That which is not wanted

If you don't care about the subject of a post, that's fine. But if, for whatever reason, you choose to comment and explain a) that you don't care about the subject of a post, or, b) why you don't care about the subject of the post, you will be banned.

If we're discussing football, those who don't follow football are not welcome to join the discussion. If we're discussing Mongolian music, those who don't like it are not welcome to join the discussion. If we're discussing video games, those who don't play them are not welcome to join the discussion. And if you don't understand why people are interested in the subject of a post, keep your curiosity to yourself. It's not your concern, it's not your problem, and it's not your business.

No one is asking for your opinion.

In short, if you cannot control your male gammatude, your female solipsism, or your narcissism, you are not welcome to comment here. Read all you like. But don't comment. We don't want to hear it.

Blogger Raker_T September 14, 2019 9:55 PM

And going OT has to be a close cousin. But not this time. Presently, I'll go to the other end of the spectrum. The other day, my youngest son was asking how anybody could be so bad, while a contemporary topic was discussed in the living room. I told him it was incrementally, people go bad a step at a time, but that they go into good things the same way. Having mad skills or knowledge comes a step at a time. That's why I don't criticize simplified presentations, it could be someone's starting point. That desire though, that yearning to know more is an amazing gift from God. I totally understand how someone could be into a unusual topic.

Blogger Azure Amaranthine September 14, 2019 9:58 PM

Blogger maniacprovost September 14, 2019 10:06 PM

Does it count if we don't care about the topic of people who don't care?

Letting people comment whatever they want is like the venn diagram of the tragedy of the commons and the lowest common denominator... It would be 97% antisemitism, craft beer, sexual harassment, and diversity as our strength. Caturday posting would be a brief respite to refresh the pain of the other 6 days.

Sgt

As the years have passed its become more apparent to me how utterly retarded libertarian ideology is. In theory its beautiful. In reality its ugly.

Recently we had a libertardian free stater, in our area, who had a history of driving around with an intent to incite "road rage" among other drivers. His goal was to force a violent confrontation which he could then use as a pretext to draw a gun and shoot the other driver claiming it was his "right of self defense".
Well..after a number of failed attempts he finally succeeded -badly wounding a guy who unintentionally rear ended him due to his sudden stopping in the middle of the road. The guy who hit him then got out and and beat him in the face - whereupon the libertardian shot him .
Needless to say his modus operandi was discovered when detectives dug into his past posts on a libertardian forum which led them to find he and other pin heads were actually discussing this sort of behavior as being somehow a legitimate form of libertardian theory...and acceptable behavior.
This sort of pretzel logic is not that uncommon among these morons.

The Art of Silence has been lost.

As a boy, I used to sit and listen to my father and his friends discuss various subjects. Often, there would be long periods of silence while they just sat and though, drinking and smoking. If someone said something about a topic another didn't want to discuss, they simply refrained from commenting.

Now everyone has a fear of silence. I guess that carries over to comments sections.

Needing each bit of silence to be filled with pressured speech is a feminine trait.

Blogger Chris Lopes September 15, 2019 12:30 AM

I tend to not comment on topics even if they interest me. That's because someone else has usually already made the point I was going to make, and honestly, seeing my words on the Web doesn't have quite the thrill as it did in 1998. As to commenting on subjects that don't interest me, life is too damn short for that crap.

Blogger Harris September 15, 2019 4:14 AM

This is a perfectly reasonable policy. There are a lot of topics at this website and others that don't interest me, so I simply read the headline and move on. I never quite understood the impulse to comment on a topic that doesn't interest you at all. There are plenty of interesting discussion threads to discuss with others. Else why waste time coming to the website at all? It would be pretty shocking if Vox didn't have interest he wants to discuss that don't interest me or others. Heck, my own brother is interested in stuff I just don't care about. Why should I or anyone be surprised that the interest of a stranger don't match ours exactly? It's not like we're forced to be here. If you don't like one topic, move on to one you do like. Nothing unreasonable at all with that.

Blogger Harris September 15, 2019 4:23 AM

Good point, Chris Lopez. I comment somewhat frequently on a fan site for a sports team I follow. But I usually look for other comments first. If someone has already said what I want to say, I just "like" their comment, and keep reading. No need to repeat what has already been said.

Another thing that is annoying is those who think they need to defend their comments from any criticism. If a comment cannot stand on it's own merit, then you probably didn't put enough thought into it in the first place. There is a big difference in having an e enjoyable discussion, and being defensive.

