The nonexistent principles of Never Trump

Kurt Schlichter tears into the pious frauds who, despite their proclamations of high principle, have proven to be every bit as unprincipled as we always figured they were:
Where are your principles in the face of the gross injustices of the last few days? A federal judge who was nearly appointed Bill Clinton’s attorney general and who officiated at Soros’s wedding ordered Hannity’s information disclosed, but that was cool with you. After all, Sean Hannity is so…oh well, I never!

Principles that depend on who is asserting them aren’t principles. They are poses.

If you actually adhered to them, your principles would have you shrieking, not cheering. A bunch of Hillary-donating feds should not be allowed to randomly pillage through privileged materials looking for a crime. No, the crime-fraud exception does not mean that the feds can just take all your stuff, read through it, and decide if some happens to fall into that narrow exception and leak the rest. But hey, why let some principles get in the way of a good laugh at the expense of one of those Trump people?

Gosh, it’s almost like your talk of principles was just…talk.
Schlichter is correct. There are no Never Trump principles. As a matter of fact, there are no conservative principles, because conservatism is not, and has never been, a coherent ideology. It is, ultimately, a reactive, defensive pose.

That's the strategic problem with conservatism. It literally can't win. It can't go on the offense, because it has no objectives. And Never Trump is conservatism with cancer.

UPDATE: They were always frauds from the start.
Former presidential candidate Evan McMullin owes his former campaign staff members tens of thousands of dollars and most believe he has no intention of ever paying them, a former campaign worker tells The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Right before McMullin’s failed bid for president in 2016 as the conservative alternative to President Donald Trump, the campaign was inundated with debt. The disastrous fiscal situation was a combination of frivolous spending by McMullin and his campaign manager Joel Searby, according to the former staffer.

McMullin received news weeks before Election Day 2016 about how dire the campaign’s finances were, and he had “no remorse” and said “I have qualms about this thing ending badly in debt,” the former staffer claimed. McMullin’s cavalier attitude towards the campaign’s spending struck many as a surprise, particularly because he billed himself as a fiscal conservative, he added.
It is simply delicious to think of all the harrumphing bow-ties shedding furious tears over the way they were stiffed by their fine, principled fiscally conservative candidate who was only running out of his deep sense of outraged honor.

Agree 100%. This was infuriating to watch - I'm old enough to remember that whole wretched affair in 1993. The Dems and their Propaganda Press bootlicks were clearly intent on a fishing expedition. And do a little doxxing.

The VP of sales at a company I worked for in 2009 told me this, but I was not far enough along to get it.

He told me "conservatives can't win. All they can do is yell stop!"

And yet, if you look at the closing line of the article, Kurt still considers himself a conservative.

Maybe one day he will come around...

Blogger Hammerli280 April 19, 2018 7:33 PM

BTW, this is why we need to throw the Buckleyites out...and into a telephone pole. Because their notion of "conservative" was "surrender on terms". The same tactic the West used against the Soviets prior to the advent of Reagan.

Kindly note that once Reagan put the squeeze on the Soviets, their whole ramshackle empire came apart in less than a decade. I suspect we can do the same to the Left.

It's going to be a steady shift. Most of my friends who are waking up to the new reality still call themselves conservatives. And they're young and relatively flexible. Give it time.

I like to think of conservatism as friction. You can't go anywhere with friction. All it does is slow you down in whichever direction you're going.

Blogger Ceerilan April 19, 2018 7:51 PM

I must have missed it when Sean Hannity's information was revealed by court order...when/why was this done? Also, shouldn't we celebrate it by ruthlessly using it against left wing journos?

Blogger Hammerli280 April 19, 2018 7:53 PM

I suspect the term "conservative" will remain. But the meaning will shift significantly. The old "stand astride the train tracks shouting 'Stop!'" is as dead as the dinosaurs.

Never thought I would see Schlichter go after his old camp like this.

He's been on the precipice for a while. I think what finally did it was when they raided Trump's lawyer's office and the reaction by NEVERTRUMPers.

It's an area (attorney client) that Schlichter knows really well and it started to lay things bare. When the NEVERTRUMPers cheered Hannity being exposed - and you really need to hear the courtroom episode that allowed it to believe how bad it was - it finally made it clear their principles were poses.

Apparently, in the courtroom, CNN's lawyer interjected from the spectator seats and asked to approach the bench. He wasn't even part of either team and was allowed to have a sidebar with the judge. Only after did the judge approve exposing Hannity as a client.

When I read this article yesterday, I immediately noticed the use of one of Vox's keywords used to describe Conservatism.

I wonder how many mainstream media lurkers Vox has for this blog and his Darkstreams.

@Hammerli280

The squeeze is being put on the European Union.
1. The Eastern European nations are solidly nationalist.
2. Nationalist/eurosceptic parties are growing in strength in the other European countries.
3. Trump in his own way is putting a squeeze on the EU--his economic policies make US more attractive than the EU for capital.

