Clueless cowards

It's reprehensibly stupid when sports reporters not only can't stick to sports, but insist on publicly demonstrating both their complete ignorance of geopolitics as well as their intellectual cowardice.
Enough already with the politics. From John D.: “We get it. You’re liberal and you hate the POTUS. Just shut up already about it.”

I will spend some words from time to time calling it the way I see it.

I am a coward for not addressing China last week. From Jeff Cannon Sr.: “You’re a coward, Peter. A quiet coward. Thank the ghosts that your industry is dying an accelerated death … Avoiding the subject of China while taking another needless shot at the president cost you a loyal reader. Good day.”

You mean you don’t want me to stick to sports?

One overriding thought about the NBA-China-United States-LeBron-Morey story: If Daryl Morey expresses his opinion wishing good luck to Hong Kong for its freedom fight from China, and if China gets incredibly ticked off about it, that is understandable. China is not as free as the United States. So of course China will be angry. So what? The Chinese run their country their way. We run our country our way. Why should anyone in the United States—particularly someone who has benefited from the freedoms of the United States like LeBron James—kowtow to China? Our belief is that our citizens can speak freely, which is what Daryl Morey was doing. China should understand this is who we are. Who cares if China is offended? If the Chinese don’t accept that we have a right to criticize them, well, tough. And if it costs the NBA billions, such is life.

I get it: It’s not my money at stake. But it’s outrageous, honestly, that China would be outraged at us. If they want to prevent their citizens from speaking freely, that’s their business. We allow our citizens to express opinions, on everything. They should understand that.
Why should the Chinese understand that? Why should anyone understand that, especially when it is observably false? Peter King would disemploy, disavow, and forcibly silence anyone in his power who expressed an opinion of which he did not approve on race, sex, or sexual abnormalities. Why should he affect outrage that China should wield its economic power as it sees fit?

If Sports Illustrated had simply stuck to sports, it might not be circling the drain now.

f. So proud to live in the same country as the late Rep. Elijah Cummings, who died last week.

What an utter tool he is.

Blogger Mr.MantraMan October 21, 2019 7:48 AM

He'd last about a day in Cummings district is my guess unless they have a special roped off area for white progs with extra security.

Well, sports and attractive women in a swimsuit issue. Or just plain sports and dump the swimsuit issue completely.

Watching that lebron fellow display his loyalties has been instructive.

Blogger Damelon Brinn October 21, 2019 8:31 AM

This China/NBA thing is beautiful. It's exposing the hypocrisy of SJWs in a way even normies can't miss. People are digging up flowery quotes from Lebron about how every person on earth should be FREE--apparently they're even in the video games now--and juxtaposing them against his statements that people should shut up about China because it's costing him money. And you can do the same with most journalists. Great stuff.

The whole Free World schtick wears thin when they are no longer self-genocidal maniacs like Mao. But at least when you keep things vague by saying "they're jealous of our freedom" as you bomb them, you can't be pinned down on exactly what freedoms you mean.

However, if you invoke Muh Freedoms in the specific context of saying "controversial" things without repercussions, you have officially become a boob. Because we live in P.C. culture, and we know what it means.

Blogger Mr.MantraMan October 21, 2019 8:39 AM

I personally would love to export "Black Wokeness" to Red China, just for the lulz, but per usual conservatives will insist on fighting everybody and in the end lose to everybody, because they are dopes.

What would the social credit score for an NBA player in China be, for the cultural icons they they join, for the street ballers who idolize the NBA ballers (travelers)?

Blogger JAG October 21, 2019 8:47 AM

I look forward to LeBron leading the Beijing team to a world championship. He should be where his loyalties lay. We'll manage without him here somehow.

China is not as free as the United States. "

America has a 'right' ( muh Free Speech, dontchaknow ) to be outraged at China.

China has NO 'right' to be outraged at the US ... presumably because they have no 1st Amendment.

this is the definition of the Narcissistic outlook.

I'm calling BS on that ``they hate us for our freedom'' canard. Our farthers and grandfathers gave up on freedom a long time ago. We had stopped even pretending to be free by October 2001.

Anyway, King George Bush the Second said it, so we know it was a lie.

They do; it's called the neighborhood Cummings lived in.

