That looked so delicious. Great episode.

Looks like heaven in box, for sure! It's so hard to find GOOD butchers in a lot of places in the States... I can order grass-fed sirloins, from Costco of all places and they're VERY good, but to get, say, Mangalitsa ham.... much more difficult! Anyone who has NOT watched Barcelona Life -- do so before there are so many you'll have trouble catching up. THANKS Vox for getting Farley and Elizabeth to do these!

Why is the video quality and color quality so high compared to HD food network snd lifestyle programming?

Surely you can't be using more expensive equipment and lighting than a cable network, or are you?

Spanish sun, baby.

Surely you can't be using more expensive equipment and lighting than a cable network, or are you?

That would be almost literally impossible. One Go-Pro, no lighting.

grass fed sirloin? do not dumb here. not dumb area. grass fed beef is garbage we sell to dumb hippies

Blogger Dave May 19, 2019 3:56 PM

Thanks, been enjoying these. Fun to see the local architecture and terrain. What's the price $ US/lb? for the best with acorns, of course. Italians know a thing or two when it comes to curing hams, obviously. We may need to see a taste-off.

Is the plan to let subscribers comment on these in the future?

I have a small request too; stop automatically playing the previous video in the series when I finish watching one. Often, I'll want to go back and re-watch a segment of the video and usually I've already seen the previous video anyway.

Two finest pieces of red meat I have ever enjoyed were two ribeyes from a grass finished bison, hands down the best.

For whatever reason, all the grass-fed beef I have ever bought from local vendors is a darker red and has a better flavor than any globo beef I can find in supermarkets.

I had two chest freezers full of local bison meat when we were forced to evacuate from a brush fire.

Blogger Mr.MantraMan May 19, 2019 5:10 PM

Those two ribeyes came from a place with a great production and harvesting model but the owner is such a lefty lunatic author that I in good conscious cannot recommend the place.

The key word is "finished", "grass" as Nates says is just hippy bait, and I say that as a man who dislikes CAFOs, they are horrible, and I'm a hypocrite.

Rex were they grass finished and harvested quickly off the pasture/range?

And Joel Salatin editor of "The Stockman Grass Farmer" and all around gadfly for farming brags on acorn fed pork from Spain, and even encourages American farmers to take that model up.

Blogger Dave May 19, 2019 6:18 PM

RLK, didja lose the two freezers full of bison? It pains me just to think of losing that much meat, especially bison. Nothing really to be done I suppose, who's going to the trouble of storing frozen goods long-term underground or in a bomb shelter.

Lovely photography (and of course the content is great), but the audio could use some polish. Could barely hear any of the voices, compared to the level intro/outro music. Also, a copy of RX 7 (or earlier) from iZotope would do wonders for reducing the air conditioner (?) noise in the shop allowing the dialog to be heard much better.

Blogger Nate May 19, 2019 7:00 PM

people.. grass fed beef has a much lower fat content. it is not better. if you like it better personally you're an aberration. people think it is better because it is different and it often costs more. in reality it is cheaper and easier to produce and it is shit. the best beef is always finished on corn. period.

Blogger P Glenrothes May 19, 2019 7:22 PM

Grass fed beef is raised in cooler coastal climates with less crowded conditions by Mom and Pop ranchers. For many reasons, it is superior to beef raised by large corporate conglomerates in dry, hot, over crowded inland cesspools, regardless of feed.

Blogger SidVic May 19, 2019 7:57 PM

Nate you know your beef. Thank you sir. Kobe rules.

Blogger Primus Pilus May 19, 2019 8:07 PM

This was an instant watch once I saw "Jamon" and "Ibericus" in the thumbnail.

Blogger Mr.MantraMan May 19, 2019 8:18 PM

Beef is finished on carbs

shh. You have no idea what you're talking about. Grass fed beef is produced by the exact same people that produce other beef. its cheap and easy. So literally everyone does it because the profit margin is higher... if you can deal with the fact that the cows get sick more often and have a terrible time putting on weight... because guess what? cows didn't evolve eating just grass. They ate all kinds of stuff... including grain. so they have a hard time getting enough protein from grass alone.