It’s not that it’s boring in here, but that it’s boring out there. For lack of a better label, gammas need something to dedicate their energies to; that they find worthy of themselves and their energy. This is true for everyone (given enough time and big enough threat to their survival). Vox knows what he wants to do and has dedicated all his energy to it. That fact probably stirs up or brings out envy in those who have not found “their meaning”.
It’s how Frankl discovered how some were able to survive in the camps, while others gave up. And how Hemingway said that war was the best subject because it was life sped up.
In the mean time, X remains wandering the earth, literally “looking for trouble.”

Exactly. Is there anything more annoying then some Gamma showing up to say they don't Like "Sportsball". Or tying to change the topic from Sports to "current news story" or "Joos" or whatever? You find a topic boring, but have nothing to do with your life, so you run around the internet saying you're bored.

Blogger rcocean September 15, 2019 11:31 AM

Almost as worse, are the subversives. If the topic is sports they go OT about news. If the topic is news, they start chattering about sports.

Blogger Snidely Whiplash September 15, 2019 11:44 AM

I never quite understood the impulse to comment on a topic that doesn't interest you at all.
Usually it's a rather transparent attempt to strike a pose of superiority, often accompanied by a sneer.

Blogger Damelon Brinn September 15, 2019 12:01 PM

As demonstrated in this thread, the Gamma can frame *any* reaction as proving his superiority. You can honestly tell him he's a tiresome bore, and he will think he's getting under your skin. Secret King wins again. In real life, you could punch him in the face, and the pain would force him to shape up or go away. The closest you can come to that online is ridicule, but the Gamma is often inoculated against that by long experience, and the impersonal nature of it takes the edge off.

That's why Vox's policy of quick bans is the only viable one, and why the rest of us non-moderators should ignore Gammas completely once identified. Yes, even if you have a killer rejoinder, you should skip it. Engaging with a Gamma is like wrestling with a pig: even if you win, you end up covered in shit.

As is often the case, G.K. Chesterton has something worthwhile & relevant to say:

“When Byron divided humanity into the bores and bored, he omitted to notice that the higher qualities exist entirely in the bores, the lower qualities in the bored, among whom he counted himself. The bore, by his starry enthusiasm, his solemn happiness, may, in some sense, have proved himself poetical. The bored has certainly proved himself prosaic.”

As always this blog is good to stirring up of one's soul. How many times have ideas of others here opened windows, turned on a light, teased out a thought, surprised us in situ, or even been a startling revelation? This thread, about restraint, has stimulated a vision regarding the lack of breadth of vision in daily discourse, or perhaps just a preoccupation with the tactical at the expense of the strategic. Anyhoo, here is that which arises from the penumbra of this thread for your consideration:

Lord Jesus,

I ask for fresh rebirth of western civilization based upon the gospel. I ask for a great awakening of faith transforming the public square. Let morals, language, and manners be civil. Let modesty and humility adorn our actions. Let the weak be protected. Let our courts be just. I ask for a re-examination of curriculum, redirection of the fine arts away from the grotesque and back towards that which is inspiring. Remake the media to tell the truth and celebrate right action and service. Let captains of industry show restraint as good stewards of resources. Let employers treat their employees well, knowing they too have a master in heaven. Let employees work wholeheartedly as if they are working for You. Let students yearn for and seek out knowledge of the good ways. Move the hearts of parents to raise their children well, move the hearts of children to respect and honor their parents.

As, one of my better college instructors used to say, "It is best to keep silent and listen if you have nothing positive to add to the discussions".

Beau, you always write such beautiful and smart things.

I don’t know you, but may I ask, do you work in a mission of some kind? I heard Vox mention you the other day, and it sounds like you work with the homeless and the poor?
Thanks.

do you work in a mission of some kind?

I did. My initial exposure to living the gospel was through a Russian bible smuggler. He taught me courage.

Amen. Lord Jesus Christ, let it become so.

Falsehoods must be countered wherever they come, trolling or not. Deliberately dropping nonsense makes it worse, not better.

Amen, Beau.

And Amen.

At least your rules for banning make sense. Certainly not the case everywhere.

So weird. I don't think it has ever occurred to me to comment on a post about a subject I have no interest in. Not even on Twitter. Except, perhaps, I may have said something like this before: "I'm amazed that anyone finds this interesting. But the fact so many here do tells me I may be missing out on something. Have fun!"
