Introducing Arkhaven

Arkhaven is the new Castalia House imprint which will be responsible for publishing comics and graphic novel series like Alt★Hero, Alt★Hero Avalon, QUANTUM MORTIS, and Wodehouse, among others. It will be publishing in both digital and print editions, and we're pleased to announce that the first Arkhaven digital comic is now available today.

QUANTUM MORTIS A Man Disrupted #1: "By the Book"

Chief Warrant Officer Graven Tower is a ruggedly handsome military policeman who hates aliens. Fortunately, as a member of His Grace's Military Crimes Investigation Division - Xenocriminology and Alien Relations, he gets to arrest a lot of them. Sometimes he even gets to shoot them.

But while he doesn't like aliens, Chief Tower does very much like Detector Derin Hildreth of the Trans Paradis Police Department, who is unmistakably human. So when Tower has the chance to investigate the mysterious murder of an alien on the streets of Trans Paradis with her, he's not about to miss the opportunity. Especially when their mutual investigation just might give him the excuse to shoot an alien or three.

Issue #1 is 28 pages, retails for $2.99 at Amazon, and is available on Kindle Unlimited. If you want to check out the interior artwork, click inside and you can see the first few pages. The style is very retro Dick Tracy, which is decidedly out-of-fashion today, but then, it also lacks transgendered minority deviants, disturbing and inappropriate portrayals of children, and endless social justice advocacy. We did say we were going old school, you may recall.

UPDATE: Thank you all for the enthusiastic support!
  • #1 in Kindle Short Reads > 45 minutes (22-32 pages) > Comics & Graphic Novels
  • #1 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Comics & Graphic Novels > Military
  • #1 New Release in Kindle eBooks > Comics & Graphic Novels
  • #12 in Comics & Graphic Novels
The first 24-page print edition will be available in February and we're planning to have Issue #2 out in digital then as well. Since we're new to producing comics, we're using the QM series as a point man of sorts in order to avoid making any serious mistakes with Alt★Hero production. But no worries, we are still on track to have three of the first A★H digital editions out to the backers in February.

We also have a new line of Arkhaven t-shirts available at Crypto.Fashion, including both first official Alt★Hero Captain Europa t-shirt and the first official Alt★Hero Rebel t-shirt. Posters and more will be available there soon.

Got it. Kindle's navigation of the format is pretty good!

We don't need no brakes on this train!

Quantum Mortis art looks superb, real old school style.

Arkhaven comics will ultimately surpass Marvel and DC in both production and sales, just a matter of time.

Rebel shirt looks sweet too.

Just bought my copy!

Massive kudos to whoever designed that cover, on multiple axes.

I do quite like the logo. Evokes the classical comics.

Also seems very "A"merican.

Blogger James Dixon January 08, 2018 8:35 AM

Woot. Off to Amazon.

Oh, just wait. We're going to have some big news in this space in the near future.

Please, please, it's too much winning! We can't take it anymore! Mr. Vox, it's too much!

Great logo! The name, the design, just perfect.

Blogger marco moltisanti January 08, 2018 9:22 AM

I'm hoping you'll eventually be able to offer some Alt.Hero workout gear, similar to what UA has for Marvel and DC. A Captain Europa compression top would look awesome in the gym.

Still very much looking forward to the comics.

That's a good idea.

Not a bad experience in the Cloud Reader. I like the saturated colors. The art is kinda retro, as the previews suggest, but the storytelling's solid. This is a great medium for QM.

On my Fire it looks awesome

That's great news. Now POST THE REVIEWS THERE! I very much appreciate the feedback, but I'm already sold on QM.

Any chance this going to be up for sale on Comixology?

Blogger Tomas January 08, 2018 10:17 AM

Will it be available on Comixology? I know Amazon and Comixology overlap a lot and a number of people read semi-exclusively on Comixology.

Further, they can offer a .cbr version or similar which can be downloaded for offline reading in a comic book reader - I don't do that myself, but some people like it. It's a way to mimic the whole collecting aspect of the hobby.

Art looks great! Hoping to check it out soon.

Comics, you could argue, are the art form of the Twentieth Century, even more so than movies. Every time a new imprint comes out, it signifies that. They’ve influenced everyone from Stephen King to the movies, so that’s to be expected.

What surprises me is that it took so long for the genre comics to be big money-makers at the box office. The first Superman series in theaters did so-so, only. It wasn’t until the X-Men that comics really hit their stride on the rolling screen.

If comic imprints want to be successful --

Bought. Love the logo, BTW. Going to read it (and review) asap. I do wish it had Comixology guided view, but I'll admit that's kind of a "first world problem" on my part.

As to the workout gear, please do! It will give me motivation to work out!

Blogger dtungsten January 08, 2018 10:43 AM

My mistake, it does have guided view! I'd still like to be able to see it in my Comixology collection, but that's just a minor quibble.

Blogger Dave January 08, 2018 10:45 AM

They said it couldn't be done. They said you didn't know what you were doing. They said nobody would buy it. They said it was _retarded_.

Well, here it is, mofos.

Congrats CH/Arkhaven on the release of your first comic/graphic novel.

