Brazil is much stronger this time. Hopefully they learned some lessons from 2014.

Blogger CarpeOro June 14, 2018 10:13 AM

With no USA, I'm stuck watching Telemundo. I'll probably watch the opening game and a couple of the finals.

Blogger Matthew McDaniel June 14, 2018 10:19 AM

When I used to teach Saudis they had no respect for their own team. They were all Barcelona fans.

Blogger Alexander June 14, 2018 10:21 AM

Game 1: ENGLAND WORLD CHAMPS IN THE MAKING

Game 2: We are still in this!

Game 3: Please just beat Belgium

Game 4: Go Portugal!!!

If Russia loses today expect Molotov cocktails & fighting on the metro. Same for if they win.

Blogger Nate June 14, 2018 10:22 AM

America isn't in it. Italy isn't in it. The Netherlands are not in it. Chile is not in it. Cameroon isn't in it. Ivory Coast isn't in it. Greece isn't in it.

This is like... Lollapalooza 57... the concert no one wants to see.

Blogger The Kurgan June 14, 2018 10:42 AM

If Russia doesn’t crush Saudi Arabia I’ll be disappointed.

Blogger Raggededge June 14, 2018 10:45 AM

Agree with Nate, I'll watch because I enjoy soccer, but it's hard for me to be passionate about a World Cup without the US and Holland in it.

Blogger pyrrhus June 14, 2018 10:51 AM

Russia-Saudi about to come on...I enjoy the World Cup regardless of whether the US is in it, but was shocked that Italy didn't make it..The US usually embarrasses itself anyway, but this time got knocked out by losing to a flyspeck in the Caribbean, which is just absurd.

Blogger Nate June 14, 2018 10:53 AM

The world cup will make excellent background noise tv. and... that's about all.

Blogger Ex-Pat June 14, 2018 10:56 AM

As Gary Lineker once said "Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans win". Although, this time it might just be Belgium

Blogger Arthur Tintagel June 14, 2018 11:04 AM

Just like every other World Cup, either Brazil, Italy, Germany, or Spain is taking the cup home again.

Blogger Lazarus June 14, 2018 11:05 AM

FIFA using a Video Assist Referee team. Could be interesting. No wonder Italy tanked in the qualifiers.

I'll be interested to see how decent US Soccer becomes in a decade or so with the decline of youth football.

Are the Saudis a pan-Mohammedan team? Half the team is black. I guess they took a card from the French. I hope the Russians blow out KSA 3-0 or better!

Blogger Shane Farrell June 14, 2018 11:29 AM

Just remember lads, whoever plays, Nike, Adidas, and Visa wins.

Blogger Sim1776 June 14, 2018 11:30 AM

Got a Fox affiliate on the boob tube? Today's game and two of tomorrow's games are all on the local Fox station. Only the early game is on FS1.

Blogger BR MK June 14, 2018 11:35 AM

Even without seeing the others, it seems that Russia and KSA are amongst the weakest teams.

Blogger BR MK June 14, 2018 11:51 AM

FWIW, an explanation for the weak showing of the arabic team is that they are coming from Ramadan fasting.

Don't forget Argentina! They're always a contender.

On the other hand; I didn't account for this new data...

In ultraconservative Saudi Arabia, a strict interpretation of Islam dictates everything from dress codes to entertainment.

Soccer, however, seems to be a different matter.

The nation’s soccer federation has announced that its national team will be exempted from fasting next Ramadan, in order to prepare for the World Cup, Aajel website has reported.

Abstaining from food and drink during daylight hours for the month is one of the five pillars of Islam, considered mandatory for practicing Muslims. Those who are traveling may be released from the obligation, however, while some understandings of Islamic law allow for those engaged in hard labor to be excused.

Russia 3
Arabia 0
Go Russia!

Thanks. That means there is no known excuse for this weak showing.

They are red. They are white. They are Danish Dynamite. Send the frogs packing in tears again.

France plays well in France.

Blogger Nate June 14, 2018 3:21 PM

my kids were outside... and the sky just opened up. massive sudden downpour... They sprinted for the door... when they got inside... the 10 year old said, "sorry daddy. We went full France."

Blogger nswhorse June 14, 2018 6:46 PM

Our ever biased sports media here in Australia has us finishing ahead of Denmark and Peru. It's amazing how quickly we've forgotten our diabolical qualifying form. Still, at least we qualified, unlike the US, Italy, and Holland. :P

Blogger Latigo3 June 14, 2018 7:25 PM

I don't know. A World Cup without some of my favorite teams, I think I will just keep up with the scores

Blogger weka June 14, 2018 10:47 PM

Russia has set the standard. I expect the other teams in that pool to truly pummel the KSA. Double digit nil by the end of that pool

Blogger Thad tuiol June 14, 2018 11:55 PM

Only 3 white French players in the whole squad, and 7 of the starting English players are black...and you guys are giving this globohomo Inc. bread and circuses farce on?

Blogger Bernard Korzeniewicz June 15, 2018 4:01 AM

@Alexander

My Poland is similar - crash and burn after an absurd PR hype.
I hope for Spain.

On a Football related issue - a based Lady Russian Communist MP has urged Russian women not to have sex with african men ; https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-44481590

Blogger Harry Goldblatt MD June 15, 2018 5:30 AM

Here is a heuristic: The more diverse a national team is, the less likely they are of advancing to the final round.
The non-native players feel like they are mercenaries and after an exhausting season playing for their club there is no energy left. A team needs the nationalistic fighting spirit to carry them through.
This rules out France and Belgium. The French World Cup team that won in 1996 and the Euro two year later was the last majority French team. Since then it has been downhill despite fielding all star teams at every round.
