For backers only

I'm very pleased to be able to finally announce that the digital edition of Alt★Hero #1: CRACKDOWN has been released to the backers of the Alt★Hero project. If you are a backer who unsubscribed to the Castalia House bookclub or if you did not receive the email, please email me with BACKER in the subject and I will send out second mailing tonight with the link that will allow you to download the 11 meg file.

The digital edition is in the MOBI format, which will work on your Kindle. You can also use download the free Kindle Previewer for Windows  or Macintosh to read the digital edition on your computer. This is the same file that will be released for Kindle and Kindle Unlimited next week, we're just getting it out early to the backers.

We anticipate having the first print edition out in about two weeks. It will retail for $3 and will be in the same royal octavo size as the QM and Jeeves comic books. French, German, and Italian editions will soon follow.

Please feel free to discuss the first issue of Alt★Hero in the Forums. I look forward to hearing your reactions. Thanks to all the backers who have made this possible, and thanks to the Arkhaven team, especially Cliff Cosmic and Matteo Mystic, for all their hard work in bringing this from concept to comic book.

Alt-comics Doing Battle! Excellent!

Congrats boys. This is an absolutely fantastic accomplishment.

DC is fighting back with targeted marketing for the real fans of comics

Its gonna be difficult to compete with this lol

Blogger VD May 16, 2018 9:54 AM

well there are some twitter trolls who are eating crow today...

Oh, I doubt that. First they'll say that the print edition isn't out. Then they'll point out that the single issue print edition is not the six-issue collected hardcover backer's edition. And that's not even including the complaints about the art, the story, the dialogue, and the characters.

I have supreme confidence in their ability to move the goalposts.

Blogger Unknown May 16, 2018 9:55 AM

Any word when the backer tees are shipping?

Congrats Vox

Any word when the backer tees are shipping?

Not for quite a while. They will ship with the first paperback/hardcover editions. We can't reasonably ship out each and every thing separately.

I take it "Rainbow" is Milo inspired?

Blogger VD May 16, 2018 10:11 AM

He's more inspired by a friend of mine from my Psykosonik days, actually. But I can see where you might get that idea.

Blogger JACIII May 16, 2018 10:20 AM

Nice. Good to remember old friends.

Any chance we can get JamieR to do a soundtrack??

Blogger The Observer May 16, 2018 10:23 AM

Ah, very nice; just finished reading. I see the first handful of pages had to be redrawn - I take it that's the reason for the delay. Did the original artist bail?

Blogger Mark Cook May 16, 2018 10:23 AM

Well worth the wait!.. I really enjoyed it. I think it's going to Make Comics Great Again!

Blogger VD May 16, 2018 10:24 AM

No, same artist. The main delay was the same colorist doing AH #1 and Avalon.

Blogger Liberty Matters May 16, 2018 10:26 AM

Congratulations, Vox!

Blogger Brick Hardslab May 16, 2018 10:28 AM

Arrggghh! I can't read it on kindle or PC. The pages and panels won't expand big enough for me to read it or even really see what is going on. It won't rotate on my kindle anyway so even if it did expand each panel would be cut in half or worse.

I feel like stork trying to eat soup from a saucer.

Blogger JACIII May 16, 2018 10:31 AM

The dollar store sells reading glasses granddad.

Blogger The Observer May 16, 2018 10:32 AM

well there are some twitter trolls who are eating crow today...

Those who were in that tiff with Mr. Arroz a couple days back said they wouldn't stop saying it was a scam even when it came out because it would suck anyway. The SDL's right about goalpost moving. I think that's where I saw the claim that one of the artists had bailed due to industry pressure, but I could be wrong. I'll go back and check Jon's timeline.

Thank you for your kind and helpful suggestion! I would have never imagined such a thing would be possible. Lenses in a helpful framework so that you do not need to hold it in the hand to enlarge small things. And such a clever name too, 'reading glasses'.

I stand in awe of your assistance in this matter. Perhaps those of us with other vision problems can go to you and be cured of all problems.

Blogger The Lizard King May 16, 2018 11:09 AM

So first off, I would like to congratulate Vox Day and all others involved in the project for getting the first comic released. It's a big milestone and hopefully only a taste of what is to come. I have just finished reading it and enjoyed it for what it is worth.

