Baby Boomers refuse to relinquish power

In a move that surprises precisely no one, Democratic Baby Boomers refuse to retire or get out of the way:
The Next Generation Of Democratic Leaders Wants To Move Up, But The Baby Boomers Are In The Way

Ambitious, young House Democrats have a problem: At a time when the party is calling for generational change, there are few opportunities to advance. Leadership has long been static for Democrats in the House. Reps. Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, and Jim Clyburn, the top three Democrats, respectively, have all been at the top of the House Democratic ladder for more than a decade. And none have shown any signs of leaving; Pelosi has said she expects to be speaker if Democrats retake the House in November.
In fairness, the country isn't entirely ruined yet. And they're still just as cool and sexy as they ever were. They changed the world, you know. Woodstock!

Never trust anyone over eighty.

While boomers have mucked things up. Not one is a Boomer.

Is it considered pedantic to define generational attitudes along strict time delineations? Asking for a friend of no consequence.

Blogger Silent Draco October 16, 2018 11:17 AM

Observation: No, it's not a Boomer thing. Trailing edge here, identify much closer with X than the leading edge crybabies. Do an 8 year offset on the physical generations to match up the mental outlooks. The unlamented narcissists leading the Boomers (first 5-8 years) have the same "All for One, but More for Me!" attitude as the tail of Greatest Generation, including these three of the 40K Thieves

Two of the are or hailed from the DPR Maryland. Therefore entitled to everything.

80 and over is fine. Those are the pre-Boomers, the silent generation between the G.I.s and the Boomers. Those who were children during the war but old enough to remember some of it.

It is the people from 60 to 80 you got to watch out for.

For most of my lifetime, we used to point and snicker at the ruling Soviet Politburo, because their average age was.....gasp....about 70. That was supposed to be a valid criticism. (Hillary Clinton will turn 71 a week from Friday.)

You can compare that to Japan where the MANDATORY retirement age is 55!

So what is the American solution? Raise the retirement age to 67, even though few people can actually get an interview for a job in this country after 50. (Yeah, I have tried it...many times.) Experience is only considered a plus at an early age (under 40). After that, the people interviewing you are more like your kid's ages.

Yes, we have the Older Americans Act that prohibits discrimination against people over 40 (!), but I have never heard of that law actually being enforced.

Maybe this society will eventually act out some of those sci-movies where people are executed once they turn 30. Maybe it would make more sense to execute men when they are divorced and their kids are taken away (and their future income), but keep the women around to entertain the young men.

Blogger kurt9 October 16, 2018 12:13 PM

As some else pointed out here, a lot of these 60's ex-hippy types are actually late silents (born around 1940), not boomers, although the boomers followed them right over the edge. So these people are actually in their late 70's. Nancy Pelosi is definitely experiencing age-related cognitive decline.

The thing about these people is that they are second-raters (the FDR New Deal Democrats were first-raters) and we know from the "Entrepreneur's Manual" (Richard M. White) that second-rates tend to hire third-raters (guys like Keith Ellison) because they do not want to hire anyone competent enough to threaten their own job security.

This is why the Democratic party reads like its from the Onion these days.

BTW, A lot of the weatherman and black panther types of the early 70's were born in the early 40's.

Boomers: The "Everything-was-better-in-my-day-especially-the-music" Generation

Some of the music was ok i guess. I am not a music lover, i.e. not important but its ok.

Yeah, Woodstock. You go to a rock concert and imagine you've changed the world, or created a new culture, or something.

Mostly what they accomplished was to advance STD's. That's about it. I think they also advanced drugs. I don't care, it was a mess and some poor saps had to clean it up. I hope they were paid well.

It is the people from 60 to 80 you got to watch out for.

My mom is a silent, she is 76. I didn't know her generation was behind this that whole time. Scary.

Guys, the Supreme Dark Lord means what he says.

80 means 80.

What?

Blogger kurt9 October 16, 2018 12:18 PM

The other factor is that, starting in 1993, the Clintons treated the party as there own personal fiefdom. They tended to purge anyone competent in a very Stalinesque fashion because they did not want any possible competition to Hillary to emerge in the party. This, combined with the narcissism of the 60's generation as well as them being second-raters hiring third-raters, is the reason why the Democratic party is in such disarray these days.

Obama made it in '08 partly because he created his own organization outside the party and because he was the ideal minority dream candidate that the left has dreamed about for 2 generations.

