NFL Coach of the Year

We're only one game - not one week, one game - into the NFL season and it's already clear that Mike Tomlin deserves to be named Coach of the Year for having dealt successfully with Antonio Brown for nine years. This may actually be a more impressive coaching feat than Bill Belichick's six Super Bowl victories, given that even a Super Bowl-winning coach like Jon Gruden couldn't keep him in check for nine weeks.
Antonio Brown asked the Raiders to release him in an Instagram post shared Saturday morning.

The request comes shortly after news broke that Oakland had fined Brown $215,073.53 on Friday night for conduct detrimental to the team on Sept. 4, which Raiders voided the $29.125 million worth of guaranteed money in his deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. In addition to fining Brown for conduct and voiding the guaranteed money in his contract, the Raiders reportedly sent Brown a letter stating that he no longer will be entitled to termination pay if they release him.
Antonio Brown actually makes Terrell Owens look reasonable in retrospect.

UPDATE: After the Raiders wiped out more than $29 million in guaranteed money under Brown’s contract with the team, Brown asked to be released. And the Raiders have released him.

UPDATE: Antonio Brown is now a New England Patriot.

You know someone is a problem when it makes Mike Tomlin look good.

Blogger SemiSpook37 September 07, 2019 12:17 PM

Makes you wonder why the Steelers were content to play down to their competition all those years.

Blogger Manuel September 07, 2019 12:33 PM

Could it be because Tomlin is black? that the only one that can keep a brother in check is another brother?

Blogger Manuel September 07, 2019 12:33 PM

They've released him.

Blogger justaguy September 07, 2019 12:59 PM

At least someone is costing him $, instead of rewarding bad behavior.

Blogger Retrenched September 07, 2019 1:02 PM

My guess is he ends up with the Redskins. They're known for throwing too much money at talented free agents that have lots of issues. Plus they need help at WR.

For many brothers, yes.

Blogger JAU September 07, 2019 1:35 PM

If they can just wipe it out, how was the money guaranteed?

Blogger Chris Ritchie September 07, 2019 1:38 PM

Years ago, when the Titans were dealing with Adam "Pacman" Jones and his circus, a sports commentator said something I've remembered since then:

"If Jack the Ripper could play football, I'm sure the Titans would figure out a way to get him into a uniform."

Blogger Gapeseed September 07, 2019 1:40 PM

Brown likely suffered brain damage after Burfict laid him out a few seasons ago. As such, no team should touch him. It's a real shame - he's an all-time great receiver.

It'll be fun to watch some of the black commentators somehow blame this on racism. That's what they did for years with Brown and Bell in Pittsburgh.

Argh! Worst sixth round pick ever!

Blogger bodenlose Schweinerei September 07, 2019 2:28 PM

What is it about the WR position that attracts so many self-obsessed, emotionally incontinent tantrum throwers? And now that I think about it, it's also fairly common in the defensive backfield. Does it relate somehow to their relative isolation on the field?

Unless this was a deliberate orchestrates scheme by Mr Big Chest to go to New England or Philly. He has said that it rankles him that he gets disparaged in Greatest Ever discussion because he doesn't have a ring. So this was his plan to go where he wanted to get one.

Or it could be just about guaranteed cash, if it's true the Raiders wiped it out.

Nice to see the raiders have the coaches back. After watching Al Davis Sr cater to the nuttiness of Randy Moss and the marshmallow man, simply dismissing Brown is a quantum leap in team building.

Blogger Rough Carrigan September 07, 2019 4:22 PM

Not having gotten a big payday yet is what kept Brown in line with the Steelers. Trip Tomlin didn't do a whole lot. The closer he got to the payday the less control Trip seemed to have.

AB will work to his potential in practice, one way or the other. Will be watching for the on- and off-field impacts. There is no I in team, and Belichick stamps unmercifully on the me that weasels in there.

Blogger Rough Carrigan September 07, 2019 6:12 PM

There's a video out there of Brown, at his house or condo looking at his phone and finding out that the Raiders had release him and jumping for joy and running around the yard.

That wasn't a man who was surprised and disappointed. It was a man was overjoyed. It looked an awful lot like a man who didn't want to play for cartoonish idiot Gruden and try to catch passes from lousy QB Derek Carr.