I do have one question though, I am aware that Alt-hero takes place in an alternative history where WW2, as we know it, didn't happen. My question is then to VD why this decision was made and how it connects to the EU as portrayed in the comic. EU-hired superheroes suppressing nationalist movements would make sense in our timeline where nationalism gained a bad rep among elites following WW2. But I have a harder time imagining strong anti-nationalist existing in this alternative timeline where IIRC the Germans managed to overthrow the nazis and even beat the soviets.

This is not meant to be a criticism per say, but a question I've had regarding the setting of alt-hero and where I would love to hear Vox Day's own insight into this decision on how the world of alt-hero is. What made strong anti-nationalist movements possible if WW2 as we know it never happened in the world of Alt-Hero?

Blogger Longtime Lurker May 16, 2018 11:18 AM

Outstanding Accomplishment! Kudos all the way around!

That's awesome. I would like to take this opportunity to ask some other comics questions. First, will the physical version of RBR #1 be available on Amazon? Also, when is issue 3 coming out on kindle? Finally, when will Avalon #1 be out? Sorry for making too many questions, lol.

Blogger John May 16, 2018 11:58 AM

So, you went from "I know nothing about comics" to a fully functioning comic publisher in...just under eight months? Beautiful. This is what building our own platforms looks like.

No idea, that's an Amazon issue. I would recommend you buy it from Castalia Books Direct. I thought Issue #3 was out... anyhow, this month. Avalon #1 will be out in digital within three weeks.

Enjoyable read, glad I backed it.

I give Alt★Hero Issue #1 two thumbs up.

I'm really looking forward to the hard copies and the Rebel figurine.

Blogger S'mon May 16, 2018 1:09 PM

Well it was a bit amateurish in the writing & pacing but a good start, I liked it.

The MOBI format sucks on my PC, I can only get it to show in whole-page view. Wish it were available in PDF.

I did like how the Austrian deep state decided to give the launch of Alt*Hero #1 some free publicity this week -

A good mention in The Federalist today:

Alt-Hero Changes The Game
In September of 2017, political commentator, author, and publisher Vox Day decided to get involved in the comic industry after his fans begged him to do something about the state of Marvel and DC Comics. Day launched a crowdfund effort for a book titled “Alt-Hero.”

Even with no track record in comics, the book launched to incredible success. It enabled Day to bring in veteran comic writer Chuck Dixon, as well as to work with some higher calibre artists than were originally available to him. Alt-Hero’s campaign began with a controversial drawing of a character named “Rebel,” who wore a costume designed after the confederate flag.

The social justice crowd lost their minds, calling everyone involved with the project racist and white supremacist, including artist Timothy Lim, who is of Asian descent. The mainstream comic media didn’t mention the project once, going radio silent in an effort to not give it any more attention than it was already getting. Even with the lack of media, the book raised a staggering $235,000. The message fans sent by contributing at this level shook the industry.

Blogger Blume May 16, 2018 1:57 PM

For those downloading and opening on their phones, if you already have kindle already check and make sure the setting for data storage access is on.

Blogger M. Bibliophile May 16, 2018 2:04 PM

Okay, THAT was fun. Good cast of characters, I love that they're being portrayed semi-sympathetically so that we can understand their motivations rather than just being nebulously eeeeeevil. Captain Euro is the perfect true-believing crusader whose face will only be improved by a set of knuckles, Dynamique lives up to the hype (really dig the art style), and the team feels like an established unit with their interactions.

Also, will Agualonia get more time up front? Asking, um, for a friend.

Anonymous Anonymous May 16, 2018 2:09 PM

Great, I loved it. Glad I backed.

The only minor gripe I have is that sometimes I'm not exactly sure what order the balloons are meant to be read in. There were a few times where back-and-forth dialogue seemed a little disjointed due to this. Maybe it's just me.

Minor issue though. I actually thought the art was great, and I like how Vox is letting the EU side speak and not making everyone on a side he personally doesn't agree with pure evil. I thought Dynamique was really well realized, and she made a great perspective character. Very interested to see where the story goes.

Blogger Jonathon Davies May 16, 2018 2:10 PM

Excellent. Sitting down to read it with a cup of tea. Been looking forward to it for ages.

Blogger SirHamster May 16, 2018 3:03 PM

Devoured it in one sitting. Looking forward to the followup.

Having seen some of the pre-release artwork was a little bit of a minus, because it looks like some pages got cut, and I got hung up over a missing page, even though the sequence works as is.

