Facebook alternatives

Barron's contemplates them.
The proverbial sky seems to be falling on Facebook (FB), with founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg agreeing to finally answer questions from Congress in the coming weeks.

Lawmakers will be pushing Zuckerberg about the company's privacy controversy, but the issues go deeper for Facebook. The fallout from the Cambridge Analytica data-harvesting episode has exposed Facebook to two risks that aren't getting much attention: One is the possibility, slight as it might be, that Facebook is newly vulnerable to competition. The other very real risk is Facebook's ability to retain and recruit top talent in hypercompetitive Silicon Valley. The biggest names in the Valley routinely poach workers from one another.

First, those plucky competitors. I need not look further than my email folder. Idka, an advertising-free social network, on Wednesday announced its subscription-based platform would be free to new users through October 2018. The company, which has vowed not to sell or share user data, claims a 50% increase in new users and an 800% increase in website visits in the past week.
I wonder where all those new users came from.... Seriously, though, if you're not on Idka yet, give it a whirl. We're going to establish a new Voxiversity group there later this week.

I love Facebook. Never use it myself. My wife does. Over the past ten years or so, she has either blocked or been unfriended by half or more of her former friends or family. Turns out they are hate filled monsters. Just last night she made this comment after getting off Facebook, "XXXX is an evil, evil woman." XXXX is a close family member. XXXX is an ultra liberal who makes nice, nice to your face but reveals her true soul, a black, murderous, insanely irrational, hate-filled soul, on Facebook. Without Facebook my wife would have known XXXX's true nature. Now my wife both distrusts and avoids this woman. Yeah Facebook! Revealing the true face of liberals for over a decade.

Idka seems similar to mewe.com. Has anyone compared them?

Blogger L' Aristokrato March 29, 2018 2:24 PM

A lot of people talk about "Minds". Only ever gave it a two minute look myself, so I'm not the person to judge, but the first impression i get is that the interface seems very needlessly involved and counter-intuitive.

OT but related to soul-destroying evil:

Though the non-denial might be a true work of verbal gymnastics rarely seen.

* In a statement released on Mar. 29, after Scalfari's report garnered worldwide attention, the Vatican said:

"The Holy Father Francis recently received the founder of the newspaper La Repubblica in a private meeting on the occasion of Easter, without however giving him any interviews. What is reported by the author in today’s article [in La Repubblica] is the result of his reconstruction, in which the textual words pronounced by the Pope are not quoted. No quotation of the aforementioned article must therefore be considered as a faithful transcription of the words of the Holy Father."

Whoever had the pool for "The Pope isn't Catholic" happening before the 9th Circuit Court found the Constitution is unconstitutional wins this round.

Prohibited content, from IDKA terms: "Materials or statements that constitute unlawful utterances, statements, expressions or remarks, whether in respect of libel, privacy, unlawful discrimination or racism, sexism or otherwise". Looks like this Swedish company is fully converged and will quickly censor, like FB.

@5 Sadly, this Pope has a gift for putting his foot in his mouth up to the knee.

That's a hard pass!

Blogger Blade March 29, 2018 3:17 PM

Are you complaining that Indka doesn't host illegal content? How is that evidence of subversion?

Blogger stevev March 29, 2018 3:49 PM

Honestly, I don't know if I could educate myself to answer this question: If it took this long for suspicion that FB was mining/selling user's personal data to be confirmed, how long might it be before people start suspecting and discovering the same about Indka? Meanwhile, their privacy is just as ephemeral as it is under FB.

Blogger Garuna March 29, 2018 3:54 PM

Looks like Zuckerberg isn't gonna run for President after all.

The question is, do they apply Swedish speech laws to American users?

Blogger Aeoli March 29, 2018 4:05 PM

My guess is no, until it comes up in a big way, then yes. The best way to find out is to test their boundaries.

I nominate myself as tester, natch.

Go get 'em, Aeoli

OpenID markstoval March 29, 2018 4:31 PM

My problem is I never used Facebook or Myspace. Now, I understand Twitter. (converged bastards that they are)

I signed up for IDKA on Vox's advice a few weeks back and joined a group. I am proud to be one of the legion, but I really don't use it much.

I will try to post a comment or two over the coming weeks. What the hell, beware you other ELoE types. :-)

"Whoever had the pool for "The Pope isn't Catholic" happening before the 9th Circuit Court found the Constitution is unconstitutional wins this round."

Bro, that's been payed up the other way for like a half century already.

"Are you complaining that Indka doesn't host illegal content?"

Yes. They seem to have skipped over the part about "unlawful utterances with respect to".

What this means is, when we get Christian blasphemy laws back on the books, they'll respect them.

