Hollywood trying to make law

Georgia would do well to tell Hollywood that any corporation that tries interfering with its laws will no longer be eligible for tax incentives.
Bob Iger said it would be “very difficult” for Disney to keep filming in Georgia if the state enacts a new abortion law. In an interview with Reuters, the CEO of the Walt Disney Co. said he had doubts the company would continue production in Georgia if the controversial ban on abortion in the state comes into effect, primarily as the company's employees would be against it.

“I think many people who work for us will not want to work there, and we will have to heed their wishes in that regard. Right now we are watching it very carefully,” Iger told Reuters.

The exec added that if the law does come into effect, he didn't "see how it’s practical for us to continue to shoot there."

Disney's prospective withdrawal from production in Georgia would be a huge blow to the state. Recently, Disney's Marvel Studios filmed portions of both Black Panther and Avengers: Endgame in Georgia.

On May 7, Georgia's Republican Gov. Brian Kemp signed the "fetal-heartbeat bill," which bans abortion as early as six weeks into pregnancy. The legislation, as well as similar moves in Alabama and other states to ban abortion, has caused a furious backlash in Hollywood and led to calls to boycott those states.

Disney, through Iger, is the latest company to wade into the controversy. Earlier this week, Netflix said it would fight Georgia's abortion law and would "rethink" its operations there should the law go into effect.
All Iger's stupid threat makes me think is that abortion opponents should go after Florida next. Let's see if Disney is converged enough to shut down Disney World.

How is it "not practical" to continue filming stuff in Georgia? Were they exclusively making documentaries about abortion?

Netflix will fight the abortion law?

It’s not as though this hasn’t been happening all along. It’s out in the open, now. Easier to fight it.

And maybe, just possibly, easier to show those who previously would not see.

Have too? I think you're misunderstanding the relationship between an employee and their employer, Bob.

And I'm sure there a plenty of aspiring actors who would be happy to work Georgia for their chance to break into the business.

Blogger Steve Canyon May 30, 2019 6:28 AM

I seem to recall after WW2 the US Government imposed an excess profits tax on the defense industries on profits in excess of what was considered normal. Georgia would do well to do the same on all entertainment industries for revenues in excess of what was considered normal. Not profits. Revenues.

Blogger Nym Coy May 30, 2019 6:31 AM

Hm. If Disney is blaming their employees' opinions, perhaps they should hire people with family values and fire all the mad hoes.

Actually Disney's employees should feel very safe in Georgia, because
they are older than six weeks, so nobody there is allowed to kill them in spite of their mental disabilities.

Are we to understand that people who work for Disney and who travel around as part of that work would be unwilling to set foot in a state that bans abortion?

It’s out in the open, now.

Yes. As long as there was no threat to Roe from either party, they could pretend to see abortion as an unfortunate, necessary evil, hiding behind terms like Bill Clinton's "safe, legal, and rare." Now that they see their satanic sacrament under attack for real, they're being much more honest about it, openly calling it a good thing, urging white women to abort, and trying to get racial exceptions. It's really flushed them out into the light.

For everyone's lifetime, in the USA people moved to jobs. This is often cited as a reason per capita wealth was higher in the USA than in Europe: a better match of capability with earning opportunities.

This cosmopolitan rootlessness was a Northern/coastal ethos and found its apotheosis in people moving from Hyderabad or Shanghai to San Francisco. Our "tech magic" consumer crap, produced by now-fabulously wealthy migrant aliens, resulted. It rested on a near-complete homogenization of social norms (lowest common denominator.)

Now we see a nascent counter-trend. States are moving toward very different legal norms, reflecting the underlying truth: There was never widespread acceptance of those "new" social norms. The last 50 years were a war of a peculiar set of people jamming their preferences down the throats of a largely unwilling populace, whose members were either complacent or grudging.

State by state, we witness abandonment of that "muddy middle" ground (which was actually radical and intolerable in most cases) with some states scuttling those widely intolerable legalisms (abortion on demand, naked violations of the 2nd amendment and soon, forced association from the (un)civil rights act's inversion of the 1st amendment) while other states double-down on the Progressivist/Utopian/Universalist insanity with abandon. [Ex: Illinois is about to radically increase costs and hassles on its citizens who own or wish to own firearms, following the example of NJ and some other Leftist cesspit states.]

Increasingly, a man will have to make a choice about a job based on its location. Climate, school quality, crime rates, etc. are going to take a back seat to the dominant political ideology. It will soon no longer be firearm manufacturers that choose to relocate based on the political climate of the state in which they're located.

The USA is breaking up. We're watching it in real time. The convenience of a single, relatively tolerable system our ancestors enjoyed (and on which we coasted these past 50 years as it morphed into Cthulhu) is gone. What's coming is inconvenience first, and ultimately hardship and danger until we all self-segregate into geographically separate, homogeneous communities.

