No need to wonder

I think it is pretty clear the Chinese don't intend to permit the game to take place barring a full and public kowtowing from the NBA Commissioner:
Despite nearly every coach, player and staff member apologizing on behalf of Morey, China is severing financial connections with the league and discontinuing scheduled broadcasts.

Ahead of a preseason game between the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers set to take place Thursday, multiple videos have surfaced of NBA memorabilia being purged from the public view in Shanghai.

The move has many wondering if the game will be canceled.

NBA China update from Shanghai:

4:30pm NBA press conference was cancelled.

NBA fan event tonight cancelled.

Video shows how logo of Chinese Smartphone maker Vivo - an NBA advertiser - was covered on an NBA promotional sign.

Lakers-Nets scheduled to play in Shangai Thursday.
The Chinese are absolutely within their rights. They are a sovereign nation and the NBA is blatantly lying through its teeth about "free speech", which it does not respect, practice, or support in any way, shape, or form. The NBA has literally nothing to complain about in light of the way it treated a former team owner over nothing more than comments of which it did not approve.

On the plus side, we have now discovered the one force capable of forcing Mark Cuban to keep his mouth shut. And President Trump is right to observe that these bozos have no problem shooting their mouth of about him, but they're terrified to even mention an entire country, much less criticize it.
  • Item: Silver refused to apologize and said the NBA doesn’t dictate what people can or can’t say.
  • Item: Philadelphia 76ers fans kicked out of game for carrying 'Free Hong Kong' signs.
  • Item: All of the NBA's official Chinese partners have suspended ties with the league.
There is a lesson in this, people. You don't have to let SJWs push you around.

People who are ready to take a bullet in the name of American nationalism have to be very heartened by all of this. The SJWs will fold under the slightest physical pressure, which they never thought would happen to them.

Considering how much virtue signaling NBA coaches and players do on every other topic, it's remarkable that more of them hadn't spoken on this already. I'd say the word was already out not to offend their masters, but one guy slipped.

I really look forward to next summer and fall, when all the non-white NFL and NBA players will be under tremendous pressure to "use their platform" against Trump. Kneeling off-camera during the anthem won't cut it. The leagues will have no idea how to handle it.

Blogger Ransom Smith October 09, 2019 7:53 PM

Assuming China maintains their position, it's going to be interesting to see how the NBA adjusts to a major financial blow.
If I was making a wild guess, I'd say the wnba may finally get cut.
But who knows.

Blogger vmax71 October 09, 2019 7:59 PM

That’s gonna be the best part because they can’t let it be cut. The SJWs will eat them alive....so they are going to have to drop salaries and some jackass journeyman NBA player is going to disparage the WBNA for getting his salary cut and subsequently have his life ruined.

Good times

This is the problem with relying on China for growth of your product. If too much of your customer base is Chinese, you're going to have to become subservient to the Chinese government. Next, you'll have to deny Tienanmen Square ever happened.

Blogger Jim the Curmudgeon October 09, 2019 8:25 PM

I'm not Chinese, but I have a mental image of the party leadership sitting in a meeting room, angrily remarking that the NBA cares more about mentally ill men who dress up as woman than the world's oldest civilization. Vox is correct in pointing out that the league will happily censor anyone who disagrees with PC orthodoxy.

China doesn't just tolerate the NBA. Chinese companies pay billions for TV and streaming rights. They also sponsor various individual players and teams. These companies want the exposure and advertising the NBA product provides for them in China.

Silver is attempting to walk a very fine line. He says he's for free speech of NBA team employees and players, however, as Vox has made abundantly clear, he's a huge hypocrite. Is he truly willing to jeopardize their relationship with the Chinese worth billions of dollars over one tweet that has already been deleted in the name of free speech? Crazy.

Blogger James Dixon October 09, 2019 9:12 PM

> Is he truly willing to jeopardize their relationship with the Chinese worth billions of dollars over one tweet that has already been deleted in the name of free speech? Crazy.

Since I doubt current NBA fans care, probably not. But does he want the political backlash of not allowing criticism of China, but allow criticism of Trump? That could have repercussions he's not willing to face. As you said, it's a fine line.

How much revenue are we talking about? Can the NBA take the loss of Chinese money? Will they?

Blogger Dave October 09, 2019 9:15 PM

Silver can't fire Morey even if he wanted to. He could though, make his ability to perform his general manager duties very difficult. He could restrict Morey's access to arenas, other team's personnel, and players. However, Silver has already defended Morey's so-called right to free speech. Is Silver willing to be publicly humiliated by reversing himself?

Blogger James Dixon October 09, 2019 9:15 PM

As to what Silver should have said? "Due to China's attempts to regulate the speech of our employees, the game in China has been cancelled and rescheduled in Taiwan next week. All contracts with China are being re-evaluated at this time."

Millions in individual sponsorships and billions in TV and streaming rights.

It wouldn't put the NBA out of business but they have spent literally decades building a fan base in China. That is why this is a fascinating situation to watch it play out. Will Silver be able to extricate himself and the league from between a rock and a hard place?

Blogger Sargent.matrim October 09, 2019 9:27 PM

American companies see the Chinese people as nothing more than a market for expansion, but the Chinese people have more self-respect for their culture and their nations, than to be treated as such.

Or could it be, on the other hand, that they support the HKers because they are easier to represent as victims worthy of cheap Facebook emoting and hashtag activism? Or does this situation simply make their heads explode because they can't figure out how to connect either side with the depredations of Heterosexual White Men?

Halle-fucking-luja. I am still pissed at the NFL for how they handled Kaepernick. Should have bitched-slapped him down from the get-go and reminded him of his contractual obligations and not pissing off his fan base.

@41 Clay

The question depends on what is the most entertaining sport or what is the most draining on society. If it was purely from an entertainment perspective, baseball is gone, probably followed closely by golf. And that order could switch if the broadcasters don't know how to present the sport.

From the perspective of what is detrimental to society, the NBA needs to go, followed quickly by the NFL.

Vox's answer is not merely the proper business answer, it's also the morally consistent one the already well established Anti-Speech position which the NBA and this commissioner have taken multiple times. i mean, goddamn, they fined a player for saying "no homo".

William Lind's theory of 4th generation war supports China over HK. In the state vs non-state elements conflict you want the existence of every form of stability possible (the nation of China for example). This means even nations you disagree with, so killing Sadaam Hussein was a bad idea in this framework and rooting for globalists to tear China apart is also a bad idea. If China falls the continued proliferation of non-state elements is going to continue to stack up against us. Legitimacy of the state is also of vital importance. Supporting the breakup of the Chinese nation by pushing Taiwan and HK does nothing to make the USA look more legitimate, especially when the question comes on what to do about our own internal subversive elements.

Globalists need the nations torn apart to make way for their NWO. WWI saw the strongest (Christian) western nations tear each other up and paved the way for the current pozzed conflict already. To the 'China must die' crowd what, exactly, do you predict would fill the vacumn in China's absence? The beloved Iraqi democracy President Bush bragged about? I laugh.
