Russia is the reason A Wrinkle in Time flopped

Wait, did I say RUSSIA? Oh, sorry, I meant to say that RACISM is the reason that it flopped.
'A Wrinkle in Time' Director Ava DuVernay Uses Racism to Explain Away Bad Reviews....

In an interview with Screen Rant, writer Jennifer Lee explained why she took out the Christian themes and Bible references from the book. "It wasn't removed, it was just opened up in language that wasn't exclusive, guardian angels versus stars, are they the same thing? Maybe," Lee said. She emphasized "inclusivity," saying, "Since we’re not limiting, we’re not picking some religion, but we’re saying we all feel, we can feel that you’re a part of something extraordinary and the messages are the same."

This helps explain why the film ditched the book's explicit Christian themes, trading them for vague New Age spirituality that failed to deliver the depth of the original story. Furthermore, it is the exact opposite of "inclusive" to excise all Christian historical references, even to Jesus, Copernicus, or Michelangelo.

As The Federalist's Ellie Bufkin noted, non-Christian and liberal reviewers agreed that the removal of Christianity from "A Wrinkle in Time" severely weakened the movie.
Sure, it's not the anti-Christian bigotry, the urinating all over a cherished childhood classic, or the Wakandawashing of the white characters, it's Vladimir Putin!

I mean, of course, to say that it was RACISM. Specifically, the racism of straight white Christians.

It is absolutely no surprise at all that A Wrinkle in Time flopped. Padre Pio knew that it would flop. Nostradamus knew that it would flop. There is probably a stone buried deep in a South American jungle carved with ancient Mayan hieroglyphics predicting it would flop. Even journalists who are under the vague impression that a tesseract deals with financial regulations knew eight years before it even came out that it was going to flop, because the Hollywood Values crowd hates hates hates Christianity, Christian morality, Christian values, Christians, Jesus Christ, the Bible, and God. There was never any chance that they could produce a movie that would be consistent with the core themes of the book.

What is more interesting is to ponder why Black Panther was successful whereas A Wrinkle in Time was not, given their superficially similar approaches. So, what were the salient differences?
  • Black Panther was competently told.
  • Black Panther respected the original characters.
  • Black Panther was aimed at its core market.
  • Black Panther's production team actually appears to have liked its source material.
  • Black Panther had competent set and costume design.
I suspect that Black Panther also sucked all the available "black power" enthusiasm out of the market, which probably added insult to injury to the shoddy A Wrinkle in Time performance.

Racism is real - I once brought my iced ceylon tea outside and it got warm. Racism's always there, the cause of things that are the opposite of what you want them to be.

Agreed. Good luck when "muh black hit movie" films are coming out two, three times a year. There is only so much hootin' and hollerin' even the most degenerate audience can manage.

Black panther by it's nature the characters had to be black although I'd laugh if the white washed it. Didn't see either one as my tolerance for "we was kangs" movies is zero. I agree on the anti Christian hatred but its not new and the biggest source is (((the tribe))). Doesnt help the rest of hollyweird is full of Marxists as well.

All that wakandan black power sacked some of the life out of Death Wish, too. Wanted to see it, but you know hooting and hollering would be heard three auditoriums away.

Also, BLACK PANTHER had much greater mass audience appeal because people already like movies about men in costumes punching each other.

Non-superhero SFF is a tougher sell, unless it's STAR WARS (and Disney has probably burnt up most of that franchise's appeal already) or Tolkien (New Line has done the same) or based on the latest pop culture phenomenon YA megabestseller.

AWIT might have a lot of fans of the book, but so did ENDER'S GAME, which flopped in cinemas despite being OK.

AWIT also has a cootie problem. Women will happily go see the latest men-in-tights punchathon with their husband or boyfriend, but girly movies need to make sure they can bring in those female customers, because no heterosexual man wants to see THE DIVINE SISTERHOOD OF THE YAYA TRAVELING PANTS EAT PRAY LOVE CLUB.

