SFWA rejects Jon Del Arroz

So much for SFWA's increasingly ludicrous claim to represent the interests of professional science fiction writers. It's now an objectively racist organization of people who mostly don't write science fiction that doesn't accept American Indians or Hispanics who professionally publish science fiction.
Statement from the SFWA Membership Credentials Committee
Recently, a science fiction writer made a very public announcement of his application to join SFWA. SFWA Bylaws section VI.1.c.i gives discretion to the membership credentials committee “regardless of qualifications.” Based on the behavior of and online statements by this writer over the preceding year or so, which the credentials committee believes is inconsistent with the obligations that SFWA members have to one another, the committee has determined that it has good and sufficient cause to deny this membership.

We did not take this step lightly, and we are sensitive to suggestions that this action is due to the writer’s political opinions: it is not. SFWA does not, and will not, impose a political test or political standard for membership. We strive to be welcoming to all SFF writers of good will, whatever their personal beliefs or opinions. However, the membership credentials committee, comprised by the sitting Board of Directors, believes that admitting this writer would not be in keeping with our obligations to our membership.
SFWA is a heavily converged organization. As per the Impossibility of Social Justice Convergence, they are increasingly unable to perform their core function, which originally concerned representing the interests of professional science fiction writers.

Instead, they defend sex criminals, celebrate pedophiles and child molesters, accept members with literally ZERO science fiction publications, are largely comprised of amateurs who publish the occasional short story in short-lived amateur publications, and reject genuine science fiction professionals because of "obligational inconsistency." It is no wonder that the vast majority of bestselling science fiction authors don't bother to join the organization, since it has nothing positive to offer them.

SFWA is functionally dead. It serves literally no professional purpose anymore. As the lead editor at a mid-sized science fiction publisher, I can attest that it has absolutely no influence with science fiction publishers, distributors, and retailers whatsoever.

The most amusing aspect of this is that SFWA isn't even trying to hide that it is no longer a professional writers' organization anymore. The small print they cited from the new bylaws means that they can literally accept anyone the committee likes as a member, whether the applicant has ever written anything or not, whether the applicant is even human or not. Thanks to the short-sighted fools who gave in to Ann McCaffrey's threat to quit if they did not let fantasy writers join, SFWA is now an organization for racist cat ladies and their cats, not science fiction writers.

Important lesson: whenever someone threatens to quit unless you do x, the only correct response is to say: "We are not doing x. We accept your resignation. Goodbye."

Now, as always, the SFWA statement hides its true justifications behind a nebulous fog. What are the actual justifications that supposedly provide "good and sufficient cause"?
Dear Mr. Del Arroz,

SFWA Bylaws section VI.1.c.i gives discretion to the membership credentials committee "regardless of qualifications." Based on online statements and your behavior from the past year, the membership credentials committee believes it has good and sufficient cause to deny your membership in order to keep SFWA virtual and physical spaces harassment-free and has done so.

Examples of behavior from the past year:
  • Threatening to film people without their consent at private SFWA functions.
  • Soliciting people on social media, including Facebook, Gab, and Twitter, in order to "troll" and harass other professional authors, including SFWA members and board officers.
  • Accusing SFWA of "doxxing" your children, supporting pedophiles, racism, among other attacks.
Sincerely,

The Membership Credentials Committee

SFWA, Inc.
Of course, if they were to hold the existing membership to the standard they are claiming, they'd have to expel half the leadership, past and present.

I've often wondered why nobody has tried to establish another association for "genuine science fiction professionals". Is there nothing to be gained now that self publishing is a viable option? Or is it that within 5 years everyone in SFWA would attempt to join the new association?

WTF? When did *that* become a requirement? If "good will" had been a requirement when it was founded, the organization would have died in its crib because it would have had only ten members.

@8 - VD: I would encourage any such organization to have you as a permanent, non-removable member of the board. If anything keeps the nutters away, that would.

Ready for symbolic scarecrow duty? Perhaps you could be like Mr. Smithson and they'd bury you in the corporate offices as Smithson's crypt is on the national mall so you could serve permanently.

It shocks me how much this has progressed since 2014 - It seems to me that the world was still normal back in 2014 at least to my reckoning.

Ive also been thinking about Why SJWs destroy the organizations they converge.

The answer is as far as I can see is incredibly simple.

They are not aiming to do so Its Just that they have two masters - and they cannot serve both.

So they end up working for the Narrative at the expense of Sci-fi (in this instance)

Effectively they are stealing the focus of an organization. Which kills it slowly.

Thing is they are parasites - who have not learned how not to kill the host they are stealing energy from.

The best they could hope for is: commendalism where by they do this with no benefits but also no ill effects to the host. That would take skill though to follow Social Justice AND Science fiction.

In fact they are so bad at not killing their hosts that they have arguably become a virus - which is under imperative to spread the narrative everywhere regardless of the effect.

The reason is they serve a different master call it Entropy call it the Devil, call it Nihilism call it stupidity call it indoctrination, in fact call it whatever you like.

These people I strongly suspect have no Truth in them almost as if God has drained his essesence from them, to get religious they have no or very limited holy spirit .

It looks to me as a complete newbie that the road to follow is building personal relationships with other indie writers for cross promotion and audience building. That is what JDA, Cole and Anspach as well as others are doing quite successfully.