Also had a little difficulty with some word balloon sequencing. General rule is up->down and left->right, so any combination of down-left and up-right balloons creates ambiguous order.

But if that's an experiment to make the eyes wander over the artwork ... interesting.

Blogger James Dixon May 16, 2018 3:08 PM

I'll read it when I get home tonight and can transfer it to my Kindle Fire. I wonder if diversity and comics will review it or not.

Blogger Killua May 16, 2018 3:27 PM

Pretty cool start. Im curious to see what kind of powers they all have. Redshift is super fast, Rainbow guy seems to be able to turn himself into light or something, that grey dude took a grenade to the face, etc. Awesome!

Blogger losemoneyfast May 16, 2018 3:43 PM

Apparently the Austrian police got an advanced copy of Alt*Hero#1 and thought it was orders...

Blogger tuberman May 16, 2018 4:25 PM

Blogger Junius Stone May 16, 2018 5:01 PM

Can't wait for the paperback copy. Just orderd issue 1 of Quantum Mortis. And we have that Jawbreakers project...good time to be a conservative comics fan.

Anonymous Anonymous May 16, 2018 5:41 PM

I wouldn't hold my breath. I lost a lot of respect for Diversity & Comics and Douglas Ernst when they totally ignored not only the Alt-Hero kickstarter on their channels, but even more unreasonably, the Will Caligan kickstarter as well.

They're both veterans, and the comics industry isn't that big. It's a bit hard to believe they weren't aware; we know D&C knew about Alt-Hero and called it "Re-Tarded."

I can sort of understand ignoring the Alt-Hero kickstarter, though it's lame. But ignoring the Will Caligan one as well was cowardly. Vox is proven right again about moderates.

At least D&C is fighting against SJWs a little bit, even though he would let them right back in again.

Blogger Dave May 16, 2018 5:45 PM

Oh yeah, hard to believe we've finally arrived at this point; I'm reading the full digital version of Alt★Hero #1: CRACKDOWN on my device.

I feel as though I already knew most of the story as a result of the teases during the FreeStartr campaign, but it definitely whetted my appetite for the remaining editions, 15 in total with Avalon?

It's not that edgy or in-your-face Alt Right. The naysayers will have to find other elements to criticize rather than hitting on the usual racist, sexist, anti-LBGTist blather. However, anyone attempting to dismiss it out of hand because Alt-Right, will not be credible.

I'll get into my other comments on the Forum.

OK, downloaded onto my Kindle and read.
It was as good as expected. Like a few others said the panels that were in the previews but not comic were jarring, but I understand space constraints.

I'll try to write a review this weekend.

Anonymous Anonymous May 17, 2018 7:25 AM

I don't seem to be able to comment in the alt-hero forums - must be missing something.

That said - I was quite surprised at how short the comic was. I suppose I'm used to reading comics where you get an entire story at one go, rather than a taster. My boy made the same comment to me after reading through - he was really interested but it was short.

Is there any idea when the second installment of this story is due? (#2 appears to be another story altogether)

Blogger VD May 17, 2018 7:37 AM

Short? It had 27 percent more pages and about 100 percent more text than the average mainstream comic.

Blogger Markku May 17, 2018 7:41 AM

neocolonial, you are probably comparing it to the kind of books that you'd find in libraries or bookstores, not comic stores. Those are either graphic novels, or they are omnibus editions containing multiple issues. This is a single issue. There will be an omnibus once all the relevant issues are released.

Anonymous Anonymous May 17, 2018 7:46 AM

Markku / VD - I'm sure you are correct. Most of my experience growing up was with things like Asterix or Tintin, which were substantially longer. I didn't have that much contact with 'issue' comics and probably had different expectations because of that.

Blogger Markku May 17, 2018 7:47 AM

Which is to say, you're probably comparing it to something like this: Bone, Vol. 1. As it says in the description: "The nine-volume Bone graphic novel series...". Note the about 10 USD price, compared to our 3 USD.

Anonymous Anonymous May 17, 2018 7:58 AM

@84 - Not really, just in that I've never come across the notion of comics short enough that they had to be bundled! Other than newspaper style strip comics which I occasionally found in tabletop form.

Some part of this is probably due to me growing up a stones throw from the setting of 'The Missionaries'.

Blogger michimartini May 17, 2018 4:53 PM

Hey - this is gooood! I was a bit unsure about that since being somewhat disappointed by QM #1, but Alt-Hero is definitely a winner. Congratulations to the SDL.
