Mailvox: a tale of two Marvels

WP explains the current Marvel situation:
There were two Marvel comics universes. (For simplicity I'll say two though that is not accurate.)  One was the main one and one was the ULTIMATE universe which was meant to be a more gritty version which started in the year 2000.

The character Nick Fury was always a white man but in the ultimate version they made him a black man and they specifically made him look like Samuel L. Jackson. One could assume that they did this hoping to force the hand of higher-ups to cast Samuel L. Jackson for any future movies that were made.  That is what eventually happened.

Becoming the guy in charge of a 300 million dollar movie is hard.  Becoming the guy in charge of a comic book is much easier. Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury demonstrates that becoming the guy in charge of the comic can mean you decide how the 300 million dollar movie looks.

SJWs appear to have noticed this.  They made a WOKE replacement for all of the main Avengers.  Little black girl Iron Man, womyn Thor, Asian Hulk, black Captain America etc.

In recent years Marvel Comics seemed to want to force a female character to be their flagship character.  A big problem with this was that most of their female characters that people like were X-Men and Fox owned the movie rights to X-Men so those characters were neglected.  They decided to make Captain Marvel into their Wesley Crusher.

For reasons they also re-tooled Captain Marvel to be more repulsive and masculine, they did this repeatedly even though the comics were failures. With this in mind it's notable that a Captain Marvel movie got made at all - no one cares about this character or could reasonably expect it to be very profitable.

Guys like Robert Downey Jr. eventually have to age out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  It would appear that the SJWs knew that and created the WOKE replacement comics to be the source material for the 2.0 Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Which may explain why Disney is looking to eject the comics altogether, since they know that Marvel Comics (SJW edition) is not only NOT going to plant more movie seeds, but is actively attempting to control the movie products. After all, if Disney wants SJW versions of the IP it owns, it is perfectly capable of producing them on its own. Soy Wars (nee' Star Wars) is sufficient proof of that.

Locusts.

As usual the infiltrators aren't willing or able to do the heavy lifting to get a character to point that he is worth being gender-swapped. Film Marvel succeeded in part due to fifty years of work building up the IP. SJWs assume that they can replicate the results by filing off a few serial numbers and calling not-Hulk the Hulk or the not-Ghostbusters the Ghostbusters. When the real world doesn't work like the one in their heads, they have to find somebody that isn't them to blame so that they can move their plague on to another crop to devastate with a clear conscience.

Blogger JohnofAustria March 06, 2019 4:25 PM

Yup. That's been the case for a while now. It's also why they don't care about financial success in the comics, they just want to control the headspring for an intellectual property. Hence the constant wave of new woke storylines and transformations. And since the umbrella company makes stupid amounts of money, they can afford to (for now).

Are there cracks showing in the mass market entertainment business model? I hope so because I hate Brave New World but hope is not a plan.

Blogger tublecane March 06, 2019 4:31 PM

I can see SJWs trying to SJW the movies by altering the comics, sorta like polluting a river to screw your neighbors downstream. But this is what they'd be doing it there were no movies, right? It's all they know.

Blogger Grime Knight March 06, 2019 4:32 PM

Disney knows it's downhill after End Game ironically. Even the Russo brothers who directed some of the better Marvel movies are out after both Avenger flicks so hey, anything that paves the way for the Alt-Hero Cinematic Universe is good in my book!

Blogger Spud March 06, 2019 4:36 PM

Just like with video games, people watch movies and read comics to escape reality, not to be lectured on how to be a better person. Is Disney starting to realize that if you get woke you go broke? I doubt it, but you can only lose so much money until you do not have any more.

Blogger Laramie Hirsch March 06, 2019 4:50 PM

Get woke, go broke.

I don't see myself giving two farts about the MCU after this last Avengers installment.

The way things are going with the competition Vox could very well turn into the next Walt Disney. I'm not even remotely joking about that either. I'm guessing in the next 5-10 years there will be a constant source of books/comics/film/shows/games coming out or in production at both Arkhaven Studos/Comics, Castalia House and Alpenwolf. Are you prepared Vox to be more news worthy than ever?