Blogger michimartini March 29, 2018 5:19 PM

Ok, signed up. But this doesn't have the radical and therefore sexy approach that Diaspora had, I still wish Diaspora had taken off. But I admit, I didn't put in the work and set up a pod and tried to sell it to my people. Anyone still remember how one of its founders ended up dead? With everything we know now - is it not likely that someone felt threatened by a competition to FB back then?

Blogger Jack Amok March 29, 2018 5:22 PM

I nominate myself as tester, natch.

If I was running the service and someone new signed up and immediately began pushing boundaries, I'd summarily ban them.

You won't find out anything about how they'll treat controversial subjects that come up naturally through interaction, you'll just find out how they treat trolls.

Blogger Azure Amaranthine March 29, 2018 5:26 PM

It's not trolling if you naturally guide your subjects in controversial directions... as many of us here are wont to do.

If they're going to define us all as trolls anyway, might as well find out sooner than later.

Blogger Jack Amok March 29, 2018 5:29 PM

I concur. My wife learns a lot about her "friends" in our small town this way too. FB creates quite the impression of an eco chamber among the dimwits who let their inner darkness show.

Blogger Jack Amok March 29, 2018 5:32 PM

You're not as subtle as you think you are. Any effort by a new signup to "guide" things will be as obvious as the routine hasbra trolls we get around here. Just use the service for a while and mind your manners, act like a guest of the establishment. If a bar has a "No Smoking" sign, don't pull out your vape and look around to see if the bartender is going to say anything.

Blogger Ron Winkleheimer March 29, 2018 5:37 PM

Facebook is pretty much the AOL of this moment in computing. The design made sense 14 years ago, but at some point, in the not to distant future, its going to be replaced by something more attuned to computing as it is done now. I'm thinking decentralized and open sourced. All you really need for social media is a portal and protocol for sharing data. Why should I have to upload anything to a central server, where it resides, to share cat videos?

OpenID aew51183 March 29, 2018 5:47 PM

Social media is cancer.
Speaking of which, looks like another cuckservative has not read "SJW's Always Lie".
Laura Ingraham has now added her own base to her enemies list by doing this.

Minds is good and is built to be ideologically the anti-FB.

VK is a decent Russian (gasp) FB clone that replicates both FB's UI and appearance from before it went to hell (as if that exists) around 2014. There are a lot of FB refugees on there.

Blogger VD March 29, 2018 5:52 PM

Don't be a moron. You're clearly trolling and I would advise them to ban you immediately myself.

Classic gamma delusion: "No one is clever enough to see through my completely obvious actions!"

The thing is, there is ALWAYS someone else smarter than you are.

Blogger Starboard March 29, 2018 5:53 PM

Cat videos are the best.

What I never liked about Facebook was the push to Christmas card my life. Who really cares about my new shoes, my child's 250th swim meet or that I met friends for lunch?

It has been useful for coordinating big family and class reunions, but such things are not high on my list.

Blogger Starboard March 29, 2018 5:57 PM

And yes it was fun to watch the lefties in my family clash with the conservatives, but it was only fun for a while. The bone grinding brain draining annoyance of what they whinged on about and cluttered my feed with drove me to mute most of them.

Blogger JaimeInTexas March 29, 2018 6:07 PM

Laura Ingraham apologized ... and it was not good enough.

I'm old enough to remember when "Ave Maria" reminded me of Roman Catholicism. Nowadays John Lennon's "Imagine" sums it up nicely..

Blogger Azure Amaranthine March 29, 2018 11:48 PM

"Don't be a moron. You're clearly trolling and I would advise them to ban you immediately myself."

I can't say whether or not Aeoli's talking about trolling.

I'm not. Put a little more emphasis on "natural" and a little less on "guide". I'll end up talking about controversial things sooner or later because that's my nature. Do I want to rush straight to them? No, but it's going to happen.

As for Jack, I don't have to be subtle. I just have to not be intentional.

Blogger Azure Amaranthine March 29, 2018 11:54 PM

If you actually push the boundary, well, that's just another way of saying that you stepped slightly over it, in which case, yes, banning is expected and necessary.

Either way, it would be beneficial to know which set or sets of laws we're talking about sooner before we become too invested.

Blogger Not a lefty March 30, 2018 5:25 AM

"unlawful". The law in Sweden is converged, not necessarily idka, of which I know nothing. But I do know a little about the convergence of the law in Sweden.

Blogger JCclimber March 30, 2018 12:31 PM

Of course they have to put that disclaimer in, the company is based in Sweden, surely the most converged nation in the world at the moment. Use the social media company to be social. Use political blogs to be political.

Some are so sperged out that they think everything is political and constantly troll every interaction in their lives.

The issue here is privacy and use of data. Even with a more trusted company than Facebook, don't post anything that wouldn't pass the Jumbotron test.

I've led FAR more people to the light, truth side of the political equations by open ended questions than by behaving like a troll. Although I am professional trained in doing that (part of my job), so I suppose that isn't as easy as I assume.
