NFL open thread

Skol Vikings!

UPDATE: Kirk Cousins is the Charlie Brown of quarterbacks. It's FIRST DOWN. The RBs are running right over the Green Bay defense, which appears to be almost gassed. Your first two reads are covered. THROW THE BALL AWAY!  Whatever you do, DO NOT TRY TO BE THE HERO.

Naturally, he decides this is the perfect moment to throw an off-balance, under-pressure pass to the corner of the end zone, where Diggs is double-covered. Interception.

This is why the NFL doesn't have guaranteed contracts.

Cousins is showing his training from the Redskins! Sounds like normal Redskin performance.

Blogger Dave September 15, 2019 4:59 PM

Oof, Cousins had 2 fumbles, one lost and 2 picks.

Was the Vikings D even on the field for the first 16 minutes of the game? Tough to spot the Packers 21 points out of the gate although they held them scoreless after that but then Cousins couldn't get it done.

Blogger sappbe September 15, 2019 5:00 PM

I don't like that! And I'm an unfortunate Browns fan, not that I don't like out future. At any rate, this is either the lack of Kyle Shanahan and/or McVeigh and/or the lack of monetary motivation. At further rate, it's unfortunate to see Minnesota waste their roster because they're blowing their window.

Blogger Dave September 15, 2019 5:12 PM

This is why the NFL doesn't have guaranteed contracts.

What they do have, however, as we all know, is guaranteed money. Which happens to be the _entire_ value of Cousins' contract. $84M guaranteed.

they're blowing their window

Cousin's deal was already being described last year as "a mistake that has closed this talented Vikings team’s Super Bowl window for the length of the deal, and probably long after that."

His deal is not the problem. The problem is that we haven't had a good QB since Favre. Bridgewater and Keenum were not the answer either.

Blogger Dad29 September 15, 2019 5:29 PM

Green Bay is trying to prove the theory that they can win-out the season by having an offense that shows up for only ONE quarter/game.

So far, it's worked!

Blogger Giraffe September 15, 2019 5:31 PM

The Vikes didn't look too bad, except for Cousins. Looks like it should have been a win.

Can we get Keenum back?

My apologies to the very nice man who hosts us here - however, Packers Win!!!! (In my defense, I've been a Packers fan my whole life, Packers parka, various shirts/hoodies, and yes, cheesehead hat included, much to the disdain of my Dad, who was always a Cowboys fan, only because my 1st cousin, then later, her daughter were both Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders and my Mom was born and raised in Texas).

Blogger Dave September 15, 2019 5:39 PM

Teddy B. is in for Drew Brees. He's 5 for 9, 40 yards passing with 1 run for 4 yds. Saints and Rams tied at 3 with 4 minutes to go in the 1st half.

Blogger cyrus83 September 15, 2019 6:08 PM

There aren't enough good QBs for all 32 teams, and it has to be frustrating for teams that some draft years there are no good ones to be had. Watching Josh Allen today was encouraging for my Bills who have been going through the QB carousel since 1997.

This is why it's a bad idea to let the defendant testify.

Meanwhile, the Texans narrowly beat the Jaguars.

Perhaps so, but Dak has the 2nd highest completions percentage and passing yards so far this season.

Blogger RC September 15, 2019 8:06 PM

I'll bet Jill could host a great tailgate party.

And Mahomes' 2nd quarter was the stuff of legends. Just amazing.

Blogger Damelon Brinn September 15, 2019 8:43 PM

Cousins beat the system. The Redskins kept offering him contracts that wouldn't guarantee him any more than he could make in one year by sitting pat and letting them use the franchise tag. Since he didn't need money (the guy drove an old minivan) and wasn't swayed by "team-friendly" rhetoric coming from media or fans, he just happily took those checks and then let another team pony up top market value for him. No player cared little enough about being popular to pull that off before.

There might be 10 QBs in the whole league who are capable of running a modern NFL offense at a level where you can hope they'll win games for you, and not just fail to lose them. The Vikings hoped he could be one of them, which would have made him worth it.

Blogger Damelon Brinn September 15, 2019 8:55 PM

And Mahomes' 2nd quarter was the stuff of legends.

Mahomes throws for a first down on 3rd-and-10, but it gets called back for holding. Mahomes shrugs, throws for a 42-yard TD on 3rd-and-20. It seems like he picks a guy each week to be a fantasy stand-out. Maybe next week it'll be Kelce's turn.

