The difference between power and influence

Russia is the latest nation-state to remind the large multinationals that we are not living in a post-national cyberpunk world. National sovereignty, militaries, and nuclear weapons trump money and media power every time.
Russia's state communications watchdog has asked Google to stop advertising "illegal mass events" on its YouTube video platform, it said on Sunday.

Tens of thousands of Russians staged what observers called the country's biggest political protest for eight years on Saturday, defying a crackdown to demand free elections to Moscow's city legislature. Multiple YouTube channels broadcast the event live.

The watchdog, Roscomnadzor, said some entities had been buying advertising tools from YouTube, such as push notifications, in order to spread information about illegal mass protests, including those aimed at disrupting elections.

It said Russia would consider a failure by Google to respond to the request as "interference in its sovereign affairs" and "hostile influence (over) and obstruction of democratic elections in Russia".

If the company does not take measures to prevent events from being promoted on its platforms, Russia reserves the right to respond accordingly, Roscomnadzor said, without giving details.
More and more states are learning that it's not worth permitting these soulless artificial creatures to operate freely and as they see fit in violation of national laws.

I will have no feelings if that Jewish/Hindu/Sodomite golem has the sadz. They are not my countrymen; they are alien sociopaths.

"More and more states are learning that it's not worth permitting these soulless artificial creatures to operate freely and as they see fit in violation of national laws."

It would be great if the USA could make them follow our laws.

Boy, I sure hope Google can count on the Trump administration it's been busy monstering and slandering to help them out.

Blogger Brett baker August 12, 2019 6:27 AM

How would complying with Russia's request be different than complying with China's?

Blogger Martin Marprelate August 12, 2019 6:50 AM

If he doesn’t help it will be Muh Russians. If he does help it will still be muh Russians.

Blogger tublecane August 12, 2019 6:52 AM

@4- China's requests are yellow (and faded red), whereas Russia's are white and somewhat Christian-y.

By the way, I keep seeing advertisements for...something, I don't pay close attention. Maybe the Week Magazine? Do they have a t.v. show? Anyway, it's all about how naughty YouTube is for allowing "hate speech," which has led to the wrong votes being cast in Brazil and elsewhere. Brazil is singled out for whatever reason.

I bring this up not because it's any surprise but because this Russian would-be censorship is just one example amongst a crowd of censorious dreams. And no Anglo-Saxon* tradition would help our friends to the East.

*The Week is based in the U.K. and U.S., I believe, though of course it could be run by other sorts of people for all I know.

I get a sense lately that the Big Social companies are about to get smeared like a nerd on the playground who's been taunting the football team. They may have a lot of money, but when it comes to wielding old-fashioned political power in the real world, they're total newbies, and they aren't nearly as smart as they think they are.

Blogger Sargent.matrim August 12, 2019 7:24 AM

Wow Russia basically implying it will declare war on Google. Wow!

Blogger Doktor Jeep August 12, 2019 7:25 AM

Why threaten? Just do it.

Those tech sociopaths up in Silicon Valley confuse the rest of the world's autocrats with the totally feminized American empire where screaming girls cow low SMV males of both the left and the right. And since the American "muh military" is coming up against hard limits with low payback the elite of the American empire are being given the finger with increasing regularity.

The "opposition" tends to overstate the size of its crowds. Moscow is a city of 12 million. I think the aging rock band Metallica drew bigger crowds.

Google has been doing whatever it pleases under the corrupt socialist regime in California, so it naturally thinks it will be able to do the same in Russia. They haven't learned anything from their China experience because Google was not coerced by China... Google leadership thinks the Chinese model of social control is a great idea, so Google jumped on board the moment they learned of the chicom's plans. They have a blind spot with Russia, though. Western based leftists don't really believe it ever stopped being the Soviet Union. They couldn't be more wrong: Vlad isn't the Kommisar in Chief-- Vlad is the Tsar. Google doesn't grok the differwnce.

Isn't it ironic that Youtube is owned by a Russian Jew.

Blogger ZhukovG August 12, 2019 7:57 AM

@peacefulposter: So were the Bolsheviks.

When do drone strikes begin on Mountain View?

Blogger Mr.MantraMan August 12, 2019 9:22 AM

We'll see if twitter comes under fire, an hour ago it was the Chopra chick and hashtags lambasting or supporting her as top trend, just now back to the usual fare of Resistance astroturf, and Chopra off the radar, at least on my timeline.

Blogger Gregory the Great August 12, 2019 9:36 AM

When do "state actor" hackers unleash the worm with a self-teplication rate of 100000 per second that will make all Mountain View screens go blue?

Blogger Dirk Manly August 12, 2019 11:26 AM

Uh... see /etc/limits.conf

Forkbunny attacks were already controlled for student accounts on Unix machines (and other multi-user systems) back in the 1980s. The only reason the Morris Worm was even noticed was because he accidentally made a slow-motion forkbunny, and the mail server program was running under root (i.e. "superuser") privileges.

These days, almost all servers are run under an associated user-id, precisely so that the number of child processes caused by a hack are limited to keep the whole machine from falling over and taking out both the server that's attacked AND other servers running on the same host (contrary to layman terminology, servers are software, not hardware. I can run a server (say, a temperature monitor and control) on even a lowly Arduino.)

In any event, trying to forkbunny Google into submission isn't going to work.

Blogger Dirk Manly August 12, 2019 11:27 AM

Back in the 1980's, it was /etc/ulimits. But the same principle applied then as now.

Blogger Ska_Boss August 12, 2019 12:08 PM

Born too early to travel the stars, born too late to explore the oceans, but I do live in a time where Russia just might nuke Google!

Blogger Dirk Manly August 12, 2019 12:13 PM

And there will be much rejoicing.

Blogger wahr01 August 12, 2019 1:35 PM

@20

"trying to forkbunny Google into submission isn't going to work"

You underestimate the level of slop in these firms' ops/devops shops.

Blogger Dirk Manly August 12, 2019 1:59 PM

You're saying that they are overriding the standard defaults, and giving devs root access?

Blogger Raker_T August 12, 2019 2:23 PM

@9 The Russians can be excruciatingly diplomatic in their speech. I guess it's like a book I read that included a section on doing business with the Japanese. When they bow and say "Yes, yes" they mean we understand, not we agree.

It's a shop run by devs. What do you think?

The Russian Federation is a whole 'nother level of Advanced Persistent Threat for Google.

The scope of the threat runs from cyber to kinetic. We have, at best, piss poor ability to deal with hybrid warfare at the nation state level, at the subnational level it can range from some Googster's Tesla suddenly blazing down the 101 at 140MPH and wrapping itself around a tree to viral videos of Googsters enjoying cheese pizza to massive PII data breaches or the GOOG getting caught directly funding a direct action that gets someone killed, complete with email trails pointing to Sundar and company.

Tell Putin I'll chip in, especially for that last one. How 'bout it, Vladimir? Can we crowdfund some serious pain for some mutual enemies?

Blogger Dirk Manly August 13, 2019 1:49 PM

Put in for Putin.

Blogger Anthony August 13, 2019 2:57 PM

Russia is threatening rather than acting because if Google knuckles under, Russia can then use Google's influence for its own purposes.

Blogger Dirk Manly August 14, 2019 12:21 AM

And if Google does, then good for Russia. And humanity.