Personal story to confirm this. My Boomer parents divorced a few years ago. Mom, insisting that she would live forever retired and put everything into a high risk/high reward annuity. Surprise, she dies cause she knows more than everyone leaving a small estate but nothing like it should be cause of her investment decisions. After all, why not take out a mortgage so you can put more in the annuity. Dad, bless his heart, admits that she screwed us and is trying to limit the damage. The rest of her boomer friends refuse to read the paperwork or insist there has to be some mistake. Summary, 10 percent of boomers you can deal with. The rest........................

Vox, you once offered to have us cobble together a collection of stories about how life used to be, growing up, before the Boomers destroyed it all.

How about a collection of stories of what Boomers did to us growing up? And even stories of how these same Boomers refuse to watch their grandkids or contribute to their descendants? We could also work in stories of the saner days--your earlier idea--in which we try to capture those moments when there was a kind of family activity we're not likely to see again. (I think you talked about this in regards to a story involving your grandparents. You made a good point in that post.)

Yeah, I know. I am a late boomer. I have never said that stuff. I never bought into their BS. But I have been blamed for everything they did. Perhaps I could have done something. I wonder if anyone who has had computers and internet their entire life understand that we really wasn't exposed to the baby boomer bs like they were in the 90's and later. I was taught to stay away from they hippies, my friends and I considered them very bad. We were actually scared of them. We got our modern information from the 5 o clock news. Just look at Rex Tillerson. The man is well into his older years, but before he got tapped for Sec of State, he was the CEO of a huge corporation and had been for years.

He's just one example. Look at the CEOs at a lot of the major corps. in the US. These guys are elderly, yet are still dragging themselves out of bed every day, putting on a suit, and going off to work.

The real problem with the boomers is that they didn't breed. I am in SE Wisconsin, and EVERY manufacturing plant is experiencing catastrophic turnover with no backbench in the next 5-10yrs. A little more than half my plant's workforce is Boomer, almost 3/4 of the skill positions. There is no one out there to replace them except revolving door blockheads. The best recruits we're getting right now are from Venezuela in terms of employable, good attendance hard working good attitude - but they speak 50-100 words of English. It's a tough time and we're begging the boomers to stay longer because, basically, they aborted or failed to appropriately raise their children and there's no one to replace them with.

I am unsure how to take this boomer bashing. I agree with it, but I'm a target.

The key is to avoid solipsism and realize that you are not the same as a group you happen to be in, so when the group is criticized, you as an individual are not the "target." Whether the criticism applies to *you* should be completely separate from whether it's true of the group. This seems nearly impossible for Boomers to do, but it's worth a try.

If you criticize Xers, on the other hand, the loudest agreement will come from other Xers. That's probably not the best way to be either, but at least it's not Boomer.

Blogger Lurker October 16, 2018 1:24 PM

"the business world shakers are boomers? -- most are Gen X and younger now."

Really!? Soros, Hitlery, Junker, May, Merkel, Pelosi, Waters, Gates, Allen, etc.. ad infintum are Xers!? And where did the younger generations get that extreme lefTARDism from? It just spontaneously arose out of nowhere?

This. I thank God that my technically-boomer parents are able to see themselves as something other than part of the boomerborg.

The Boomers, despite complaining about identitarian politics, are the worst sort of identitarian: temporally transient. Civnats at least think about propagation of their culture, wrong as it is. Boomers are a fixed population that can never increase (praise the Lord!)

Refineries are the same way. Lots of turnover, with a gap where the next generation of workers should be. Engineers, technicians, etc. The problem doesn't exist in midstream and upstream, though, because unions dont really exist in those segments of oil and gas. Refineries are old guard, hidebound, and ossified places. Midstream and upstream are more flexible and open to new ideas and ways of doing things. Lots of young guys there too.

Absolutely agree about the over 80s. My remaining parent and friends' parents are all dyed-in-the-wool libtards, civnats, and convinced they've seen and experienced and learned all there is to see, do or know. And if they see it on the evening network news, it's the truth, by God (in whom they do not believe).

Add in all the other standard groups as well. I'm a boomer who hates boomers. I'm a woman who despises most women. I'm a . . . etc. In general, people suck. Still cannot figure out why God puts up with us; that, to me, is grace.