Listen... you clearly have been talking to idiot hipsters. Stop talking to idiot hipsters. Go talk to a rancher.

Blogger Nate May 19, 2019 8:38 PM

last cow we raised and had processed... it was at the processor waiting to be picked up. dude came in and asked the processor for grass fed beef. The processor told him that grass fed beef was garbage and he wouldn't like it. So the dude argued with him. The processor pulled out a grass fed grass finished steak... then pulled out one from my cow... which was grass fed corn finished.

Processor:"which one of these looks better?"

Customer: "Well that one has tons of marbling and looks awesome. this one has no marbling at all."

Processor: Excellent. Now you know that you don't really want grass fed beef.

Blogger Nate May 19, 2019 8:39 PM

Times like this... I sincerely miss Farmer Tom

Blogger JGP May 19, 2019 8:40 PM

What I like about these episodes is that it reminds us that though the day is dark it is still possible to have good times with good people. It cheers me up.

Blogger Nate May 19, 2019 8:46 PM

and lets go beyond fat content. Did you know grass fed cows take twice as long to hit market weight?

Now... quiz time... what is more tender... a young cow or an old cow?

if you said a young cow... you get a gold star. If you said an old cow... you're an idiot hipster.

Blogger P Glenrothes May 19, 2019 10:11 PM

Nate, I graciously accept your ad hominem form of surrender.

Blogger P Glenrothes May 19, 2019 10:29 PM

Every butcher knows there is profit in selling fat at meat prices.

Blogger Nate May 19, 2019 10:32 PM

"Nate, I graciously accept your ad hominem form of surrender."

you're dumber than I first assumed.

listen midwit... I get that you heard someone say one time that if someone resorted to an insult they had lost the debate. You thought it sounded clever and so you adopted it. Because you assumed if you did someone would also think you were clever.

here's the problem. its bullshit.

Idiot: 2 plus 2 is 7!

Nate: No it isn't you moron. its four. look at your fingers. count them. idiot.

Idiot: HURR!!! YOU INSULTED ME THAT MEANS I AM RIGHT AND YOU ARE WRONG HURRRR!!!!

Nate: 2 plus 2 is still 4. You're still an idiot.

And... Mr P. Glenrothes… a gamma bitch name if ever I saw one... So are you.

Blogger Avalanche May 19, 2019 10:52 PM

@5 "grass fed sirloin? do not dumb here"

Oh Nate, do your research. Cows are NOT mean to eat grain; they're meant to eat grass. Grain diets make cows ILL. Sick unto death! But since we kill 'em off sooner -- they get fatter quicker on grain, sell 'em earlier -- it's "okay" to feed them food that makes them sick.

Look up the nutritional diffs between grass-fed and grain-fed meat; not enough to make a big different in human health,. but grass-fed tastes WAY better than grain-fed!

Blogger Jack Amok May 19, 2019 10:54 PM

Every butcher knows there is profit in selling fat at meat prices.

The fat is considerably more important for your overall health. The meat's important too, but the fat contains complex organic compounds your body needs and can only manufacture marginal amounts of, since our metabolism is supposed to function with high-quality animal fat intake.

Blogger Avalanche May 19, 2019 10:55 PM

@Rex Leroy King

Grass-fed beef or bison looks and tastes better because that’s what the animal is designed to eat. I much prefer the flavour of grass-fed—the finest steak of my life was a 16-oz grass fed bison ribeye I ate in Montana. But not everyone agrees. I’ve had several conversations with Texans who stand by corn-fed beef as the best.

Blogger JGP May 20, 2019 8:17 PM

I have to say, followers of Vox are extraordinarily contentious people! Your response to a video celebrating one of the pleasures of life in sunny Barcelona has turned into a knock down drag out debate about the quality of grass fed versus corn fed beef - complete with insults. Get a grip, people.