The EU empire will collapse like the Soviet empire.

Blogger tublecane April 19, 2018 9:16 PM

Their single, abiding quality is that they oppose Trump, wherever that may take them. Which feels like a principle to NeverTrumpers, but actually is the opposite of what most people mean by the term.

You can see this in the way no matter what Trump does, they rationalize it as part of his evil scheme to...do something. Enrich his family at the expense of the Republic, conquer the world, or whatever. In their minds, this is refusing to be seduced by a malign conspiracy. In actuality, it's just animus against the man.

It saddens me to think conservatives were always like this. I find it more comforting to think Trump merely brings it out in them. And of course "not all conservatives are like that," because plenty are Trumpers. Just not the ones leading the movement.

Blogger tublecane April 19, 2018 9:26 PM

By the way, I recommend for a good laugh perusing articles and tweets by people like Kristol, McMuffin, Boot, Rubin, even ones who somewhat have their heads screwed on straight but are evil, like Frum. And to a lesser extent people like Shapiro.

They're as off the wall as Coulter or Alex Jones throwing a fit the night Trump bombed Syria, only with pseudo-sophistication and less hysteria. Just an unending stream of grasping, gently revolving bowtie nonsense.

Don't stay under too long, however. The abyss stares back.

Off in the hinterland a conservative is often just somebody who is passive. The current crop of conservatives in Washington are just another kind of con man. What pains me the most is the amount of damage they are willing to do to the rest of us to get whatever particular thing they want.

Some people don't like the term alt-Right, so it is a branding issue. Conservatism seeks to preserve Traditional values (note the Cucks don't, they just want well paid think tank and NR jobs), but didn't have a problem once the walls were breached.

(Also note that Egg McMuffin can't be bothered with the monthly FEC reports - I hope they throw the book at him for "not playing by the rules", as well as being in debt).

Conservatism has an analogy in that America has been defended by two oceans so doesn't know how to throw out an invading army that isn't an immediate threat. If a leftist did a house-to-house seizure of guns, they would react. But it is like mythical frog in boiling water. They are bringing in hispanics and muslims to eventually vote, and using pity, charity, fairness, and suggestions of racism the same way cuckservatives do.

Europe should have had a better memory. France has had to have the USA come there and push the Germans back to their homeland twice last century, and they had to do so with the Algerans. Germany is having the last laugh with the Jews as the Muslims want them exterminated and no matter how much "death to Jews" they say they aren't covered under the anti-Nazi laws. Italy has its problems, including CHINESE illegal immigrants making the upscale brands

The Alt-Right is militant offensive Traditionalism. Standing athwart history yelling "Fire!" instead of "Stop!".

But that was the problem with the Cuckservatives. They could stand athwart whatever yelling anything, but they would not act, would not fight. And instead of purging moderates destroying tradition, they purged actual Conservatives over unrelated issues (Trade, Israel).

The Alt-Right also realizes that it is currently irrelevant to worry about much else until the disease is amputated (they must go back) and the anti-Western Civilization infrastructure (mainly anti-Christendom, and judaeo-Christendom is anti-) is completely destroyed and the fields thoroughly salted so it won't grow back.

(The alt-Right like Libertarians they tend to talk about how to implement Utopia more than how to achieve it; shut up and run for city council or better yet, the school board).

Only when our enemies are burning piles of corpses can we rebuild a civilization, and as far as I can tell, even with the fake and lite, we agree on a great majority how it should work.

Blogger Robert Divinity April 20, 2018 9:14 AM

The McMuffin story nearly is a perfect thing.

Eggs is a pretty standard cuck. Almost all of the public cucks are grifters and beggars, depending on horny vibrants to screw their wives (or, in Eggs' case, him) and ignorant patrons to subsidize their scribblings, cruise vacations and you know full well their housing, food and drink. They are too despicable to be in the public square, and as the Cuck Apocalypse deepens hopefully they will fade into obscurity.

Blogger Dyspeptic April 20, 2018 12:56 PM

As a former libertarian I can give credit to that utopian philosophy for pointing out that conservatism is intellectually incoherent. Conservatism is a temperament, not a political philosophy.

I think the NeoCons do have some actual principles though. Everything they do is based on the principle that what is good for Israel and the Jewish people is good for the world. It's much easier to understand their strategy and tactics once that is realized.

Blogger SciVo April 20, 2018 1:38 PM

Heh. Back in the day, my college dorm made a David Letterman-style Top Ten list of "things campus security might say." I only remember the top three:

3. Stop! Or I'll yell stop again!
2. Stop, or I'll throw my cane at you!
1. Sorry ma'am, just... checking the shower for prowlers.

So basically, occidental conservatives are the campus security officers of politics.