The Boomer Blame is misplaced. It has to do with culture and rootedness, which have--or had until pretty recently--to do with the part of the country that produced them. None of that Boomer BS in the South except for the snowbird colonists and a *very* few weak-minded natives. And very little madness even today. It's the descendants of the New England Puritans--abolitionists, Transcendentalists, Unitarians, Universalists, Unitarian-Universalists (for Heaven's sake!), Christian Science, etc., and their descendants in that tier of northern states that they settled and still populate--except for the snowbird contingent who are colonizing the South at an increasing pace. But "Boomers" is a non-starter as a catch-all term for the malefactors.

Check out the votes in House and Senate for and against Hart-Cellar (1965) and for the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. Look at presidential election-year voting maps. Lumping all Boomers together is really a non-starter. Wise up! Stop blaming *all* boomers. I think a lot of y'all here are too young to remember the 60s anyway. So the stuff you think you know is second-hand.

Sure the boomers are aesthetically disgusting - think Bob Dillon, the honking kike - but the greatest damage was done by previous generations.

I suppose my only idea of boomers is my parents and their buddies. When I look back at how I was raised I think the main thing that aggravates me is how all the women seemed to degrade their husbands at every turn. It was like a "thing" for women in the 1970's. Then most of them would get hateful when their husbands stepped out on them or turned into drunks or whatever. I am not so sure that it is a total boomer issue as it is feminist hijacking so many minds and trying to recreate nature with false narratives. My dad always spent as much time as he could with my sister and I while he worked his ass off building F-4's to kill communist in Vietnam. My mom stayed in bed when she wasn't working and complained about everything all the god damn time. She has since reverted to reality and is loving and a very good woman, but man for my childhood she was a pain in the ass.

Nancy Pelosi should have stepped aside years ago and she won't until she's either did or loses a primary.

DiFi, is nearly senile but she won't give up her seat in the Senate without someone getting out the pliers and prying her claws out of it. She may have just thrown the election is her quest to stay in the Senate.

Then there is "It's My Turn" Hillary. A woman who should have accepted the judgement of her nation and retired from public life. She's still portraying herself as the leader of the opposition despite the fact that the rank and file wish to god she would just shut up and go away.

When it comes to these old Women's Lib types, power is the all and the everything. It's nearly a pathological obsession for them.

If you ever study female serial killers, you will see a variant on this need. It's all about power there too. Male serial killers hunt but females gather.

SOME Boomers demanded those laws. Sheesh, it's like the social engineering machine was in the zone during the time of the Boomers, had every_last_one of them mind controlled, but then, amazingly, fell apart in subsequent generations. The change is so extreme that these days, they're all rational and think for themselves. Why the little Einsteins are so bright, they think the Boomers were solely responsible for today's ills. I mean, had the central banks not been in place, or had the War of Northern Aggression been lost, the Boomers would've made it happen. It's almost as if the little geniuses never heard the phrase "history is written by the victors".
You had to be there. There was no internet. Some publications were talking about government conspiracy, but if you wanted the hard core stuff, you had to get books from a sketchy outfit like Laissez-faire Publications, and you were nervous about ordering. You couldn't find people to talk to. I remember clearly, I was woke to a number of things, but people wouldn't listen.
I was born in 1960, my mother if the late 1930's. I had a video tape by Bo Gritz, talking about what he would change, if he was president. My mother wouldn't even stay in the room, and she didn't know anything about the guy.. The closest I could come to government resistance was a comment by a guy I know: "They're all a bunch of crooks. The Republicans steal from your right pocket, the Democrats from your left pocket".
If you weren't there, you don't know how difficult it was to find woke people. Don't assume it was anything like this internet age.

That is arguably the result of the older generations not teaching what really needed to be taught. Too much time spent on "magic dirt" and "how to virtue signal effectively" apparently. Far too much time protecting precious egos and insisting on All Safety All the Time.

This from a guy on the cusp between boomer and Xer (Xer by most delineations).

Us older guys, Boomer or Xer have the perspective of time and have seen all of the many changes in our culture. The young folks don't and haven't.

I know some young folks, some of Gen Zyklon, that are A-#1 squared away and hard working. When I see them and ask the question you posed, I ask myself, "How were we REALLY at that age?" and "What can I do to help them along?"

A bunch of idiot old men in politics yes, but the real power is in business/finance and there the power has already shifted to the next generation... So VD-- it's now your job to fix-- hurry up kid!

The first boomers were eligible to vote in 1967 or so. What you just said is that it took us over 30 years to finally get something right.

