The Junior Classics, 2020 edition

The purpose of The Junior Classics is to provide, in ten volumes containing about five thousand pages, a classified collection of tales, stories, and poems, both ancient and modern, suitable for boys and girls of from six to sixteen years of age. The boy or girl who becomes familiar with the charming tales and poems in this collection will have gained a knowledge of literature and history that will be of high value in other school and home work. Here are the real elements of imaginative narration, poetry, and ethics, which should enter into the education of every child.

This collection, carefully used by parents and teachers with due reference to individual tastes and needs, will help many children enjoy good literature. It will inspire them with a love of good reading, which is the best possible result of any elementary education. The child himself should be encouraged to make his own selections from this large and varied collection, the child's enjoyment being the object in view. A real and lasting interest in literature or in scholarship is only to be developed through the individual's enjoyment of his mental occupations.

This is an essential action to help preserve the hard-worn knowledge of Western civilization. To back the campaign to revive the Junior Classics by REDACTED PRESS, please visit the crowdfunding campaign page.

All print editions will ship to the USA, Canada, Europe, and Australia. The shipping cost is included. The digital editions - EPUB and MOBI formats - are included with all of the print edition sets.

Just to reinforce the official statement that the arbitration was resolved successfully for all parties, this campaign is being hosted on indiegogo.

Definitely got to get me that leather bound set. Pricy, but worth it.

On Indiegogo...I like it

Blogger Rek. October 15, 2019 7:34 AM

Couple hundos coming your way.

Blogger Albanian Bear October 15, 2019 7:38 AM

$100 per book on the leatherbound is actually a great value. Will go perfectly with the future Castalia Deluxe selections.

Blogger Gregory the Great October 15, 2019 7:46 AM

It looks like Indiegogo has had access to consultancy services advising them on how to get rid of SJWs.

Blogger pdwalker October 15, 2019 7:52 AM

question: the pdfs are only available for the digital editions and the heirloom level, but not the case bound or leather levels?

Blogger Andy Evick October 15, 2019 8:01 AM

For a single hardcover volume, does the backer get to choose which volume to purchase or is it that already determined?

Blogger tublecane October 15, 2019 8:03 AM

I know virtually nothing about this Charles Eliot, except that he might be related to T.S. Eliot. (Brahmin roots and Harvard education in common.)

Blogger Stilicho October 15, 2019 8:03 AM

Done. Glad to see this moving forward. Another stone laid on the foundation, another tree planted for future generations.

Blogger Stacey October 15, 2019 8:26 AM

I'm in for the set! I just found out I'm going to be a grandmother, and this is my first investment in his/her future.

Blogger tdcommenter October 15, 2019 8:32 AM

Aesop was prescient. Just reading the wolf and the lamb makes me think of the Left and America.

Blogger RobertDWood October 15, 2019 8:36 AM

I realize it is early on, is there a breakdown by book of what is included for the 2020 edition?

Any hope of John C Wright Parliament of the Beasts and the Birds in the animal book?

Blogger maniacprovost October 15, 2019 8:36 AM

I thought you only owned Indiegogo metaphorically.

Well, it's a bit pricey, but a good value for the amount and quality of content. If you say to use Indienono then... I don't trust it but... backed.

Blogger VFM 4388 October 15, 2019 8:37 AM

Aesop was prescient.

Aesop was timeless.

Blogger Stilicho October 15, 2019 8:45 AM

The hardback set looks good. It has acid free paper, stitched binding and so on, right?

Blogger Manuel October 15, 2019 9:17 AM

Funded. Let's go

Blogger Revelation Means Hope October 15, 2019 9:27 AM

I love my leather bound Bible. Adds a timeless and valuable and classic look and feel.

Will seriously look at the whole set option.

Blogger Philippe October 15, 2019 9:32 AM

Wish I could support the leather edition. But backed the normal edition.

Cannot wait to have them. We are making history.

