Nothing works anymore: construction edition

Forget bridges, highways, and high-speed trains. Major US cities can't even build simple buildings without drama anymore:
A large portion of a Hard Rock Hotel under construction in New Orleans collapsed Saturday morning, killing at least two people and injuring 20 others, authorities said. The building bordering the city's historic French Quarter is considered unstable and officials said further collapse is possible.

Three people were initially reported missing, though one has since been found, according to the New Orleans Fire Department. Authorities said no one on the ground was injured in the collapse.

According to Mayor LaToya Cantrell, 112 people were in the building at the time of collapse. Though the search for those missing was suspended for the evening, Cantrell confirmed that rescuers found two bodies but were unable to retrieve them.
VFM Bear said it best: it's the indoor plumbing that I'm going to miss the most.

Import the Third World, become the Third World. This really isn't that hard. Ain't immigration and diversity grand?
So it turns out the guy behind the collapsed Hard Rock hotel, Praveen Kailas  was previously convicted of ripping off the state, and was allegedly cutting corners by employing unqualified labor.

You can find all kinds of "building falling" compilation videos on youtube. Usually with foreign chatter in the background. Never thought I'd see a video that featured an American building collapsing just like that. Usually, our buildings have the good grace to wait until they're actually built and stressed beyond their capacity to have bits of them start to fall down. Like the Hyatt Regency skywalk in Kansas City, which was caused by a systemic lack of communication between the architects and builders, not because some shifty Tribalist decided to recruit his labor force from the parking lot of the local Home Depot.

Blogger Jamie-R October 14, 2019 5:06 AM

I recall Magic Johnson lobbying for the growing infrastructure contracts to 'minority-managed & majority minority-employee companies'. I'm sure New Orleans wasn't a part of that. They were better off with those CIA/Masonic ops where they all play a scene where the black guy gets shot dead by a cop and it's recorded on facebook and put out to all media networks promptly, that's the peak of minority contracting.

Since the death of my second wife four years ago, I have pretty much used only public transit in LaLa Land.

Yesterday morning, I took my regular bus to get to my church. It is a freeway flyer, with one jog off the freeway to a transit center. That morning, though, CalTrans had blocked off all the off-ramps which led to that jog. And apparently, CalTrans had not bothered to inform the Metro bus system of that fact. At any rate, it was a complete surprise to the driver. What was worse, though, was that she was not familiar with the area, and did not know how to replot a new way to get to the transit center.

Fortunately, though, I did, and she was willing to listen to me. So, from the middle of the bus, I called out the steps she had to take, and she followed them. Within a few minutes, she was back on track, and had arrived at the transit center, and had not lost any time. She even thanked me when I got off the bus.

But that made me realize what a cluster-hand-shake it could have been, if I had not been there, or if the driver had been stuck on stupid.

Me, I'm going to miss effective rapid transit in my city.

It is alleged that many new buildings would fail basic safety checks, especially the high rises. This is mostly due to cosy developer politician relationships. But if you check the average building site it's... significantly quieter during Call to Prayer.

Just another example of why we can't have nice things - because saving/skimming money off of projects has become the way of big corporations. Out-sourcing, diversity, and accounting are the trifecta and likely all played a part in that mess. High trust groups assume that a low bid means that the job will be done more efficiently, but the truth is the low trust groups take advantage of this mindset and short the materials and use less skilled labor.

"...it's the indoor plumbing that I'm going to miss the most"

Thanks for my first belly laugh of the day. The other was contemplating a "Mayor LaToya".

Speaking of indoor plumbing, on the low end of the market here you really have to inspect the house carefully. My daughter bought such a house.

So, Pedro from Oaxaca doesn't understand how drains are vented, and simply reroutes the washer drain a few feet to the left, and removes the vent. A cool $1K later to a real plumber, and the house now drains properly. Luckily the seller-flipper ponied up.

Later, I was helping them sort out the rest of the issues, this time with electric. Jose from Oaxaca doesn't really understand what the different colors on wires mean. Also doesn't seem to understand that you can't use the ground wire as a hot when you want to wire a 2-way.

I spent an afternoon, getting my noggin poked by exposed roofing nails, breathing insulation, while sorting out piles of wirenut spaghetti and putting things right.

Commercial property around here is different. I've been on more than a few jobsites, installing networks, where an inspector appeared, kicked the illegal immigrant workers off the site, and shut it down because no licensed electrician or journeyman was onsite, and the work was out of code. Worst one, they had to rip out half the drywall and fix it.

Blogger Mr.MantraMan October 14, 2019 9:52 AM

Chicago's white D-rats passive aggressived the blacks out of their fat sinecures for about 8 years, but now they have a black lesbian mayor so expect this, Jo-burg on Lake Michigan. At least the Hebrew mayor knew enough that you have to feed the cattle if you are going to eat the cattle, the black voodoo mayor cattle be magic an sheeeeit.

Blogger Unknownsailor October 14, 2019 10:04 AM

When code inspectors go vibrant is when things are really going to go to shit. Not that having white inspectors is a guarantee of integrity or anything, you just have better odds.

Blogger Noah B. October 14, 2019 10:59 AM

Don't count on public inspectors to catch anything, they're just another wasteful layer of bureaucracy. Inspectors have their boxes to check on some form and what they're looking for usually isn't what's really important. I've seen new commercial plumbing installations where the piping was installed at much less than minimum slope, basically flat, and the city inspectors hadn't caught it. I doubt they're doing a much better job inspecting the temporary shoring on multi-story buildings.

Inspections are a great idea but they need to be done privately and by someone with no financial relationship to the contractor.

