The Rose Windows survived

Amazing. Another bit of good news concerning Notre Dame: all three Rose Windows survived:
Haunting new photos of Notre Dame's interior reveal how it survived the inferno after it was revealed three of its iconic Rose Windows escaped damage, as detectives probe the renovation work which may have led to the blaze.

The pictures revealed the golden crucifix and altar were preserved amongst the smouldering rubble after the roof was destroyed by Monday night's fire.

Three 'irreplaceable' Rose Windows, which date to the 13th century and were last night feared to have melted or exploded, were intact.

A miracle. To be in that otherwise dimly lit cathedral on a sunny day with those windows aglow is truly one of life's great glories. May I live long enough to see them once again. May this fire rekindle a new spirit in us.

Blogger Ahărôwn April 16, 2019 1:23 PM

Most of the stone vaulting survived too. The roof burned off, taking the spire with it, but the rest of the church is basically intact, minus smoke and water damage.

Notre Dame will be repaired. I hope the French take this as a sign and return to their faith.

Blogger Bellomy April 16, 2019 2:14 PM

This is an incredible job by the firefighters. Just a few hours ago French officials were reporting the building as completely destroyed.

Now the structure stands. The relics and paintings were nearly all rescued. Somehow, some way, the Rose windows survived (incredibly). The stained glass windows in the nave survive. The Great Organ is covered in debris but took no damage from fire or water.

This is not only a testament to the firefighters, but medieval architecture. While the upper, wooden roof fell the lower stone roof did not.

And it was designed in just such a way as to protect the Cathedral from fire. 100s of years later and it saved the Cathedral from exactly that.

Amazing.

Hebrews 10:26-29:
If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?
.

Matthew 7 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

6 “Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.
13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

Good helps those who help themselves. Those 12th century stonemasons weren't dummies. The design of the cathedral helps minimise the damage when the roof catches fire. When you're building for eternity, you assume bad shit will happen, eventually.

In some ways, it was a more civilized time.

Seeing native wealthy French step up in the funding could also be a key development. There will be a hidden battle hear to establish who gets to 'put their fingerprints' on the renovation.

What the West needs is disentanglement from foreign money, usually due to massive debt and pure greed. If France goes this way, and the no-go zones receive prime attention, cutting off their financing with close monitoring of outside contributions is essential.

Blogger cecilhenry April 16, 2019 3:08 PM

Very relieved the interior is largely intact.

I wonder about the restoration. ND de Paris is the city's most visited tourist site. Will they be stupid and crass enough to "build something new and better," as I heard an American tourist say yesterday? IT's hard to put anything past these Philistines, but knowingly changing the #1 tourist attraction in the city? The Germans restored the Frauenkirche in Munich to its former condition. You cant tell--or I can't--that what you see there is not original, except for the 1945-vintage photos just inside the Great West Portal. Amazing. The French can do that. Surely they will.

As they stated "we no longer have the technology to go to the moon", we certainly don't have the faith to rebuild Notre Dame - and the latter statement is 100% truthful.

Blogger Shadowfax April 16, 2019 5:41 PM

Just was at my mother's and saw her today's local daily newspaper edition: no mention of Notre Dame. Appearently they had finished accepting stories yesterday too early for that, and didn't bother to go out of their way when something important happened after curfew. No wonder they sink to irrelevancy…

In my personal reaction, I observe a change: as a mixed evangelical / pentecostal Christian, I used to be pretty critical of old organized religious symbols like Notre Dame, supposing them to be symbols of what I would now call the ‘cucked church’. And I don’t believe in the relics, so I looked down on those who do. No more of that: no matter where Catholicism stands today, this is part of the genuinely Christian heritage, and therefore something I root for, independently of how it may have been abused in the past. Those pictures of the light on the cross in the ruined church are truly mind-boggling. In response, I humbly bow my head in prayer.

Yes. As explained in this tweet, the stone vaulting held most of the fire. The aerial photos made it look as if the church was burning to the ground inside the walls, but most of it was trapped up in the vaulting.

Even so, it is amazing that the stone vaulting withstood the collapse of hundreds of tons of burning beams, many of them 12X12" or more in size. Testament to a time when architecture was not just minimalized risk calculations, but serious skill and workmanship at every level.

These French and Italian fashion houses are often accused by YouTube InfluencersTM of racism for having high security. Don't know what kind of alchemy makes a bag check a racist policy but I doubt the houses will change for people who just kick tires. Besides, if I'm going to a shop I want to know I'm safe, the clerks are safe, and my items are safe if they're in the shop for repairs. Duh. Clothes should be vibrant not the window shopper base.

Some of the fashion houses specialize in hunting accessories and baggage. Very salt of the earth.

Last century many fashion houses were deeply involved with nationalism. It's kind of neat how fashion as fleeting is intertwined with the timeless folkways of a people.

Years ago, I spent two weeks in France, and of course made the obligatory stops at Chartes, Mont St. Michel, and Notre Dame.

It's stone work that keep these cathedrals upright, and even though the walls are thin, the stone buttreses hold them up. A fire, even a conflagraton like this, could never see the structure collapse. Only an explosion, particularly one than took out the buttresses, would truly obliterate the cathedral.

The Oak roof, as an oak roof, can never be replaced. Trees providing that thickness of wood are no longer available.

Even when renovated, the cathedral will remain majestic.

Great video. 11:30 to 14:00 has good content about Hungary vs the IMF and EU.

20:47 to 21:38 is below. It follows what Vox and Martin van Creveld have said.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, today Europe is threatened my mass population movement, because when such a mass of people sets out from its homeland to settle elsewhere on another continent, it’s not simply a migration crisis, but mass population movement. One could venture to say that in all human history never has there been a time when migration has occurred on a scale that we’re talking about today.

Ladies and Gentlemen, whether we like it or not , we must face the fact that mass population movement has never been peaceful. When huge masses of people are looking for a new home, the unfortunate and inevitable consequence is conflict, because they usually want to occupy territory where people are already living and settled, and are capable of defending their homes, culture, and way of life."
