A very poor job

That's the only way I can describe my ongoing attempts to avoid the media, at least this week. I'll be going on with Alex Jones today at 1PM Central, and with Jesse Lee Peterson tomorrow. You can probably imagine what Alex and I will be discussing. Please note that these appearances do not mean that I have changed my mind about interviews or that I want to be inundated with podcast requests and so forth.

Anyhow, I discussed the recent banning of Infowars from Youtube and the other social media platforms on, ironically enough, Youtube the other day.

The problem is that a lot of people took the bite from the apple, you know, it was tempting to use the platforms that they offer you. It was tempting to use Twitter because Twitter allowed people like Mike Cernovich and Jack Posobiec and many others to quickly build up audiences much more rapidly than they could do in an organic fashion on their own platforms. So the problem is nobody bothered to do it, everybody wanted to use these platforms that were constructed because they made it easy for you.

Well, guess what, it's not easy anymore, so what? There's a lot of us who have been dealing with this stuff for over ten years. If you're a right-winger who happened to write fiction, you've been banned from most publishing houses for about the last 15 years, all right, so none of this is new. I mean, people sometimes ask how come you're so calm about this, that, and the other thing, and it's because I'm not surprised by any of this. All of this was inevitable. The moment that they felt that they were sufficiently in control, they were going to act like this, and so you know that the time for taking advantage of playing around and using their platforms is over.

Jesse is one of the only more mainstream conservative s I like. He is actually a Christian and he will actually have a dialog with people from the alternative right.

Blogger Steven Johnson August 08, 2018 11:46 AM

When you're in the majority, they care about minority rights.
When they're the majority, not so much.
So when we win this culture war ... we need to care less about their rights. Of course, the children born later won't see why it's so important, and will slacken again. But we have to try.

Blogger Jack Ward August 08, 2018 11:50 AM

If there is ANYONE that can handle the media it would be Vox. That means, of course, mainly staying away from the filth and/or picking your battles with those you can usually trust. Somewhat trust. After all, not too long ago Alex Jones was asking, I think it was Vox initial appearance there, correct if wrong, but, he asked somewhere within why the heck hasn't this guy [Vox] been here before. And, I do believe he mentioned something to effect, 'come back anytime.'

Blogger DraveckysHumerus August 08, 2018 12:05 PM

We can still use their platforms. To direct their normie traffic over to our platforms. When we do, in fact, actually have platforms that are superior so the normies will enroll.

Blogger SidVic August 08, 2018 12:14 PM

Vox is correct that alternative platforms will arise. In fact these shenanigans may create vast opportunities. Remember FOX arose because they realized that 50% of the markets was not served by the alphabet networks. Vox is relatively sanguine about the speech suppression because his game plan is clearly to exploit and profit from it. Perhaps they overstep and FB and google will ultimately be taken down. I do worry that they will be successful at creating an internet ghetto with limited reach and influence.

Blogger Kallmunz August 08, 2018 12:41 PM

As we have seen this week a new media group has been formed which started by kicking Alex Jones off, they include:

Facebook
Apple
Google
Spotify

If we could only come up with an acronym for them.

Blogger Peaceful Poster August 08, 2018 12:48 PM

Andrew Torba was on with AJ yesterday.

His main message was that we have to build our own platforms.

VD, I know you have your problems with Torba, but at least you can agree on that!

Blogger VD August 08, 2018 12:52 PM

VD, I know you have your problems with Torba, but at least you can agree on that!

From whom do you think he learned that phrase? The problem with Torba is that it's not enough to build the platform, you also have to run it intelligently in order to bring people over to it.

Allowing idiots to freely libel, use obscenities, and post photoshopped pictures of your users' wives being gang-raped is simply not going to cut it. Gab has no chance of becoming an alternative to Twitter even if Twitter shuts down tomorrow, because Torba is a "free speech means anything goes" ideologue.

Infowars is banned; BANNED, we're told. However will we watch you with Alex Jones at 1pm Central?

Somebody mentioned short wave radio? Do they still exist? Will Vox and Alex be cut off mid-sentence? How will we know if Alex holds Vox over for more segments than his last appearance? Will Vox squeeze in an Alt★Hero mention? So many questions...

