A change to the Caligan campaign

In light of the changes in the ebook market and our retreat from the Kindle Unlimited space, we've been making some strategic changes at Arkhaven and Castalia House. Now that we've successfully entered the video space, we're concentrating our efforts on our strongest fiction and non-fiction properties, primarily because we don't have the bandwidth to devote to everything.

This is why we've returned the publishing rights to their books to a number of our authors, although we continue to support them and their self-publishing efforts, and why we have methodically reduced the number of books that we are publishing. Our sales remain strong, which tends to indicate that our revised approach is a viable one.
The reason I'm explaining this is that we have decided to make a change to the comics being delivered to the backers of the Caligan campaign. Instead of six black-and-white issues of The Stars Came Back, we are going to publish six full-color digital issues of Arts of Dark and Light, a Selenoth-based comic, as well as the related paperback and hardcover omnibuses. We have not yet decided if we'll be using one of the novellas, such as The Wardog's Coin or a selection from A Throne of Bones, as the source.

I've already spoken to Rolf about this, and as those who know him will not be surprised to hear, he was entirely understanding of what we're doing and why we're doing it. We like Rolf and his work, and Castalia will continue to publish his print editions going forward.

Obviously, we will offer a refund to any backer who does not support this change of the third comic. Also, since the change from black-and-white to color will leave the overall project in the red, we will be offering presales of the paperback and the hardcover once we have completed the first digital issue and delivered it to the backers. Please note that any campaign backer who wishes a refund as a result of this announcement can simply email me with the backer number and the word REFUND in the subject.

And for those who don't object to the change, feel free to discuss which of the various Selenoth stories you'd most like to see in graphic format here. If we decide upon a selection from A Throne of Bones, it will probably be the battle between Legio XVII and the goblin tribes.

"... it will probably be the battle between Legio XVII and the goblin tribes."

My favorite section from the early part of the book, and the action would transfer well to graphic presentation.

I would love to see the red prince and the dalarn vs the aalvarg

I wish Castalia the best as they tangle with a monopoly far worse than anything Teddy busted.

Hopefully "the game" is also being played with continual anti-trust pressure to whatever degree can be viably exerted.

Sounds good to me.

Blogger pdwalker August 25, 2019 11:15 AM

shame. i would have liked to see “The Stars Came Back” in print.

nevermind. any of the selenoth stories will be excellent. how to choose just one?

it’s going to be a tough decision.

Blogger FrankUnderwood August 25, 2019 11:22 AM

The Last Witch King would make a great comic

Blogger Jack Ward August 25, 2019 11:37 AM

Would like to see Rolf continue the Stars Came Back saga. To see the crew develop the amazing base they chanced upon.
As the Empire of the Dark Lord grows
any problems will be overcome. Its ordained in the stars.

The vote of the people is being tossed aside.

I like the goblin battle and think it would translate well to a comic, but I think the rescue of the Elf would make a pretty good comic too. Or, or, or, damn there's a lot of good material just begging to be made into comics!

Blogger VD August 25, 2019 12:04 PM

The vote of the people is being tossed aside.

It's not a democracy. And given some of the lessons we've learned, we are no longer going to push IP that we do not control into other media.

Publishers are in a trap of sorts. If a book doesn't sell well, the author thinks he should have self-published. If the book sells really well, the author thinks he should have self-published.

Blogger Max August 25, 2019 12:05 PM

Anything you can do to get away from Amazon I will support financially. I bought unto the Kindle concept immediately, but unfortunately Amazon has proven to be censorious and untrustworthy. Now that they control the e-be-book market I expect to see increasing control of content over time as they become converged. Independent authors are relying on a shaky foundation and need another platform. Hopefully this can be done through software since designing an open-source kindle would be expensive. Still, to realize the future a la Star Trek it must be done!

Blogger Mad Italian August 25, 2019 12:26 PM

I'm good with the change, the last book was only a bonus for me. The Last Witch King has by vote to swap in.

Blogger binks webelf August 25, 2019 12:36 PM

Start at the start. The Last Witch King prefigures so many elements of the later saga.

Blogger swiftfoxmark2 August 25, 2019 12:45 PM

I'd like to see a comic series based on The Wardog's Coin. That was always my favorite novella set in that universe.

Blogger Nate August 25, 2019 12:59 PM

while I understand... I am disappointed. the stars came back was going to be awesome. then again you could just go ahead and make it mini series.

Blogger Scire August 25, 2019 1:02 PM

My daughter was looking forward to the green knight squire comic, as that was her reading material this summer,

A comic on the Lodi storyline would be cool. I enjoyed His thread in the book.