States can always follow their example wrt abortion. A reqired background check, a minimum of a three month waiting period, a may issue license to get one, a may issue license to provide them, and a yearly licensing fee for both parties. Something like $10K (in advance) if you want to be able to get an abortion that year and $1M/year to provide them ought to be reasonable. Common sense abortion control. If it saves the life of just one child...

Like, most of my readers will know by now that I spent a considerable amount of time in Hollywood, trying to work my way through the ranks, only to be stifled by the identity politics quickly taking root out there during the Obama years.

But the second I read this, I almost jumped out of my chair. I knew immediately that #DirectorAnon wasn't LARPing, because of this post alone.

It's almost hard for me to explain to people who haven't lived and experienced anything out there, but film and TV are basically a two-tiered caste-system.

You have people who are "Above the Line" and people who are "Below the Line."

Those above, are the head-honchos. The director, the actors, the writers, the producers. They're called "above the line" because… basically, they get access to royalties and such in their contracts.

Everyone below the line – the crew, the gaffers, the technicians, etc… They're all paid hourly. It's real grunt-work, but it's the kind of stuff that has to get done, in order for a production to happen. After all, someone has to build the sets, set up the lights, rig up the mics, have craft services ready for when everyone gets hungry, etc, etc, etc.

and IATSE is THE union controlling all these guys.

Every single studio production, be it film or TV, works with IATSE labor. That's just the way it works out in Hollywood. Every studio is legally bound to use them.

And IATSE guys are like… 90-95% white.

IE: The exact demographic its okay for all these monied, soft-handed execs like Franklin Leonard to hate on so much.

What DirectorAnon is proposing here is a mass IATSE walkout.
...
Many people need to realize: Politics is DOWNSTREAM from culture.

When it all comes crashing down they'll flee like rats to their (utopia). Until that day you can be sure they will spew their inhumanity and continue to destroy all we hold sacred. Since the mid-60's the Catholic Church has been converged. Believe it or not this was the only organization that kept the heathens at bay. Nowadays the oligarchs have the avante guard de jour immigrants, homosexuals, rabid feminists do their dirty work. I know the gates of hell will not prevail but sometimes it is mind-boggling to see how these people have turned humanity into a tide of soulless mindless people. Except that last time there were a few hard men who had to dedicate considerable resources to defeat Johnny Reb, but this time the invaders would be full of women and incompetent non-Americans. Well said. And this is how a collection of "States" was always meant to be, before Lincoln. To borrow from a Star Wars quote, "before the dark times (the U.S. Constitution's 14th amendment giving personhood to corporations), before the Empire" (the Imperial Empire that is the U.S. now). A collection of autonomous States, sovereign in economics and culture, separate from the collective.

From Article 2 of the Articles of Confederation:
Each state retains its sovereignty, freedom, and independence, and every Power, Jurisdiction and right, which is not by this confederation expressly delegated to the United States, in Congress assembled.

Blogger DonReynolds May 30, 2019 11:46 AM

Each and every state that is subject to boycott from entertainment firms must know that the boycott could easily swing both ways. Anytime you decide to go to war with a US state because you do not like their social mores or laws of the state legislature, you also lay bare your own business to taxation or outright ban in that state.

Netflix has already declared war on Georgia, while at the same time pocketing the generous subsidies the state pays them. I can imagine a hefty tax on Netflix customers or an outright ban on Netflix for being at war with the state of Georgia. The same with Alabama and any other state. Disney has quite a bit of property involved in Georgia and elsewhere. The states involved might consider a ban on cable and satellite channels that are boycotting the state for exercising their sovereign rights and authorities as a US state. Such firms are certainly guilty of racketeering and extortion, undue influence, interference in the legislative process, restraint of trade, and probably the chain store act.

Slap a ban on the sale of goods and services everywhere in the state of any firm that is boycotting the state. If Disney and Netflix and anyone else wants to boycott the state of Georgia, the state should help them by making that boycott complete and both ways. Then they can say they are boycotting a US state.

Blogger Chris Ritchie May 30, 2019 11:48 AM

The theatre, and by extension now TV, Hollywood, and the rest, were never highly regarded in Christian circles. There were sermons preached against it in various times.

The Puritans: https://www.jstor.org/stable/986023?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents

Other sermons - I haven't looked in to these, but there are many sermons at this link about the theatre:
https://www.sermoncentral.com/sermons/sermons-about-theatre

I know I'm stepping on toes here. There may be some people who are actors or who have family or friends in that industry that are good people. Some may even be Christians. But I was surprised to learn that in the past actors had sometimes been considered to be of a low social status. So great has been the glorification of Hollywood in our own day that the deification of "Stars" was commonplace. The propaganda has been extremely effective.

#30 (DC) A single point of consideration. Unfortunately, it’s not North versus South. It’s a big chunk of the city versus a portion of the city and rural area around it. It’s city-states. Feudalism, in the most generic notion. Works Progress Administration, Federal Emergency Relief Administration, Federal Emergency Management Agency. That’s their doctrine, over and over again. Underclass, all over the world, time and again. Clinton raised the debt. Bush raised the debt. Obama raised the debt. See a pattern? Almost like a collapse is being built, almost like there is a general plan. One not being stopped, 2033.

