Mailvox: converged medicine

SJWs in Canada are attempting to play the "Code of Conduct" game in the medical field:
I am a physician in a Canadian province, and unbeknownst to most of the lay public, there is currently some infighting amongst the physician community here, centred on a physician's organization. In short: some autocrats within the organization have taken it upon themselves to try and impose a "Code of Conduct" on all members. This "Code" includes provisions placing limits on what members may speak or write in public, subject to the whims of unelected, unaccountable busybodies.

There is no reason or need for this Code. No provincial physician's group in the country has a similar Code. But, being familiar with your work, the phrase "Code of Conduct" sets alarm bells crashing in my head, and I recognize it for what it can only be: an SJW-style attempt to impose absurd and capricious rules on successful people.

I belong to an organization which is fighting all of this. Periodically they send out mass emails, and in the most recent one, they say this about the proposed Code: Most of the words used within the policy have no legal definitions and are so vague that they could be arbitrarily and subjectively applied to ANY words or actions of members; serving to silence voices through fear and suppression of free speech.

All of this may only be semi-interesting to someone outside the province and outside the profession, but I felt it to be yet another example of the "Code of Conduct" strategy currently being deployed by SJWs across the English-speaking nations. And Jordan Peterson recently predicted this, in a video in December - he's been involved with a fight over similar issues with the Law Society of Ontario, and he predicted that it would be coming to all professions, soon.

Well, he was right; it's here. Luckily some of us have read your books.
Personally, I think adopting a Code of Conduct is brilliant. Just suggest the following:
  • No telling lies.
  • No committing adultery.
  • No stealing or engaging in financial fraud.
  • No performing acts of euthanasia.
  • No performing abortions
  • No blaspheming the names of God or Jesus Christ.
Anyone guilty of violating the code will lose their medical license. Any questions?

Agreeing and amplifying may actually be a better defense against SJW-imposed codes of conduct than trying to argue that one is unnecessary. Once they realize it will be turned against them, they'll stop pushing for it.

I like the suggested CoC Vox or someone else once posted here before:

1) This document is our entire Code of Conduct
2) Anyone proposing any changes to this code will be immediately ejected from the organization

Haha, genius application of the Agree and Amplify strategy.

Additional:

No one in the obese category of BMI may work in the medical field. We must set a healthy example.

I like your six point C of C, but I wouldn't want to legitimize the idea that a C of C is acceptable by proposing it. On the other hand, if I were in a position to head off the debate by imposing a C of C that could not be changed, that would be a great one.

"subject to the whims of unelected, unaccountable busybodies"

Such busybodies will try to punish people, anyway. The codes are merely PR to give their decisions the appearance of legality.

I was reading sometime back where in the interest of "campus free speech" courts overruled a private university's restrictions on when a d where students could rabble-rouse on account of the school's own vaguely-worded mission statement. You know, something about "openness."

I tend to think the school is more competent to apply its own principles, and there are limits to "openness" even to those singularly dedicated to it (for whatever reason). And the court was obviously casting about to justify the ruling it wanted to make. But I found the idea that they were hoisted on their own mission statement funny.

Has that ever happened with a code of conduct?

written reprimand for repeating (including a place for the miscreant to sign
acknowledging having read and understood the list of expectations for
improvement), and a series of increasingly stern sanctions for subsequent
trangressions, such as suspension (for some years) from being eligible to
occupy any position at the National level.

Subject: [RASCals] New IPS Code of Conduct a condition of IPS membership

I’m a member of the International Planetarium Society (IPS) and today the
Society published a formal Code of Conduct:

http://www.ips-planetarium.org/?codeofconduct

What’s important about this is not the specifics of the Code but that
abiding by it is now a condition of membership. From the IPS President’s
email this morning:

“We must all take proactive measures to be sure we are aware of,
understand and abide by this Code of Conduct attached to this email.
Members will be asked to read and acknowledge this when they sign up or
renew memberships, and all conference participants will be asked to do
this as well.”

I think that this is something that the RASC should consider as well.

It's pretty sad when a past president essentially wants to ban free speech. Looks like the International Planetarium Society is already converged, I will speak out against this creeping danger, I hope others support me when I do. John G. has tried this sleaze before and been rebuffed, let's hope the group as a whole still has their collective heads on straight.

Blogger D M Ryan January 23, 2018 6:24 PM

Thanks a lot for posting this. If there's any take-away from Dr. Anonymous' letter, it's this:

As soon as you see a "Code of Conduct" floated, find a lawyer that's talented at critical thinking and hire him to read it. Then, pass around his assessment to everyone that's at risk of being bound to it.

Like 'em or dislike 'em, lawyers can be useful. You can see the above as akin to a "lawyer's letter."

Blogger weka January 23, 2018 6:29 PM

@24. Canada exports this kind of ordure. Their CANMEDS model of education has medical expert as only one of SIX aspects of being a physician, one of which "advocate" is weaponized by SJWs.

The only thing medical education should be concerned about is expertise. Skill. That includes some communication skills if you are a clinician.

May Canada reform. Or may Toronto secede: the rest of Ontario is fairly sane.

Hmm, sounds to me like a bunch of fervent members of the Flat Earth Society need to join the IPS. At a minimum, it will cause the IPS a lot of heartburn, but more likely, they will end up violating their own CoC.

I very much like your proposed code, except for one thing: Abortions (rather, legalized fetal infanticides), aren't "performed"; they're inflicted, committed, wreaked, perpetrated....

Don't physicians already have a code of conduct, referred to as the Hippocratic Oath?
Oh, that's right -- it's traditional but it's not legally binding, and in its many forms, none of them proclaim anything about social justice, so it's probably not an oath they want.

Blogger Meng Greenleaf January 23, 2018 7:14 PM

The best (perhaps only) way to deal with the massive problems in healthcare is deregulation (to end regulatory capture) and the elimination of State enforced licensing (to end rent seeking). The form your own private organizations with their own standards (including qualifications for private licensing).

Otherwise wait until A.I. have reached such levels of sophistication that they are able to replace medical professionals. Which may not be as far off as one would think (see: Watson)

Anonymous Dr. J January 23, 2018 7:49 PM

The SJWs would certainly not approve of the original oath. The prohibition on abortion and euthanasia alone would result in Richter scale detectable REEEEEEES.