The steady quality/sanity decline of Disney, Netflix Originals and so forth makes me wonder - what will happen to the physical infrastructure they built? As they decline, who will get the studios, the offices, the server farms, the parking lots? Will they burn assets rather than sell them to more productive people? Or, perhaps even worse than physical destruction, will they try to force any buyers to take on the blathering bluehairs as part of any sales? "You can have the sound-stages for the low-low price of a dollar, so long as you agree to take on the current staff and their cats, and maintain the dorito budget for their weekly smash-the-patriarchy-with-twinkies-poetry-slam!" When it's time to sell the skinsuit, how many parasites will they try to imbed in the sale?

It's going to be interesting to see how Captain Marvel does. Brie Larson is probably a 6 in most sexual markets unlike her Wonder Woman counter part who is a thoroughbred. So we have an average looking woman with no screen presence and resting bitch face.

Marvel has yet to make a bad movie (which is amazing bc they've made a lot of movies) and my guess is they've salvaged this into something decent, in spite of the lead actor being an unlikable cunt.

Audiences seem to want to see The Hero's Journey over and over again, but the SJW hero can't have flaws, and so she can't pull off the step where her abilities/character are tested and found wanting. A character that goes from high point to high point is boring, the Larson's lack of charisma won't help.

We'll finally get to see if marketing and distribution muscle alone can make this brick fly. In my neighborhood if you want to see a different movie on Friday you have to go to a downmarket theater where your pants are gonna stick to the seat as you get up to leave. That alone will sell Captain Marvel tickets to people who are just looking for something to see in a nice theater.

If Disney wanted to put Literally Wu as Nick Fury, they absolutely would. What happened in the comics would be wholly immaterial. Marvel got away with black Nick Fury because Samuel Jackson is popular for a Tarantino celebrity.

Disney junked a lot of Expanded Universe history, set before and after the Star Wars movies, in order to clear the deck for their own properties. They won't hesitate to order a full-on reboot of the entire Marvel universe if that's what it takes to secure their golden goose, and given the state of comic book writing they'll be pleased as pie to get rid of the more irritating legacy writers.

Whether their own convergence ends up destroying them is a separate matter entirely.

Blogger tublecane March 06, 2019 7:57 PM

@13- Disney is a start, but I want the next Rockefeller or Morgan to be on my side. Or dare I dream Rothschild.

@19- Larson is not especially attractive, but Wonder Woman looks like a trannie. Which is why she was a high fashion model.

The reviews are starting to trickle in and they aren't that impressive. 83% for a feminist movie that Disney is backing to the hilt is surprisingly low.

And a lot of those positive reviews are saying just enough nice things in the beginning and the end to qualify as a good reviews but if you look in the middle you will find a lot complaints about the character of Carol Danvers.

Simple stories are usually the most compelling and long lasting. Aesop’s fables still ring true today despite first being told to goat herder’s sons three thousand years ago. When you look at good story, “tell me about a guy who…” Is always at the heart of it.

Carol Danvers is about a tomboy with resting bitch face who accidently becomes the most powerful being in existence.

This is fundamentally a bad story.

No one really wants to see a story about a woman who is the most powerful man in the universe.

According to a Twitter thread when the RT score was 89%, there was fudging involved. RT did take down the audience interest score before release, so converged.

Metacritic at that same time gave a score of 68%, a 20% inflation.

If RT didn't fix their algorithms and are giving a 83% now, then the real score is probably closer to 63%. A D grade.

If Disney roots out the SJW's, they kill off their remaining fanbase and destroy their ideas for the next generation. If they don't root out the SJW's, they will continue to alienate the general populace for at least two generations. They can't win, but they CAN limit the damage.

At some point we're going to say that the "real" critic rating is 10% objective, 90% politics, right? Can anything happen before anyone here takes Rotten Tomatoes seriously? I'd sooner get my movie ratings from RT.com.

Brilliant point and seems so obvious once you've made it like that. Simply put: once the current MCU has run its course (and it basically has now) there is NOTHING of value to mine in the last 20 years of Marvel comics. Interestingly, though, I saw that Marvel revived its Conan titles, and it seems to as un-PC as the Conan of old.

