RIP Stan Lee

Stan Lee (1922-2018)
We're told an ambulance rushed to Lee's Hollywood Hills home early Monday morning and he was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. We're told that's where he died.

Excelsior and RIP, and thanks for the good times growing up.

The last years of this guy's life were a real cluster-f. It's too bad. RIP Stan. Thank you so very much for my favorite, The Incredible Hulk!

Stan and the Bullpen were the reverse to Pulp/SF/Fantasy's obverse on my reading entertainment coin growing up.

"With great power comes great responsibility."

RIP Stan.

Godspeed, Stan Lee.

"The last years of this guy's life were a real cluster-f"

dementia caused him to get a little grabby with the nurses. His daughter tried to take advantage of him. And Disney/Marvel probably engaged in elder abuse dragging him out for the cameos th last couple years.

Blogger Dane November 12, 2018 3:50 PM

He was at the beginning of the whole comic business he saw the rise, the peak and finally the decline due to commercialism.

Blogger Laramie Hirsch November 12, 2018 3:51 PM

I'll miss seeing his face in the movies.

Blogger SemiSpook37 November 12, 2018 4:01 PM

We all knew it was coming. And while not a Marvel guy growing up, man was a giant. Will never be replaced...especially with the complete cluster-f of award winners that are running the show now.

He was a piece of all our childhoods. RIP Stan.

Blogger Pierre Truc November 12, 2018 4:06 PM

I can't imagine how he felt seeing the industry he worked all his life to build being torn apart by SJWs.

RIP Stan.

Blogger Emmanuel Mateo-Morales November 12, 2018 4:12 PM

Good. Hope he burns in hell where he belongs.

Blogger James Dixon November 12, 2018 4:14 PM

While I'll always respect Kirby more, Stan Lee was the man that built Marvel to what it once was. It's probably better that he's gone than he see what's going to happen to it.

Quote attributed to Stan Lee at Comicon; "Stand'em all up against a wall and hand me machine gun!

These aren't my fans!"

@9: With CGI, Stan, or at least Stan's visage, will be with us for a long, long time.

R.I.P I was never a comics guy, but I feel for him and his fans. At least he doesn't have to witness comics getting worse anymore.

He really went south quickly, after his wife died.

Blogger S1AL November 12, 2018 5:18 PM

Nah, Jack Kirby died and Stan Lee just took credit for it...

RIP, and the last vestiges of The comics industry of yesteryear with you

Blogger Josh Randle November 12, 2018 5:20 PM

RIP to the legend. But now its time for a new legend in the comics and comic book film industry. Will Vox Day become the new stan lee? Perhaps we will get just as excited about Vox Day cameos in the Arkhaven Cinematic Universe films!

Blogger lubertdas November 12, 2018 5:30 PM

Wow... I was driving when I heard the news and despite his age, it was a shock...

Along with Robert A. Heinlein, Stan Lee probably inspired more people with his writing than just about any other 20th Century figures...

Godspeed, Stan "The Man" Lee...

Don't put it past Disney to CGI him in there. Although they'll probably make him Black...

Blogger YIH November 12, 2018 5:33 PM

What happened to Stan is something common to very long time married couples (in this case, 70+ years) one spouse dies (Stan's wife, about a year ago) and the other one goes downhill fast. With the passing of Barbara, don't be surprised if George I passes away sooner than later.

Blogger electricsheeple November 12, 2018 5:39 PM

RIP Stan Lee. @14 What did Jack Kirby ever accomplish without Stan Lee? A lot of wrestlers who couldn't draw a dime are jealous of Hulk Hogan, and you see similar hate for Stan Lee in the comic industry.

Blogger Matt November 12, 2018 5:40 PM

Kirby was naive and downright stupid with his work. Giving drawings away, etc. He was a terrible businessman. His wife had to make sure he was on the straight and narrow. Stan Lee didn't take credit for anything he didn't do.

Blogger Wolfman at Large November 12, 2018 6:31 PM

The way honor Stan Lee is to burn down the entire rest of the establishment comic industry and create a funeral pyre worthy of a Viking King.

SemiSpook37 wrote:man was a giant. Will never be replaced.
And damn good thing too. Stan was good at rustling up money, and almost nothing else. What few stories he actually wrote were the worst sort of bilge, and most of what he's credited for was the work for better and more talented men.

Stan Lee was not a giant. He was a drunken bullshit artist who cared little for quality and nothing at all for his artists or his audience.

Blogger matveidaniilovich November 12, 2018 6:48 PM

He whispered in my ear before he died, "I am comicsgate!"

@electricsheeple you know how it's common among nerd groups to hate certain people without being realistic about it.

See: Tesla is revered while Edison is hated, like Kirby is revered and Stan Lee is not as loved. Read a good biography of Tesla and you learn quickly that Tesla was an absolute terrible businessman after 1905 or so, and very angry when no one liked his ideas.

Typical Stan Lee Villains:
Leap Frog
Stilt Man
Captain Boomerang
Turner D. Century
Sugar Man

And let us never forget the long long list of "I"ve got a deadline and I need a villain, what's on my desk that I could use for a theme:"
Paste Pot Pete
Calendar King
Rainbow Raider
The Living Eraser
Typeface
and many many more.

RIP Stan, loved the art style of classic Marvel.

Blogger Tee Stoney November 12, 2018 8:49 PM

Created legends. You will be remembered, sir. Excelsior!

Blogger Ingot9455 November 12, 2018 8:56 PM

As the recent articles have reported, Lee's daughter is an airhead SJW who's getting rooked out of her money by her entourage and spending beyond even her great means. So after the legal issues pan out, expect to read an article about how she's destitute and living in the gutter a few years from now.

Blogger The Pitchfork Rebel November 12, 2018 11:11 PM

I realize he was old, but the Big Bang Theory is starting to have a body count rivaling the Clintons.

Losing the remnant resevoirs of quality and memory of what America was like when it was still Great from Stan Lee's senescent generation is going to be disproportionately destabilizing. F

If you worship Mammon -- like those astroturfing his research to this day -- this is a fair assessment.

Blogger Technomad November 14, 2018 1:35 AM

Somebody above mentioned Turner D. Century. It always seemed to me that with the right writers, Turner could actually be a very effective villain. Just give him a real love of and talent for building "steampunk" gadgetry, and preferably a female companion for the back of his bicycle-built-for-two. As it was, with writers who were phoning in their work, he was pretty lame.
