Divisional Saturday

Things would appear to be shaping up very nicely for a pro-Vikings narrative for once. Of course, we'll need a Falcons win to set up for a REVENGE FOR 1998 storyline.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

That’s not unlikely... judging from the first minutes anyway.

Anonymous WaterBoy January 13, 2018 5:02 PM

I'm waiting for the Marcus Mariota - Matt Ryan matchup.

M-M-M-R...what better way to showcase the play, by hiding it in plain sight?

All the fields a stage, and they are merely players.

Blogger Lazarus January 13, 2018 5:04 PM

The narrative pushed at the beginning of the broadcast is that the Falcons are mentally tougher than last year.

So look out.

Anonymous Looking Glass January 13, 2018 5:27 PM

Here's a NFL theory:

They've told the officials, when it's possible a TD happened to just call it a TD and let the replay official give them the actual spot. It makes the call more "correct", but it also lets them run at least another set of ads per game.

I've noticed this over the last few years when a guy, even live, is clearly down before breaking the plane. They'll get it right in replay, but it slows down the game a good chunk.

Blogger YIH January 13, 2018 5:47 PM

Well the Falcons are doing their part, just pulled ahead 10-6.
If they upset the Eagles, they're still on the road for the NFC title.

Blogger YIH January 13, 2018 6:08 PM

Eagles make a 53-yard FG to bring it to 10-9 just before the half.

Blogger ((( bob kek mando ))) - ( the Original Militant Apathist ) January 13, 2018 6:56 PM

it's so cute that a Vikings fan thinks that the corporate suits that run the NFL would have any interest in what somebody in flyover country thinks.

Blogger Lazarus January 13, 2018 6:59 PM

If you think you are going to replace Dick Enberg, YIH, you have to at least come up with a tag line, like "Oh my!"

Falcons win would give Vikings home field next week

Blogger Sterling Pilgrim January 13, 2018 7:09 PM

Lifelong Saints fan here... mainly because Mississippi has to take the crumbs from surrounding states. But because of the Saints' Cuckery, I'm hoping they take a metaphorical horn up the ass in this game.

Blogger Billy January 13, 2018 7:10 PM

Vikings vs Patriots, Marxist media nightmare. The two whitest teams in the league.

Blogger Jake January 13, 2018 7:10 PM

Falcon's pass defense makes Nick Foles look like Tom Brady.

Blogger Sterling Pilgrim January 13, 2018 7:13 PM

Why DBs top out at 5'10" while most receivers are 6'3" will never cease to amaze me.

Blogger Jake January 13, 2018 7:26 PM

Why short dbs? Quickness and top speed to react to receivers.

What's the average height of a sprinter?

Blogger Sterling Pilgrim January 13, 2018 7:28 PM

So they can run fast in order to make sure they have a great view as Julio Jones leaps over them?

Anonymous Steve Canyon January 13, 2018 7:29 PM

We lost Keith Jackson today. "Whoa Nellie" is out

Blogger Sterling Pilgrim January 13, 2018 7:30 PM

Usain Bolt, sprinter, is 6'5"

Blogger Lazarus January 13, 2018 7:31 PM

Falcon's pass defense makes Nick Foles look like Tom Brady.

You are mean, have terrible ideas, and worse manners. Good thing the Falcons have the more mental toughness thing going for them.

Blogger Jake January 13, 2018 7:32 PM

If the throw is on the money and the WR makes the difficult catch then yes.

My guess: it's easier for a 5'10" guy to defend a jump ball than for a 6'3" guy to stick with a pro receiver.

Blogger Jake January 13, 2018 7:35 PM

Usain Bolt is the exception.

The narrative is in on this one. Falcons viking remix. I was thinking about the Saints narrative. Winning SB after Katrina. It doesn’t always go as planned but sometimes it does. I saw some bs calls against the eagles early in the game. Why, when the fans hate all these flags.

Anonymous Looking Glass January 13, 2018 7:41 PM

WR run routes, CBs have to play combinations of Zone & Man defense and react to the WR. You want smaller, nimbler guys. They lose out on jump balls, but they can cut routes and cover more net territory.

Blogger Lazarus January 13, 2018 7:44 PM

Looks like the "mental toughness" was "magical thinking".

Blogger Harris January 13, 2018 7:48 PM

Eagles advance

Blogger emx1 January 13, 2018 7:50 PM

I'm sure all of the "narrative" people will readjust their priors after the Falcons' loss. Or not...

Blogger Sterling Pilgrim January 13, 2018 7:54 PM

Matty Ice gets Iced again.

Blogger Jake January 13, 2018 8:00 PM

Falcons play 80% of their games on turf, put them on a grass field and they spend all game falling down.

Blogger van helsing January 13, 2018 8:04 PM

Note the Seahawks. They have used taller DBs, as they dont get muscled off routes as easily, and they can be much more brutal to wideouts for the first 5 yards off scrimmage without penalty. but in general, DBs have hands of stone compared to solid wideouts.

Blogger VD January 13, 2018 8:12 PM

Why DBs top out at 5'10" while most receivers are 6'3" will never cease to amaze me.

