Three authors weigh in on Worldcon

Jim Butcher, Larry Correia, and John Scalzi all have something to say about Worldcon's decision to ban Jon Del Arroz from attending.

Jim Butcher is unimpressed

Don’t agree with Larry about everything, but when it comes to WorldCon and the Hugos, I think he’s got a point or two which are, based upon my experiences with WorldCon, difficult to refute.

The choices made by various folks involved with WorldCon have, over time, convinced me that there’s quite a few more less-than-nice people there than at other conventions. As I get older, my remaining time gets increasingly valuable. If I went to WorldCon, that’s a weekend I could have spent with some of the many wonderful people in my life, or with excellent and nerdy readers who don’t much care about politics and just want to do fun nerd things. Or I could have spent that time writing.

There’s probably a lot of perfectly wonderful people helping with WorldCon, and there’s certainly a lot of nice people attending. But it’s sort of hard to see them through the crowd of ugly-spirited jerks, and the nice people of WorldCon? They are completely inaudible over the noise the jerks are making.

So for the kind people at WorldCon, I hope you catch me at another con or signing sometime, and thank you so much to those of you who buy my work.

To the jerks, may you meet no one who displeases you, and I hope that your con goes exactly the way you want it to go.

Larry Correia hasn't even been paying attention.

Wait... so how did WorldCon embarrass themselves now? They banned a dude because he’s got the wrong politics and he’s loud and annoying about it? Heh. These assholes have allowed stalkers, creepers, weirdos, sexual harassers, and pedophiles to attend, but at least those folks had the right politics and thus were not guilty of any dangerous wrongthink.

And now they are saying that they booted him because he said he said he was going to wear a body cam to protect himself from false allegations.

I can’t imagine why a conservative author would want to cover his ass at a con in enemy territory... oh wait.

A few years ago NK Jemison tweeted about how she heard that Larry Correia was horribly rude and racist to a poor Author of Color on a panel at GenCon! GASP. So immediately ten thousand social justice nitwits retweeted about my horrible racism.

Until I responded with Oh really? Which panel? Because every panel I was on at GenCon was recorded. Let’s go to the tape.

And that shut that nonsense right down.

If you are an author with the wrong politics, and you are at a con surrounded by social justice warriors who love to make up accusations, you would be a fool not to keep witnesses around.

Is Jon annoying? Eh, I’ve talked to him about his tactics for activism. We’ve got some disagreements. Different strokes for different folks.

But banning a guy for being annoying? Have you ever been to a scifi convention? 😀

But they can’t come out and say he has the wrong politics and his activism bothers them, so instead, as usual they make up some crap about feeling “unsafe” and “harassment”. Which is funny, because with SJWs harassment is a one way street. And they can harass the shit out of anyone who disagrees with them. And if you don’t like it here is your official WorldCon wooden anus.

Personally, I wrote off WorldCon after they demonstrated they are an insular circle jerk. I proved my point about them a few years ago. None of this is surprising now.

And John Scalzi is at his projecting, posturing best. I'm sure we're all surprised.

John Scalzi@scalzi
So a convention pulled an obnoxious twit's attending membership and as a result a bunch of other obnoxious twits are boycotting the convention, and now I think every convention has an easy template for ridding itself of obnoxious twits.

John Scalzi@scalzi

Sure you don't, Blobby. Now go eat another box of donuts while your career - and, thanks in part to you, your publisher - continues to spiral into the ground.

I am completely comfortable with a private club excluding whoever they want to exclude, provided it does not have an illegal motive. The only difficulty is the no doubt dishonest reason they give for doing it, when they give a reason. Hey, just say we don't want conservatives around, we are a lefty club. And that privilege should be afforded to other groups in our society.

When Butcher is telling you to piss off (no matter how politely), it's over. He doesn't get involved in these disputes as a general rule, except to ask everyone to play nice. And in the SFF world, he's actually a big deal.

I don't give a shit what that sad little boy (or his equally sad party pals) does or thinks about anything.

Only Johnny Con could turn ZFG into what reads like a pedo-bubble party. I'm becoming more and more convinced that "Krissy" is just a beard covering for his paramour Jim Hiney.

He's made several tweets like the above where at this point I wouldn't be surprised if he turns out to be another SF-pedo.

@Johnny It is afforded to other groups in our society now. Unfortunately, all of these groups are minority groups. It's white people and especially men that can't have their own private clubs. I bet, despite their proclivity towards "diversity," WorldCon is largely full of white people, Jon is Latino, so they have to exclude him on grounds of safety - otherwise it's "racist," and they can't be seen as racist.

The anti-recording provisions in COCs have always raised my antenna. I have worked for a couple larger sized corporations and it's boiler plate in their COCs. Their excuse is it "erodes trust" but the real truth is HR's word is worth more than any other employee's word in the current state and they want to keep it that way.

I guess it never occurs to Johnny NoLift that today's smug, self-righteous white male author-in-decline is tomorrow's annoying twit. If he were half the wise, discerning observer he thinks he is, he would realize that once every writer who ever voted for someone to the right of Bernie is gone, Johnny NoLift is next.

