The costs of convergence

The NFL has gone from bleeding viewers to outright gushing them.
Every single game was down, no matter how good the games were. And, remember, three of these games were highly competitive in the divisional round this year. Whereas last year only two of the games were competitive. Hell, three of the four windows even feature one of the same teams from last year. And yes, I know, the Cowboys and the Packers played last year and those are the two biggest fan base draws in the NFL, but even if you pull that game out the numbers for the other three games also declined double digits.

Adding all these numbers up 120.8 million viewers watched the NFL divisional round playoffs in 2018 vs. 144.1 million who watched in 2017, a decline of 23.3 million total viewers.

That’s an overall viewership decline of over 16%, even steeper than last week’s 13% playoff decline.
What a pity it doesn't occur to corporate executives to consult with the kind of experts who could tell them how to avoid these sorts of self-mutilations.

Clearly the NFL needs a New England vs Minnesota Super Bowl. Desperately. Is that... is that THE NARRATIVE'S music?

The NeverKneel Bowl

Anonymous Looking Glass January 19, 2018 6:44 PM

Vikings game was probably the only one they were willing to show the crowd from, as the rest had at least 30% not in attendance. (Though I'm sure the tickets were sold.) The Pittsburgh game was noticeably empty in the upper deck if they ever let it slip in, something clearly mandated for them to avoid doing.

As for the Narrative, is Sam Bradford flying off the top rope?

The biggest test will come with the SB drop. That's practically a national holiday, so it'll be interesting to see what happens. Especially if there's a big, anecdotal, drop off in SB parties.

@2-On the bright side, fewer superbowl viewers means fewer men beating their wives. Amirght, feminists?

Was it womyn instead of SJWs and blacktivism that ruined the NFL? First with all that pink stuff, then by manipulating Colin Pumpernickel through his girlfriend. We don't know what axt he may have been performing when kneeling during the anthem first occurred to him.

Capperknuckle was a vehicle for MSEPSN to dive into their hard-Left turn, considering the money being funneled towards BLM and the like. It was just one more plot point along the way to the Left's Permanent Victory. The NFL, like all other converged organization from a big city couldn't comprehend that people don't watch Sports to be preached at. Especially the Church set that likely came from a Church not that long before.

Anonymous tublecane January 19, 2018 7:06 PM

I think the NFL desperately wants Tom Brady, but I still don't understand why the "homefield advantage" superbowl is such a great Narrative. The media talks it up a bunch, but do regular folks (outside MN) actually care?

There's the fact that the Vikings have never won a superbowl, but neither have the Eagles. The Vikings lost more superbowls, but that was a long time ago.

Now that I write that, I realize the NFL's core viewership could remember the 70s as easily as 2004.

Anonymous Redjack January 19, 2018 7:08 PM

Honestly? I am to the point I just don't care. Missed all the play off games last weekend. That is a first for me.

It wasn't even the anthem stuff. Well, that ended it I guess, but I got tired of being lectured when I watch sports. Got tired of pink on the field and women announcers trying to raise awareness of what ever the topic of the day was.

I am probably not going back. No reason to.

Blogger Timmy3 January 19, 2018 7:09 PM

The games are so tedious to watch. Replays, fouls, concussions, timeouts. Never mind the uneven matchups although the Vikings vs Saints playoff was worth watching.

Yeah they do, problem is he is at this moment listed as ''questionable'' due to a cut thumb - pretty serious one, blood, stitches, the works.
Now I don't doubt he'll be trotting out there Sunday, but still, how will this affect him?

The gameplay is as good as ever, but for me at least what has is making the NFL more and more unwatcheable is all the stoppages for review. I mean, baseball seemed to move faster last year. But I guess it is inevitable for America's game to reflect America, where we sue and nitpick every little law and regulation.

I used to be skeptical of the "narrative" idea in the NFL. But then I saw that Warden Lewis was hired again by the Bungles as was the coach for Cleveland, (a Warden Lewis protege), with a juggernaut of a record of 1-31.

Yeah, makes sense now.

Screw 'em. A bunch of players living the American dream, making more money than most folks will ever see in their entire lives. I care nothing for ungrateful hypocrites who are hell bent on destroying the cultural fabric of the country.

Instead of living in a world without broken families we're watching smug pontificators spit on the American flag and then listening to them lecture us about our place in the world as if they're some sort of proven authority we should all genuflecting before.

It's all disgusting. I'm disgusting. These people are barkers of sin, peddlers of broken families and evil revolutions.

I watched no regular season games this year but managed to see most of Minnesota’s post season victory. I hope they win in Philly but have no idea now if I’ll have time to watch.

I still think they need to complete their 1 hour game in less than 2.5 hours. We hates commercials

Blogger Edgar Abbey January 19, 2018 7:59 PM

The NFL is, of course, afraid to crack down on their teams to enforce discipline and respect for America for fear of a large number of their players revolting and choosing to shut down the whole damn system, while the mainstream media cheers them on.

This is one (of many) reasons why I have stopped following the NFL and kept my focus on college football, where at least for now, teams seem to have kept better control of their SJW players.

One notable exception is Missouri, which made a big stink a couple years ago and is now a complete disaster. But most other teams keep up at least the veneer of being in line with their fans.

