A contest of wills

The NBA is about to learn that China doesn't negotiate with lying foreign devils:
The National Basketball Association won't gag its personnel or apologise over a team executive's tweet that ignited a firestorm in China, commissioner Adam Silver insisted Tuesday, standing firm despite a growing backlash that imperils the league's lucrative Chinese following.

The tweet last Friday by Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey supporting pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong has infuriated Chinese fans and led to broadcasters and sponsors severing ties with the NBA.

But Silver, speaking at a press conference in Japan where the Rockets are playing exhibition games this week, said the world's top basketball league would continue to "support freedom of expression and certainly freedom of expression of the NBA community."

"The NBA will not put itself in a position of regulating what players, employees and team owners say or will not say on these issues. We simply could not operate that way," Silver said in a statement before the press conference.
It won't surprise me if the Chinese government waits for the commissioner to travel to China before cancelling both exhibition games at the last minute. Especially in light of how Silver's claim that the NBA supports freedom of expression is absolutely and entirely false. The NBA doesn't even hesitate to put itself in a position of regulating what players, employees and team owners say when it comes to "racism", "sexism", "anti-semitism", and "hate".

"We believe that any comments that challenge national sovereignty and social stability are not within the scope of freedom of speech," China Central Television (CCTV) said on its social media account.

Just call it "hate speech". Then the NBA will have no choice but to ban it.

Excellent. Anyone paying attention to the President's China strategy will realize that he is doing his best to decouple the American economy from China. The Chinese government trying to police what American executives can say in America will only motivate American companies to head for the exits.

American corporations are going to be under increasing pressure to either make themselves completely politically neutral, or pick sides as global tensions heat up. They should be more concerned for what their own people think than in trying to pick up pennies from China, but they're not exactly led by business geniuses.

My first thought on the Hong Kong vandals was colour revolution. But, Peter Hitchens supports them. He's not generally pro globo homo. He was good on the Syrian false flags, he's good on the EU and he is good on Ukraine.

He is nostalgic RE our lost empire, maybe that's why he's on the wrong side in this. I can't imagine him supporting rioters anywhere else. I do value Hitchens' opinion. He is usually to be found standing up for rule of law.

Funny how you say 'no homo' and suddenly there's no freedom of association. I guess Donald Sterling is in good favor with the NBA again?

Wait, just yesterday (((Silver))) said the exact opposite. The original offending tweet was deleted and the GM who made it "changed his mind."

Blogger Jon D. October 08, 2019 2:31 PM

NBA Coach Steve Kerr whines about Trump tweets all the time. It's fine with them if they attack half of the US country. Once you see there's never real free speech standards it's easy to stop caring. But it takes people a LOT to see it.

Blogger Daniel October 08, 2019 2:34 PM

The NBA believes this, except when it doesn't:

GM Morey - "I'm sorry I support freedom."
Jokic - "I'm sorry I'm no homo."
Kyrie Irving - "I'm sorry about the flat earth."
All of NBA - "ORANGE MAN STILL BAD, SLANT-EYE."

Blogger Daniel October 08, 2019 2:35 PM

My favorite ironic response was the ever-opinionated Kerr on this issue:

Blogger Daniel October 08, 2019 2:45 PM

Bill Simmons said that Morey was almost fired yesterday. Silver can't stop stepping in it. He was so smug about the NFL when it fumbled the kneeling thing...and now he outdoes them. It helps that he's an SJW. They were made for whipsawing.

South Park skewered the Chinese in their own special way.
Today, Matt Stone and Trey Parker released a public “apology” to China’s communist leadership in their typical style. “Like the NBA, we welcome the Chinese censors into our homes and into our hearts,” they tweeted in response to an article about the episode on The Hollywood Reporter. “Xi doesn’t look just like Winnie the Pooh at all.” They provided a direct link to the episode, and promoted their upcoming 300th, before their conclusion:

“We good now China?”

Blogger Talios Hammerfist October 08, 2019 4:35 PM

I had to unfollow the r/nba subreddit due to the meltdown they are having over the 'abuse of human rights'. China is within its purview to cancel dealings with a league that clearly opposes its sovereignty. I honestly think China comes out on top here.

The Paper-Murikans and their numerous Shabbas-Goy step-n-fechits would be screeching even louder for a war against China than they already do now.

Now lets see what happens if a player criticises Israel.

How long will it be before Mr. Silver is whipped in public for using the "racially insensitive" term...."owner". Yeah, I know, it is not the same thing and the people in Hong Kong would not understand, but just shut up anyway.

Vox, is completely correct. The NBA has gone through crisis after crisis, even to the point of what the team owner's high yellow, sugarbaby girlfriend says about him, leading to him being forced to sell his ownership in the team. Tell us all about the ability of players, flunkies, and investors in the NBA to be able to speak openly and freely as they believe. I could use another belly laugh.

It's either brave, stupid, coerced, or some combination of Silver to go. It's gotta be at least 1 out of 3 he's headed for Chinese prison. My gut says more like 2 out of 3. If I were him, I'd be demanding a lot of guarantee money from the NBA for this trip. Maybe some life insurance.

Assuming you believe in the SJW concept of "Hate Speech" which Silver does, it *is* hate speech toward China. In any case, why shouldn't China be treated the same way is Israel? NBA players CAN criticize Israel, but must be very, very, careful. And there's nothing wrong with that. Right?

I've been wondering for a few years how the NBA can afford to pay the insane salaries it does when no one watches anymore. TV ratings are less than half of what they were in the 90s, the last time white people watched, and it's become a cable TV product. Yet they have so much money they have to pay mediocre players max contracts. Now I get it: they've been propped up by China. That explains some of the wokeness too: they don't feel like they need American fans. Maybe the Chinese backers even encouraged them to be more woke, to sow a bit more dissension in the US.

"The NBA will not put itself in a position of regulating what players, employees and team owners say or will not say on these issues."

Unless one of them says men shouldn't be allowed in girls' bathrooms, of course. Or if one says the races are not equal or that women shouldn't be allowed to vote or that homosexuals should be stuffed back in the closet, I'm sure.

If the Chinese don't like Blacks how in the name of Putin did the NBA become popular in China ?

That's certainly true and if the Chinese ended up owning the NBA they could ultimately raise the stakes immensely for the players: Losing team ends up being served as Long-Dong Silver's spicy-orange pork cutlets over steamed bamboo shoots. I recall there's a Chinese proverb about how they'll eat anything with legs except a table ... and I hear they're short on pork these days too. Betcha even the rumor of this would make the games considerably more exciting. The Gretard and the Swedish idiocracy would surely approve of the menu choice for it's positive environmental impact as well.