Blogger Avalanche October 15, 2019 9:33 AM

{sigh} I was HOPING for a proud banner on the books: "Castalia House Junior Classics" -- but "Redacted Press" makes more sense. I'm asking my neighbor-the-librarian (Karen, not Marian) to see if her system will buy some sets. Got no grandkids but in for a set anyway. Thank you Vox and Castalia and the Reprehensibles helping salvage some of our history. May try to contact local colleges with "Early Education" tracks... S'pose they'll all recoil in horror -- but worth a try.

Blogger Avalanche October 15, 2019 9:36 AM

AH! Important: DON'T use a credit card that charges fees for overseas purchases!!

Blogger Stilicho October 15, 2019 9:46 AM

Resolved issue. Apparently a lot of credit card companies have Indiegogo on their fraud alert system. It just took a little time for my provider to contact me so I could confirm the transaction.

Blogger Albanian Bear October 15, 2019 9:55 AM

It is fascinating timing that the day that Harold Bloom, defender of the Western Canon dies, Castalia Junior Classics is launched. May this continue the work of preservation.

Blogger tdcommenter October 15, 2019 10:01 AM

Blogger Karen took the Kids October 15, 2019 10:34 AM

Just ordered the set of hardbacks and the campaign is already up to 23/25k. Brilliant news.

Blogger JovianStorm October 15, 2019 10:35 AM

As a child, I had a full set of 1968 and 1988 World Book Encyclopedias plus the kids supplements. I read those books cover to cover a dozen times.

Were I to have children, these books would be critical for their development. If I could get shipping to Japan, it might be worth getting a set to teach from.

Blogger Starboard October 15, 2019 10:44 AM

102% funded as of 10:45 am eastern.

Blogger Gregory the Great October 15, 2019 10:45 AM

I am not superstitious, but I just took a screenshot of Indiegogo's promise:
This campaign has reached its goal and will receive all funds raised.

Blogger rumpole5 October 15, 2019 10:58 AM

In the early 1990s I purchased a 1940s set of the Junior Classics for my young son. When I looked through them I noticed that the vocabulary was more complex than the 1950s version that my parents provided us. (Nevertheless, the dumbed down one that I grew up reading was a great resource for absorbing Western civ.) Query: what version is this new one going to be?

Lastly, could I please put in a plug for the 1930s Richards Cyclopedia. The last time I checked used versions were available. This children's encyclopedia has a great section to impart all of Aesop's fables and also very readable history section's on all Western countries. Richard's got my father through all of his high school essay assignments, and, 20 years on, enabled me to look brilliant in my own high school class when I was able to answer our history teacher's "Stump the chumps" first day of class question on what the Maginot Line was. Being educated beyond one's natural intelligence has its advantages.

Blogger Mark K. October 15, 2019 11:05 AM

Will the prices be likely to change at all after the crowd funding stage? I really want the hardcovers but likely can't swing it financially until after the campaign is over.

Blogger Caffeineforge October 15, 2019 11:09 AM

Vox - can we get a mock up of what you expect the leather bound to look like?

I'd knowlove to before I make a decision.

Will the leather books have gold leaf titles?

That is, as soon as I can clear the fraudcheck.

156% funded already!

I grew up reading "The Bookhouse Books" which were a 5 volume collection of stories and biographies and tales. Complexity rose from Volume 1 to 5, from elementary school to high school level.

This is a needful thing in today's society. Would help a lot.

I believe Elias is the Greek version of Elisha?

@51 Basil (king), George (farmer), Cyril (lord) are what I can think of off the top of my head (aside from the various names out of mythology).

Down for the digital version. Can't pack a full set these days, as much as I'd like to.

tublecane, Eliot was a liberal internationalist of better stock than we see now, but still same cut of internationalist promoting likes of 'enforced Order of world peace', religious tolerance, and international arbitration as trustee of Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, etc - along with peace building CH Dodge (same line of 'Peace Society' Dodges as David Low right through to our current Koch boys), O. Solomon Strauss ($ to likes of World Brotherhood) and co.

