24 hours, 300 percent

The Junior Classics campaign is going extremely well, having hit 300 percent of goal in less than 24 hours. You can acquire a digital set, a hardcover set, or a deluxe leatherbound set by backing the campaign.

The 2020 edition is about 85 percent 1918 and 15 percent 1958. This is because the 1918 volumes are generally better, but a) one of the original volumes was half-comprised of Alice in Wonderland whereas the later volume had a better and broader selection of stories, and b) the stories contained in the 1918 Volume 9 Stories of Today are seriously outdated and mediocre in comparison with the relatively timeless stories contained in the 1958 Volume 9, Sport and Adventure.

If you want multiple sets, just run through the buying process as many times as you require. You will receive multiple backer numbers.

The digital editions are both EPUB and MOBI (Kindle) format.

I am overjoyed to hear of this.
If nothing, your ideas and books, Infogalactic, this whole Classics venture (as part of the whole admirable Castilia House projekt) will serve as the Foundation planet for the dying empire which need not be named. Alas, i am not in a position to purchase these or evem have it delivered (living in some bumfuck place in Asia), but I'll sure get a (or many) set (s) whenever I'll get to. Thanks!
Aside from all that, your blog and all other creative expressions have led me to have an education beyond the sorry excuse for the same provided by the centralised system of wherever. My kids will surely be learned and educated ones at the age where i was distracted by shallow literature and entertainment. I understand words alone don't help but hell, thanks!

Leather bound is the way to go!

Blogger Unknown October 16, 2019 9:04 AM

Just ordered a set can't wait to get them. Only thing is I wish I had the funds to get the leather bound.

Awesome.

Can't wait to give the books to my niece and nephew (after I read them, of course).

Backed.

O/T but has the omnibus been shipped to non-US Alt-Hero backers yet?

Thanks for the update on the edition source.

Just curious for future planning purposes, Vox, once the Crowdfunding campaign finishes, will these be available for purchase from Castalia House? I can't afford them at the moment and don't yet have children, but once my wife and I have kids, I would love to be able to get a set of them.

Blogger Jill in StL October 16, 2019 11:20 AM

If I wanted to purchase two sets of the hardbacked books, is that the amount I submit and if so, do I need to fill out the form twice to cover both sets? Or is this just a pledge for any amount? I'm sorry, but I have not participated in a crowdfunding before and I am pretty much illiterate on the mechanisms of operation for crowdfunding. Thanks!

Blogger Wraithburn October 16, 2019 11:21 AM

Will be backing for leatherbacks next week.

Blogger FUBARwest October 16, 2019 11:27 AM

Awesome! I will be getting a hardcover set at the beginning of next month!

Blogger P Glenrothes October 16, 2019 11:39 AM

I signed up for the digital set. I have the 1949 copyright version of The New Junior Classics. It will be interesting to compare the 2 versions.

Blogger dweeb October 16, 2019 11:43 AM

In what format(s) will the digital edition be offered?

Blogger Charlie the Chaste October 16, 2019 11:48 AM

Deus vult!

Blogger Leoric October 16, 2019 12:03 PM

Jill in general you can do it either way. Either you contribute and communicate what you want or you just fill out the perk twice. I am saying this as a third person but I had the same issue when crowdfunding Alt Hero.

Blogger Ska_Boss October 16, 2019 12:11 PM

Thanks Vox, I trust your judgement on this matter as I believe your literary IQ is much higher than mine.

Blogger Fern October 16, 2019 12:13 PM

Question, do we back the crowdfund in order to get the books? Or will they be available for purchase on the castalia house website

Blogger Azimus October 16, 2019 12:33 PM

This is so cool VD. When they passed that book burning law disguised as "protecting children from lead poisoning", I was disheartened. This is a brilliant riposte and great stories to boot! Ave, SDL! Well done sir and well done ilk!

Blogger Servant October 16, 2019 12:39 PM

Does this include any appendix j type stories?

Blogger sammibandit October 16, 2019 1:56 PM

~$40.00 ea for crowd-funded, semi-custom books in hardcover on good/great stock is very reasonable even without b/w and some color illustrations. In Canada hardcover books start at about that price in the store.

Usually we create them in epub, then convert to whatever the Amazon flavor of the year is. For these, if there's demand, we could provide PDFs.

Modern technology means we don't have to tip in color plates. And printing any of the pages in color means we will be using the color process for the whole book. I'm going to ransack the Internet for the best public domain art to illustrate the stories. Many such images.

We will be selling the Junior Classics. Limited print runs are so 20th century.

Best news in this whole awesome project! Kudos aren't enough.

Thank you all for this!

Even better! Heck, this could even spin off into lithographs or something less costly for particularly eye-catching images. Children tend to come back and back again over the years to illustrations they really like, even into adulthood.

Maxfield Parrish did some stuff which wasn't decadent, and at least some of that is in the public domain in the US. There are a great many cool illustrations from pre-WWI era.

Will these leatherbound books be available as part of the book club, or will this be the only opportunity to get leatherbound Junior Classics?

Blogger Roger October 16, 2019 3:45 PM

Not in a place financially to support the campaign (may do the digital one), but we actually have all the originals in hard cover and in very good condition......

The leatherbound Junior Classics will be for sale in some form. Unlike the standard hardcovers, we will have to deal with limited batches. We plan to get [an appropriately padded number based on the outcome of this campaign] bound, then sell the extras. If demand outstrips supply... well that's a good problem to have.

Blogger Wasumyon October 17, 2019 1:25 AM

Hello, I will soon be another happy supporter of this great project! My friends were also interested but hesitant. They were wondering if there was list of stories included in these volumes. Thank you for your time.

Day 2: 463%

This is astonishing, especially to those predicting the end of books (again).

Maybe if you print good stuff good people will actually pay for it?

Naaaah...

Blogger U.L.F. October 17, 2019 7:00 AM

I'm really looking forward to the books, I've backed the campaign and can't wait to get my hands on them.

I'm just a bit concerned about an issue with copyright and public domain. I don't know how how it works. If you use the 1918 editions, I understand that everything is perfectly fine, but using stories from the later editions may still be copyrighted? I hope this isn't an issue though.

Blogger fredulent October 17, 2019 7:47 AM

As a non US alt hero backer I have received the omnibus here in Australia ralia.

Blogger wreckage October 17, 2019 9:39 AM

The list isn't settled yet, because we're going to be incorporating stories from the 1958 edition which are now in public domain, and possibly others from elsewhere. For instance, not all the fables of Aesop are in Volume 1 of the 1918 edition, so I plan to add more.

You can get a basic idea by searching in Google Books and archive.org and Gutenberg for the various volumes, then reviewing the tables of contents.

Here is an example.

I cant find the campaign on indiegogo, except by following your link. Even when I copy paste the title of it in the search bar, I suspect grabbling.

Blogger Bibliotheca Servare October 17, 2019 7:27 PM

Rex, are the hardcovers going to be acid-free paper like the leather bound editions? I tried searching in case the question had already been answered but could only find confirmation that the leather deluxe editions would be acid-free archival quality paper.

I asked in the other thread, then realized no one would ever see it. Mea culpa.

Assuming you're not a concern-troll, if you think about this for more than a few seconds, you'll understand why you don't need to be concerned.

These books are only for the few, the literate, the very special….

Any chance these will be ready by Christmas?
