No word yet on if it's terrorism, gas, or something else.

Police have declared a “major incident” after reports of a “massive explosion” at a supermarket in Leicester.

John Alexander, a local resident and journalist who was evacuated from the area told the BBC, the shop and the flat above it had been ”completely flattened” by the explosion.

More of a shop, not what we'd refer to as a supermarket in the states.

The shop is being described as a 'Polish convenience store' by the Mirror and has been open about 6 weeks.

Watch for any nervous looking German tourists.
They may need to be questioned.

There's a fairly large Muslim population in Leicester, as there is in most cities in the Midlands. My gut instinct is that this is a gas main, but, if the incident is terrorism-related, I'm inclined to think it'll likely be some sort of bomb-making slip-up. It's a really odd choice for an isolated target.

Whatever it is, the backlash will be a bigger concern for the 'authorities' than the actual event itself.

That you can be sure of.

It's a small independent convenience store that blew up. Owner names sound Indian, but not obviously Muslim. Probably a gas explosion by the looks of it.

Place money on a gas explosion. Tightening regulation and licensing gas installers over the last thirty years has reduced this type of incident from a weekly occurrence in this area to extremely rare. Only an idiot would tinker with a gas boiler or pipes without full accreditation (follow up investigation would find and prosecute an unlicensed practitioner). That is unless someone feels somewhat immune from too many questions being asked. Can't imagine who.

The hypocrisy in on Twitter is hilarious when it doesn't look terrorism related.

I'd put the odds of it being terrorist related pretty low. Older building, big fire afterwards, very limited damage to the surrounding buildings. Might have collapsed first, which is what caused the explosion. Debris is quite far away, but the buildings to the side aren't really damaged.

Enoch Powell's comment on the twitter thread:

"Like Syria but in the UK. Just remember if this was terrorism, not saying it was, but we ought not judge the many by the horrible actions of a few, unless they are white, males, UKIP or Christian, or if you are in America, gun owners, any of those groups you can paint broadly."

Florida school shooting survivor: "On the @CNN town hall, we had the sheriff who was virtue-signaling against the @NRA and against guns when he didn't even act properly. The armed officer outside... let my classmates die when he stood outside and waited."

It could say something about aging infrastructure or improper maintenance, like the problem we have here in the States.
But then again we are talking about Part-and-Parcelstan here

Gas mains in Europe sure blow up a lot.

I blame the Russians immediately.

Gas mains in Europe sure blow up a lot.

I see what you're getting at, but nah, it's probably not a conspiracy.

There's a much higher percentage of residential natural gas usage in Europe, and gas boilers are also a lot more popular than the air heating systems used in the US.

Dunno if American style gas furnaces are inherently safer than pressurised water systems heated by gas, but they might be. I also get the impression Americans have a less blase attitude to paying properly certified professionals to inspect their potentially explodey home appliances, whereas Brits (and our guests from the Subcontinent and Eastern Europe) tend to assume everything's fine so long as the central heating's roasty toasty - which is probably also related to the much higher percentage of owner occupancy in US households.

Still, death by gas explosion is very rare these days, down to single digits per year. It was a lot worse back in the 20th century.

Blogger Jack Amok February 25, 2018 10:46 PM

Steve, do they add Mercaptan to the natural gas in Europe so you can smell it if it's leaking?

#6 - "Owner names sound Indian, but not obviously Muslim"

So, it's Muslims vs Hindus in Leicester.

As they are discovering in Melbourne, when you import people, they bring their tribal wars with them. This is why accepting refugees from places wracked by internecine war is stupid. These 'refugees' ate the *cause* of the isery in the places they come from.

Whatever it is, DTTM: dont trust the media.

OT: 2/8; The SPLC followed after Theresa May; RooshV, ROK is now deemed a, male supermacy site by the paranoids at the LC all this talk of toxic masculinity is toxic within itself.

Blogger Dire Badger February 26, 2018 1:47 AM

'Male supremacy'?

That's like saying 'Human supremacists'
The fact that in general, men are better than women at just about everything except giving birth is patently obvious.

Hell, that's the only reason we even bother with women. Lust hooks us, but Noblesse Oblige reels us in.

THE EXPLOSION WOULD'VE BEEN MUCH WORSE IF BRITONS WERE ALLOWED TO CARRY GUNS

Blogger LP999-16 February 26, 2018 3:01 AM

4 were hurt in the explosion, please God help them.

19 Agreed, our functions are looking pretty, bearing children with our husbands, breast feeding, being good wives and mothers. Men must be willing to tell Eve to put the lustful fruit down with discretion and disallow her running the show as men lead women follow.

Again I noted at 12;54am to now 3am, I had to add exceptions to accessing INFO G News and IG Tech again, I tried this twice, why is IG news a problem but Matt's page is ok, (I dont care about soft news I prefer hard/real news) Info galactic news over other outlets.

@2 "The shop is being described as a 'Polish convenience store'"
@4 "It's a really odd choice for an isolated target.

Poland just deeply pissed off the moslem community ... by NOT playing their games!

"The head of the Polish National Security Office has said the country will not take in Muslim migrants after the latest terror attacks in Spain."

Twitter comment is interesting, but not definitive:
Strange how when a non-terrorist explosion happens we have real footage within hours. However when terror-related not one will ever really surface.

Blogger Unknown February 26, 2018 2:04 PM

The British-made gas boilers were getting revenge because the imported air-conditioners were monopolising the appliance repair industry. Heard just before the explosion: "these foreign machines come here as if they own the place and take our HVAC jobs. They need to go back. Boilers for Britain!"

"Aram Kurd, 33, of Hillary Place, Braunstone, Leicester
Hawkar Hassan, 32, of Eld Road, Coventry, originally thought to be from East Anglia
Arkan Ali, 37, of Drake Close, Oldham
The three men were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the explosion at a building in Hinckley Road on Sunday.

Kurd is the owner of the shop which exploded and spoke with reporters after the blast.

Two other men who were arrested yesterday, both from East Anglia, remain in police custody and continue to be questioned by detectives.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: "Throughout this complex investigation we have been urging journalists and members of the public not to speculate about the cause of the explosion."