It has to do with what they call "hips". DBs have to run backwards and react very quickly, plus they need more acceleration than WRs. Taller fast guys tend to have more top speed and less acceleration, so they do better in a proactive offensive position.

Blogger Lazarus January 13, 2018 8:23 PM

DBs have to run backwards and react very quickly, plus they need more acceleration than WRs.

This can be confirmed by watching the pre-game drills for the DB's. Plus, they probably have good vertical jump.

Anonymous Looking Glass January 13, 2018 8:25 PM

@28 van helsing

Yup. Sherman is something of the exception, as he has solid top-end speed, but most CB are failed WR and aren't tall enough to jump over other WR.

Blogger Lazarus January 13, 2018 8:26 PM

Mariota had to call time-out already. Not a good sign.

Blogger Cinco January 13, 2018 8:41 PM

You know Nick Foles is really not terrible. How was he riding the bench for pennies when the Bears were paying Cutler and Glennon 10 Million a season.

i always considered running backwards easy. while no speedster, i could probably manage 80-90% of my sprint on a back peddle.

i had thought that people could be trained into that? *shrugs*

being as any decent playing surface is fairly flat and smooth, you don't really need to look where you're going. you can locate yourself on the field via the boundary lines ( more important for soccer ) and keep your eyes upfield on the attacking offense.

That Falcons Eagles game was fantastic. I thought the Falcons were gonna pull it out after that 4th down conversion on their last drive but the Eagles defense really came up big at the end.

Anonymous The Original Arrogant Steelers Fan January 13, 2018 9:32 PM

The referee cheating for the Patriots is in full effect. It's getting to the point where it's just a farce.

Anonymous Iron Spartan January 13, 2018 9:39 PM

The refs aren't even trying to hide they have orders to make the Pats win.

Anonymous Iron Spartan January 13, 2018 9:46 PM

Not a single Wal-Mart, in what is the heart of Vikings country, has ANY NFL merchandise on the shelf. Nothing.

Nor have I seen any ads related to the Superbowl. That has to be hurting TV and entertainment center sales.

Anonymous Beauty of football January 13, 2018 9:51 PM

I dont see anything fishy. The Patriots tight end is just too big and strong and fast for just about every defense and triple and quadruple teaming leaves other guys open...Also they have Brady... Did u know that right now I believe Brady is in the very exclusive company of and Kobe Bryant and Derel Jeter in that three have played in 7 Super Bowls, NBAFinals series, and World Series respectively and won 5 of the 7. If Brady and the Patriots win the Super Bowl this year. He will distinguish himself from Bryant and Jeter and be 6 for 8 compared to their 5 for 7s.

Blogger Lazarus January 13, 2018 9:54 PM

Even the people running the clock are in on it.

Anonymous Looking Glass January 13, 2018 9:57 PM

Home field time-keeper advantage?

The sad part is the football inflation stuff is like the least questionable thing the Patriots have ever actually done. Though the Pro-Patriot calls, lately, might have something to do with a deal reached after the Deflategate disaster.

"I dont see anything fishy. The Patriots tight end is just too big and strong and fast for just about every defense and triple and quadruple teaming leaves other guys open...Also they have Brady..."

Oh please spare us. The Patriots were gifted four calls this season that directly kept them from being a 9-7 team and missing the Playoffs. And that's not even mentioning all the other calls and breaks that go their way. The Patriots are the military industrial security complex memes of the NFL. They are persecuted with one hand by the NFL and lavishly gifted with the other hand. And it's getting to the point where it's absurd.

Anonymous Beauty of football January 13, 2018 10:23 PM

Also the Patriots defense is awesome.

Blogger Lazarus January 13, 2018 10:38 PM

There is no joy in Nashville, plus, Alabama declared a state of emergency due to the flu outbreak.

Its all bad.

Anonymous Beauty of football January 13, 2018 11:04 PM

I think there is a belief out there that Offense is more exciting than defense but i think good defense is exciting too.

Anonymous Beauty of football January 13, 2018 11:24 PM

But ya know i think the Steelers are capable of beating the Patriots. They should have plenty of motivation.

Even a farce does not put you up 35-7. You might actually have to be good.

Oh come on, you know better than that. Even Tony Dungy admitted those calls made it just about impossible for Tennessee to stay competitive.

And i overstated things about Rob Gronkowski. I have seen teams show that he can be effectively double teamed and i would imagine there are some players that can handle him one on one.

Blogger van helsing January 14, 2018 11:29 AM

well, some DBs do a nice job of jumping, and using what they have. and some wideouts, no, most big time diverse ones, are divas and dont werk that hard. some get it from college where they didnt have to werk at all. we also dont expect DBs to win every play. i remember a yearend game between minnehaha and the bears many years ago. vikes win and they are in the playoffs. lose, and no playoffs. bears outplayed them all game, tight game. last meaningful play, vikes qb tosses an alley oop to moss in the corner of the end zone, ftw. walt harris, short but no slouch, skies in to deflect and take it away. mossman strikes again. and the vikes go home for the playoffs.