Blogger Dave Dave October 21, 2019 9:17 AM

China is freer than America because they have very clear rules, and you can do anything that isn't forbidden. Loopholes should be abused. As long as they know what not to do, they have total freedom.
America has rules, but nobody knows what they are until they break them. Everyone walks on eggshells not knowing what will get them into trouble. Self censorship is not free.

Blogger pdwalker October 21, 2019 9:41 AM

@15 in many areas, you are now freer in China than you are in the US. As long as you know what lines not to cross...

(no, I am not calling China a great bastion of individual freedom - they don't do that sort of thing)

Sports and models. Remember, their primary sell was always the "Swimsuit Edition".

"Individual freedom" is wasted on most people, and for a not insignificant portion of the population, it's downright dangerous.

Nope, free expression is only for anything that spits in the face of Christ.

Remember how the NFL fined New Orleans Saints Linebacker Demario Davis for having a "Man of God" bandanna on? If he had had an "Allah Akbar" bandanna on, he wouldn't have been fined. But conservatives would have complained about it until the Islamophobic accusation was slung.

It has always, always been about fighting against Jesus.

I've enjoyed a couple hundred hours of baseball this year, but haven't watched a single game. One word:

"STRATOMATIC"

As for the NFL, I must confess to peeping in on a few game; only flee as quickly as SJWism appeared. Matter of fact, reading from the top of the article down to the story of topic, I was pleasantly informed & entertained for a few minutes; then ...

The learned comments from the peanut gallery of the elders of the institutions for government indoctrination was entirely predictable. They are so wrapped up in their warped time & half-a-time bubble of yesteryear, they cannot even sense the rumble of revolution under their feet.

These people are stupid.

"We've added any sexist language or LGBTQ language, any denigrating language in that way, anything that is non-basketball-related," said Jerome Pickett, the NBA's executive vice president and chief security officer. "So 'your mother' comments, talking about your family, talking about test scores, anything non-basketball-related, we've added that in as well as being something that we will go and pull a fan out of the seat and investigate what happened."

So much for freedom of expression.

Although not recognized by the Olympics Girl Watching has always been a sport. Make the Swimsuit Edition Great Again.

Blogger DonReynolds October 21, 2019 1:13 PM

I can remember an era, which was most of my lifetime, when the Sports section of the newspaper was separate from the rest of the paper. It was mostly for men, but anyone could read it and it was certainly rated G. It covered every imaginable sport, every season of the year. You name it and the sports reporters had stories and stats and occasionally a rare treat....a photograph from the big race, or a winning touchdown, or home run.

I heard that many of the Sports reporters were Roman Catholic and I certainly would not be surprised if that were true. Genuinely decent people of all religions enjoy sports of all kinds. But I did not have to be Roman Catholic to read the Sports section of the newspaper. There was no expectation that the Sports section would promote one religion over another (except when it came to Notre Dame...ha ha). Yes, it was not only about men's Sports...the women's Sports were reported with real interest....amateur and professional, from golf to tennis to track to car racing.

What the Sports section did not require was that the reader agree on politics. There wasn't any. I say that and I admit that there was coverage of racial integration of Sports....blacks into white baseball teams, blacks into SEC football, black tennis players and golfers. The Sports writers covered all of that, every step of the way. Like when Cassius Clay, the black heavyweight boxer, refused to be drafted into the military in 1966....a saga that ended five years later when the Supreme Court reversed his conviction. These were political and social events and they were reported in the Sports section, but it never mattered how the readers voted or whether the Sports writers agreed with the President or who was elected President, reporting Sports was not a political act.

True enough, but the problem is that the owners of sports teams, the players on sports team, and, by turn, those who write about them or follow them, can't stick to sports. Can't do it.

Why?

Of the many benefits to have the GE be the GE -- and those benefits are legion --is that he gets people of all kinds to reveal themselves as they truly are. He unveils their character, almost as if there is a force of nature that drives them to expose themselves.

And it doesn't matter who it is -- LeBron James or Nancy Pelosi -- anyone who steps into the vortex is going to reap the whirlwind.

It is wondrous, and jaw dropping, and absolutely riveting. Entertainment of the highest order, because it enlightens.

"If they want to prevent their citizens from speaking freely, that’s their business. We allow our citizens to express opinions, on everything."

Except if the opinions you express are unauthorized ones, such as nationalism and borders for your own people, deporting immigrants, criticism of blacks, homosexuals and trannies, and support for President Trump. Then you'll get fired from your job, banned from the public sphere, and have your life ruined forever.