The Superhero flick genre is probably coming to it's natural drop-off point. Movie genres do that - they're hot for a while, get over-exposed, and something new comes along. Westerns, Spy thrillers, Musicals, Noir... they've all taken their turn at the top.

That doesn't mean they stop getting made or stop making money - there's still room for a few well-made ones. It just means the volume will decrease.

And Marvel will die.

Should give Arkhaven some maneuver room.

Blogger Jo K March 07, 2019 12:04 AM

Bah humbug. I want to see new characters and new stories. New ideas. It's like a handful of people came up with some stuff generations ago, and now we just keep retelling versions of what our ancestors imagined once upon a time.

There are plenty of people with plenty of creative ideas. Enough mining the past.

Bah humbug.

I've seen her in Room and Kong and she's a perfectly adequate actress. This whole SJW persona came out after she was cast as Captain Marvel. These people have a gun to their head and everything they say publicly is some stipulation in some contract they signed. So the whole "unlikeable cunt" aspect is a marketing strategy, make no mistake.

Look at Mark Hamill. One of the most influential cultural icons ever. First the face of Star Wars, then the voice of Joker, then the face of Star Wars again. There are numerous videos out there of him basically bad mouthing the new Star Wars saying stuff like "it's just a movie" and "I don't like the direction it's going". Luke got unceremoniously killed and Mark will probably never work for Disney again.

I have also heard Owen talk about how Chris Pratt was basically forced into backing up James Gunn. Disney has been dealing with rhetoric longer than any of us have been alive so I don't trust their casting "mistakes" for a second.

It's a shame Mel Brooks stopped making movies. They used to say you knew a genre was dead when Brooks made the parody.

There are plenty of people with plenty of creative ideas.

They just don't work for major Hollywood studios.

Modern SJW filmmakers are cargo cultists. They plug in elements that they've seen work in past movies, without the context that made them work, and then wonder why the cargo planes full of adoring fans don't land on them. "It was cool when the Falcon swooped in at the end of Star Wars, and when Luke tossed away his lightsaber in Jedi, so our movie will have those things happen too. Never mind that they won't have the same impact, or even make sense, because they won't have emerged naturally from the story, and our themes, tone, and context are completely different. You just didn't like it because you're a nostalgic manchild."

Phase 4:

She-hulk with Melissa McCarthy. Every time she’s on her period, Hulk’s cousin undergoes some changes.

Black Iron Womyn starring Will Smith’s trans son and Leslie Jones. Building off of whichever movie had some angry black woman confront Tony Stark, the new Iron Man is raised by xer angry black Auntiee to strike down the white villains.

Vagina Thor starring Kate McKinnon as a ball busting wielder of the biggest hammer in the nine realms.

I remember seeing the first Captain America (Marvel/Disney) movie and thinking "huh, so they have Cap rescuing Fury's Howling Commandos. Where is Nick?". In the original comics Fury and his commandos also started off in WWII fighting the Nazis. White Nick went on to take his commando team into the new organization named Shield. When Captain America was thawed out he met the older grizzled Nick that he had known back in the war and still had some of his commandos along. Sam Elliot would have been a better fit than Samuel Jackson.

Blogger Wuzzums Fuzzums March 07, 2019 10:21 AM

@39

Black Nick Fury and White Nick Fury are completely different characters which is why they look and act fundamentally different. Black NF is a story device linking all the characters together. White NF is a character in of itself. One is glue for the larger plot, the other is the Full Metal Jacket drill sergeant on steroids.

If Black NF would have been given a different name they would also have to explain where Nick Fury was and you can't have White NF overshadow the actual main characters.

Blogger Athelstane March 07, 2019 10:51 AM

The reviews are starting to trickle in and they aren't that impressive. 83% for a feminist movie that Disney is backing to the hilt is surprisingly low.

And a remarkable number of those reviews RT classifies as "fresh" look mildly rotten, if anything (not that this is anything new for RT to do, alas). Honestly, the real rating probably belongs down in the 50's.

Meanwhile, Metacritic has it at only 65, which is well under even the new How to Train Your Dragon movie.