Anonymous Brick Hardslab January 08, 2018 10:57 AM

It was great but too short. More Tower needed. The art was a nice retro look and it flowed well. The interface was a little clunky. The exposition at the beginning would not zoom and the page with the pink or lavender panels did not zoom or flow from panel to panel for me. Other than that it was great. It was good on KU.

Who is the artist? I've never heard of him.

Blogger Brad Matthews January 08, 2018 10:58 AM

Will buy the paper in Feb. Prefer real to digital. Congrats. Loved the book, will be great to see it illustrated.

Anonymous Brick Hardslab January 08, 2018 11:01 AM

I don't know if this will be a duplicate comment. The art was good, there were some technical issues with the pages and lettering.

Too short but I'm hoping these will be collected into one book.

Blogger James Dixon January 08, 2018 11:02 AM

Bought. My Fire is at home, so it'll have to wait till tonight to look at. I'll try to read it tonight and leave a review tomorrow.

Anonymous DeeJay January 08, 2018 11:03 AM

Congratulations! I do recall seeing rough panel drawings of the QM comic here, a year or so before Alt-Hero got the push. What's the meaning behind the Arkhaven name? (Thought 'Castalia Comics' rolled off the tongue rather nicely, but oh well...)

Blogger VD January 08, 2018 11:09 AM

Any chance this going to be up for sale on Comixology?

When Comixology gets out of its own way. They make it very difficult for foreign companies to work with them. By which I mean actual snail mail is involved. We'll probably have several issues out on KDP before we can even submit anything to them.

The annoying thing is that we're already in the Amazon system, but Comixology isn't fully integrated into it.

Blogger VD January 08, 2018 11:10 AM

Too short but I'm hoping these will be collected into one book.

It's actually got four pages more than the standard $3.99 Marvel comic. But yes, once we're done they will all be collected into paperback and hardcover.

Blogger Kallmunz January 08, 2018 11:16 AM

I take it that Arkhaven will have its own web site soon.

Blogger Kallmunz January 08, 2018 11:17 AM

Arkhaven will have its own web site soon, yes?

It was just uploaded last night, so I doubt the metadata has fully percolated throughout the system yet.

Blogger slarrow January 08, 2018 1:07 PM

Yeah, my review isn't up yet either (wrote it a few hours ago). Then again, it was the first time I reviewed something directly from my Kindle Fire after I finished reading, so perhaps I don't have something configured properly (or they're not set up right yet.)

Anonymous E Deploribus Unum January 08, 2018 1:08 PM

It was hard to find on Amazon using the app

I typed "Quantum Mortis" at amazon.ca, and it was the first thing to pop up.

Anonymous A Deplorable Paradigm Is More Than Twenty Cents January 08, 2018 1:10 PM

Good logo. Like Captain America but not the same, recalls other comic emblems but not the same. Bold colors should make it pop out of the corner of a zine on a rack. Excellent symbology.

Blogger Stg58/Animal Mother January 08, 2018 1:48 PM

I found it instantly through my Kindle app

Blogger Aeoli Pera January 08, 2018 2:31 PM

Graven Tower would be a very easy Halloween costume.

Blogger Ahärôwn January 08, 2018 2:45 PM

This looks good - the preview throws you right into the story. I like the retro artwork.

Will wait for the hardcopy, as others have noted, but also realized I haven't read the original book yet.

Off to Amazon I go...

But speaking of comics, we will have not one, not two, but THREE related announcements later today.

In all the hullabaloo today I've lost track; are we still awaiting one more announcement or two?

Blogger dtungsten January 08, 2018 7:44 PM

I think this was all 3:

1) Arkhaven is a thing.
2) You can buy their first digital comic right now.
3) And T-shirts too!

Not that there won't be other announcements to come.

Anonymous Brick Hardslab January 08, 2018 8:03 PM

@50 Matthew, I sent you an email. I hope it helps. I forgot to add that the review function at the end of the book didn't work for me. It glitched several times then didn't submit the review.

Blogger Dave January 08, 2018 8:36 PM

The Kindle for PC app doesn't allow zoom function on this file; can that be added? Also when using guided view the panels that already fill the page horizontally and full page panels do not zoom in when doubleclicked like the smaller panels. Might be inherent Kindle app issues.

I'd prefer not to use the Kindle app but as ArkHaven is not yet established on Comixology I need to obtain the PDF and/or CBZ files that can be used with other readers like CDisplay Ex or CBR Reader, etc. If I send an email request is it possible to obtain the file?

Anonymous Holmwood January 08, 2018 9:15 PM

@Dave For zoom on a PC, try using the Kindle Cloud reader on a PC. It's surprisingly good for comics.

I was going to say "Not my thing, but good job." Then I started reading it. I read through to the end which I would have not anticipated.

Loved, loved, loved the retro art. (Caveat, I'm not remotely a comic book guy).

I wouldn't buy it per issue (I'd likely buy the final compendium though), true, but having it on KU (Comixology is not available in my country; KU is) is great.

Good job. Really good.

Blogger Dave January 08, 2018 9:59 PM

@Holmwood what browser are you using for Cloud reader?

Brave opens Cloud reader initially then closes and tells me it's not available in this browser.

IE 10+ zoom works however I cannot pan after zoom in and it keeps hanging while attempting to scroll or turn pages.

Good Day Vox,
