Secession in South Carolina

One hopes the second attempt will be more successful, and more peaceful, than the first:
South Carolina debated seceding from the Union more than 150 years ago, one of the opening salvos of the Civil War. Now, the topic has come up again, amid a national debate over firearms and gun rights.

A trio of state House Republicans on Thursday quietly introduced a bill that would allow lawmakers to debate seceding from the U.S. “if the federal government confiscates legally purchased firearms in this State.”

Rep. Mike Pitts, the measure’s chief sponsor, acknowledged Friday in an interview with The Associated Press that the bill has no chance of passage this year but pledged to continue to raise the issue based on what he described as a defense of the Bill of Rights.

“Without a Bill of Rights, our nation is not what it is,” Pitts said. “I see a lot of stuff where people even talk about totally repealing the Second Amendment, which separates us from the entire rest of the world.”
It would serve as a serious warning. However, it would be wiser if they seceded over the federal government settling aliens in their state. That's much more likely to present the people of South Carolina with serious problems than another federal military conquest.

If nothing else it pushes the Overton Window. If they are not going to bring California to heel in a defacto rebellion, I wonder if they would try South Carolina in a declared separation.

Blogger MickDundee April 08, 2018 1:17 PM

The party of Nikki Haley and Lindsey Graham lol.

South Carolina should allow Israel to simply run it outright as some sort of wholly-owned dominion or satrap.

Blogger Akulkis April 08, 2018 1:24 PM

@Brick Hardslab

Trump won't make any such declaration about South Carolina, and if Congress doess, he won't send military or even policing forces to enforce any Congressional treachery of this type.

If the blasted South Carolinians had kept their itchy trigger fingers from spazzing, we might have dodged a lot of the First Civil War.
So God in Heaven, let those hot headed fools keep their tempers under control.

Side note, SC is 66% white. So the invasion is already well underway.

Blogger Stg58/Animal Mother April 08, 2018 1:28 PM

Last thing they'd consider is over illegal aliens. This is the Land o Lindsey, after all .

OpenID markstoval April 08, 2018 1:45 PM

This is great news.

Perhaps nothing comes of this, but at least some people are starting to talk about leaving the union. We need to break this empire up into many pieces with each piece being a real nation.

I think a small nation like South Carolina would stand a good chance of expelling all the invaders and having a real emigration policy. They might even be able to claim that Christianity is the religion of their nation.

See, this is how you test the waters, as it were. Keep bringing up the issue of secession should the gubmint get a little too pushy...you know, like they always do.

Remind them that they're not all that, after all. Still, Vox definitely has a point over the illegals. I wish they were as forthcoming with that issue as with this one.

If I recall correctly, some interesting tidbits I learned from S.C. Gwynne's excellent biography on Stonewall Jackson, "Rebel Yell":

-Stonewall Jackson spoke fluent Spanish.
-Jackson started a Sunday school for black children.
-Jackson himself was kind (but disciplinary) to his own slaves, so much so that potential slaves would always hope he bought them.
-Lincoln was willing to look the other way on the issue of slavery had the South come willingly back into the union, mostly because of the devastation on both sides that was going on. It really wasn't worth it. (Contrast this with the slave-freeing pedestal SJWs always put him on.)

Because of all this, Stonewall Jackson's visage in the form of statues must come down. Or something. Because reasons.

There was a movement some years ago, similar in concept to the Free State Project, to get conservative Christians to move to South Carolina to gradually transform it into a quasi-theocracy. I don't know if secession was an immediate goal, but it certainly would be interesting to see.

Kalo Pascha! Christ is risen!

"Flimsy Lindsey the soggy graham-cracker?"

Considering Miss Lindsey, Trey Gowdy, and Nikki Haley, it's hard not to make the case that South Carolina is one of the more effete Southern states.

@Ransom Smith
66% white is fairly high by historical standards for S.C.

Blogger OGRE April 08, 2018 2:42 PM

I figured it was a matter of time till this happened. Gun control would be one of the few triggers (sorry) for getting some states to want out. I know that in my state of West Virginia there'd be no chance in hell we'd let the feds come in and take our guns away; we'd immediately secede. That might not sound plausible to those of you not familiar with the culture here, but I assure you any attempt to impose a gun confiscation on this state would result in armed resistance from both the citizens and the state government.

Mississippi was only 46% White antebellum. There were 350000 whites and 430000 blacks.

Blogger Phat Repat April 08, 2018 3:37 PM

Yeah, seems you haven't been to SC in a while. It's rather dark; may as well be its own state now. Drive through and you will see the cesspool it has become. I do it regularly; won't spend a dime there.

Blogger Skyler the Weird April 08, 2018 3:43 PM

In 1860 SC there were Whites 291,300 Blacks 412,320. The White Confederates were roughly 38% of the population back then.

Don't forget either that in 2016, Greg Abbott and Rick Snyder were calling for a convention of states.

It wasn't really covered too much in the news, but it was still happening.

Things may get interesting.

I admit that this issue has become the last resort and touchstone for certain conservatives in this country, but I never bought into it.

First, I do not have a problem with the Constitution we have. The fact that it is twisted and mangled and distorted looks bad, but there is no change anyone could propose to cause the Media and the present politicians (and the judiciary) to stop doing that. The solution to lawlessness is not more laws. We have plenty of laws. What we lack is the Rule of Law and effective consistent enforcement.

Second, I do not trust the media or the current crop of politicians (or the judiciary) to re-write or change the Constitution. They are neither wise nor intelligent enough to write the supreme law of the land and they have shown a willingness to abuse their authority and power. They are Left partisan enough to want to. They are corrupt enough to be influenced by money. They are filthy and partisan and disloyal to the public. I would not trust any of them to park my friggin car.

Third, there are too many problems in this country to safely attempt a constitutional convention. WE have been invaded by Third World idiots for decades and they will most certainly insist on having a seat at the table when the Constitution is changed. The Media and the current politicians will fold to them (and other minority groups) like a cheap suit and spark a contest to see who can pander the most. In the end, the tiniest voice at the constitutional convention will be the historic American population and it will be shouted down and out-voted on every issue and motion. If that does not send a chill down your spine and make your trigger finger itch, you do not have one.

Too many West Virginians (and Western Virginians) use those semiautomatic rifles to put food on the table every winter. There's no way in hell they'll give them up.

Enforce the current constitution and we don't need to change it. Don't enforce the constitution, and no change will help.

The constitutional convention fetish begins with the fantasy that if we could only get the right magic words on the magic parchment, government corruption would magically end.

OpenID Sidehill Dodger April 08, 2018 10:06 PM

The last thing I would want is a Constitutional Convention. Who knows what they would come up with; I like the Constitution we have just fine.

I think the U.S. is going to come apart sooner rather than later. There's really no reason it has to be individual states; blocs of states would make more sense. For example, Texarcoma, composed of Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma would make a reasonable political unit. On the other hand, California will probably split up into a bunch of nutty little provinces at war with each other.

None of the original 13 states changed their name after the Revolution and none of the 11 Confederate states changed the state name after they left the Union. I doubt South Carolina would change their name.

"Rambam" is shorthand for "Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimonides" if my memory serves me correctly. Some medieval pharisee. Quite a fitting nickname if your goal is to annoy the SDL.

A much better idea would be to declare a state of invasion, citing the unchecked "illegal immigration", and then demanding that the federal government send troops as per Article 4, Section 4 of the Constitution (note that this is a non-optional guarantee/obligation for the federal government to defend the states against invasion).
