a shitlord Hollywood producer out there to craft a movie that maximizes SJW reviewer ratings while being pure poison to the average viewer. It would be especially funny if they showed screeners and partially completed footage to SJW reviewers to get the studio to pony up ever larger amounts of cash for the project.
