A change of course

Gen. Flynn recants his confession:
Michael T. Flynn, the former national security adviser, backed off his planned testimony in a federal case against a former associate, according to court documents unsealed on Tuesday.

Mr. Flynn had previously admitted that he lied on foreign lobbying disclosure forms submitted to the Justice Department but now is blaming his former lawyers, accusing them of filing inaccurate forms without his knowledge. He did not dispute that the filing itself contained false information.

His latest gambit could provoke another dramatic and risky confrontation with the federal judge who delayed sentencing Mr. Flynn last year in a separate case so he could continue to cooperate with the government in the hopes of a lighter punishment. And it was the latest strange turn in a prosecution that should have run its course without much drama after Mr. Flynn pleaded guilty in December 2017 to lying to investigators and agreed to cooperate with the special counsel’s investigators.
The timing does tend to strike one as curious, to say the least.

"a prosecution that SHOULD HAVE run its course without much drama"

What, like morally? Because I'm no politico-legal expert, but even I knew it was a case of he said/he said at best and a strongarming as part of an elaborate coup plot at worst.

Back when he entered his plea, I remember people would look at you as though you were an escaped mental patient if you didn't think the book was closed. What, no plea has ever been set aside?

The storm is finally here?

Blogger Bialar July 09, 2019 9:08 PM

The past few weeks/months have seen the following sequence of events: Mueller Report drops, Flynn replaces legal team, NXVIM guilty verdict, second-largest container ship in the world which happens to be owned by JP Morgan gets seized with over a billion in coke on board, IG report delayed due to Steele and Kavalec interviews (at least), Epstein suddenly blows up, and now Flynn is perhaps making his move?

It certainly seems stormy out. I hope it's the real thing.

It's starting to feel like late 2017 again. Things we were expecting soon then are starting to happen now. Just wish I knew what caused the 1.5-year delay.

Blogger Rex Leroy King July 09, 2019 9:15 PM

We're going to get everything we expected, just on a slower timetable because of that useless Keebler Elf Sessions.

I can't read it, but I get the feeling that the NYT is stretching the truth about what's happening here. https://twitter.com/Techno_Fog/status/1148746428350652417

I wouldn't be so quick to blame Sessions. Much of what we are witnessing today was put into place by him. Meticulously, thoroughly and with every t crossed and i dotted. Insuring essentially an iron clad operation that that no slimy ((lawyer)) would be able to weasel their way out of.

A theory:
"Wind the clock back."
"Future proves past."

Possible implication:
Reorder the posts - they began with the juiciest.

Also,
1. Deep-seated enemies do tend to interrupt things and cause delays.
2. If Q is real, it's still a group of falible, however intelligent, human beings; and (as ignoble as this sounds), it serves Q's interest to keep up the hype despite delays and adjustments.

Q is real. As soon as Trump started making Q hand signs and then had Air Force One's transponder squawk Q0 (with 0 being where the + sign is on a phone dial) the question of Q was settled. Q is probably a team of exactly what they are repped out to be - NSA and military intelligence who know everything and can use none of that info because 4th Amendment. They are likely responsible for Trump starting his campaign.

And the real question has always been whether or not Q could deliver. Epstein is the first major evidence that they can, but is in no way a guaranty of victory. After all, the Big Beautiful Wall is now mild-steel tubing *barrier* that can be defeated by something as high tech as a Sawzall.

But as for the timing, I really do think the Q-team have an outline that they are trying to stick to for the eight years they have Trump, and major arrests of people like the Clintons are probably penciled in late enough to help Trump's re-election campaign to make sure that they have the full eight years to work with.

"His latest Gambit... ...the latest strange turn...."

Two uses of the adjective 'latest' in two consecutive sentences?

I wonder if that paragraph as originally drafted started out less loaded, for example, 'This change' or 'His new strategy,' but then some editor decided to increase the animus against Flynn.