Blogger Brian S August 08, 2018 1:10 PM

BitChute should have it (don't think they do live but I just started using it so im not sure), you can probably watch it on the infowars website as well

Vox,

Your DarkStreams definitely make your ideas make more sense to the people who are new or maybe not quite intelligent enough to get your point in some of your posts. I am by no means as intelligent as you, but I've read you for so long that I like watching the communication gap happen with some people.

It is sad you have to put this:

Vox: "Please note that these appearances do not mean that I have changed my mind about interviews or that I want to be inundated with podcast requests and so forth."

I can almost guarantee you at least a couple of people stopped reading before that sentence and will jump on you for being hypocritical or something.

Blogger VD August 08, 2018 1:28 PM

Blogger Wuzzums Fuzzums August 08, 2018 1:49 PM

Minds seemed to have a very promising interface but they messed it up with their points system turning the whole platform in a spammer's paradise. Literally everyone there spams. Countless posts with thousands of views but zero user engagement. I don't understand why you would bother to sink so much time and capital in a site only to ruin it with an easily avoidable mistake. I mean I understand "why", it's to make money through their crypto currency but surely by now they realized people only visit their site to spam their stuff.

I'm optimistic though. With all these failures in creating alternatives we now know what doesn't work so the next venture will have a higher likelihood of success.

That's the only way I can describe my ongoing attempts to avoid the media, at least this week.

I always assumed that "don't talk to the media" only applied to the MSM types anyway, as opposed to someone like Mike Cernovich, Stefan Molyneux, or Alex Jones etc. You know, the types for whom "journalist" is a slur.

Yep, there's a community called DXers, people who do world radio surfing/listening, in addition to HAM radio guys who also broadcast (more expensive and license required).

I have cheap shortwave receivers from Sony and Tecsun, I'd recommend either (the Sony is superior quality but Tecsun is far easier to tune).

True.

That is something I tell my very conservative friends and relatives -- stop pointing out the hypocrisy of leftists like that means anything to them.

I find it very interesting how your steadfastness and growth online the past few years has shown how influential you've been to all of us, and then we spread it from here to the four corners.

Something about watching this Dark Stream about building platforms was inspiring despite you not trying to.

Blogger Wuzzums Fuzzums August 08, 2018 3:20 PM

Jones is wrong about his whole "we need to make them stop censoring us or there's gonna be a war in 3 months" type of thinking.

He's looking at the easy way of going back to how things used to be. It's just delaying the inevitable which is plain childish. His fears of war are nothing more than rationalizations after the fact. If banning him and other right-leaning folk will lead somehow to war then surely giving them the opportunity to ban you again is by no means a smart tactic.

I do get why he's like this, though. Spending so much time and money building those platforms and watching them get taken away in less than 1h must hurt. It's the sunk costs fallacy in action. He's already at stage 2 (anger) so next week I'm hoping he'll be touting the "we need to build our own platforms" mindset.

Blogger The Deuce August 08, 2018 3:26 PM

One thing I can't help but wonder though is, would Trump have won if so many on the right hadn't taken the bite of that apple? The MAGA presence on Twitter especially, and the GamerGate presence before that, certainly made some dents in the left's culture war machinery. It also resulted in many on the right having major platforms that could be taken away at the press of a button, but was it really an avoidable mistake? We need our own platforms, and I'm in the process of transitioning over to Oneway from Facebook, but how do we balance that with the need to engage the culture where it is in the meantime?

I joined yesterday. Seems OK, complete suite of social media, but small. I don't do social media much, so no expert opinion. They have these functions:
Home
Social
News
Videos
Forums
Blogs
Stories
Campaigns
Bank

Vox Day and Voxiversity are on it but have no posts. Derek the CEO posted Vox Day's YouTube video about Alex being banned (the one shown in this post). And another post labeled: 'PSA - Processing Payments for Christians, Conservatives and the Alt-Right' (https://oneway.com/derek/2548346000004) so he seems to be on the right side. He is open to building a Stripe clone if needed.

I'm fine with this prohibition in their terms, you may not: "Contains nudity or sexually explicit materials or degenerate behavior or promotes them."

Maybe that info helps.

There are media figures who, while they may not always be allies, aren't enemies. Rush, Hannity, Sexton, Jones, etc. If they offer you an interview you can probably safely take it.

Blogger James Dixon August 08, 2018 3:36 PM

Discus is no surprise, but Mailchimp is. I'd have to see the notice before I could make any judgements.