Blogger 7916 October 14, 2019 12:37 PM

@51

Had to do the electrical wiring, sewer, and plumbing mechanicals on a cabin build myself recently, as I didn't have the 25k to pony up for all that. Toughest part was trying to do the research on the electrical code. Since it's a rental of mine, I'm gonna be the one to fix it, so I made damn sure I labeled the crap out of everything and put in access panels where I know I'm going to need to service stuff. I too hate the roofing nail in the head thing.

But that's the key; you have to care about what you build to do it right. You have to have a long term stake in the output. That's why I don't care about the plight of diversity waved in my face nor the shocking! news of the latest diversity atrocity on bridges, etc. They have no care or long term stake in America, so they neither deserve or have a right to my care. I'll save that for my family and community.

What bothers me about this, being that I am a CM by trade, is that these sort of failures don't "just happen" there are usually signs that something is wrong well in advance of the penultimate failure. One thing seems certain in my mind, no one was checking for building deflection or any sort of movement of some sort which could have alerted everyone that the building was failing.

Another question I would have, was the failure the result of habitual overloading of the deck? This is something a competent CM tries to establish BEFORE work is done, is there material or equipment that would overload the deck, if so, is that equipment absolutely necessary, if it is, are proper mitigation measures being put in place?

I've been importing steel from China into the US for almost 20 yrs. I have people who inspect & grade it before it even gets put on a ship, several times.
It's as high quality as you can get. The bigger problem is the fact that Canada buys crap steel from China, slaps a big ol' maple leaf sticker on it and sells it to America as high grade Canadian steel.
The same thing happens when Americans buy low grade Mexican steel & pass it off to American builders as high grade building materials.
Nearly everyone lies about steel quality. It should scare all of you.
That's why, despite it being my livelihood, I've strongly supported high tariffs to wee out those dishonest operators and to increase quality American steel. Id much rather sell that, as I mainly did 15-18 yrs ago, before almost all of it was killed by cheaper stuff coming from out of the country.
Tbh, S Korea has the most consistent high quality stuff coming into the US, besides our locally produced stuff.
Like I said, Americans would be appalled at what dishonest brokers haul in here & sell to dishonest operators to use in major building projects.
I feel strongly that we'll see more and more 3rd world type infrastructure and new building fails as time goes on.

Concrete is a material that can easily be produced at lower cost and lower quality. Lots of contractors are endlessly tempted to lower quality.

If that design calls for high quality (strong) concrete and you know what you are doing, you take a sample of every truck load of concrete that comes in. Then, in a couple of days, stress test it. That is about the only thing that will keep the suppliers honest.

We don't know that is what happened here, but I doubt they are rigorous when buying concrete from politically connected suppliers.

If that design calls for high quality (strong) concrete and you know what you are doing, you take a sample of every truck load of concrete that comes in. Then, in a couple of days, stress test it. That is about the only thing that will keep the suppliers honest.

One trick that sleazy contractors like to use when they have a friendly testing lab on board is to make all the test cylinders from the first concrete batch of the day. Then they back off the cement for the rest of the day's batches. There are a million ways for contractors to steal.

The website of the contractor, Citadel Builders, LLC, requires Flash to run

That alone screams "RUN, FORREST, RUN!"

The Vibrant inspector probably won't have the vaguest clue what s/he's even supposed to be looking for.

An advantage to living in northern New England is that there aren't a lot of diversity hires to really screw up construction jobs. However, I have noticed a gradual decrease in overall IQ among the guys in the trades and a general laziness, lack of attention to detail and dishonesty, negative traits that were less common even 15 years ago.
One of the largest highway construction companies in Vermont was just barred from future state bids because they cut corners on a large highway project just enough to not impact immediate safety but enough to reduce the expected lifespan of a number of highway bridges by 25 years. The current owner blamed it on the previous ownership of the company, however what the weasel won't admit is that he was the project manager, employed by the company he now owns ,and oversaw that large highway project at the time the deception took place. Total dishonesty to save money..something that is becoming more common even in a predominately high trust part of the country.

Fast forward to 2024: "Nobody wanted to disturb the party at the Grand Opening of the Hard Rock Hotel New Orleans by addressing the October 2019 tragedy when the unfinished building had partially collapsed. It was only when 30 guests of the Arcelor-Mittal steel dynasty started jumping up and down in unison to the music of Metallica in a room on the 7th floor that the past came to haunt the hotel developers as all of the guests suddenly found themselves three floors down. We have visited the two survivors in the hospital.... "

"H&D Construction Co." H&D = "Hindu and Dindu," as in Hindu ownership, Dindu labor.

@ 84 Just relocated from Northern MN to Southern MS. In MN, I just didn't talk to anyone. I'm still trying to figure it out down here. I recently got a vacation perk from Bass Pro....In New Orleans....think I won't go. It's the fishing addiction that will doom me perhaps because I'm not feeling very strategic right now.

You get around that by requiring a third party inspector who paid for by the owner and have that third part be responsible for testing. I've, in fact, never worked on a project that did not have this exact same stipulation.

I was looking at the Philadelphia City Hall, and that was built out of brick, marble and granite. Such a beautiful building will never be built again in the 20th and 21st century. The knowledge of building amazing architecture is either lost or hidden. The fact that the hard rock fell is no real surprise. Buildings worldwide has become uglier not better.

@101 That setup is best, but one problem is that the owner or CM only has control of the relationship between the contractor and testing lab on their own project. It's difficult to know if that testing lab is compromised because it frequently works directly for that contractor on other projects. Also, contractors will often approach owners and say they've got a testing lab who will do the project for a few thousand dollars less than the lab recommended by the engineer, and that's enough to convince many owners to let the contractor hire the testing lab directly. If they fall for it, huge mistake.

That is true; and modern medicine. Most people get sick at least once
