Print editions: the verdict

The early reviews of the first Arkhaven comics are very good. This comes as a relief, because I'm not talking about the art, the characters, the writing, or the story, but about the physical production quality, which was the one element that was a known unknown from the very start of the entire project. We have taken a very aggressive pricing strategy, which combined with the 6.14 x 9.21 royal octavo size and the help of Ingram has enabled us to hit a $3.00 retail price with a full regular distribution discount.

Just got my Jeeves and QM today. Vox, these things are gorgeous. A little smaller than I had calculated, but absolutely beautiful. I don't think upsizing is worth it, given that this is a lovely product as is. And the coloring is amazing. That background in one panel on page 10 of Right Ho #1 is major league. Fantastic work.

I received my QM and Jeeves yesterday. The artwork is well done, with background detail to sustain the story (and in Jeeves case, add more hilarity to the upper class tweaking). The color palettes work very well for both. Dialogues boxes are good, with nice size on the "tell" boxes needed for story background. Nothing looks compressed or stretched out of shape. The smaller size (about 6 x 9 inches) is easier to pack and take places, but still large enough to handle read easily. The heavy cover is amazing - no smudges, deformation, hard to tear. Great idea. Now, about the Hildy poster ... any complaints about sexism halt at the muzzle of her weapon. She would be nearly as popular as Dynamique or Rebel.

My shipment arrived today. Couldn’t be more pleased. Beautiful work. The top trim on Jeeves was a little tight (though well within industry standards and not worth carping about), and QM was perfect. Colors, paper, binding – everything is wonderful. Bravo! You guys need to be patting yourselves on the back for hitting it out of the park this early in the game. I do notice the smaller size, but the product is definitely nicer than the average comic, and I’d be really surprised if anyone will care. It does not seem worth it to me to upsize it at greater cost. It will still rack in the comic stores just fine. Frankly, I can’t believe you can sell this for $3.00.

If you haven't picked up a copy or two yet, you can do so in the Arkhaven section of the Castalia Direct Store. Our next two print editions will be premium Dark Legion projects that will be 10x7 and priced at $6.99 for the 40-page Rebel Dead Revenge teaser and $9.99 for the 64-page Chicago Typewriter. After that, we'll get Right Ho, Jeeves #2 and Quantum Mortis: A Man Disrupted #2 out.

All four of these will be Gold Logo editions. The next two after that will be Alt★Hero #1: Crackdown and Chuck Dixon's Avalon #1: Conscience of the King, both of which will be 10x7 and $3.99. And since everyone loves Rebel, here is a panel from her behind the wheel of her Mustang from Alt★Hero #2: Falls the Hammer.

Congratulations. Make Comics Great Again!

I have Jeeves and QM, and they are beautiful. I also have eCONcomics, and I can't say enough about its genius. If you could get it into the hands of every 6th grade boy, we might save the world.

Well, that is the long term goal, is it not?

I cancelled my Amazon order and was going to wait for the gold logo editions, but now I'm jonesing to get my hands on these and see them for myself. Will they still have $2.99 on them if I order today?

Have you decided to completely give up on the $2.99/$3 price point? I know it resulted in some complications with Amazon or Ingram or the combination, but it would've been very interesting to see the effect on the industry at that price.

No, they now say $3.00. We are keeping that price point for most of the non-Alt-Hero comics. I'm working with Ingram to try to get it back down to $2.99.

When does the kindle version of Chicago Typewriter come out?

Rebel is a ginger. Is she a Nate love child?

Mustangs are very squirrelly in the tail you have to handle them right.

I'm beyond pleased that you've found a way to deliver premium quality comics for regular prices. Arkhaven is gonna kick the ass of DC and Marvel.

Blogger Dave March 18, 2018 6:34 PM

Kinda disappointed no comics art snobs have popped in yet to tell us it can't be a Mustang because of the spokes on the steering wheel or the windshield support is wrong (windscreen support for you proper Brits).

Ah, those were the days, when Alt Hero was just getting off the ground. Now it seems we're counting down the hours to seeing the first editions. A countdown clock, that's what we need, for the anticipation and excitement to build for the historic debut of the first editions.

I just got an email notification from Amazon that my Jeeves #1 cannot yet be delivered and they do not yet know the date it will be available. Is this likely to be cleared up soon?

Blogger Markku March 18, 2018 8:14 PM

Looks like they have, at least for now, just arbitrarily decided to stop selling it. I checked, there's no problem on our side. And yes, I checked through a USA-based proxy.

It should be. Ingram is aware of the problem and is trying to fix it. It's apparently a big problem and has nothing directly to do with us, just our four most recently published print editions.

Blogger Markku March 18, 2018 8:56 PM

Yeah, I heard the words "database problems" in relation to it, and that is just the thing that would cause exactly this symptom.

Awesome, I was waiting for the physical editions to come out!

Comics have been a gateway for reading. Boys used to read voraciously, now most don't even crack open a book. Manga and a few comics are popular with some. When the lines of comics catch fire they will be a portal for boys reading Castalia House books.

Blogger Bogey March 18, 2018 11:47 PM

That panel of Rebel looks amazing. Still waiting with bated breath for the super hero stuff.

Blogger Nate March 19, 2018 12:32 AM

Surely you didn't doubt Ingram

Blogger Nate March 19, 2018 12:33 AM

Also yes... Everyone loves Rebel. Say... What's Murican fir waif?

Blogger Nate March 19, 2018 12:34 AM

Waifu dammit

Blogger Jack Amok March 19, 2018 2:42 AM

What's the ETA on Rebel in print anyway? I need to convince my 11 year old daughter there's something besides Marvel.

The chirpy human tour guide took on an appropriately somber cast as she led the multispecies group through the Hall of Mourning, quietly explaining each marker to the diverse sapients from all across the Spiral Arm Confederacy (as we called it). Then they got to the moment she always dreaded. "What happened here?" "I...I don't really know. No one does. It's like a tragedy within a tragedy, that its meaning has been lost to the depths of time:"

Manga is a portal to a LOT of boys, for a lot of subjects, many of which are not good for them... I am hoping Arkhaven replaces this outlet with a much healthier alternative.

The same is true for regular comics, although this is less understood. See "Our Gods Wear Spandex" by Chris Knowles.

Blogger Wild Ape March 19, 2018 6:46 AM

@23 Me too. I would like to see Arkhaven fire up a big following and then have them reading books also. Stories are powerful and Marvel, DC, Image, IDW, etc are going down the wrong path.

Blogger Aeoli March 19, 2018 6:47 AM

Oh and Vox, if you ever want the "skinsuit" psychological phenomenon explained (for professional reasons or otherwise), let me know.

I got mine the other day, and can confirm the reviews. The overall quality is first-rate, and the price point is a bit unbelievable. And this is only the opening salvo.

The adaptation of Jeeves worked better than I thought. I has visualized something akin to the old Classic Comics, but credit to Chuck Dixon, as the characters are much more lively. I don't find Quantum Mortis too wordy, but I also read books.

There was something unexpectedly powerful about seeing actual hard copies. The infrastructure is exceeding expectations.

Blogger Triple_Scoop March 20, 2018 3:02 PM

Just got Quantum, Jeeves and eCon today. Really, really cool! I ordered the digital version of Quantum, but as usual a hard copy is more exciting. I love the format of the Quantum and Jeeves comics, it just feels "right". Quality is excellent. I think the size should be a trademark of Arkhaven. Does anyone else do this?

Thank you for dropping three at once, shipping was very reasonable. Now to read and then off to Amazon.