Or maybe it's just me but the back to back uses of 'latest' seemed to violate good style and would be something NYT editors would normally catch and fix.

Agree 100% with you on this. And, not just because Jeff Sessions is so well thought of here in Alabama. I hope to live long enough to read the real and honest history of these times and people; people good and those evil.

This is surprising? I've been expecting it for months. I thought he was the guy whose case got taken over by a judge who's known for vacating falsely extorted pleas. Am I misremembering?

Blogger Archimedes2017 July 09, 2019 10:48 PM

In any corporate takeover it typically takes two years to evaluate the situation and get key people in place. There are the usual battles with the board ( Congress and The Supreme Court in this case) We are just getting to the 2 1/2 year mark in the Trump administration and I think he has done a great job setting the new direction.

The placeholder indictments are supposed to start filling up in August.

Note the timing of all this in relation to the election cycle. The drip, drip, drip, of revelations of the extent of corruption will permeate for the whole 15? months.

Blogger Doktor Jeep July 09, 2019 11:23 PM

Schools start opening around mid-August in the south. So he has roughly a month before the left gets their windup toy option to keep this off the news cycles.

I can't agree. I've worked with and even managed meticulous i-dotters and t-crossers who used the urgent need to dot more i's and cross more t's as an excuse not to act when the time came.

Nothing actually happened until after Sessions was gone. He should've been someone's assistant, not the head guy.

But hopefully we will see someone bring his work successfully to bear. Victories can have a thousand fathers, and Snoozy can be one them.

TL;DR Feds were and are playing legal games, like they have been shown to do over and over again.
Federal prosecutors especially really need some accountability, I have read about these sorts of prosecutorial shenanigans over and over again, and not one of them pays any sort of consequences for it.

OT, but seeking some clarification...I notice the Military has approved the Sig 9MM as it's new personal weapon. What I found interesting was that they also approved Winchester's 147 gr. HP as an acceptable ammo. I thought that was a Geneva Convention no-no. Does that open the door to use HP for battle rifles as well? (as if, they weren't being used on the sly, by all militaries)

Blogger Brett baker July 10, 2019 9:16 AM

Basically you can use hollowpoints for anything but uniformed enemy troops on the battlefield. Terrorists, insurgents, criminals, OK.

Blogger 351wsl July 10, 2019 9:42 AM

@23

1. It is the Hague Convention which prohibits the use of expanding bullets.

2. The United States is not a signatory, but has voluntarily followed it.

Blogger Clay July 10, 2019 9:58 AM

My bad about the Convention. So, we use HP today?

At this point, until I see some the coupsters pleading guilty to some crime, I am going to stick with my opinion, that a grand bargain is just around the corner. The grand bargain would be something like this: Trump will call off the dogs chasing down: Hillary, Bill, Comey, Brennen, Clapper, Yates, Lynch, Page, Obama and others and in return the Dems will drop their impeachment and other ploys. The Dems may even have to guarantee Trump, they will nominate someone he can beat, for a second term, to get him to stop his attack. Consequently, I could see this all just going away. The media pundits will stop talking about it. The politicians will quick talking about it. The investigations will be wrapped up. The legal cases will be quietly resolved. It will all be like it never happened.

There was a sign saying "If God hates gays, why do we keep winning?"

I wonder if this was the logic of the 3rd Reich, 1936 - 1942?

Yeah the Babylonians were stringing together a pretty good win streak too, for awhile...it doesn't mean God loved them...

I think you're wrong on your details. I believe that the names you're naming are not ruling class, and Trump and his enemies agree they're fair game.

Trump may well decimate the political class, including all those names and more. The people who are going to be protected by this grand bargain, should there be one, are going to be the ruling class people, of whom you have never heard.

If there is a grand bargain, it will be to protect the ruling class as a group, and maintain their absolute hold on power.

All that assumes that the Trump phenomenon is a power struggle within the ruling class. If Trump is willing to de-legitimize the ruling class, there may be names we never heard of being accused of crimes we never expected.