Oh, well. He'll always have Whatever, right?

If writings always reflect on the author, Butcher is probably a solid guy. Dresden morally reigns himself in and shows courage to a fault. And a literal Knight of the Cross is depicted as a shining light and even more incorruptible.

I am expressing a general opinion and I decided not to fine tune it to current circumstance. Freedom of association should include the freedom of non association. Currently we do have this intrusive government making all sorts of arbitrary and discriminatory rules, that are of all things, sold under the claim that they are fighting the discrimination even as they covertly enforce it.

One thing that speaks well of him is the knight character. I get the impression that Butcher himself isn't a believer but he has respect for believers and views them as allies rather than adversaries.

Once they start selling tickets to the public, they are by definition no longer a private club.

It's going to be interesting when the SJWs come for Scalzi. My money's on this scenario:

Scalzi admits himself to a reeducation-through-labour camp for straight white pudges. While he's inside, the husband hightails it with NK Jemisin. The daughter, after competing on the underground bench-press circuit, hooks up with Richard Spencer. Tor Books collapses after a clean sweep of the Bradleys in 2019, with accusations of a fix (later referred to as TorPedoGate).

@3:

"I am completely comfortable with a private club excluding whoever they want to exclude, provided it does not have an illegal motive."

Unfortunately, your caveat regarding illegal motive is unworkable in the "insane" society in which we live. Illegal does not equate to morally wrong. Either the right of free association exists, or some group can (and will) make it "illegal" for some other group(s) to exist, to freely choose to intermingle (or not), or to have their voices heard at all.

Link: Senator Feinstein Tells Social Media Executives "You Don't Get It"

Senator Diane (((Feinstein))) tells Facebook, Google, and Twitter executives that they don't get it when it comes to what Russia has been doing on its platforms. She warns them that since they created the platforms, they must now address their misuse, or Congress will.

"Muh Russian interference" is merely an excuse to criminalize self-organization and free speech which Sen. (((Feinstein))) does not approve. Ergo, the threat to criminalize through "self-policing" (censorship de facto) or through the heavy hand of the law (censorship de jure).

At that point, what difference does it make?

Blogger Alexander January 05, 2018 10:00 AM

I met Butcher briefly at DragonCon a few years back. While his fellows were raking in the bucks in a giant hall, he did his signing at one of the booksellers, and overrode an organizer who said the line was full: I will stay as long as necessary for everyone, no worries.

Guy behind me offered to take photo for me but it was shit. After line was finished I went up to Butcher as he was packing up and asked if I could try again. Very polite, cracked a few jokes.

I was pretty impressed by that when I came across it. The only other current fantasy author that depicts Christians in a positive light that I had come across before that was John Ringo. Now I'm aware of John C. Wright and others, but at the time I had pretty much given up on most current fantasy because it would go out of its way to bash Christians.

This was my initial assessment of him as well. But as time goes by I am more inclined to consider a proclivity towards prepubescents as a likely property.

I mean, just look at that goofy grin and those beady little eyes on that shrunken misshapen head of his. I've said it here before: I bet law enforcement would love to get a look at his hard drive.

He also wrote a character who, after having witnessed angels and wielded a holy sword in his hands, remained a staunch atheist by cooking up rationalisations.

I think that was a great touch. Miracles aren't going to convince anyone who doesn't want to believe. They will always find an excuse. The Hebrews had just been miraculously delivered from bondage in Egypt and had seen the power of God personally, and yet Moses wasn't gone more than a couple of days and they went to worshiping an idol. I also liked the way the other characters reacted to that, basically rolling their eyes.

Blogger cmbaileytstc January 05, 2018 10:27 AM

Is Castalia House big enough to have a large space in DragonCon? A massive public presence is always a good way to intimidate your enemies.

And it occurred to me that many people at these cons like to dress up. Why not get people to dress as Alt Hero characters and infiltrate these converged cons? Someone comes up and asks "who are you supposed to be?" can be met with the mysterious: "I'm playing a character in a new comic coming out". The reveal can be as simple as setting out flyers for Alt Hero everywhere on the last day of the con.

(Sadly "Rebel" is out since the Stars and Bars battle flag motif will immediately get cries of outrage and the young woman ejected from the con).

@24 - Harry Dresden knows that God, angels, demons, elves, and assorted creatures exist. He just doesn't Believe in them, like a normal person doesn't Believe in the toaster. It's just a toaster, doing what toasters do. Harry Believes in magic - that's part of why it works so well for him.

He's talking about the agnostic Knight of the Cross who has spoken with archangels but remains unconvinced. Butcher's greatest talent is that he can take the most absurd situations and characters and make them fit believably in the story.

In this case, it's the agnostic, black Russian who carries a holy sword and takes guidance from Michael and Uriel while still questioning what they are.

My observation is that the older folks (a good many of whom I know in Real Life), left to their own devices, wouldn't be such twats, but the younger more-converged set is now calling the tunes, and the old folks still want to "belong" so they've taken up the banner, and now it's too late to change course.
