The latest Google document leak

It's not the first. It won't be the last. But it is substantive.
A Google staffer today released documents exposing a massive censorship campaign where the ubiquitous Google search engine purposefully censored pro-life and conservative web sites, including LifeNews.com.

Google Insider Zachary Vorhies has given an interview to watchdog group Project Veritas where he discusses how he documented Google censorship of leading pro-life and conservative web sites for over a year. He made the decision to go public in an on-the-record video interview after Google went after him following the release of the information to Project Veritas.

He decided to go public after receiving a letter from Google, and after he says Google allegedly called the police to perform a “wellness check” on him.

Along with the interview, Vorhies asked Project Veritas to publish more of the internal Google documents he had previously leaked.

“I gave the documents to Project Veritas, I had been collecting the documents for over a year. And the reason why I collected these documents was because I saw something dark and nefarious going on with the company and I realized that there were going to not only tamper with the elections, but use that tampering with the elections to essentially overthrow the United States,” he said.
I don't quite understand the concept of making the documents available to download only if you install some strange application, though. I'll pass, thanks.

I haven't read through it all but there is some pretty damning evidence. Google is in a bad spot right now.

"Algorithmic Unfairness" means unjust or prejudicial treatment that is related to characteristics such as race, income, sexual orientation, or gender, through algorithmic systems or algorithmmically aided decision-making"

In other words: when algorithms are unbiased inconvenient facts are produced, and we can't allow that.

Police have done "health and welfare" checks for years.

Suppose you've been calling your grandma on the phone, and she hasn't answered. And the phone is NOT going direct to voicemail, nor is there "this phone is currently off-network" message. You might suspect that granda is incapacitated in someway such that she can't answer the phone.

So you call her local police department to drop by her place, and make sure she's OK, because she lives 700 miles away from you.

They drop by, see if she answers the door. Tell her what's going on, and then call you back to report that grandma is OK.

Now, what we saw in the video was certainly NOT a "health and wellness check".. ordered to put his hands up and approach the officers walking backwards... sheesh. Reminded me of the video where that crazed cop in Arizona was giving deliberately contradictory instructions to a drunk man, and then warned him that if he didn't follow those instructions precisely, he would be shot..... which proved to be accurate about 10 seconds later.

Apparently "Don't be evil" applies only to Google's users, not Google the company and it's management.

Blogger bodenlose Schweinerei August 14, 2019 3:02 PM

I am curious. How does Google makes its money and how can we consciously not contribute to their empire?
I assume they have various streams of cash and wonder what is the most lucrative?

Blogger Fuzzums Wuzzums August 14, 2019 3:07 PM

Wait, wait, wait. Did I read that correctly? Google had someone swatted??

Blogger Peter August 14, 2019 3:08 PM

From the Project Veritas article:
“they got inside the gate, the police, and they started banging on my door… And so the police decided that they were going to call in additional forces. They called in the FBI, they called in the SWAT team. And they called in a bomb squad.”

“[T]his is a large way in which [Google tries to] intimidate their employees that go rogue on the company…”

So, Google actually swatted their employee? I mean, the police won't act like this if Google told them: "some employee copied some internal documents and made them public", or would they?

Blogger Clay, Bill Clay August 14, 2019 3:10 PM

"Zachary Vorhies"

He should have done the anonymous interviews in a dirty, nicked-up hockey mask.

Blogger Catallaxy August 14, 2019 3:13 PM

@Geir Balderdson Google makes moosh of their revenue selling advertising. The best way to not contribute to their empire is to not use their "free" services like search, maps, Gmail, YouTube etc. and to use an ad blocker like ublock origin. Use non Google alternatives like DuckDuckGo, ProtonMail, Here maps etc. instead wherever you can.

Blogger DonReynolds August 14, 2019 3:23 PM

Also worth mentioning is....

Tomorrow (August 15th) is Napleon's birthday. Certainly OT, but sometimes a day or so is sufficient notice for private events and cake cutting.