I mean, it could be argued that the free wifi is technically for the guests. But the signal reaches outside. If I'm in just the right spot I get a pretty solid connection. My moral compass feels okay using the wifi. It's possible I'm rationalizing instead of being rational.

This seems more catastrophic to the NFL than the infamous strike season was to MLB. I'm not convinced that the NFL can easily recover, either. The bloom is off the rose. Those damned kneelers destroyed all the nostalgia of a lifetime of support from this former fan. Even Jerry took a knee -- America's Team no more. They are nothing but a bunch of angry tribalists who are flying a middle finger at my nation, so they can go to hell and stay there imho. What's the draw? They can run off and beat their wives without me.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The NFL made a mistake.

Earlier this week, the NFL’s official Facebook page promoted a chance to win seats to Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis. No problem, right?

Sure, but in the post, the league promoted a matchup between the Patriots and Vikings. Both teams are playing in their respective conference championship games this weekend, and have yet to clinch a spot in the Super Bowl.

It's an amazing business model when you just don't dismiss half of the population, you actively tell them to fuck off: ESPN, NFL, late-night TV, etc. Nothing like using psychographics to choose groups with EBT cards and an SJW agenda, rather than people with jobs and disposable income. Ideology comes first.

I can understand why the powers want the Vikes in the Superbowl.

Here in Minnesota, lots of us who really don't want any part of it all have been watching the Viking games religiously for weeks. TV numbers are high, and you won't find an empty seat at the games.

It almost feels like breaking faith with what we believe, and we're slightly ashamed for tuning in.

But, damn . . .

Blogger Dave January 20, 2018 12:41 AM

If Brady's hand falls off by Sunday, the NFL will be left with Brian Hoyer, Case Keenum, Nick Foles and Blake Bortles at QB this weekend. Not the way they would've drawn it up, I'm sure. That's why the actual narrative was for the Saints & Brees to win but the Vikings spoiled their plan with the Hail Mary.

Blogger flyingtiger January 20, 2018 12:44 AM

I noticed in the NO-Vikings game is that the upper levels were empty. There were also many empty sections on the lower level. The game is dying.

Anonymous tublecane January 20, 2018 1:07 AM

Anonymous tublecane January 20, 2018 1:21 AM

@42-Just think, in the divisional round they had four big name quarterbacks: Brady, Brees, Roethlisberger, and Ryan. (Or if Ryan's not a big name, he's at least a name.) Now they have Brady and three nobodies. There's justice in there.

Anonymous Walter Oleg January 20, 2018 1:44 AM

The Patriots are carrying the NFL. Even the Black SJW Steven A. Smith at ESPN admits that.

The patriots are a proto-Alt-Right football team. They're the major reason to watch the NFL. They display the most Whiteness on offense (receivers, full back, even a white tailback, TE) in the NFL.

They’re exciting to watch.

The play call for the 2-point conversion to tie in SB51 was gutsy.

Brady is admirable because of his work ethic, healthy lifestyle, and his ability to perform under pressure. He's able to make good decisions in seconds. Changing plays at the line of scrimmage isn’t easy. He was down 28-3 with 9 minutes to go in 51.

They've been Middle America's team since the Super bowl after 9-11. But now it’s time for a new team.

Why doesn't Vox Day and/or Richard Spencer talk to some wealthy types to buy an NFL team? You both came from the upper middle to lower upper class.

Think about it. You buy the Browns and rename them the Frogs. You try to build an all-White team. You don't hide this intension. There’s no disrespect to black players, they dominate the sport in the scoring positions and corner backs. It would be interesting to see if a White team could succeed in the NFL. There would be no hard feelings. Just fun. SJWs will just have to learn not to take things so seriously.

I guarantee NFL ratings would sky rocket. You build an all-White team or AWAP (As White As Possible). They would be an “all business” team, just like the Patriots. No ghetto celebrations. The National anthem before the game would be a tribute to country and civilization. People would get to the games early to be a part of it. It should include a prayer. Halftime show would be the next symbolic act. At every home game there would be a nice, wholesome, family halftime show, that really was entertaining.

Again, I say that NFL Ratings would skyrocket. This would be one of the most interesting sports stories ever.

It truly is a story of “breaking barriers” that we hear about all the time.

I think it would make the world a better place.

The NFL used to be my one BIG escape from politics. I admit didn't like the sanctimonious "pink month" and I had a deep hated of their selfish ties to the Military-Industrial-Complex war machine, but I put up with it and watched... until this year.

I'm done and I'm never going back. I haven't watched a minute of their filthy shit-show. Fuck those rich bastards. And a special "FUCK YOU" to the rich bastard owners. They're blood-sucking parasites.

We all know bloody damn well that if a player took a knee to protest the blood soaked war machine or the high abortion rate among blacks, he'd have been forced off the field in a minute and his career would be over.

Anonymous cc January 20, 2018 12:52 PM

My hoped for scenario: Pats (with Brady) beat Jacksonville on a very controversial play. Philly beats Minnesota in a blow-out (sorry, VD). Brady is hurt and cannot play in the SB. Some players kneel during National Anthem. Even without Brady, Pats are up by 20 at the end of the first Q, and up by 30 at the end of the half. At half-time show, some performers kneel. Pats win by more than 40. No one is watching on tv and the stadium is empty (except for Pats fans) by the end of the game.