I have been promising myself SJWAL for some time and finally bought it having, I believe, spotted SJW activity at an incipient stage.
No one's job or reputation is on the line and no one cares about small allotment holders in a small town in middle-England except John, who moved here recently.
John believes that we need an association to 'represent the interests of allotment holders to the local council'; except he doesn't. This is a small town, what he really believes is that the watering stand-pipes should be removed and replaced with a communal water butt to save water. John believes this despite the fact that the town is in a high-rainfall temperate zone at the confluence of two rivers. John is an idiot and quite possibly an SJW. He also plants on the border walkways around his allotment.
I didn't go, but John has held his 'inaugural meeting of the allotment association' (elected Chair, naturally) and sent me the minutes.
Now all of this is of interest to no one apart from one thing. I can't rule out the possibility that a fellow allotment holder has already read SJWAL. The first two items from the floor of the meeting to take to the council? MORE watering stand-pipes and addressing the problem of planting on border walkways.
It all promises to be hugely entertaining.

Comics

For fun I'm currently reading the comic "Fighting American".

Predictions

(1) "Chaos Lad" of 1954 becomes the transvestite known as "Madam Chaos" in 2017. Saws it coming on the final panel of issue 02. Prediction came true in issue 03.

(2) In a future issue "Special Agent Lydia Rutherford" of the FBI will be shown to be a lesbian. I see it coming. Time will tell.

SJW comics are predictable. And that my friends are why I make mine Alt-Hero.

You know what would really shock me in a comic? Heterosexual romantic tension, a deep devout Roman Catholic character, or ~gulp~ the complexity that the presence of children adds to a storyline. Now that would be a shock.

In other words: SJW's view organizational rules as a method to stack the group full of their tribe while keeping others out.

I thought their stated reason was about as explicit as you could get.

It's time to use that type of organizational rules against the SJW's. Make them pay for every precedent they set, every social contract they break.

Anonymous Jo January 21, 2018 6:01 PM

I was looking around online trying to find the organization's mission. So I figured I'd look it up on their 990 form. The latest one I could find online was for 2015/16. It reads:

"THE PURPOSE OF SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY WRITERS OF AMERICA IS TO"

And that's it. Shrug. I have no idea what their official mission is. It looks like their service programs just exist to pat each other on the back. Nebula Awards being the biggest $ amount program.

At the time of the 990, they had about 1.2 million in assets, and again, I'm not sure what their mission is or how their programs help further that mission.

If anyone wants to check out the form, it's here: http://990s.foundationcenter.org/990_pdf_archive/461/461973968/461973968_201606_990.pdf

And I got to this form from 990 Finder, located here: http://990finder.foundationcenter.org/990results.aspx?action=Find&fn=&st=&ei=461973968

Personally, I'm thinking this whole organization is a joke, but that's because I have trouble seeing how it's relevant. Also, refusing to accept a professional writer in the genre is just downright suspect.

Also, didn't someone say SFWA was out of California? Looks to me like the organization is based out of Connecticut.

Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America
PO BOX 3238
Enfield, CT 060833238

That doesn't sound like California to me, but maybe I'm missing something.

Anonymous Jo January 21, 2018 6:21 PM

Ah, this seems to be their mission:

"SFWA INFORMS, SUPPORTS PROMOTES, DEFENDS AND ADVOCATES FOR ITS MEMBERS SFWA HOSTS THE PRESTIGIOUS NEBULA AWARDS EACH YEAR AT THE NEBULA CONFERENCE, ASSISTS WRITERS IN LEGAL DISPUTES WITH PUBLISHERS, OFFERS A SPEAKERS BUREAU, ADMINISTERS GRANTS TO SFF ORGANIZATIONS AND TO WRITERS FACING MEDICAL OR LEGAL EXPENSES"

Funny, it's not listed in PART III (1), but rather mentioned in PART I (1), summarizing the organization's most significant activities.

So. Basically, they:

1. inform,
2. support,
3. promote,
4. defend,
5. and advocate

...for their members. To do this they:

1. host nebula awards,
2. assist writers in legal disputes with publishers (love to see those records),
3. offers a speakers bureau, whatever that is,
4. gives grants to sff organizations, and
5. gives grants to writers facing medical or legal expenses

I've been noticing for a long time a bad effect of public education. It's not so much political as social. What I'm talking about is this prissy, schoolmarm world view. The world view that says, "We don't like your behavior; we don't like your tone. If only we'd given you the Ritalin sooner."

Maybe, I'm wrong, but this rather feminine attitude seems pervasive throughout our society; and just my journey thru life makes me think it's derived form public education, where it is the driving force.

( www.sffcguild.com ) a professional org for writers, game creators, editors, indie publishers & indie filmmakers, comic book creators and other artists who create SFF content. The website is under construction but there is an announcment message on the site.

For now, we are not yet accepting membership applications. As soon as the website and members-only forums are up and running, we will open for membership.

In the meantime, we have a temporary tent of sorts for pro creators to hang out and inquire about what our plans are at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/726470947555061

There is a Twitter account: @SFFCGuild

Main point: You won't be banned or pre-banned because of politics, religion or social issue stances. Our only goal is to promote SF/F and the incredible artists who create it.