Very few individuals in Western Civilization created as much excitement in such a short period of time, even beyond the European continent. Like everyone else, he was a man with flaws and weaknesses, and some of them lead to his own disappointments and defeats, but there is little doubt of his importance. After all, he did sell Jefferson the Louisiana Purchase.

And so as a full-time employee at the company, I just searched for some keywords and these documents started to pop up. And so once I started finding one document and started finding keywords for other documents and I would enter that in and continue this cycle until I had a treasure trove and archive of documents that clearly spelled out the system, what they’re attempting to do in very clear language.”"

He followed industry best practices. It was both iterative and agile. And totally scrummy too. Diversity is now Google's strength.

"Wait, wait, wait. Did I read that correctly? Google had someone swatted??"

In this case, yes.

That wasn't a "health and welfare check"

That was a "dangerous psycho on the loose" check.

There's a difference. Nobody needs to put their hands up and walk backwards towards the checkers on a health and welfare ("is this person alive and ambulatory?") check.

Mr. MantraMan

See Razorfist's youtube video about how they're deliberately hiding videos but NOT deleting them (to avoid charges of censorship). Case in point was the videos of the highlights of the election night webcast from The Young Turks, in which they all had a meltdown. Even when Razorfist typed in THE EXACT TITLE, the sought-for video was 5th down the list.

@28 The BBC in the UK has been doing the same thing for many years now on their website. It looks like they haven't reported something, it's not in the news cycle or anything. But in call-in shows on the radio when they are challenged for not covering something - on what do you know, they did cover the story. But it was well hidden and the presenter is miraculously able to find the story and related article.

Wellness checks are common in Florida. I did it once to my mother back in 1998 when she was not answering her phone. She lived alone at the time.
Some years ago I lived on one of those odd streets where they change the direction but not the name and start house numbers over in the opposite direction. More than once cops came knocking looking for the other house.

As for Google....
Well I remember a time when Patriot groups, long ago, would, if there was a mere shadow of a rumour of an idea that we might do something, end up under investigation with informants trying to trick us into smack talk at the least, to lead up to the goal of what they wanted the most: to perp walk the entire group with their guns confiscated and some fat boomer sherrif saying " it's a good thing we stopped these people" or "we're lucky to get these dangerous military weapons off the street".
Now I watch armed leftist groups like redneck Revolt and John Brown gun club make open threats against federal facilities and agents and NOTHING happens to them.
So no, I expect nothing to happen to Google.

I really do hope Vorhies sues Google, just on this point, that they tried to get him murdered by police proxy.

1. I don't trust any man with a bun
2. I don't trust downloading the documents

However, in saying that I did watch the video with the man bun guy talking, which showed parts of these alleged google documents. The unfairness algorithm I imagine is just the norm these days and not really any different from having a ridiculously stupid policy for hiring equal numbers of female and male.

The black list was more interesting. I looked up one of the black listed websites, Christianpost.com, to check if it was a dodgy site or not. It looked genuinely Christian focused with fairly unbiased reporting. They have a story about being blacklisted, it informs readers that they had contacted Google for confirmation and will advise on the outcome.

@56 Jack Amok. You wrote "If you're a life insurance salesman, I wouldn't write any policies for folks name Gracchus these days. "
Jack, I read Charles Oman's "Seven Roman Statesmen of the Late Republic" a little while ago (Thanks, Vox, for the recommendation!). There both Gracchi were described as naive socialists who tried to enact reforms that could not work because they were based on fictitious ideas of equality etc. Could you please explain what you mean by your comment, maybe I am too thick today to understand the joke?

Blogger VD August 15, 2019 6:06 AM

There's an option for regular download at the bottom of the download widget.

Yes. And if you use it, it still tries to make you use the app if you just want to download the whole zipfile.

Blogger rycamor August 15, 2019 7:28 AM

After you click "Can't use the app?", it just makes an HTML/Javascript widget that looks like the app with MediaShuttle on top, and when you click Download it spends a few moments "Processing files" but all it does is a regular browser download. I found no additional apps or browser extensions installed afterward.

Obviously this MediaShuttle thing is some adware Veritas is pushing to make extra money, but the bypass is harmless.