Blogger Talios Hammerfist September 15, 2019 9:21 PM

I understand the frustration with Kirk Cousins. Just good enough to get the job done but never consistently... The Tennessee Titans are the same. They have great talent some years, but they can never win consistently... At least we get to witness some more Tom Brady greatness this year, and that Patriot defense is scary good.

Blogger thalios September 15, 2019 9:36 PM

I watched the last part of that game... reminded me of his time with the Redskins. Wentz is putting on a similar show in the first half of SNF. It's nice to see Wentz doing so well. His second INT was a thing of beauty.

So far this season is going well. My Cowboys don't suck and the public displays of inversion have been infrequent. I'm sure they'll still wear pink at some point.

Blogger David Ray Milton September 15, 2019 9:43 PM

So, the #LaundryNight commercial is so ridiculous I actually laughed out loud.

Meanwhile, back in the game, Wentz is trying to figure out how many INT’s he can force in a half.

So, the #LaundryNight commercial is so ridiculous I actually laughed out loud.

The only time I ever watch broadcast tv anymore is the occasional NFL game at a friends house or at a pub. The commercials are... bizarre. They're meant for some other race of creatures.

Also, it's the one chance the networks would have to get me back as a regular viewer, but the shows they advertise are beyond pathetic. That these people get paid for doing such worthless work is an offense to the notion of market economics.

Blogger jeffinjapan September 15, 2019 10:13 PM

Cousins is what he is, a good but not great QB who got massively overpaid.

And about Brees, Saints are done if he misses any extended time.

Blogger Quilp September 15, 2019 10:25 PM

Way back when Cousins was at Michigan state, he reminded me of a journeyman QB of the Brian Griese mold. I never quite understood the Redskins selecting both him, and RGIII in that draft. I'm a Bills fan, I've seen a lot worse QB play, but Kirk never appeared to have a very high ceiling more than backup, or even 3rd string.

Blogger thalios September 15, 2019 10:27 PM

@Jack Amok - My sentiments exactly. Who are these commercials and shows for? Unfortunately, they're probably for many of those walking among us.

Blogger Damelon Brinn September 15, 2019 10:34 PM

The commercials are... bizarre. They're meant for some other race of creatures.

Agreed. A couple months ago, I got my TV out of storage where it'd been for a few years, because I heard we'd gotten a new broadcast channel locally that carries a bunch of good old shows. I couldn't take it. The commercials are all so bad, and the PSAs and promos for new shows are worse. Taking a hiatus from it really made the awfulness stand out.

Blogger Johnny Reb September 15, 2019 10:39 PM

"This is why the NFL doesn't have guaranteed contracts."

I would beg to differ given that Jameis "Crab Legs" Winston still has the starting QB job for the Buccaneers.

Blogger Lazarus September 15, 2019 10:45 PM

Brady would never do that.

Ever. Not even once.

Cousins is a Gamma. A greasy little disgusting Gamma. I saw him jawing at his teammates after his failure as if THEY did something wrong by not protecting his precious ass enough.

Minnesota doomed.

It's like seeing an old High School classmate again after a couple of decades. Whoa! Of course he was getting older the whole time, and if you saw him every day maybe you didn't really notice, but getting hit with the full force of the decline all at once? Yikes.

That's because the Cowboys got smart and hired Kellen Moore as OC. The difference in the offense was noticeable right away. I hope Moore eventually takes over as head coach. Teams are keying to stop Elliott and it has freed up the deep ball.

I think Prescott looks like his accuracy has improved. It wasn't a secret that teams were crowding the line, the Cowboy O just couldn't make them pay.

I was reviewing the highlights of both games this season, and it is striking how much better zip and accuracy Dak has on his passes this year. He has definitely been working on it in the off season. He's throwing bullets.

He's also showing more scrambling this year too, and has been effective.

This offense is loaded, and hasn't even reached the well oiled machine peak yet. However, this team will only go as far as the defense will allow, and that side of the ball is not as far along as the offense.

Blogger Alexamenos September 16, 2019 10:12 AM

Yep, if teams have to respect the deep pass then Zeke and that line is going to tough to stop.

And yeah, it'd be nice to see the defense make a few plays.