We need our own platforms, and I'm in the process of transitioning over to Oneway from Facebook, but how do we balance that with the need to engage the culture where it is in the meantime?

We need to build the platforms of the future that attract younger users and generate excitement, not just slap together functionally limited clones of Twitter and Facebook. That's much easier said than done; I'm not at all sure what the next generation of platforms even looks like.

Blogger Al K. Annossow August 08, 2018 4:02 PM

I think the future will be along the lines of paid or self hosted social media. No one needs years worth of old posts, pictures, and videos. So a small fee, free for limited data, or allow ads covers hosting recent content. Download something if you really want to save it.

Alternatively, someone has dropbox, their own server, Gmail Drive/Docs, website, or whatever and "social media apps" are consolidators that bring pretty much anything from anywhere from the people you choose. Each person curates what old stuff stays or goes because they're paying for it themselves. The consolidator receives push notifications or polls the sources.

We defeat the forces of evil by enforcing order and beauty on our platforms, not by being even more chaotic than them. Free speech is a load of rubbish, give people rules and enforce them, people will accept this if you actually enforce order and beauty.

Blogger James LaFond August 09, 2018 3:22 AM

Every time I get a book banned by Amazon my sales go up. It is already to the point where I am afraid they will not ban my next book. I could never pay for this kind of advertising and regard their platform as free advertising. As soon as they came down on us our own direct products, with triple the profit margin, began to sell better than ever. In addition these are top-down censorship initiatives that are so clunky I have continued to published previously banned books on the platform that banned it. Having published over 100 titles on their platform, I know how it works better than their management does and have extensive experience with their customer service people [who were told not to address my queries] and could tell that the trigger pullers on the back end were only doing the bare minimum and that the decision makers never saw the back end. Actually, this privatized censorship is so ineffective one might wish to use it as an argument against libertarian notions of civic management.
Thank you.

Vox, I sure wish Alex Jones would let you complete your own thoughts instead of doing it for you, over and over again. He almost sounds like a typical Fake News hostile interviewer because he just won't stop interrupting you. The exposure to a friendly host and audience is nice, but how helpful is it really, if you can't get a word in edgewise? It's hard to separate your thoughts from his. Isn't it possible to give him some private interview tips? Or put some conditions on an appearance. "Alex, I'll be happy to be on your show, but please, LET ME EXPRESS COMPLETE THOUGHTS."

I get he's got a shtick but he can improve tremendously while still maintaining the in-your-face persona.

Blogger VD August 09, 2018 5:01 AM

I get he's got a shtick but he can improve tremendously while still maintaining the in-your-face persona.

You remind me of the woman who told me that Ann Coulter would be "so much more successful" if only she was nicer in her columns. Why on Earth would Alex change anything? He has built up a massive audience being who he is.

Isn't it possible to give him some private interview tips? Or put some conditions on an appearance.

Seriously? "Hey, Alex, I know you have two million subscribers for each of mine, but I'm here to tell you how you should do things." And if I were Alex, and someone put conditions on appearing on my show, I'd just laugh, say "oh, absolutely" and tell my booking people never to contact them again.

Blogger Shimshon August 09, 2018 5:29 AM

Vox, when you put it that way, I understand your point. It's just frustrating listening to you voice a thought on his show, but never hear you finish it. And I mean never. But if it works for him and for you, then it's all good. The only times I listen to him anyway are when you're on it, and I'm probably not the only one here who is like that.

Blogger VD August 09, 2018 6:33 AM

That's the medium. I know it going in. So I don't worry about it. Besides, maybe the young people with the attention span of gnats prefer that sort of rapid-cut dialogue. I don't worry about it; I think video is a stupid, inefficient, and dishonest medium anyhow, but I've been thoroughly outvoted on that.

We don't make the rules, we just play the game.

Blogger InformationMerchant August 09, 2018 4:45 PM

Not just the young. I've seen people older than you completely nonplussed by a 45 minute interview that wasn't cut up into 30 second questions and answers.

That said, you must've noticed Jones anticipates answers? He stops you when you're about to undermine civic nationalism. He also stops you when you mention something scary. For example, I remember you bringing up Richard Spencer in order to make the point that his dancing monkey routine provides the media with a straw man for the Alt Right. Jones stopped you at Spencer and "finished your sentence for you". I think the words he put in your mouth were something along the lines of "they use Richard Spencer to make Conservatives seem racist".