@13 Binks wrote: Start at the start. I agree, I have all these books and I hope that they can be the basis for a very long sequence of comic books. Starting at the beginning will save a lot of explaining. Also the Witchking book is a real shocker as it describes massive evil being released into the world and will therefore serve to create tension.

Blogger James Dixon August 25, 2019 1:06 PM

Pretty much. Whatever Castalia House/Arkhaven needs to do to make it work is fine by me.

> Hopefully this can be done through software since designing an open-source kindle would be expensive.

Check out the FBReader Android app.

The problem is getting an open store up and running for authors to use. That's non-trivial. In the meantime I'm hoping that eventually Walmart's ebook offerings will offer at least some competition.

That is still being produced. The first two issues are mostly done.

Blogger John August 25, 2019 1:31 PM

Thanks Vox & Dread Ilk for all the behind-the-scenes work.

Concur on the battle between Legio XVII and the goblins.

Blogger Janus August 25, 2019 1:39 PM

The AODAL stories I'd like to see adapted most:

1. The Hoblets of Wiccam Fensboro
2. Lodi's account of the war between the Dwarves and the Troll King
3. Birth of an Order
4. Master of Cats/Opera Vita Aeterna
5. The XVII Legion Vs Goblins
6. The Wardog's Coin
7. Qalabi Dawn

The Last Witch King is a good choice from a chronological point of view as others have said, its still a story about a literal secret king though, I'd rather see some of the bigger battles or stories featuring more prominent characters for a first comic book. Or Hoblets.

I appreciate the response and I understand your point of view, however this was a crowdfunding campaign and you did state this to the backers:

"That is because Arkhaven Comics has decided that whether we hit the next two stretch goals or not, we will produce Book #3, whatever the backers decide it will be, and we will produce it in full color."

Now this campaign has evolved since then due to Will himself, and other factors, however the various authors did graciously contribute the use of their work (as well as Arkhaven and other contributors including the artists, and colorists).

In the spirit of the campaign, this should be put to a vote. Very likely, the outcome will be to leave it in Arkhaven's hands, which I'm fine with, but the vote should be held out of respect for the backers.

Blogger VD August 25, 2019 2:13 PM

you did state this to the backers

I was told a lot of things that didn't come to pass too. So I am not going to accept being held accountable for things that were entirely contingent upon other's responsibilities.

If you want a refund, we'll give you one. You have that option. But I'm not going to waste my time or the backers' resources on projects that should not have been done in the first place. We all meant well, but the foundation was not solid.

We are going to be in the red on this no matter what due to the need to produce 18 comics. So I want to make sure at least some of them will sell well enough to give us a shot at breaking even on it.

Blogger Janus August 25, 2019 2:16 PM

I should have ended my previous post by also saying that regardless of which stories I'd like to see most, I do think the XVII vs Goblins is the best choice to actually do, followed maybe by Master of Cats/Opera Vita Aeterna or Wardog's Coin.

I'd like to suggest The Crows as well for one of the better choices, but its probably a bit too far into the story for starting out; the battle with the goblin tribes is easily one of the most iconic ones in the series and isn't all that far in.

Blogger John August 25, 2019 2:24 PM

I'm a backer, I feel entirely respected and no vote is necessary. Thanks.

Blogger D.J. August 25, 2019 2:44 PM

First: thanks for the update.

For the rest: I was in it primarily for Green Knight's Squire, which is still happening, so I'm fine.

I'll let others express interest for the replacement of The Stars Came Back.

Blogger Max Boivin August 25, 2019 3:04 PM

Wait... I'm not a backer and I'm not too sure what we're talking about, but I will absolutely buy a hardcover comic of a Selenoth story. If I could only have one story, maybe the one where Theodoric and Lodi try to get lady Everbright. The siege or Iron Mountain would be pretty cool too.

Blogger Dave August 25, 2019 3:04 PM

I don't want a refund. I know this campaign was very ambitious and very much in flux from the beginning.

My only other questions then are:

1. Is this still in effect? "50 percent of any subsequent sales will be split between Will, the contributors, and the backer-selected author(s)."

2. Will Richard Bonk be the artist?

Blogger Footman August 25, 2019 3:05 PM

Janus' recommendations are excellent.

Blogger VD August 25, 2019 3:24 PM

1. Is this still in effect? "50 percent of any subsequent sales will be split between Will, the contributors, and the backer-selected author(s)."

Yes, although we'll wave the latter in the case of the ATOB author.

2. Will Richard Bonk be the artist?

For at least the first four Swan Knight Saga issues.

Blogger IncoherentM August 25, 2019 3:30 PM

I appreciate the update and the continued attempt to fulfill the promises to the backers in some way, rather than outright dropping it. As far as the stories, The Wardog's Coin and The Hoblets of Wiccam Fensboro would be great choices.