The Civil War, the last (internal) war, the one people always prepare for. You’re looking at Sarajevo, dotted across the country. A multitude of Kosovo’s, in the areas of conflict. Neighbors burning down the houses of neighbors. With most people just focused on what most people focus on, day to day life, and day to day living as best they can. With the proliferation of nuclear weapons across the US and at sea, breaking apart the Federal in a time of trouble has certain difficult impediments. Which the Left would like to solve by handing over third party authentications and authorization to. So long as that is prevented, things are kept interesting.

Oilgarchs like Iger have been calling themselves "Masters of the Universe" for well over a decade now, but that's an interesting observation on where they may have picked up the term. Their use of the term increased after the great bailout of 2008, when they were deemed by their swamp-servants in Sodom-on-Potomac as "too big to fail" (also too big to jail). It's in keeping with Barnhardt's description of the 'Diabolical Narcissist'. They enjoy rubbing everyone's nose in the fact that they can get away with any crime even more than the commission of the crime itself.

Yet, despite the steaming heap of evidence in front of everyone's face, countless unsuspecting fools from Alabama churches who oppose abortion will go into debt to take their kids to Disney-World this summer - supporting enemies who want them dead. Would they do the same to make trip to Saudi Arabia? Where's the disconnect? It's like everyone is walking around in a trance....

@57 I concur. It's fascinating how much of history is myth.
1. The American Revolution occurred DESPITE American colonists living far better than their English cousins and despite Parliament repealing essentially all Acts to which colonists objected.

2. The form of government for which Americans fought and died was the Articles, and it was overturned in a naked coup-d'tat in Philadelphia.

This reminds us that (1) everything we're told is almost certainly a lie, (2) the broad swings of history express a kind of cycle and (3) we're all just ants, riding on leaves, drifting down a wide river. Nothing we do will change the course of the river, and if we exhaust ourselves paddling from side to side we're just as likely to paddle into the path before the rapids. What will be, will be.

Concentrating on distant people's actions in distant places (e.g., Mordor-on-the-Potomac) is largely a waste of time. For me, at least. It's too bad that it remains illegal (and impractical) to kill those who never tire in their efforts to manipulate and control others.

Would they do the same to make trip to Saudi Arabia? Where's the disconnect? It's like everyone is walking around in a trance....

They would make the trip to Saudi Arabia for the same reason they still shop at Wal-Mart and go to Disney. They don't follow Jesus or His standards. They follow the religion of Economic Pragmatism. They don't vote values with their dollars, just what is cheapest, regardless of who is selling it to them. I think they would buy soap from a convicted pedophile who has their daughter locked up in the back room, if it was .05 cents cheaper than the local retail business down the road.

This economic tyranny is what is keeping us under the thumb of the corporations who despise us. The sad thing is freedom is available by simply spending your dollars elsewhere. And if there isn't an alternative? Create one!!

So many Georgia laws (and a state flag) have been changed to accommodate business. I was surprised that the abortion law made it through over all the pressure.

I used to write letters to my Congressman and Senator in my idealistic 20's. After the fourth or fifth white paper response that not only refuted my argument but fully justified their untenable position, I realized that they were using paid staffers who had nothing better to do that research issues and come out with a decision that was favorable to the elected official or his corporate constituents. I never stood a chance. I was just pissed that our tax dollars are paying these staffers to figure out ways to pass laws against my own interests or those of my family and community.

PACs and Lobbyists have been the death knell for representative democracy. I would shoot them first. They are the root of the problem.

I stopped swimming upstream. I'm doing what I can in the lane God placed me in. But these discussions are crucial as I take them from the Interwebs here to friends and family in an effort to sway them to our side.

Literally, have been thought about this

Honest men can't be bought. Elect honest men and that problems solves itself. They can be killed though, so they must also be brave.

(and a state flag)

I still get a kick out of seeing the GA flag since it's an almost exact copy of the First National Flag of the CSA and none of the people who got anally pained at the old flag even realizes it. It's best to never cave, but if you're gonna cave, that's the way to do it. Kudos go to Mississippi for telling the pearl-clutchers to get bent.

I saw on the internet news where the Confederate flag is going back on the South Carolina state house on Tuesday.

Now that Nicki Haley is no longer governor, maybe the indigenous population of South Carolina will take back state government and start calling it South Carolina again.

I enjoy your comments dc but your conclusion is both debilitating and self-fulfilling. Every single person can make a difference and, collectively, we can dam the river.

As Screwtape wrote to his demon-in-training nephew on how to control his human charge, "Let him do anything but act."

@62 Chris Ritchie "I was surprised to learn that in the past actors had sometimes been considered to be of a low social status."

In the not too distant past "actress" was a euphemism for "prostitute". At least in the UK.
