That suspicious impartiality

It's rather remarkable that the journalists attempting to attack the credibility of Russia Today don't realize what they are implicitly admitting about the BBC, Sky TV, CNN, and other Western media organizations:
Staffed in London mainly by Western journalists, a cursory viewing of RT might suggest a respectable international broadcaster in the mould of the BBC, Sky and CNN. It broadcasts daily, a mix of news bulletins, talk shows — on which many peers and MPs, including Mr Corbyn, have appeared — and documentaries.

Its viewing figures in the UK are minuscule (560,000 people tune into RT at some time during the week, compared with 6.1 million for Sky and 10.4 million for BBC News), but its output is amplified by YouTube channels and social media feeds which cater for an audience of ‘metrosexuals and bums’, according to one rival Russian channel.

And while it is true that many stories are delivered impartially, this selective impartiality appears to be a strategic ploy. According to Ben Nimmo of the Atlantic Council, an American international affairs think-tank: ‘[RT’s] job in quiet times is to build up an audience, so it can propagandise to them in crises. You must not confuse RT with bona fide journalism: not all its output is propaganda, but its purpose is.’

Whenever Russia interests are at stake — as in Ukraine, Crimea and Syria — it pumps out programmes, videos and tweets that almost invariably toe the Moscow line.
How terrible of them to reliably be impartial on most issues, only to stick to a narrative on matters important to Russia. This is very different from the BBC, Sky TV, and CNN, where "bona fide journalism" means all propaganda all the time.

The purpose of all media is propaganda. It is all rhetoric. It is intended to persuade, not to simply inform. The big difference is that Russia Today doesn't feel any need to constantly uphold the neoliberal world order's narrative all the time.

Crosstalk on RT is top quality content. Our media constantly shoves globo-homo lies in our faces so it is natural people would seek out media alternatives

Knowing why they lie to you is the necessary filter for understanding what they are lying about. Experience will tell you what the lie is, provided you are not lying to yourself.

MendoScot's heuristic for news appreciation.

The legacy media has morphed into the old Soviet media.

As Elena Gorokhova described it: “The rules are simple: they lie to us, we know they're lying, they know we know they're lying, but they keep lying to us, and we keep pretending to believe them.”

RT earned its niche by being believable some of the time. The powers-that-be don't know what to do with that kind of competitor.

I spent much of 2010 in a German port city on the Baltic Coast. I had cable tv the entire time, but RT was the ONLY English language news television that was available. No SkyNews, no CNN, no MSNBC, no CNBC, no Fox....nada.

RT is very good at reporting any news from the USA that would reflect negatively on this country. (I know, they all do that now.) So they would be very good at covering the crime beat and police blotter, any riots or demonstrations, shootings, racial incidents, and the like.

Our own media simply refuses to report such news, since it does not fit the Leftist Liberal narrative. My best sources for US news have become the European (British) media. The US media seems to take their cues from People and Us magazines. Mostly celeb news and the Kardashians.

I had a friend who spent several years in Italy studying art restoration. He repeatedly mentioned how the news there was so much more complete and timely than the drivel we got back in the states.

Seems that these days, both telling the truth and hearing the truth are thought crimes.

If I want complete reporting on a good range of subjects I check RT. I notice they are awfully liberal on social subjects outside Russia.

Way back when, there was Buckley's "Firing line".
I perfer the Trump Apprentice "You're Fired!"

Dialectic has been unhomed in the MSM.

Those conniving little tricksters! Don't they know telling the truth could undermine the entire business?! Only one thing to do... double down and lie some more. It's what the people want!

Blogger Long Live The West March 21, 2018 11:39 PM

And while we're on the topic of the media, it's amusing how they're trying to pass Q off as the 'biggest fake news scam ever'. They always follow a simple three step process. Ignore, discredit, call the target a (insert random derogatory term here). Without fail.

Hopefully people are waking up to the media enough that the mere fact that they're trying to discredit Q will lead people to trust it. People need to wake up, and time is running out.

In other news the latest Darkstream appears to be missing.

Was it a big announcement? Or did Vox accidentally trigger the censorbots while describing how heroes must take "action" in a "crisis"?

Western liberals (?) who praises Russia Today today are very alike Western liberals who praised Comintern Radio in 1930s – the difference is that Comintern Radio worked for international empire of Stalin, but Russia Today works for Putin's oligarchy. All of them (as CNN etc) are just a propaganda, of course.
Real information a man can receive by comparing different point of views (different sorts of propaganda).

international affairs think-tank

read those words again. That's double speak for Globlists screw everyone.

Follow that stinking NGO grant money. Find the source of their money and that explains exactly why they are doing an RT hit piece.

RT is like a really good SF novel. It may be fiction in parts but it has a very solid foundation of facts and reality.

BBC Etc are like pink SF. Doesn’t even stand up to basic grammar. Never mind anything factual.

Blogger Amy March 22, 2018 5:28 AM

Let’s play!

[RT’s] job in quiet times is to build up an audience, so it can propagandise to them in crises. You must not confuse RT with bona fide journalism: not all its output is propaganda, but its purpose is.’

You must not confuse CNN with bona fide journalism

...MSNBC
...FoxNews
...NYT
...WaPo

Fun game.

Also, Apple auto corrected “bona fide” to Boba Fidel. Good times.

Look, you're a Ukie, and so you hate the Russkie. I get that. But expecting the entire world to join in on your hatred of Russia is, frankly, insane.

Especially when Russia was populated by the people who had a much lower tolerance for Mongol tyranny than the people who chose to remain near Kiev. It was the Prince of Muscovy who sent the Khan's tax-collectors' heads back without their bodies.

A lot of the old Firing Line episodes are (were?) up on YouTube.
I urge everyone that's never watched them to do so. This way, you can see how Buckleyite Conservatism morphed over the years.
You'll be surprised that there are a number of good things in the older episodes, and also see where their original horrible narratives were born.
An interesting study for some of the younger guys, I'd think.
You also won't much recognize early Buckleyism with latter day NeoConnery.
Of course, I tend to think of that as being more an artifact of the time period, rather than the deeply held beliefs of WFB.
This is, around the time he was drumming out the last of the Birchers, mind you.

Blogger Zeroh Tollrants March 22, 2018 10:06 AM

Can I ask what's going on with that? I don't watch television & have been a little MIA from social media for the last week or so & last night I got on both Gab & Twitter & saw passing mentions of Q & had no idea what was going on. Someone said something about Q being arrested? Wha...?

Blogger Ceerilan March 22, 2018 1:04 PM

The MSM feels safe bad-mouthing RT because they don't know how much damage they've already done to their own brands in the eyes of the American and British publics. What they have wrought in the last two decades may even come back to haunt them centuries later.

Blogger Dirk Manly March 22, 2018 6:28 PM

Considering that the John Birchers were proven correct in over 90% of their predictions, and the Buckley and his acolites have been proven wrong in damned near everything.... the drumming out of the John Birchers (because COCKTAIL PARTY GUEST LISTS!!!) *WAS* the very foundation of NeoConnery and Cuckservatism.