Off topic, but if we haven't received a response to the AHQ email, should we wait patiently, or resend the email? I don't want to overload your Inbox with more unneeded junk.

Blogger VD August 25, 2019 3:47 PM

Re AH:Q, just wait. You'll be receiving information soon.

Blogger Silent Draco August 25, 2019 3:57 PM

Legio XVII vs the goblins, or the Wardog's Coin. Either makes a compelling, gripping graphic story that will attract readers and $.

Appreciate the update and understand the strategic decision that must be made, given some market shifts. Will remain patient, like Nate waiting on a Glock user to come to his senses.

I would highly recommend that everyone who has not yet purchased Rolf's books should do so immediately. They are great. The original "screen play" version is wonderful, even if it takes a few pages to get used to the format. The novelization of the first half of that story is fantastic (I am still waiting on part 2). The Heretics of St. Possenti is a must read.

Seriously, get those books. I hope they can be given the comic treatment at some point, and they should also be on the list of works to be turned into film, as well.

Blogger Frode Holmgang August 25, 2019 5:16 PM

Understandable. Good on you for going the extra mile with a colour replacement.

Blogger JG August 25, 2019 5:53 PM

The Last Witch King would be vote.

Blogger GK Chesterton August 25, 2019 5:58 PM

I'd vote Last Witch King too. That being said I'm disappointed that Castalia House seems to be stalling. I'm providing some help, but obviously not enough. What more should we be doing? I want Grant, Wright, Kratman (I know that's a looooooong shot), and the others under one house that I can trust.

Your commedies have been stellar. Seven Faces was a wonderful book. And of course there is Slenoth.

Blogger VD August 25, 2019 6:04 PM

There is nothing you can do. Almost everyone prefers Amazon to be their publisher now. Castalia is doing fine, we're not stalling so much as regrouping for the next advance.

@10 VD
Publishers are in a trap of sorts. If a book doesn't sell well, the author thinks he should have self-published. If the book sells really well, the author thinks he should have self-published.

VD and crew have already done wonders to help authors and their efforts to self-publish. I'm sure that effort will keep happening. After all, VD and his folks are only taking on the monster Amazon, to name just one of the corporate octopuses. These campaigns do take time, genius, and dollars.
Bravo to them all!

Personally, I am sticking with Castalia House.

Any time you guys want to fund the comic book version of Jack Broccoli, a potential multi-million-dollar franchise is CH's to publish.

Blogger Clint August 25, 2019 7:39 PM

DTG, a true friend.

Blogger Mad Italian August 25, 2019 7:57 PM

P.S. I'll have to look up my pledge level, but I'm very open to purchasing the third book as a hard cover too -if that's helpful.

Blogger Jack Ward August 25, 2019 8:47 PM

Am re-reading John C. Wright's Some whither, as a prelude to the sequel No Whither. The second time around for Some Whither is as much fun as the first. Its been awhile since 2016 and I want to be up to speed. May have to hurry it as the sequel is burning a hole in my literary list.
John C. is the kind of quality writer that congregates around Castalia House, VD and all us hangers on.
Not sure but I think John is self-publishing now? Correct me if in error.

Blogger matveidaniilovich August 25, 2019 11:23 PM

The comics community has been waiting w/ bated breath for the coming of Jack Broccoli.

Blogger pdwalker August 25, 2019 11:42 PM

Master of Cats
The Last Witch King

Ah, heck. I'd pay for all of them, so I will defer my biased judgement to the wisdom of the crowd.

Blogger artensoll August 26, 2019 3:06 AM

No refund for me, thank you, but I do appreciate the offer.

I loved the b&w artwork we saw last year and am a little bummed about that but hearing we're getting us some Selenoth more than makes up for it.

I would prefer to start at the beginning, but that's only because OCD. However this all shakes out I trust you and I'm just happy to be involved.

I don't like the idea of you going into the red though. Is there something we can do to help with that?

Blogger VD August 26, 2019 8:48 AM

You're still getting 12 issues of that in Swan Knight Saga.

Oh sweet! Thank you.

Blogger Ahărôwn August 26, 2019 5:13 PM

I'll take the entire series in comic format, so which ever one you wish to do first is fine with me.

Speaking of which, and I know you're very busy, but I would very much like to see the extended Sea of Skulls out whenever you can.

Thanks for all of your hard work, Vox.

Blogger OvergrownHobbit August 26, 2019 7:10 PM

Master of Cats would be fun to illustrate and it is a charming tale.

Blogger Josh Randle August 28, 2019 12:16 AM

Definitely one of the short stories from summa elvitica. Not sure which one. I actually haven't read any of them. I'm waiting to read them after you finally release the second book, since I will need something to fill in the waiting time while I'm waiting for book 3. Any idea when the full book 2 will come out?