And now, Brown has been signed to a $15 million 1-year contract with the Patriots with a $9 million sign-on bonus.

Blogger L September 07, 2019 7:10 PM

I played fantasy football for the first time this year and I followed a suggestion made by Steve Sailer (as I recall) - pick players based solely on race for the given position. So for wide receiver and running back I picked the blackest I could get, like Tyreek Hill and Antonio Brown. Players got extra black points if they had assault convictions or other similar legal troubles. Likewise, for tight end, quarterback and kicker, I picked the whitest I could get. The trouble with this strategy is that the blackest come with risks, as I'm finding out with Brown.

Blogger Manuel September 07, 2019 7:16 PM

@42 That's probably the way a lot of front offices operate. They just can't say it out in the open.

There's always clauses that can wipe out even guaranteed money if the player goes off the deep end, and starts doing things detrimental.

Brown to vikes for all their draft picks?

As bad as that trade was just imagine if Hershel Walker had acted the diva like Brown just did to get out of the deal.

This certainly changes things in the NFL especially if Brown gets a ring with NE. Don't like where you are at? Just become an unmanageable piece of crap to your current team, and maybe NE will come in and swoop you up for a SB carry.

Coaches and owners need to think about how to counter this kind of dangerous precedent. Perhaps rather than give in to the headache player, he should be suspended and fined until he is out of the league altogether.

The Raiders didn't have to cut him. They could have suspended him but kept him on contract.

Blogger Damelon Brinn September 07, 2019 10:58 PM

What is it about the WR position that attracts so many self-obsessed, emotionally incontinent tantrum throwers?

Basically, the closer you are to the snap, the more brains and focus you need in the NFL. The QB has to know everyone's job on the field for every play, which is why so many QBs who got by on athleticism in college are busts in the NFL. On the other end of the scale, a WR can get away with just knowing his own job. He needs to know a little more if you want him to block, but that's why so many of them are bad at that. So teams can afford to sign a relative dummy at WR if he's a great athlete, as long as he can learn some routes and knows how to move when the QB audibles.

I wouldn't assume Brown is suffering from CTE. It's possible, but there are plenty of insane drama queens who never played a single down of football. Apparently he was such a bad high school student that he couldn't get into Florida State despite his athletic prowess, so he had to start college at a prep tech school. He's dumb enough that people watching Hard Knocks remarked on it, and no one's ever said no to him before in his life. That's explanation enough for his behavior.

The NFL managed to bury the flag kneeling last year by getting their TV partners not to show it. I think we're going to see that racial grievance start to seep through again in other ways, in more holdouts and other drama like this. Lebron James is doing something called Glass Helmet Project to "give football players a voice." The implication is he wants them to speak out more and stop biting their lip to be team players.

It might not happen this season, but by next year there will be massive pressure on all black athletes to stump for Democrats every time the camera is on them. It's gonna be interesting.

Blogger furor kek tonicus ( honkeys are not human so it's okay to hate them, WhiteManBad ) September 08, 2019 12:31 AM

this is why the Raiders dropped him:
"Brown was released by the Raiders later that day, just hours before his 2019 salary would have become guaranteed."

i wonder if Badell is going to do anything about this? the Steelers got a 3rd and 5th round pick from the Raiders for nothing.

the Patriots get what amounts to an unrestricted free agent for the price of his contract.

"Brown signed a three-year extension with about $30 million guaranteed after being acquired from Pittsburgh in March for two draft picks."

so Brown was going to get $10 mill guaranteed for every year he played with the Raiders. anybody got any idea what his contract bonuses were?

the Pats gave him a $9 mill signing bonus with up to $15 mill by the end of the year. sounds like it's pretty close to what he would have had in Oakland.

Yeah, the Raiders got jobbed hard here. At the very least it should be NE that has to cough up the draft picks to Pittsburgh.

Just as the kneeler crap from Kaepernick was fading this ridiculous situation comes up.

I vaguely remember a Lions player that that was very athletic but only played on return teams - he literally was unable to learn plays. On return teams he could play Forest Gump and just run down the field avoiding other people.