"And the eternal enemy did not do any of his work except through the Boomer generation."

The typical lefTARD talking point ie… false dichotomy. It just proves that MPAI makes it that much easier for him and the boomers have it in spades.

"None of that previous damage would even matter if the baby boomers had worked to correct the mistakes of their elders, rather than doubling down on the stupidity, and doing everything to completely abolish any time-tested principle of wisdom."

This. Now boomerTARDS back to your pretentious naval-gazing rerun of The Big Chill.

"This morning at the drive through I had to repeat my order 3 times -- s l o w l y -- until the young air head taking the order could finally "get it". I've noticed that this sort of interaction is common with non grey haired persons. I can understand a certain reluctance to pass the baton to these non wrinkled folks. They look great, but will the plumbing and lights srill work?"

Who ran their schools, and the teacher's colleges which produced the teachers in their schools?

I'm Gen-X, and I remember exactly the sort of bubble-headed idiots that the elementary education department admitted to their school -- people who couldn't even make it into psych, sociology, communications. Even the art students were more intelligent.

Those of us in Gen-X have been acutely aware, since grade school, how we never had, and never will have, the bodies to outnumber gen-X until we ourselves are literally to retirement age.

And the generation behind us has never even seen what a normal, healthy society looks like.

If your generation had put even half as much effort into fixing the mistakes of previous generations, instead of doubling down on them (sometimes repeatedly), I would have no problem with you.

But no... what few of you are on the side of righteousness sure are a bunch of cowards.

Boomerism is summed up entirely by Billy Joel in his "We Didn't Start the Fire" (*) which utterly neglects the fact that he and his cohort spent a LOT of effort throwing gasoline and diesel on the fire, and rabidly beating anybody who dared show up with a firehose, or even a bucket of water.

(*) which came out about the time that negative attention was first being focused on them for really screwing things up

I comprehend fine and you distract and deny in the stereotypical way. Which means you must be a boomer.

I've been praying for God to help us put those who "Do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God" [Micha 6:8] into positions of power and authority for a couple of years now, and I am encouraged. Moreover, James 5 says "the prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective."

@174 Re: Those were the days.

It was predictive for the boomers, but actually written by someone who had lived it:

Eugene Raskin or Gene Raskin (Bronx, New York, 5 September 1909 – Manhattan, New York, 7 June 2004),[1] was an American musician and playwright, author of the lyrics of the English version of the Russian song "Those Were the Days" and also of three books on architecture and adjunct professor at Columbia University (1936–1976).

Years active 1922–1946
Boris Ivanovich Fomin (Борис Иванович Фомин, 12 April 1900, Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire – 25 October 1948, Moscow, USSR) was a Soviet musician and composer who specialized in the Russian romance.

Several of Fomin's songs became popular in 1920s, most notably "Dorogoj dlinnoju" (Russian: Дорогой длинною, By the long road), commonly known for its English version "Those Were the Days", made world-famous in 1968 by Mary Hopkin and credited to Eugene Raskin who in 1962 wrote the English lyrics for the tune and claimed the song for his own. It was composed by Boris Fomin in 1924, first interpreted and recorded by Tamara Tsereteli (1925) and Alexander Vertinsky (1926); it was the latter who popularized it abroad.

Since Raskin wrote his lyrics in 1962, that means Raskin wrote the English lyrics when he was 53 (he was 59 when Mary Hopkins' single was released). So, the lyrics had resonance with him. Born 1909 would be the Flapper generation -- who were rather similar to the Baby Boomers in many ways.

With the Beatles they were shrieking in ecstacy, with Bad Orange Man they're shrieking in agony. So, basically not much difference for the objective observer.

What you think are boomers are really War Babies. They are the ones who marched for Civil Rights, burned draft cards, played in 60s rock bands, set bombs off with the weathermen underground and so forth. They were born between 1933 to 1945. They believed in big government and socialism and thought that they knew everything. They also got the good jobs and held on to them. If you were a junior SJW boomer, you had a difficult time getting started in any field because of the arrogant War Babies. In the entertainment field and in politics, they held on long past their due date. The only blessing is that the ones in the business world like to retire early.
Boomers had to take crap from these A-holes for most of their lives. They just are not dying fast enough.

I will give you credit on identifying the role of the 1933-45 crowd. My parents are in that set. Conservative rather than socialist, but other than that, your description of that age group does seem to be accurate.
