Behavioral scaling and immigration

From Sociobiology: The New Synthesis by E.O. Wilson

The availability and quality of food can also move groups along behavioral scales. Well-fed honeybee colonies are very tolerant of intruding workers from nearby hives, letting them penetrate the nest and even take supplies. But when the same colonies are allowed to go without food for several days, they attack every intruder at the nest entrance. In general, primates also become increasingly intolerant of strangers and aggressive toward other group members during times of food shortages.

I tend to doubt it is a coincidence that this unprecedented and uncharacteristic openness to immigration and disregard for national borders is entirely unrelated to the fact that the West is fatter and more overfed than ever before in human history.

With societies, as with individuals, lean is mean, hard, and dangerous. Fat is soft, weak, and defenseless.

In other words, when the lean times come again, it will get very ugly between the natives and the invaders. Jane Goodall, if she is still alive, can once again be horrified.

Socialism and Liberalism will only occur in lands of plenty. When there is plenty to go around, people tend to be overly generous. Karl Marx also understood this point, which is exactly why he insisted that capitalism is the precondition for socialism. Where else is abundance to come from? The wealth created by capitalism actually creates the Leftist Liberals, who seek to destroy it.

Take away the abundance and plenty and people stop being socialists rather quickly. Stop feeding the bastards and they soon become self-employed capitalists.....bandits or farmers.

Also, Julius Ceasar (from memory): That Cassius has a lean and hungry look, give me fat men, and soft, who sleep well at night.

Which is why history tends to be cyclical.

The dangerous thing is that a big part of todays "wealth" is a kind of imaginary, debt based wealth that can dissapear rather quickly, like we saw ten years ago.

The next 2008 is going to be very ugly indeed.

Socialists ARE ALREADY BANDITS (although some are less effective bandits than others).

Their "academics" have covered this for 100 years in their books and writings.
Of course, didn't Plato say don't feed the Slaves Meat??...

All governments are just Stationary Bandits.

We tolerate them as long as their take is not too large because if the really bad guys come along we could lose everything.

Another reason why a person needs a real community around them that they are part of and support. For many reading here that means a local Christian Church.

Dr Penman makes the same argument but in greater scope in his book Biohistory - Decline and Fall of the West

Food scarcity and it’s cultural equivalent, religious fasting is one of the key pillars, alongside chastity and discipline of children that the West was built on.

Not unlike Rome though, that which has brought about our success has ushered in our destruction.

It’s not all pessimism though, Dr Penman thinks there’s a solution but it’ll start with Christianity and for people to do the science.

Blogger Christopher B April 02, 2018 5:55 PM

I've often thought liberals have the 'never let a crisis go to waste' thing backwards. The New Deal in the US was actually strongly opposed and partially rolled back. Few leftist revolutions were met with open arms the way US troops liberating Europe were. People in crisis see change as a threat, not an opportunity.

Blogger Johnny April 02, 2018 6:16 PM

>> In California, Upton Sinclair, who had run as a Socialist for governor in 1932 and received 50,000 votes, organized the End Poverty in California (EPIC) movement, which won a majority in the 1934 Democratic gubernatorial primaries... large leftist third parties existed only in Minnesota, New York, and Wisconsin,...

There is nothing about hard times that shuts down an enthusiasm for socialism. If it is anything it is the other way. To put it crassly, FDR shut it down with his handout stuff. But the rest is accurate. Things do become more harsh. From too generous to potentially too punitive is the usual thing.

You want your tax cattle fat.

When the Prodigal returns, the fatted Calf suffers.

Blogger Valtandor Nought April 02, 2018 6:48 PM

Johnny, the point is not socialism, but “charity” towards outsiders, which will diminish in truly hard times.

Having said that, support for socialism depends on a belief that there exists in society a group of rich people, who should be forced to be more generous towards their fellow man, and of which the rank and file socialist is of course not a member (and the socialist will therefore benefit from their new-found generosity). This notion is more difficult to sustain in truly hard times, when it is easier to see that most everyone is struggling to get by, but in hard times some will indeed turn to brigandage to get what they can no longer procure by the ballot box.

Perhaps we are talking past each other in that I agree in general. The thing is they often frame socialism as generosity, and often it is not in that they vote the money to themselves.

In more modern societies what hard times often produce is discontent with the established order, and a general desire for someone or something to blame.

Blogger Dirk Manly April 02, 2018 7:54 PM

Yes, the argument needs to be corrected and thrown in their face:

"STEALING my money so that you can give it away and receive accolades for *yourself*, as if it was your own money that you are handing out is NOT generosity, it is both Theft AND Lying."

Blogger weka April 02, 2018 8:30 PM

@22. If you are not a citizen, you don't vote.
Better: if you don't pay taxes, you don't vote.
Better still: if you recieve welfare or a government salary, you don't vote.
And best of all: if you don't have 100K of taxable assets declared, you don't vote.

Though refusing congresscritters from sanctury states has to be backed by refusing their judiciary as well.

no, Debt is the Inverse of Wealth / Capital.

it forms the basis of what we now use for "currency", yes, but that doesn't make it a store of Wealth.

evidenced by the fact that it is the overtly stated goal of the Federal Reserve to destroy the Wealth you hold at a rate of not less than 2% per annum.

as another example, Venezuela has plenty of cash money. and natural resources.

what they haven't got any of is actual Wealth. which is why they're starving in the streets.

Blogger Crew April 02, 2018 10:38 PM

@26: You don't want to use that scheme in CA. Lots of illegals probably do have at least $100K in taxable assets if you include property taxes.

The spree irony is that we are moving further into a Grand Solar Minimum. Food shortages are inevitable along with a lot of social discontent. Buckle up, the party is starting.

doesn't the lender hold title until the mortgage is paid off?

if you require the property owner to hold the title free and clear ... that drops most of the US population out of the voting pool.

not that i'm necessarily against that.

The point being that if you actually held wealth, the Fedres wouldn't be able to destroy it without ever either touching or altering what you actually hold in any way.

The purchaser holds title, but it will have a lean on it at the register of deeds office. Land contracts are a legal exception, but they are no longer common and now treated like the buyer is the owner anyway.

Wynn, if you read this, take this with the kindness I intend, and not as a barbed comment.

Often you make a comment with no reference to the comment you're responding to. Quite often it's hard to fully understand what you're trying to say without the context.

Your comments would be much more valuable if you included a clip of the comment you're referring/replying to.

Amen Amen! By Vox's expected dissolution of the U.S. into unhappy ethno-states circa 2030 -- we will ALSO have hit the projected nadir of the NEXT ICE AGE! (2030 or 2031 depending on the math.)

They're forecasting Chicago weather in Atlanta -- guess what THAT will do to the 'breadbasket agricultural' lands?! (Oh, and "they" are Russian, Chinese, AND European/American scientists who are trying to debunk the stupid money grab that is global warm....er... climate chan.... er .... climate disrupt...? Uh. What are they calling it this week?!)

Hey, maybe THAT will 'encourage' the up-from-the-south migration of vermin to return south? When the crops are all gone,t he locusts move on? Not gonna be a happy and healthy movement, though.

It's not a coincidence that the strongest support for Trump and for the wall come from places where the median wage can stagnated or declined.
