Arkstream: The Ember War campaign

From the transcript of the Arkstream:

I'm excited about this. We we have another crowdfunding campaign that's going on, that's been very successful, Alt-Hero: Q, some of you are probably already backing that one, but Ember War is significant in a different way. It's significant because this is the first time that a major science fiction writer is doing a comics-related crowdfunding and so this is potentially quite significant. Just like the original Alt-Hero, this is an experiment. The magic of crowdfunding is not that you can get people to give you a lot of money if you're lucky, if you happen to hit the right sweet spot at the right time, the magic of crowdfunding is that it tells you where the demand is ahead of time.

And you know, we weren't that serious about getting into comics originally. I'd had people lobbying me for three years to do it, and finally I said, "okay fine,  we'll see if there is genuine demand for it." As it turned out as you know there turned out to be ten times more demand for it than we ever imagined, and so this is a test, this is an experiment. If you like military science fiction, if you want to see more military science fiction turned into graphic novels, it would be a very,  very good idea to support the Ember War campaign even if you're not familiar with either Richard Fox or the Ember War Saga. I don't think that you'll be disappointed because it is a really good story.

I like mil sci-fi. Only owned one graphic novel before and that was a gift.

I will happily fight the culture war against lefty stupidity as global policy though, even if it means financing things that aren’t 100% up my alley.

So in spite of my previous comments, count me in.

That's the stuff. let's make Richard Fox an IP superstar.

I ordered the book from Amazon yesterday. If I like the book I'll support the comic.

I do like mil sci-fi. Will read book first to determine how much backing will be, but I will back.

Q related? Microchip disappears himself

"he deleted every post from his entire account"

Im trying to think of someone else who is creating space for right of center ideas, content, and creators.......? If the Left is to be defeated it will be because thousands of entrepreneurs seized upon VD's model of finding a deplorable customer and building a platform to give him what he wants.

One other reason to back this is that our teen-age children enjoy comics. I'm not going to out the Good Guys making comics here, because outside of ArkHaven they have to play carefully.

Is this series one that a parent could give his teenager? Rebel Dead Revenge is brilliant, but not for a 13-year-old. The Wooster series is for everyone. Etc.

And having the books on the shelf means that when your kiddo's friends come over she can grab it and say, "You guys have to read this." And even the one who doesn't really like reading that much will give it a try.

Yes, certainly.

At this point, I'm backing almost as a charitable donation. I'm really not terribly interested in this one, so I just signed up for the PDF ebook version. I want to support the project, and anything we can do to build up Arkhaven and get people used to and wanting Castalia House/Arkhaven/Dark Legion materials is all to the good.

If it turns out to be really great, I may pick up another version later. But dammit, I want the option to be able to pick up another version if it turns out I like it! So, supporting again. Good luck!

I want to support the project, and anything we can do to build up Arkhaven and get people used to and wanting Castalia House/Arkhaven/Dark Legion materials is all to the good.

That's precisely what we would ideally like people who are on-board with the mission, though not with the particular project, to do. Remember, the number of backers is also very important from a PR perspective. We include those smaller rewards for just that reason.

And if you like it, well, there is always the retail version when it comes out.

Blogger Were-Puppy September 19, 2018 1:03 PM

I'm going to support it next week.

I'd like to get physical rewards so that the comic can be shared with friends, but the extra $10 shipping makes it a bit pricier than I'd like.

If that gets removed, backing at that level for sure.

When you announced Right Ho Jeeves you said that you hoped it'd inspire people to read the source material. That's going to be apply along this line.

Fortunately, Quantum Mortis is the best possible test for this. It had no crowd funding, so people could read the first issue of the comic version without having already bought the second.

You have the best possible data for what happens when someone likes the comic adaptation. How did the novel do compared to last year? The option of going to issue #2 or directly to the source material is really interesting.

You've also got the material to make something like a movie trailer for novels now, which is a cool side benefit.

I always miss these streams when they happen.
Can anyone come in or is it invite-only sorta thing?

Blogger InformationMerchant September 19, 2018 7:40 PM

They're just Youtube livestreams. That is the channel you want to click the notification bell on to give you the best chance at catching one live.

I appreciate your transparency with your customers. Your use of crowdfunding to gauge audience demand is a wise move IMO.