Blogger dtungsten October 15, 2019 3:07 PM

Is there a way to order multiple copies?

Blogger Karen took the Kids October 15, 2019 3:10 PM

@35. Books are the 1918 version with some sections replaced with 1958 stories.

Christopher, Theodore, and Alexander are Greek. Dennis is the modern form of Dionysos -- Better skip that one.

If his school friends never discover them, Aristotle and Apollos make great middle names.

Phillip is a good Greek name.

That's all I can think of right now.

Blogger sammibandit October 15, 2019 3:22 PM

Thanks dudes! Basil is a good name.

I didn't know Chris, Theo, Phil were Greek. I suppose seeing them in rootword form is a big clue though!

I like Melissa for girls. Threw me for a loop when I found out that was Greek. Maybe it's related to Elisha. Andrea is another good name too.

Looks like the Junior Classics are well on the way to exceeding the first Alt★Hero campaign, as it has already passed 200% funding in less than a day.

I do note that entering "junior classics" on Indiegogo's search doesn't return the campaign. Makes me go hmmm....

Blogger D.J. October 15, 2019 4:28 PM

@51 Stephen (Crown) as well.

My son is Theodore: Gift of God.

James is the Greek form of Jacob.

Andrew (Andreas) means 'man' as opposed to woman.

Blogger Door in the Hill October 15, 2019 5:34 PM

I can confirm that even a search for '"The Junior Classics" by "Redacted Press"' will not turn up the campaign. Screenshot including the search query in the URL saved.

I'll be backing for one of the hard copy editions. Tempted by the leather if I can, but probably can't justify the price.

Blogger Jason the Gentleman October 15, 2019 6:04 PM

Is anyone else not able to sign in to post using their account in the 'Brave' browser? Let me know if there is a workaround so I don't have to open Chrome.
On subject question now - can those of us who get the hardcover set also have the digital editions included, or would that be an extra charge?

Either way, going to go in for a set of the hardcovers once my CC arrives in the mail, thanks!

Blogger Gregory the Great October 15, 2019 6:12 PM

Blogger Bialar October 15, 2019 6:39 PM

@71 Go to Brave Settings, scroll down to Social Media Blocking, and check that "Allow Google login buttons on third party sites" is enabled.

I'm not surprised to see the campaign doing so well, but I am pleased. There is a massive amount of pent-up demand for something exactly like this. Got in very early this morning for a hardcover set for our granddaughter and my wife has been doing backflips since I showed her exactly what this was. She's sure she had the 1958 set growing up. I'll probably be able to talk her into a leather bound set post-release for our own library pretty easily, especially once she sees the hardcovers.

Vox, you aren't just doing Western Civ a service, you're doing our families on a personal level one as well. Thank you.

Blogger Sargent.matrim October 15, 2019 6:44 PM

I've backed the hard cover set. We homeschool, so this will be great.

I couldn't find the link on the contributions page to add in my address? Does that come later? Never done an indigogo before?

Blogger sammibandit October 15, 2019 6:58 PM

Thanks for all the suggestions, gentlemen. Before this thread I didn't know so many male names are Greek. Ike Stephen? No idea. Same with Basil. I'm leaning towards Phillip or Leonidas. Jason is a great name as well. I don't know about your church leaders but mine always encourages us to go back to the original Greek. He's named his 3 sons with Greek names though he's Northern European and doesn't think in English. Makes me think that keeping the Greek tradition alive in our everyday lives is quite important. Glad to see the commentariate use Greek names.

Are the hardcover editions acid-free as well or are only the leather bound, deluxe editions acid-free?

I searched for "Junior Classics" on the blog and in my email to see if this question had already been answered, but all I found was info about the leather editions being definitely acid-free archival quality, in the post discussing the Castalia House deluxe subscription idea.