Looking at the posters, you'd think AWIT was a film about makeup tips for homely women from the future. But the strapline reads "Be a warrior!"

Except girls don't want to be warriors. Not even the girls who went to see HUNGER GAMES - the appeal there was seeing an attractive woman wear fabulous outfits and look cute while trying to work out which hunk she was going to pick. The PG rated violence was bait for male viewers.

Someone tell CNN it's Putin's fault. We'll have 24/7 coverage, a special counsel, and Hollywood can join UKistan in threatening Russia with war.

A future documentary about it will be titled A Wrinkle in Best Timeline.

The easiest way to apply r/K theory is to assume that leftists are driven by xenophilia and sexual indiscriminacy (if that's a word). How else than irrational love for the foreign and hatred for one's own homeland to explain getting an african movie right but a movie about white christians wrong?

This, and the fact that MCU movies have a built-in audience. Even a no-name MCU hero that no one cares about can pull in a decent box office (see Ant-Man/Dr. Strange/Thor1). DC can put out a stinker (like Suicide Squad), but pretty much anything with the Marvel stamp on it is going to do well because of their track record.

Then there's the "black people wanting to see a black superhero movie" and "white-guilt-addled white people wanting to prove to everyone how not-racist they are by seeing a black superhero movie" and the people who really just don't think about such things and simply wanted to see an action movie.

And I'm sure there are also people who genuinely liked it and wanted to see it again. There's no accounting for taste, after all.

The need to be inclusive that is dominating Hollywood/Disney leads simply to bland. It's the equivalent of not everyone likes their food the same way and therefore if we remove all of the seasoning, it will be acceptable to everyone. Yet, it's acceptable to no one or very few.

Ender's Game partially suffered from one of the first SJW social media swarms. How dare Card oppose homosexual marriage. The other problem was the film changed things it didn't need to and yet stuck slavishly to the book at other points. It's not a bad movie but it ended up being pedestrian.

I hadn't read that book since I was about 8, long before I was a Christian. I re-read it last night. I did recall a few details about it while I was reading, but mostly it was like reading it for the first time. Removing Christianity from it makes it an entirely different story.

OT

I go NRO these infrequent days to be amused. Here's Jonah and Jay today:

"In his column, Jonah writes that Bannon’s “blood-and-soil nationalism and racially tinged populism” is at odds with “the best and highest ideals of conservatism” and with America.

“Let him stay in Europe and hand out torches,” says Jonah. “His un-American shtick has no place here.”

Standing alongside Marine Le Pen, rallying the National Fronters, Bannon said, “Let them call you racists. Let them call you xenophobes. Let them call you nativists. Wear it as a badge of honor. Because every day, we get stronger and they get weaker.”

To be a conservative is to be called a racist. I know this — I have lived it — and so do all other conservatives. It is one of the most appalling, most painful, and most infuriating things about being a conservative. Probably the most."

"[B]ecause the Hollywood Values crowd hates hates hates Christianity, Christian morality, Christian values, Christians, Jesus Christ, the Bible, and God."

You know, for as much as I now dislike MovieBob, he once made an interesting point about Hollywood and Biblical movies. His point was that Hollywood used the Bible stories to get around the censorship of the early film regulations. They were free to show violence and nudity as long as it came from the Bible.

It's less like history repeats, and more like it never stopped.

The costumes and make-up are just terrible. I loved the novel and can't bear to have it ruined. The casting of the mixed race actress, does not bother me and I think Oprah is a fine actress, but the look of the characters is very off putting.

'Panther ended in the black.

There is an ironic parallel of Wrinkle with "The Golden Compass" that equally removed the overt militant Atheism. It wasn't good, but it was pretty and parts of the storyline were interesting.

I haven't/won't see Wrinkle barring some reason. I probalby need to read the book.

If I knew Oprah was in it, I would have not seen it several times rather than just once.

Other than wishing all the White women that supported her and made her a star for many years would just die, so the wonderful multicultural younger generation can take over, and supplying Weinstein with cute young innocents to rape, I was wondering what the real hard-core stuff will be on her. She seems too smart to hang out with the Marina, Spirit Cooking set, at least in public. Yet, she has to pay her dues on some level.

She discussed it with the manager and he pulled them off the shelf. She doesn’t think the store knowingly did this, but it is vile that a card maker would create Easter Cards that belittle our Lord and Saviour. A quick search on the internet showed that there are many more disgusting anti-Christian cards out there.

Now consider that DuVernay at one point was being considered to helm Black Panther, or at least that’s what I remember back when it was in development. And reports from the Panther set mentioned a constant Christian testimonial occurred on set every day (how much of that we would consider more Churchian is a guess, but staying away from New Age BS has to count for something).

I need to do some more research into why Oprah was fired by the former Westinghouse affiliate here in Baltimore back in the early 80s. You don’t get to wield such media influence out of Chicago a couple of years after that and somehow manage to leech people for 30+ years, just because of your name. Ironic that that particular affiliate was tied to ABC at the time, and here she is involved in another clunker.

There comes a point where if something sucks, no amount of crying racist/sexist/bigot is going to excuse it. These ladies need to realize that they’re more likely just horrible people, and the masses should be allowed to say so.

I stopped counting all the times a show or movie featured a portrayal of God, or an esteemed judge played by a black - or a woman, or a black woman. Sick to death of it.

Morgan Freeman, stick a fork in it already. And lemme guess - Oprah played an all knowing fountain of love, wisdom and goodness. Just a guess.

I heard about a new Age crapfest of a book called The Shack wherein God Almighty is found to be a black woman living in the renovated cottage that used to be a shack where the murder of a child took place. Oh and her friend I guess is an Asian woman, (the gardener) - she's the Holy Spirit. And yeah, they just HAD to make it into a movie.

I didn't know what a tesseract was, so I looked it up. Square is to cube as cube is to tesseract. More importantly, it was the energy cube in the Avengers.

Interesting little side note from the article on the Tesseract: Loki returned to Asgard and destroyed the planet. I didn't see that movie, so I didn't know.

Loki is not an Asgardian. He was allowed inside, treated as an equal, and destroyed everything they'd created.

They should have sent him back.

Hollywood has always managed to squeeze out an occasional all-Negro film. This is by no means new or original. They were produced for a small targeted audience and that is what they had.

For some unknown reason, there are people who now believe that such movies, with single demographic casts, are supposed to appeal to a wider audience. They do not.

Add to the usual lack of interest in black-themed movies the fact that the country (and the audience) is suffering from a sad case of Negro fatigue. Obama has contributed to this...but I would also add certain black militants like Oprah, Louis Farrakhan, Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson, and some of the more militant types in BlackLivesMatter, the New Black Panther Party, NAACP, and certain noisy politicians. They have made it difficult for anyone to simply watch a movie for itself....without having to sit through the anti-white preaching and vilification.

Blogger GithYankee March 16, 2018 7:36 AM

I absolutely agree with Vox's rundown of Black Panther. I found nothing objectionable about it; it wasn't the Seventh Seal obviously but was fun enough, competently told. If anything, it was a little boring.
Black cinema has always been successful in US, as black people see the movies much as they see the Democratic party. Racial bloc activism is powerful. In some ways, the (to me) odious Tyler Perry movies, and Maxine Waters' long career are the best btfo to the Liberalists possible. They show artistic and political quality and standards DO NOT MATTER to a confident and united people.

Actually, girls watching HUNGER GAMES related to the struggle to survive in a society that pitted kids against each other, and to the main characters' attempt to overthrow an unjust government without becoming as bad as the people they replaced. (The costume-and-romance junk was of interest only to the characters who ran the game show; the movie--like the book--was making fun of today's frivolous entertainment culture.) Teenage girls (and boys) are ready to contemplate serious ethical and political issues. Let's not sell them short!
